I was watching Law & Order, yes, the Law and Order, and there was this boy who raped another boy who was four years younger than he was. The little boy was 10 and the boy starting bleeding, I know sick, but that's not the half of it. He raped three more girls and that started me wonder because I like to pretend it is up to me what will happen to these people who are being convicted and I decided I would try him as an adult. I'll be sorry but you don't go around raping kids.

He said he'd seen it on t.v. in a prison movie and all the rest of the guys showed the other guy respect when he did it.

I was wondering 1. Does tv/media influence little kids like on sex, drugs, death and such. 2. Is it okay to try them as adults when they do serious crimes such as the one stated above?

Well since you're on that side I suppose I'll play Devil's Advocate.

There is a reason they are called kids, because they are. All the media and sex and drugs on the t.v. screen these days it's a wonder they aren't more perverted. 70% of t.v. has some kid of sex in it. Stating that it's "all cool". All of that is going towards our children and affecting their minds more ways than one. Kids see these things on t.v. and thinks "it's okay, it's all right." One must look at all the sides of it.

I totally thought this topic was gonna be about you wanting to have a kid or something.

On topic - it's the shitty parents fault for not monitoring what her kid was watching, beat that bitch down.

theres a big difference between a teen (i dont care if youre 13-14-15-16-so on and so forth and that of a 10 year old as far as development on every level goes.

so who gives a shit whats on tv? parents should be more aware what thier kids are watching or who they hang out with. the t.v. and the internet are NOT 'babysitters"

I blame the kid and the parents. What a crock of shit.

I agree with Jules. Though I do believe that at some point it really does become just the teen's fault because you can't always blame the parent. To a certian point they are at fault but at the same time when you become a teen you will start forming your own opinions on what's right and wrong no matter what the parents did in your life.

My kid's not going to watch tv for the first few years of her life at lest that's my plan it's not needed at all. When she gets older she will not have a tv in her room or a computer and she will only be able to use the big desk top in the living room while we're there if she needs it for school. But when I do let her watch violent or sexual themed tv or movies it will be talked about after, I really think that type of thing can help, to see just how it effects them so you can deturmen if they should be able to watch that stuff or not.

Thats a cool idea Erin.

I also dont think its a good thing to shelter your kids too much as well.

My mum used to rent us scary movies like TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, ROSEMARYS BABY, but she always sat there and watched them with us and made sure we knew it was all just a movie and not real.

(we would ask/beg to see scary movies, she didnt just one day wake up and say lets watch PSYCHO!!!)

She also rented us classics like GONE WITH THE WIND and WIZARD OF OZ , TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and other cool stuff.

I mean, we knew right from wrong and good and bad. Parents just dont seem to make time for thier kids which is why I get pissed when asshats have kids and plop them in front of the tv or computer.

I see it all the time with friends kids and even relatives of mine. I just shake my head and keep my mouth closed

This is the failure of breeding, overbreeding in particular, and why I favor strict restrictions upon it!

I agree, Erin. Parents need to parent now a days. It's not that the world is a "big bad place" is that your kids need to know that something are better left alone. I also believe that the media/tv can be a bad influence if you do not direct it.

Agree with everyone who said about parent's responsibility.

Parent's spend way more time with their kids than the tv does, so parent's should have the higher impact on their moral development (unless something is seriously wrong!!)

Also in my experience in Probation and from listening to colleagues rapists and murderers rarely come from nothing, it is a crime that is built up to. He will have probably done other things before, like sexual assaults but less severe, or any rule breaking like stealing. These people have in common a disregard for the normal rules of society and alarm bells should have been ringing with this person way before he raped anyone.

No one has answered my question. Does media play a role?

I don't know if I agree with you, Jane. I mean I have stole before ( ah, my rebellious years) but I would not have raped somebody.

Yah I know, most people who commit big crimes start small but it doesn't mean those who do small things will always go on to bigger things.

No the media doesn't play a role, absolutely not. It's just a scapegoat so people don't have to be responsible for their own actions.

I think the media and TV might influence children BUT parents have more of an influence on children. If children are raised the right way (unless they are totally looney) they should know right from wrong.

I think it should depend on age whether they are tried as an adult. I say anyone over the age of 14 or 15 can be tried as an adult depending on the severity of the crime.

It can be partially blamed I think. In most of the cases these people were troubled to begin with but say you place a pedophile next to a kindergarten. Won't it give him even more ideas or make those sick needs even more unbearable?

Not all who see a violent movie, snap, but there are always a selected few who will. But we must understand that the reason for a snap could be anything. It could be someone looking at him strange or a generally bad day. If someone hurts himself with a knife, you do not ban all knives. Shit happens.

But kids need help when they go through negative/violent images on screen. I saw all kinds of terrible movies when I was a kid but I never watched them alone.

I to think that the media can play a role. If parents are not there and tv "parents" the kid then yes I believe that they will grow up thinking it is okay.
