Cell phones are so trendy these days, even with kids. Parents are buying their kids cell phones, even kids under the age of 10! Parents argue for safety reasons, but come on, is this really necessary Are children under 13, hell even teenagers responsible enough for cell phones? My opinion: NO WAY! I dont think that kids should have cell phones and for a few reasons. Number 1: I think it makes them even more spoiled and materialistic. They will come to you and say "my friend so and so got a cell phone so I want one" and parents rationalize giving in by thinking well it is for safety, so I know where they are at all times . Number 2: kids are not responsible enough to handle using a cell phone properly. They are not going to only use it for emergencies. They are going to overabuse it, calling all their friends and family all the time. They are going to text message like text messaging is a game. Kids dont realize how much text messaging costs, most of them probably think it doesnt cost anything. My client had to have her cell phone temporarily disconnected because her 14 year old son was text messaging constantly. He ran her cel phone bill up to $500! He said he didnt know that texting cost money, he thought he was saving his mom her minutes by texting instead. Kids also bring them to school, play games on the phone and such during class, throw the phones around, etc. Hell adults play with their cell phones all the time, they are addicting in a way so how can any parent expect their kid to be responsible with a cell phone? An example: Cedric has a 9 and a 16 year old daughter. He gave the 16 year old a cell phone and told her to share it with her sister. They argued over the phone and the 9 year old wanted one so he caved in and got the 9 year old a cell phone. But he got her one of those phones where she can only call him and her grandmother, just a few family members. But even though all she can call is a few family members, she still abuses the phone. While Cedric is at work at night, she calls him anywhere from 5-10 times a night on her cell phone. She is at home and if she really needed to talk to him, she could call from the house phone, but he tells me that she calls him constantly from her cell phone. One time when I was with him she called him around 11:30 on a school night, she should be in bed. She obviously thinks the phone is a toy, and since she cant call other people from it, she calls him constantly for no reason other than just to use it. I chewed him out for doing that saying that he made a huge mistake giving her a cell phone and told him he should take it away from her. he says he cant do that cause he already gave it to her and her sister has one. I told him her sister is 7 years older than her, you have to teach her that because she is younger, she cant always get the things that her older sister gets, not until she reaches that age. He said that he will take it away and not get her a new one if she breaks it or looses it. This is lazy parenting if you ask me. One time me and my friend and my sister were in the mall, this was last spring I think. We were in a clothing store and this group of 10 year old girls were in the stores. They were like 4'8 with manicured nails, designer hand bags, and cell phones. Two of them were chatting with friends on their cell phones while they were in the store. It made me sick. 10 year olds should not be acting like 16 year olds, they should be acting like 10 year olds. Number 3: Cell phones emit radiation, which can cause the growth of brain tumors. I would not give my kids cell phones and possibly expose them even earlier in life to developing brain tumors. If I had kids or someday when I do, hell no I am never buying a child a cell phone. They will not have one, period. When they turn 15 or 16, if they want a cell phone then when they get a part time job, they can then get a plan and pay for it themselves. |

Yes. Yes he is. lol I agree, it's ridiculous in the same vein as an 8 year old kid having a screen tv and every video game console in his room (can we say Dudley Dursley). My own cousin got a cellphone when she was 9 or 10 which I raised my eyebrow at, though I must admit she was more responsible with it than most. |

darrelle I mean really any age kid, could be as young as 7 or as old as 16. Though I would be more inclined to possibly give a teen a cell phone, and I definately would not give any kid under 15 a cell phone, I also am including teens cause I dont think they are responsible enough usually and would also play around with it too much and hell they just dont need one but if they want one so bad. they are old enough to get a job to pay for one, unlike a 10 year old who obviously cant do that. Therefore, 10 year olds or 8 year olds or 12 year olds should not have one period, IMO. And I also agree with you Steve, I dont believe that kids should have tvs and video game consults in their bedrooms. My sister has two kids, 8 and 5 and neither of them have a tv in their room nor will they until they are a teenager. And they also do not have an xbox or a nintendo system, no video games at all. Though they do have plenty of computer games to play with, my sister still limits the time they spend on the computer. |

no effing way. its sad and depressing to see 11 year old kids on the cell phone when they should still be learning how to interact with people face to face. |

The only reason why I don't have a cell phone is because I barely talk on the phone. |

There was never a need for me to have a cell phone when I was growing up, even though they were not available yet. I did use pay phones, but those are scarce in this city. Doesn't harm teens to have them I guess. They should be turned off during class though. Not vibrate...off. |

the teens that work with me at the restaurant CONSTANTLY play with their cell phones at work. Checking messages, text messaging, play games. They cant leave the phones alone, even when they are supposed to be working. Teachers must hate them! They probably have to confiscate them all the time in school. |

you're right Michele; teachers do hate them. they have to coviscate them all the time, but some teachers are cool and they will just tell you to put it away. I think if the circumstances call for it, then kids should have cell phones. |
