It's a bit of a vague one Darrelle! I love that word affirmative, K9 says it on Doctor Who! Affirmative master! Do you mean it as in taking positive action against something? To act is better than not to act, taking control rather than just letting things happen. I need more info before I can say anything else! |

Darrelle the brits dont know what affirmative action is because they are not a racist country and therefore dont need it! Jane, after the civil rights movement, affirmative action was put into place to help people of color advance themselves, give them opportunities that they were often being denied because of the color of their skin. Such as Universities had to accept an x amount of black students each year, and employers have to hire and x amount of people of color in their workplace, even if a white person was more qualified for the job than the black canidate, the company would have to hire the black guy because of affirmative action. I have experienced affirmative action, it also goes in reverse. Like I am pretty sure that I was hired at a black non profit because I was white. I am sure in order to get their funding, they cant be a 100% black organization, they have to have at least 1 white employee working there at all times. I am not sure how prominent affirmative action still is in this country. Is is even still a policy? |

Ohh ok we do have that over here, I didn't know it was called affirmative action. it's kind of swept away and not talked about because it is such a hot issue. In all job interviews you have to fill in a form about your ethnicity but it isn't used in the selection process so they say, it's just for monitoring purposes. Officially the best person should get the job, but companies have targets to meet for employing non white people, my old company started employing a lot more men when it was like 99% female before. On one hand it seems unfair if you lose out to someone less qualified, on the other hand minority groups have suffered discrimination for so long something had to be done to make it better. |

yeah like I say to white people when they complain about affirmative action. I say do you realize how many black people who WERE more qualified for a job didnt get it because of the color of their skin? Do you know how many black people used to be turned down by universities and did not get the opportunity to get a higher education just because they were black? As a white person, have you ever gone into a restaurant and been told that you had to leave because they dont serve white people there? HELL NO! SO STOP YOUR BITCHING! I cant stand whiny white people who bitch and moan that minorities get this that and the other and that it is not fair. A lot of white people in this country are so ignorant to how much better they have always had it simply because they are white. Things that we take for granted, black and hispanic poeple are sometimes denied just because they arent white. |

Yeah. I know that's true, Michele. But minorities have gone to depend on Affirmative Action too much. It's like they don't work hard enough anymore because they know that Affirmative Action will help them out. It has been taken away in Michigan and now I am writing an article about it for my school newspaper. So, anything you guys think about it will be greatly appreciated, thanks. |

Darrelle. i took this from another messageboard I frequent. I took someones post(not mine) hope it helps. theres a link too. i noticed you guys were stuck no race as the sticking point. but you'd probably be shocked to know that the biggest recipient of affirmative action "benefits" are actually caucasian women. it actually makes sense, because, by and large, women only earn about 79% what men earn for doing the SAME JOBS. if that isn't institutional discrimination, i don't know what is. what i dont support about affirmative action programs is that companies and schools are under such pressure to "accurately" represent demographics in their workplace that they often cut corners to achieve these goals. this doesn't help any party involved. the company gets someone with lower qualifications, the deserving person gets pushed aside, and so on... Furthermore, the minorities that affirmative action purports to aid, are usually those who are more affluent and educated; in other words, it ignores those who NEED IT THE MOST. it also undermines its intent to equalize the workforce. qualified minorities who DO get hired will be accused of benefitting from affirmative action while minorities who WERE hired because of it will never acknowledge that fact. In other words, they won't practice the policy themselves for fear that they're perpetuating an injustice....which may adversely affect qualified minority candidates. suffice it to say that it's wrong to target "quotas", "percentages", and demographics. as an economics major, i can tell you that the best possible workplaces are meritocracies. i'm not naive; all hiring and promoting has alot to do with poltiics and whether the boss likes you...i just don't see how affirmative action will change attitudes in our society. That is what we need to work on first. legislation and numbers have never changed our underlying attitudes. Best way to clear up institutional racism? equalize the playing field from birth. subsidize each school district THE SAME so that poor black neighborhoods can receive the same quality education that affleunt white neighborhoods receive. that would be a start. man, i gotta get back to work...but u guys can see where i'm going with this... www.apa.org/pubinfo/affir...l#identity |

Jules, I remember that post from the Pike forum. As for me, I hate discussing these things. I'm not saying they should be swept under the rug--I just hate knowing how much more peaceful it would be if everyone in the world could just settle down about these things. Anyway.... My official stance on Affirmative Action is that it's wrong. It uses racism as a means to end it, and only seems to increase the problem at the very base: the unspoken tension. That will always be around, but will lessen with time. Affirmative Action only seems to widen the divide between the races. |

This would have been a great debate of the week topic Darelle. Maybe after the current week's topic is up we could pin this one and continue? I'll abstain from commenting on the subject until then. |
