It takes place after the events of T2, and its actually following some continuity with T3, for example, we know she's dead in T3 and in the show they time travel with a new female terminator robot sent to protect them from the year 1999 to 2007 and Sarah finds out that she died two years prior to that, from cancer. And there is lots of fighting between the female terminator and male ones, throwing each other through walls, I dig that shit.
