Recent famous death made me think about the different values of death. If you are old and a nobody it does not really matter if you die. But as soon as you are young and your face is known from television or paper it shocks people. We mourn for people we do not even know.

Why is "young death" such a terrible thing for us? Why can't we think that maybe it was alright for him/her to go because he had done everything he was meant to do? Or are we simply afraid?

With me it's sadder when someone younger dies because I don't 100% believe there is anything after. So I think of all the things he's missed out on, all those special moments with his daughter, falling in love again, getting an Oscar for Batman (he might!). I know what you're saying, in his 28 years he may have achieved more than most people in a lifetime, I just think life is precious no matter how hard it is, and you never know what's around the corner.

Are we more sad when someone who is good looking dies? Sadly it seems yes if they are a famous person, because we don't really know them beyond their looks. I don't mourn for people I don't know, I feel sad for them and especially for their families. It can also bring memories back if you've lost someone so really you're remembering and grieving for your person but projecting it onto them maybe? Like in films when I cry if someone dies it starts out about the fictional character but it becomes more than that.

If you are old and a nobody it matters to the person's family if they die. But death is inevitable and the natural order of things, which I think makes it easier to lose a parent than a child, because it is meant to happen at some stage.

As I don't believe in coicidences, I guess I should not believe in accidents, so a person who dies unexpectantly and accidently was really meant to go anyway, at that, maybe not that manner, maybe the manner is however circumstances build themselves as. I guess there is a balance there, between pre-determination and chance. I haven't fully embraced that idea yet, but it just comes to my mind in light of Anne's question here.

But a person who dies and it old has lived a full life I guess, whereas a young person could add so much more.

Maybe when young people die it reminds us that death does not discriminate, and can come for any one at any time in all walks of life.

I believe its the choices you make that perhaps lead to your eventual death but also that when it is your 'specific" time to go, you just do.
therefore freak accidents and such.

I know that sounds like a contradiction but maybe its a mixture of both.

it think it is sadder when a young person dies because it was like they were cheated, it isnt fair that they died so young, most likely before doing a lot of things that a person who lives to old age gets to do in life. Why do some people get to live a long life and others such a short life? It isnt fair that that happens.

I know I am so terrified of dying young for this reason, that I will miss out on a lot if I die young, that I havent accumulated as many life experiences as others, that I didnt get to do all that I wanted to do.

To me it is still very sad when a celebrity who dies in old age dies because we know these people through their works as artists and they have brought joy to our lives with their talent. For instance, when Jack Nickelson dies, who is already in his 70's, it will still be sad and a great loss to the entertainment community and society as a whole, but even though it is sad it is not nearly as sad as say Heath Ledger or Aaliyah because they died way too young.

And I agree with Jesse too that when someone dies young it is also more sad and tragic because it does make me think, or remind me that shit, I can die young too which like I said before terrifies me.

And like jane, I am not sure that there is an afterlife but even if there is I would still rather be alive. In an afterlife you cant enjoy things you enjoy while living such as the taste of food, the smell of lovely fragrances, the feeling of touching someone, the feeling of passion and desire, sexual intercourse, adrenaline rushes, etc etc. So even if there is an afterlife, it cant be anywhere near as good as being alive.

maybe after we die we will look back and think how barbaric and superficial we thought the good things in life were compared to the spledor you may experience when you die.

maybe happiness evolves along with your 'spirit' or whatever. :lad
