Every country in Europe makes fun of it's neighbours. The dutch get to make fun of the belgians and the Germans, the belgians make fun of the french...etc.

It's all in good humour. We think that the Flemmish Belgians sound funny. The Flemmish in turn, laugh their heads off when they hear us speak.

We love to laugh at their "old-fashioned"phrases, when in reality, they speak better Dutch than the Dutch themselves. We have a lot of english that bastardizes our language, whilst the Flemmish retain the proper way.

Belgium is really nice. Cities like Ghent, Brussel and Antwerpen are really cool

I have wanted to go ever since I did a report in the 6th grade on the country. It was for my english class. Yeah that is right, ENGLISH. My teacher was a fucking nut job! She made us learn how to say hi and goodbye and how are you in literally 30 different languages and we had to do this big project where each of us were assigned a country and we had to do all this research on it, make posters, and get up in the front of the clas s to do a presentation on it. We had to dress as if we were from the country, say some words in their language and make and bring in a food from that country to share with the class

I had Belguim. My presentation sucked cause I am terrible at public speaking. I remember I made blueberry muffins for the class cause they grow a lot of blueberries there. :ha

but the flemmish language I find interesting. I want to hear someone speak it

I'll speak some when I call ya.

It's old Dutch with a very heavy french accent. The more south you go, the more difficult it becomes for Dutch people to understand it

Yeah...We don't really see it as a language. Its more of a dutch dialect. The Flemmish understand Dutch and view it as a northern accented way of flemmish. Internationally it is regarded as a seperate language.

Flemmish is a bit weird. It's more of a dialect. In northern Belgium, you'll find that it sounds just like Dutch. There is some different wording(The dutch tend to use a lot of english) but that's it. However when you go close to the Belgium/Luxembourg border, you'll find more German words in it. But that does not really qualify as a real language. It's dialect. They call it a language to set them apart from the "Walen",they speak french. And since you did a presentation on it for school, you probably know that the Flemmish and the "Walen" don't really get along.

Dutch is a language in itself. But if you would have to break it down to it's origins. One would say that Dutch is a language inbetween German and english. Which sounds quite funny. Also, the Dutch find it easy to understand Germans(eventhough, speaking it is quite difficult) but Germans find it impossible to understand Dutch! We speak way too fast and string our words together. lol

It's also very cuntfusing when it comes to the "names"of the languages.

The Germans call their country "Deutschland"and their language is "Deutsch"
They call The Netherlands "Der Niederlande"and the dutch language "Niederländisch

The Dutch call their country "Nederland"and their language is "Nederlands"
They call Germany "Duitsland" and The German language is called "Duits"

But the the english fucked it all up by calling "Nederlands"- Dutch!

When I was living in London a lot of Americans(why where they always american?) thought that Holland/the Netherlands is a place or a province in Germany. And they always asked me "Sprechen Sie Deutsch?"...NO! I don't speak German! I speak Dutch! which is something COMPLETELY different than "Deutsch"

I dont remember that at all. Either I never came across that in my studies or cause I was in 6th grade like 20 years ago. Damn that makes me feel so old saying that!

where did the name Holland come from? Why is the Netherlands sometimes called Holland?

LOL! You're not old!

Belgium has two main language zones. The north half is called Vlaanderen and they speak vlaams(Flemmish) the southern half is called Wallonie where the speak French. Belgium used to be part of the Netherlands untill about 150 years ago.

The Belgians are a unified kingdom and very proud of their country but, amongst themselves they oftimes have little tiffs about the whole language thing. a lot of Flemmish people speak french fluently but, refuse to do so. They think that, if they have to learn how to speak french, then the Walen can learn how to speak dutch. But, since dutch isn't classed as an international language; Flemmish/Dutch isn't mandatory to be taught in schools.

Brussels is in the centre of Belgium and that's where the two languages come together. People from Brussels speak french most of the time, as it is such an international city but, there is no tension between the Flemmish and Waals-contingency.

The official name of my country is The Royal Kingdom of the Netherlands(Het koninkrijk der Nederlanden) We simply call it "Nederland"(the Netherlands).

The country has a number of provinces...I thuink it's about 12...if I'm wrong than I really should brush up on my Dutch geography...lol.

Two of the most important provinces are Noord Holland and Zuid Holland(North Holland and South Holland). Back in the old days, the Dutch were trading moguls and during the 17th century they went through the "Gouden Eeuw"(Golden Century)-where they basically were the biggest trading nation in the world with colonies in South East Asia(Indonesia), South America(Surinam),the carribean(Aruba,Bonaire,Curacao,St. Eustatius,Saba), New Zealand(Nieuw Zeeland) and North America(New York state)-which they gave away to the Brits...stupid mistake.

All trading went through the big cities in North and South Holland(Amsterdam and Rotterdam), other countries were therefore more familiar with the name Holland. And it's easier to pronounce than "the Netherlands(four syllables!). When partaking in international sports' events, it says : "Holland" on an athlete's jersey.

it pisses people off from other provinces, because they feel that "Holland" is just a part of an entire nation. Especially people from Friesland. That's a province in the north of the Netherlands where people have their own language(Frysian) and culture. if they had it their way, Fryslan would be an independent nation. They evnm have their own flag and national anthem and don't regard themselves in dutch. Their language is very similar to Norwegian.

thank you for all that info rodney!

What is wrong with you euro nations? All your countries are small (well compared to Nor th America) and yet within these small countries, there seems to be at least 1 part in almost every euro country that has a different language, different culture, and would prefer to be their own country such as the providence in Netherlands you just described, the belgians are divided, the basque people in spain, hell all the eastern euro countries pretty much, and so on and so on.

how does one tiny continent not only produce so many countries with so many different languages, peoples, and cultures, but within those countries there are even more divisions?

and not only that, you have those teeny tiny countries like Lichtenstein and Luxenburg and there are a couple of others, right? They are so small they are smaller than some of the very large cities. I bet Paris and London are bigger than those countries! Hell Philadelphia probably is!

That's what you get when kingdoms are founded. If you look at European history, you can see that there were many different tribes in prehistoric times. The stronger ones had the biggest population and overpowered other tribes in the same region. The dominating force took over those tribes and unified them, making the "tribe" stronger and bigger. and it provided protection for the smaller tribes when another tribe was trying to take over their territory. Later on, these territories became the Kingdoms that we know today. But they still contained one or maybe two contingencies where they speak different languages and havetheir own culture.

the Netherlands for instance were part of Germany, then became independent for a while, then they were part of Spain and became independent again. It took centuries and many wars untill the different countries in Europe took the shape that we know now.

It is quite funny to see that an area, smaller than the US is so divided. But the US is such a youg country and founded in a very different way. Americans still have enough things in common to be viewed as one people. Other continents don't have that.

They will all be brought together under the New World Order! National identities will cease to exist! You will all be assimilated! Resistance is futile!

*Flips the bird at Jesse* :ha Never! You can take away our respective currencies but....you can never take away our frrrrrrrrrrrrrreedoooooooooom!

Europeans differ way too much. And with so many countries falling falling apart and founding new independent nations in the past 20 years, i really don't see that happening.

Europeans like the whole economic union, it makes for a very strong currency. But, as soon as there is even the slightest mention of uniting the nations in the same way that the US are united.....drama, drama, drama lol~

Do you really see the Dutch in the future belonging to the same country as Germany? Fuck no! They would rather die than having to be all mushy with the Krauts and calling them "my fellow countrymen" It's bad enough to share a continent with them as it is! :;

Pretty much what Rodney already stated. Most of us have been part of another kindgom/country at one point. Finland has been part of Sweden and Russia and thus we have a very strong Swedish community (Swedish is an official language), Russian community and also Sami people (those in the North).
