Hester Fuckin' Prynne!

Some people do but if public approbrium is brought to bear upon these assholes maybe it will make some people more conscious of how ignorant talking and thinking like that is. Of course, there are people who are mired in their own crapulance and will never change. I was at this other board where this same subject was being discussed and someone said "I like niggers. I think everyone should own one". Obviously he meant it as a joke but I don't find anything funny about it personally. |

Btw, this isn't a one-off for Don Imus. He's likened black people to gorillas before and said "Serena Williams has a better chance of appearing in National Geographic magazine before Playboy". Repugnant little man. It makes me sick. |

EXACTLY. The double standard is absolutely ridiculous. Some people can call other people names but others cant...without even a reason. Just BECAUSE! As for the slavery thing....GET. OVER. IT. Most blacks who talk about slavery have ancestry from Germany and Ireland and Europe in general! And if they took even a bit of time to check out their family history they'd probably find that they were not slaves at all! Not that slavery is right, but its sooo out of hand that even 1/4 blacks get up in arms about if and they dont even know what they are talking about. Latvians were slaves. Did you know that? Nope, probably not. Some of my grandmothers family members were sold into slavery to the Russians. Do you hear us fucking talking about for 5 generations? Accroding to RESEARCH (yes, it might do well for the ignorant to research their "slave history") the average Latvian slave was sold for less than a black slave. Should I go around making lawsuits? Ri-fucking-diculous. I |

I agree that those radio hosts should not have said that, it was rude and ignorant and no reason for it at all. I also think that black people should not call themselves bitches and hoes and niggers and other derogatory names. They call themselves these things but then get pissed if another race calls them it. That is bullshit! People should learn to respect people of other races and respect people of their own race and not be calling each other these disrespectful crude names period. It should never happen! People need to learn to stop hatin on others and hatin on themselves and just live their lives in harmony with others and then this type of issue would never come up! I agree with you Michele. |

Blacks have taken it and made it their own. Now it means "friend." When another person of a diffrent race says it or when someone they don't know say it it's like they are being racist. When it comes to calling someone else a slur name I agree that black peopel should shut the hell up. You hate it when people call you niggers so don't call them crackers! |

They took a word that made them feel low and made into their own. I don't agree with it, and I try not to use it, but I can undersatnd why they did it. |

I understand why as well black people took the word nigger and used it to call themselves that so that it takes away the negative conotation. But I still think it is stupid and should not have been done. |

Been thinking how best to answer this. First I think the American media were right to make a big deal out of what the guy said. It was stupid and ignorant. I white person saying something like that is different to a black person saying it. It's different because obviously a black person isn't being racist towards themself. But what he said does reflect we are not as un-racist as a society as we would hope to be. By we I include the Brits in that too, we had some sports commentor say something stupid and racist when he thought he was off the air, and he got away with it because he's older and supposedly loveable. There are still racist people, or people who just don't think! Look at our whole Big Brother incident this year. I understand why black people would take the word back and make it their own. I am a fag hag for gods sake! That is exactly the same thing, using that word (well 2 negative words really!) and trying to make it a positive thing. I am a great believer that words only have power if we let them. But certain words are associated with stupid attitudes and beliefs and that's the problem. Sometimes they are intended to cause offence and embarrassment, in this case it's as though they were used to belittle the woman. Slavery.....it's important to remember the bad things that happened in the past to try and make sure we learn from our mistakes (again as a society). I don't think it matters if my ancestors had slaves or not, I don't know! The point is the white man thought he was soooooo above the black people of the world he could treat them like second class citizens. That's not something that can ever be justified and thankfully the word has moved on since then. Unfortunatley the superiority we thought we had then is something I see reflected in Bush now. There is another point...why did the black people let this happen? Were they outnumbered? Were they tricked? I actually am ignorant to what the answer is to this so if anyone knows post about it! |

Another point on slavery....african tribes allowed or even sold other tribes to the white devils! So those bitching about reparations better start pointing the finger back to "Mother Africa"! Anyway... I am a firm believer in what Jane posted in regards to words do not have power unless you give them power. I think elements of this society are over-sensitive, and the political correctness train is doing more harm than good. How does sweeping under the rug or trying to prohibit certain words or expressions going to change how people feel and react to them? You give more power to them when you over react or try to ban them! You want to change people's thoughts, and thus their words of expression? You make light of or you hit back. You laugh at their ignorance or you fight fire with fire. Call me a nigger? I'll call you a murdering white devil! Call me a faggot? I'll call you a breeding cunt licker! And I'll laugh as I do it! I won't get angry, I won't fuel their ignorance with emotion, I will defuse by infusing with the opposite and more powerful positive energy. So I really don't care that Imus called them chicks "nappy headed ho's". I thought it was quite funny, especially coming from an ugly pasty faced devil like him. |
