ok I know we have had a debate on something similar or maybe identical to this, I dunno Im pretty buzzed. But! we had this convo at work and it sparked alot of comments. Do you think (if youre in a relationship) that you are together because of sameness? Like as far as race and religion and upbringing? hell, even looks. not looking the same but looking the same race/ethnicity? I have a feeling me and my guy get along swell because we were raised pretty much the same and shared the same religion. even if we dont really practice it now. Just knowing he shares similar ideas/beliefs/upbringing it seems to bring us closer together. we understand eachother or whatever by not even having to say much or anything. its weird in a way. actually its alot weird. My friend asked me if I could date outside my race or even religion and I answered "no, its just so ingrained and ever so familiar to me, I dont think I could" maybe that makes me a loser. I dunno. I find it comforting But it works for us. |

my college thesis was actually linked to this topic, I did my thesis on "attitudes towards interracial relationships" I conducted my own study that I designed myself to determine attitudes. Dating someone who is same race, religion, geographic region, political party, etc is called homogenous. Dating a person who is the opposite is called heterogamous (?) that last word may not be exactly right but it is close. I will look it up later. Many sociological studies have been done on this and it is true, all the studies conclude the same thing. In the marriage market (as sociologists call the dating game) most people tend to look for someone who is the same as them in these ways. It is usually an unconscious thing, you dont even realize you do it. But in my study, I did a questionaire that I gave out to students at my school. In a group of my questions went as follows: I approve of a relationship between an asian american and a caucasian american: strongly agree, agree, dont know, disagree, strongly disagree I disapprove of a relationship between a latino american and a caucasian american: strongly agree, agree, dont know, disagree, strongly disagree I approve of a relationship between an african american and a caucasian american: strongly agree, agree, dont know, disagree, strongly disagree I disapprove of a relationship between an asian american and a latino american: strongly agree, agree, dont know, disagree, strongly disagree I approve of a relationship between an asian american and an african american: strongly agree, agree, dont know, disagree, strongly disagree I disapprove of a relationship between a latino american and an african american: strongly agree, agree, dont know, disagree, strongly disagree I just tried to find my thesis but I cant find it so it is probably in a box at my parents house since I have so little storage here but if I remember correctly, part of my findings, the part that came directly from this set of questions, was that people most approved of interracial relationships between asian and white, and black and latino. And that is most likely because the skin colors are pretty close. people approved the least of a black and white couple, which wasnt at all surprising. Now I want to go get my thesis and tell you the rest of my results. I had like 7 hypotheses and I proved 2 of them! (which is very good for a college thesis study, hardly anyone is able to prove any hypotheses, usually because the sample sizes are too small to have any significance)anyway, for me personally we all know that I am heterogamous. For some reason, I like the difference. Particularly different race or ethnicity. But typically I end up with a religious person, or a believer as well. But that is also because there are alot more believers than non believers. To me it doesnt matter that much, unless the person is uber religious and is going to try to enforce it on me or my kids. That I cant tolerate. But it is harder to find an atheist, and my spouse or sig other can be religious or believe in god as long as they dont treat me with disrespect because of my non belief, or try to convert me, or try to really brainwash any children we might have. |

I think I like men who are a lot different because I am very curious to learn about other cultures and religions, which contributed to why I got my degree in sociology. Learning about other groups of people, always having that inate curiosity to learn about others, I think that is what draws me to men of other races, religious beliefs, customs, etc. |

Just because I'm part mexican doesn't mean jack shit, I don't subscribe to nationality. And you know I am in no way religious, I am anti-religious, but he's moderately religious. He doesn't go to church but he follows things like no meat eating on fridays during lent and stupid shit like that. And we are a year apart in age, but again that doesn't factor into anything. |

I am saying based on sociological experiments and the terms heterogamy and homogamy, when looking for a mate. These are demographic factors, not personality and likes and dislikes. It refers to dating people of similar or disimilar ethnicities, religious beliefs, age, professional sphere, etc. In other words, people tend to gravitate towards mates who are on the outside very similar to them, in appearances, religious beliefs, the kind of professions they have, etc. |
