I just love Emily Blunt in this movie, She stole every scene. And smart move to make the "Emily"character British!

I thought the book was good. It had a very different feel to the eventual movie. The Andy character was more "authentic" rather than, the cliched smalltown, naive Andy in the movie. In the book Andy hates the fashion world with a passion and ridicules it.She's edgier, she swears, she smokes... Miranda Priestly is a total bitch in the book and Emily is actually quite nice, although she won't admid it. The whole bookstory comes across as more, gritty and realistic. Perhaps it's because the story is really Lauren Weisbergers own story when she worked for Vogue("Runway") as Anna Wintour's("Miranda Priestly") assistant

I think the writers had to come up with a way to make the movie more accessible. If they kept to the original story and feel, the movie would have been more critical of the fashion industry and perhaps, less "glossified"and probably would marketed as a more "ïndie"movie than a mainstream blockbuster. And the studios wanted money. And you attract money by putting recognizable stuff outthere.Things you can relate to when you read a glossy magazine.

The clothes for instance; in the book names like Gucci, Prada,Chanel etc are quite prevalent. But the writer doesn't really put the fashion world in a good light. For the brands to allow their ware to be flaunted in the movie(its not like they need the advertising); the writers had to approach the fashion-subject with a bit of respect. And they did. The witty-sharp banter about extortionate prices for a shoe in the book, is replaced by an appreciation for stuff that we wear every day. You see how, decisions on fashion are made(the runthrough-scene) and it's explained how those choices affect us all, even when we think we don't really care for fashion.

The Miranda character in the movie is also very different from the one in the book. the book-Miranda is a total bitch. As a reader, you just do not sympathize with her. She is a ratty old cunt. That's lauren Weisbereger projecting her hatred for Anna Wintour. When Andy says: "Fuck you, Miranda" in the final pages, you're kinda like: "Hell yeah, you go girl!"

In the movie, it would be weird to tell Miranda to fuck off.She is not like the"book-Miranda She is not a sympathetic character but, you kind of respect her. There are very few scenes where Miranda is not on the move. indicating that working as editor in chief for a large publication is a very demanding and busy job. She therefore expects people to be as perfect as they can possibly be and she simply doesn't have the time to listen to excuses. Just fix it when things go wrong. When she frowns at Andy's GAP clothing, it's not to ridicule her, I think. It's more like when you start working for say, an international bank and you wear a t-shirt, jeans and sneakers when everybody else wears a suit. Even if you do your job well, it doesn't really show that you really care. So, why should be Mirande ba all nice-y, nice-y...I get that
She is also more "human"than the book-Miranda. The only times you see her really upset, it's because of things in her personal life. When she could'nt get from Miami to New York because of a hurricane, she scolded Andy but it was more to do with the fact that she missed her daughters'recital. The second time is when she sets Andy an impossible task("Get the unpublished manu-script of the Harry Potter book for my girls), hoping that she would fail and then maybe, fire her. reason being was that Andy not only invaded her privacy when she delivered "the Book" but also for Andy seeing Miranda pleading with her husband who was very upet with Miranda.
The third time is when Miranda is in Paris with Andy and she shows a very vulnerable side to her when she talks about the divorce. How unfair she thinks it's on her children. and almost crying(Only Meryl Streep can pull that off)

The Emily character is simply brilliant. She doesn't really feature in the book. I thought she was okay. She acted like a bitch sometimes but, the girl was just so obsessed with working at that magazine. Most of the time, the book-Emily is just another colleague with whom you can share the occasional joke and gossip. The movie Emily is fantastic. She doesn't have a lot of scenes but, she steals them all. It was smart to make her British. This indicates that the girl must have moved heaven and earth to finally work as Miranda's first assistant in New York. She's all about fashion.Obsessed even. She always comes across as VERY nervous and selfcentered in a funny way. Whenever she does help Andy, it's not out of sympathy. Its because Andy's failings might have a negative effect on her. And she always makes it very clear("I hope you understand that, I think you're completely unsuited for this job) that she is in it to safe her own neck(If she fires you, that might jeapórdize Paris for me and if that happens, So help me God, I shall track down every blimp-piece in the Tri State area to track you down...). It allso seems that she realises that Miranda hired Andy because there is just "something"about her.
Whatever it is, Emily knows that she hasn't got it. She could have accepted it from a bigger fashionista but not, from someone who eats carbs and doesn't know how to spell Gabbana.
I mean, that would piss me off as well. But, it's really the comedic timing that makes her so great. I've seen the movie three times and I have noticed that Emily Blunt never stops acting even when she is in the background with no lines. She is either running around like a lunatic and giving andy dirty looks or pulling funny faces whenever Andy speaks. or monosyllabic answers in the funniest ways

Andy:"You know my dad is coming over from Ohio this weekend?(Emily pulls a face as to say:"Aaaw, how sweet, you fucking moron")I'm gonna take him to dinner and bought tickets to go and see "Chicago"..Are you doing anything fun tonight?"
Emily gets up and gives Andy a look that could melt the flesh off your face
"Yes"
And then walks off. Fantastic timing. And it's funny to see how she likes to put up a cool, professional front but, she is a nervous wreck at best. Like in the beginning when Emily is pre-interviewing Andy and being all quick-minded, in control-businesswoman but completly loses it when someone sends her a message that Miranda is on her way to the office ten minutes earlier than expected:"" Oh mygod, No..No.Nooooo....(runs to the telephone) Yes..She's here, Tell EVRYONE!
Nigel: "Whats she doing here so early I did'nt expect her here for another fifteen minutes for the next meeting"
Emily(practically hyperventilating):"" One the beauty therapists slipped a disk or something, God! those people!"
She then starts running around the office preparing it in the way Miranda wants it and then spots Andy "You're still here..um..GO!No! Stay! She might see you when you walk out. just sit behind the desk and lets hope Miranda doesn't see you marring the area"

She got the best lines in the movie, really. It's basically her and Meryl Streep who make it great rather than mediocre...

wow....*reads* the above* Sooo....I'm a bit obsessed and have the propensity to carry on a bit. :blush

That scene is one of my faves!

got this off one of those quote sites

Miranda: Something funny?
Andy Sachs: No, no, nothing. Y'know, it's just that both those belts look exactly the same to me. Y'know, I'm still learning about all this stuff.

Miranda Priestly: This... 'stuff'? Oh... ok. I see, you think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don't know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis, it's actually cerulean. You're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar De La Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves St Laurent, wasn't it, who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of 8 different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic casual corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of stuff.

She normally wears those big glasses. All I know of her is that she is a good trendspotter. But hearing all those stories about her being a bitch...Not sure if I would ever want to meet a person like that

It's a simple fact. it's just that we don't realise it. Because we're not there during the decision making process. But it's true, that. Which was clever. Miranda still got to be a terribe bitch in the movie without making the industry look like an arse.
