does it matter when adapting comics and cartoons to live action movies that they cast someone of a different ethnicity to the original character i ask because a lot of dragonball fans are upset that the main character is white in the film and they say the actor should be japanese, for those who don't know about the anime/manga the main character goku is actually an alien so, does it matter? |

Don't know about Dragonball, but in general I like things to be true to the original concept. I suppose it only really matters if issues about ethnicity are part of who the character is. Or how others react to them. Does that make sense? |

I'm like if it's crucial to the story. You would'nt have Anthony Hopkins play Martin Luther King eventhough he is a great actor and can probably pull it of acting wise. When it comes to Dragonball. Japanese anime characters are depicted in a certain way. And eventhough Goku is an alien, he is depicted in that same Japanese way. maybe that's why people are a bit like: Oh come on! make him look Japanese! It's a Japanese idea, get a Japanese actor. I remember that there wasa similar discussion when we heard that aaliyah was to play Akasha in QOTD. I thought it was great as I quite like aaliyah and her age and beauty suited the part really well. There were other people who said that, she was too dark and that the role should be fulfilled by a white actress. Akasha was decribed in the book as a being with skin like alabaster. Then again, historically, Egyptians in Akasha's day(6000 yrs.ago) were more Nubian(the way that Ethiopians/Eritreans look)than they were Caucasian. But it wasn't really crucial to the story. Look at Othello. Othello is a black character but always played by a white actor with brown make-up on. Or Angelina playing a black woman. But then it was her own movie and the real life character was happy for Angelina to play her. AND the woman was mixed race. Ange only needed a wig and some bronzer, she already has the bone structure of a white woman and the full lips could easily be that of someone with african ancestry I just think ethnicity becomes really important when it's crucial to the story for authenticity reasons. |

in modern takes on Othello he is always played by a black man. I know they made a movie on Othello like sometimes in the 90's and Lawrence Fishborne played him. |

Well hell they make the characters in the anime look americanized, it's not like anyone on dragonball has small slanted asian eyes. They all have big huge eyes, it's something they do with most anime! I don't care about what ethnicity the guy who plays Goku is, my gripe with the movie is that it's gonna suck donkey balls! |

I always loathed that instead of getting actual Native American actors or even Mexican actors they just got a white guy in a black wig and painted him brown. WTF is up with that? Thats in old movies though, but still, its pretty lame. I think you should stick to the actual character. Even with like, Lestat, you guys would be a bit miffed if he was played by any other ethnicity. It ruins the backround story

i have to say as a fan of dragonball that goku and the other saiyens (thats the race they are) could be from any where from japan to europe, i think its better to cast white actors because it sets them apart from the rest of the cast that it makes their differentness stand out |

Some people might see that as white supremacist(not you, obviously) especially the Japanese who came up with the story in the first place. Japanese characters and then the more powerfull God like Saiyans as Caucasian people. Pity that race will always be an issue. Personally, I could'nt give two shits. It's a bloody cartoon |

What really would make differences stand out is if the Saiyans were black. Can't get any more different than that. But, that would NEVER roll in Hollywood and I don't think the audience would like it. |

too true, but you have to say to the audience that aren't fans of the anime or manga that these are the inhabitants of this planet, they are from the other planet, easy to tell them apart |

IŽm sure the general audience wouldŽnt mind either way. The movie will go ahead and people will go and watch it anyway. Rememberthe big hoopla with Angelina playing a black woman. The movie went ahead without a hitch |
