As a minority I say, peeps shouldnt get special treatment. It should be based on merit alone. I know some will say "PEOPLE ARE RACIST/BIASED" bullshit, if youre good at your craft, you will gain admittance/positions. I dont want any fucking lame ass handouts that are allotted me because I am deemed "Less than" and can gain admittance because I was born minority. |

ok, I just had a convo with my lovah, who is a minority and was given a scholarship to a big university, ASU. Heres his thoughts: He reckons it evens the playing field and that peeps who are granted these special scholarships with no merit, will eventually flunk out End of Story. The others, he thinks it grants them an opportunity to further thier education. His words, not mine. I so would want him to visit this board, but forbid and hide my secret GARDEN.

Well it's kind of a non issue in New Orleans given that the majority is black. Not all white people had it good in this city either. Take the Irish for example slave owners wouldn't even let their slaves build something in the buyou I can't remember what it was maybe some cannals so they made the Irish do it and it was a very risky job. The irish were never treated with much respect in this country either. In the old days you were either French or Spanish in New Orleans and if you weren't sucks for you. |

How racism and discrimination have flourished in this country is beyond me. It's like people are saying, "Racism is okay as long as it isn't directed at me." |

Regarding gaining employment I'm along the same lines as Julesy's lovah was on education. I've given it thought and most companies offer you a probationary period where they can get rid of you if you're crap..and you can leave easily if you find the job's not for you. So maybe if the person was given a job because of ethnicity they wouldn't stay forever if they were rubbish at it. |

If we had Affirmative Action here in Australia I'd feel the exact same way as Julesy does about it I had no idea Affirmative Action even existed till Darelle made the thread |

affirmitive action has always been one topic that I dont have a firm opinion on. I see both sides of the debate and agree with both sides. Damned if you do, damned if you dont kind of a thing. How about this. Do away with affirmative action if law enforcement does away with racial profiling. That seems fair to me. |

I had no idea Affirmative Action even existed till Darelle made the thread I am glad I can help, Hunt. I am with Michele on this. Affirmative Action is no longer in Michigan, we got rid of it. But the question is does racism still pose enough problems that minorities and women can't find jobs? If it does than we need affirmative action back, but if it does not then throw it out the window and let's go on with the world. |

Affirmative Action is indeed a double edged sword, I don't like it but I can see its neccessity to certain extent. A company should have the right to employ based upon the most skilled and competent person, and shouldn't have to bypass someone who is a better asset for someone else just to fulfill some race quota. But alas, racism does exist even when you don't want it to. You have blacks screaming racism for every little thing that happens to them, that's just as wrong as racism itself, reverse racism. When I applied for DePaul University I didn't think I would get in because my ACT score was not what they were looking for, but I was urged to apply anyway, and I did, and I got in, and I know I got in because I was hispanic. It was never said or implied in any way but I just know it. Whatevah, I left after a year. |

Went to Columbia College for a couple years, then dropped out, disillusioned with the whole college process, plus I needed a full time income cause I was already leaving place to place and needed to settle on my own, which I did. |

lol College is a weird thing. My guy got a scholarship. He qualified from his GPA/ethinicity.He went as his major to be JOURNALISM. He wanted to write for a paper. I still LOL that he ended up as a UPS guy.I love him either way. He probably makes more as a driver than he could as a struggling writer.I heart him and his efforts with all my corazon. He is happy, though I reckon he would be happier writing. No wonder I fell in love.He is a writer, I am a reader! :star |

I was filling out massive amounts of papers today for my college. I'm trying to apply for the Work Study program, to bring in a little extra cash and help pay for my classes, you know. What struck me was that, although I was reminded on almost every worksheet that my college was an "equal opportunity institution" and that they could not discriminate based on anything, I was also asked for my age, race, gender and a number of other irrelevant things three or four times. Bullshit they aren't going to use that for anything. |
