I will go back one day, I'm apprehensive about how it will be post Katrina. I would want to pay my respects to those people who died, somehow, in my own way.

Goodnight forum, got to sleep! :wave

So I was at the salon today, I had no appts. Usually I forget to bring a book and then I am mad cause I am bored out of my mind there. So this morning I remembered to bring The God Delusion with me when my car was being serviced. I kept it in my purse and therefore had it with me when I went to the salon.

Now pretty much everyone who works at the salon are Catholic. At least the owner and her brother who is a hair stylist there (and a homosexual) are (they are italian) and the stylist Lisa who does my hair is as well. Lisa and Tony (the older brother) are always discussing catholic politics and church stuff, Tony is also a sunday school teacher.

Anyway, so on mondays the only people who are working there are me, Tony, Kiki (the owner) and another stylist named Kim. So I go in and Tony was on his lunch break and I am sitting there reading the God Delusion for a good hour or so. I put it down for a bit and move to the receptionist desk where I am sitting to take any calls that come in. I leave the book on one of the stylist stations. Tony comes back and as he walks through the salon he immediately spots the book and immediately becomes irrate.

"Who is reading The God Delusion?" he said in a bit of an angry, aggitated tone. Kiki says "What book?" He said "The God Delusion, it is sitting over there." She says "oh that is the book Michele is reading" Then I say "yep, that is my book, a friend of mine gave it to me for xmas." He looked all pissed off and didnt say anything else, at least not to me, but I think a few minutes later in the back he was mumbling to his sister about it. I heard him talking to her but couldnt hear what he was saying and I think he was probably saying something along the lines of that it is offensive or insulting or something for me to be reading that book in here. I couldnt hear at all what he was saying, but that is what I imagine it probably was.

His sister is really cool, really chill. She didnt care that I was reading the book and it didnt bother her at all it seemed that I was reading it in there. He was the one that was about to blow his lid. I was waiting for him to say something to me, telling me that I couldnt have it in there or something at which point I would have said something about "oh are you going to discriminate against me because I do not have the same belief system as you do? Coming from a man whom I am sure has experienced discrimination and biogtry because of his sexual orientation?"

No one there knew that I am an atheist. I dont hide it, I never do. If someone asked me I would have told them point blank, but no one there has asked me, even when they have their boring ad nauseum disscussions relating to their church and their catholic rituals, which him and Lisa did last friday for a good solid hour. But I dont like to try to convince people that there isnt a god. if I am asked my opinion and invited into a debate, I freely express my opinion, but even then sometimes I dont feel it is worth it to do so, especially in a workplace environment and in a salon, not really the type of atmosphere for seriously heavy debates.

I know! It is kind of an oxymoron! I want to say to him so Tony, why do you believe in a god who thinks that you are an abomination? Even though he supposedly created you to be that way?

I am not going to get into a debate or arguement with him about it, obviously from his retardo reaction just from seeing the book he would get all emotional and angry, then he would probably try to get his sister to fire me for it. So I wont say any comments like that or debate him about it, but if he asks if I am an atheist I will say "yes" and I will say that the catholic church was what inititally drove me to not believe in the bible, jesus, and god.

I know! Another good point! I wonder if it is that they think he is heterosexual or does he go to a progressive church?
