Obama poised to claim victory By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent 17 minutes ago WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Barack Obama was on the brink of winning the Democratic presidential nomination on Tuesday, as the support of a steady parade of uncommitted delegates pushed rival Hillary Clinton to the verge of defeat. ADVERTISEMENT At least 20 superdelegates -- party officials free to back any candidate at the August nominating convention -- and 10 delegates pledged to former rival John Edwards announced their support for Obama, who would be the first black presidential nominee of a major U.S. political party. That put Obama fewer than 15 delegates from the 2,118 he needs to face Republican John McCain in November and put him within reach of clinching the honor after polls close in the final two contests in Montana and South Dakota. Those states have 31 delegates at stake. Facing defeat, Clinton told a conference call with New York members of Congress that she would be open to becoming Obama's vice presidential running mate. But her campaign said she did not plan to concede to Obama at a rally in New York later on Tuesday. "The nomination fight goes on until somebody gets the magic number and that isn't there today and that is not at all what Senator Clinton is going to talk about tonight," Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe told CNN. Voting ends in South Dakota at 7 p.m. MDT/9 p.m. EDT, and in Montana an hour later, with results expected shortly afterward. More than 150 Democratic superdelegates remain undecided, and the conclusion of the voting could ignite a stampede toward Obama. The Obama campaign has been urging superdelegates to make their endorsement before the voting ends, so the delegates he wins in the two states can allow him to clinch the Democratic race. A group of 17 uncommitted Senate Democrats met to discuss the timing of a potential endorsement of Obama. They will meet again on Wednesday but are not expected to make their announcements by Tuesday night, a Senate aide said. "I want all the primaries to play out before I make my final decision to endorse a Democratic Party presidential nominee," said Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware, one of the uncommitted senators. 'LEAVE CLINTON ALONE' "Senator Clinton needs to be left alone. Let's get through the primary process and let this week work it's course," Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid told reporters. A steady flow of superdelegates made their announcements throughout the day. Former President Jimmy Carter will endorse Obama when the polls close, the Carter Center said. U.S. Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina, third-ranking Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives and the top-ranking black member of Congress, formally announced his support for Obama and urged other superdelegates to announce their decisions so Obama could wrap things up by day's end. "Today the primary process draws to a close," Clyburn said. "told NBC's "Today" show. "I believe the time has come for all unpledged delegates to make their choices known." Obama planned a victory celebration to kick off the general election campaign against McCain after the South Dakota and Montana polls close. He will hold it at the St. Paul, Minnesota, hockey arena that will host the Republican convention in September. Clinton and her campaign have sent mixed signals over the last two days about how long she would stay in a presidential race that she began as a heavy favorite but now has little chance of winning. During the conference call on Tuesday, she was asked about running as the No. 2 to Obama. "I am open to it," she replied, according to a party aide. Her campaign backed away from that, saying she was asked if she was open to the idea of being vice president and "repeated what she has said before: she would do whatever she could to ensure that Democrats take the White House back and defeat John McCain." Campaigning in South Dakota on Monday, Clinton said the end of the voting marked "the beginning of a new phase of the campaign" in which she will seek to convince superdelegates she would be the strongest candidate against McCain in November. With no more campaign trips to plan, workers who handle Clinton's advance travel arrangements have been told to go to New York or head home until further notice, aides said. Both Obama and Clinton will speak to a pro-Israel lobbying group in Washington on Wednesday, and Obama said he expected to be talking to Clinton again soon. He said he told her in a phone conversation on Sunday that "once the dust settled I was looking forward to meeting with her at a time and place of her choosing." If I were Obama, no way would I take Hillary as my running mate. Not after all the mudslinging she did against him. Fuck you bitch! I would pick Edwards if I were him |

Did you guys see those speeches? So clever!!! Hillary allbut announced to the world that she's willing to bring her 18 million voters to stand behnd Obama but, she would very much like the vice president job in return. Loved it when she said: "I'm not going to make any decisions this evening" translation:...I'm so not conceding when I'm back in New York with all my backers standing here. I want them to remember what a fighter I am, inspire them and them make them follow me in backing Obama. Obama started off by congartulating all democratic nominees for their success during the prelims. Then devoted 5 whole minutes talking about Hillary and how devoted she is to the American people and that, he is SURE that she will continue to play an active role and make a change. translation: Hillary: "Hi Barcak. congratz. hey listen up, I want a Demorcrat in the house and I've got 18 million votes. i can give them to you. But I want vice presidency in return. I'll be of great value! Barack:"hey Hill,it would be great to have your voters backing me all the way to the White house. Why don't we hook up and I'll guarantee you an active role in Government, should I get it. It's great! The two of them could work together very well. Think about it guys, A black dude and a woman, ruling one of the most powerfull nations in the world. |

he needs to make Edwards his running mate! Fuck her!! It is not like her voters are not going to vote for him if she is not the VP. The majority of them are democrat and therefore would still vote for the democrat. Some may go to McCain or the libretarian but not that many, most will vote with Obama regardless. Edwards deserves the VP spot, not that cunt. Edwards and Obama have been more on each other's side during the early days of the primaries. They are more like minded. |

You know, I really find it grating that he is referred to as black and african american, as if his white momma doesn't mean a damn thing! He's a mutt like me! We defy racial divides because coming from mixed heritage we represent unity of the races and thus transcend the very notion of race! Barack Obama is a human! Just like us all! Hillary still has a vagina though

Not officially. It's like Rodney so excellently outlined. She is trying to manipulate her way into the vice president spot! Which just goes to show what kind of a cunt she is! 18 million voters damn well are wrong! |

exactly! Which goes to show that she does not deserve the presidency or the vice presidency and better not be picked for running mate! And I agree about the black thing Jesse. You know it is so ridiculous how in the country, someone can only be like 1/10 black but still be called a black person as opposed to white. |

She hasn't officially. But she will. She already congratulated Bareback.
Yeah, I'm mixed too. And no-it should'nt matter. But in reality it does. especvially in America. If it did'nt, the US would be a far better place and racial divide would not be an issue. But it is. And it needs to be adressed. Black people have only earbned their civil rights a few decades ago by marching and protesting.racism is still alive. Racial/social-divide..men/women...It's still an issue. In acountry that requires "change", it IS great and it DOES matter to have a woman and a black man fight it out and as pioneers make the US changetheir way of thining. Obama is the guy to do it. And with Hillary helping him out...looking good. Hillary is a stubborn cunt but, she's no idiot. Obama does not need a buddy(Edwards) to help him do the job per se. He could to with an extremely competent politician. You can't deny Hillary being just that....and a cunt. But, he doesn't have to like her.
he was one of the BEST presidents of the US! How can you say that? Mass of destruction? Do you perhaps mean Bush? As for his little escapdes(Liwinsky)...that's a private matter and a successfull smear campaign thanks to republican arse-wipe Kenneth Starr. But Bill did good. Barack will be different and make a change. Hillary can help out. |

Bill Clinton wasn't known as Slick Willy for nothing! The difference between Bush and Clinton was that Bush would be conniving right to your face while Clinton would do it behind your back. |

And she never stands up at all to bush and the neo cons in her voting like she always claims she is going to. She cowtows to them. Edwards is a better politician. Edwards deserves the VP spot more than she does. |

That is exactly what politicians here are talking about when it comes to the way americans vote. I don't live there and can only watch it from a distance without the campaigns being shoved down my throat. we don;t have rallies and costly functions and shit like that. handshakes and cutting ribbons and making tearfull speeches. We vote for the best candidate, not the nicest one We can only go by what the people CAN do. Americans tend to vote with their hearts. not with their heads. They care more about public image than actual results, it seems. Look at the way your campaigns are run! It's like a movie! but it's the way things go Bill would do shit behind your back? He fucked anothetr woman and lied about on national tv. Who fucking cares about that. So he lied! big deal! But can he do a good job? YES! and he did. Hillary is a fucking lobbyist whore? Okay. That is the public perception. Is she a stubborn cunt?Ditto. But CAN she be a competent president? YES. bitch got loads of experience that Barack doesn't have. for the greater good. people should stop clouding their judgement with rediculous emotions that, simply do NOT have a place in politics. That's how americans got a C grade student in the White House inthe first place. and THAT is America's biggest strength and biggest weakness. At the moment they need both the American Dream(Barack) and the American efficiency(Hillary) to sort out this mess your country is in. Change! |
