[Hoshido]
[Ryoma's Chamber]

Ryoma paused, and listened. He couldn't quite tell how much Hiko knew about the Imperial bloodline, but he couldn't ask too much without tipping his hand. He also couldn't very well force Hiko to tell him – the swordsman had come as a guest of Musashi, and he had brought a warning. If the story they had told was true, he had done a service for Hoshido as well.

So the Emperor sighed, and let it pass, instead focusing on the matter of what the stones could do in the hands of others.

“... I see, then you have some idea why protecting this stone is so important. I'm sure you're familiar with Hoshido's history with our neighbor, Nohr. They are a land of mages. In the hands of a powerful mage, a Dragonstone is most dangerous weapon... and for the last few years, a shadow has fallen over Nohr far darker than in the past.”

Ryoma shook his head. “That is precisely why I guard these secrets so. If the wrong people learned the wrong thing... I fear the reprecussions.”

Hiko's one watching eye closed again into his usual, upturned fox-like pleasant smile.

"... Particularly the potential of someone using the Dragonstones to travel through the Dragon Veins without your permission, hmmm?"

He let out a small sigh.

"It is this unfortunate history with Nohr and all of the previous conflicts with it that put Hoshido in its current precarious position. Had the hatreds been overcome over the past years of relative peace, then perhaps this would not have surfaced and the Maniwa would have had less to hold on to and use to pull the strings of both nations. It is so easy to rile up hatred these days... I sincerely hope your friend Takumi-san would be able to restrain himself if a foe attempts to ignite his passions."

The man quieted for a moment, bringing his hand up to his chin in thought, and then finally looked back at Ryoma.

"... I am curious. As I wandered, I heard very little about the Dragonstones, and yet their tales used to be a bit more common. Have you retrieved their majority and spirited them away? Or were they perhaps scattered into private collections?"

Didymus was relieved when Garnet agreed to return to the street and reunite with the rest of the group, and rushed after her as she ran into the street, doing his best to keep her in eyesight. Vivi may have disappeared quickly, and he was committed to ensuring Garnet did not do something similar.

And there, sitting outside, appeared to be Vivi. Or at least, a lookalike (and soundalike). Garnet was dashing down the street towards him, and therefore, Didymus was dashing that direction, too, trying to keep up with her and keep her closeby.

"Did you get seperated from us? It's not a terribly crowded night..." Didymus said, looking about, still asking for guidance and warning, but pacing about in a somewhat odd manner-he appeared to be circling them, but that was simply so he could look around in a full circle while still keeping Garnet and Vivi-or at least this Vivi imposter-within his vision (peripheral, if nothing else).

Richard nodded towards Owen, and regarded his son.

"Why don't you and your mother go on ahead?" he said.

Richard II paused for a moment, but realized in light of the conversation he had just had that it may be better for the moment to simply obey.

"Yes, father." he said, and took his mother's arm. As the two of them exited the hallway, Richard regarded the Paladin.

"An entire day speaking to her?" Richard asked. "It certainly is not unheard of for a member of the Order to spend a day ministering to someone, but you seem to have been doing more than that. Tell me, then, what did she tell you of, and what convinced you that her vision was indeed from on high?"

“It's... impressive,” Sage said, almost begrudgingly. “It's been a while since I've really been to one. I always tried to get out of them if I could...”

He paused, giving a wave back to the girl who waved to him, missing Joyce's expression.

“It's mostly just about making small talk and going “Mmm-hmm” at the right moments,” Sage added. “And those who really have money and power will gather in small room away from the party discuss matters of 'great importance.'”

He looked annoyed now.

Blake smiled, holding Samara's hand as he stepped inside, waving towards people and generally attempting to be happy and cheerful.

“She is. And as part of punishment she had to come with me to get you some baked treats,” Edda said to Chloe, “Using her money.”

Actually he had paid for it and no intention of making his daughter pay for them later, but he had to make it seem like he was punishing Willow for something he approved of.

“On a more serious note... there was talk of bandits having attacked a coach not too far from here last night, and that the passengers were some kids,” Edda added. “But their bodies weren't found...”

He gave Chloe a grin, one she would have seen before, when Edda wanted to bring some righteous fury on some villains. He had been trained to be a Shepard after all.

“I'm thinking we could do some tracking and maybe take care of some bandits. Might be fun,” Edda said, knowing Chloe enjoyed busting up bad guys too.

Mele glanced towards Jade, looking her over and frowning, waving his hand idly.

“Why walk when you can dance? I can carry a decent tune,” Mele said. He whistled softly, notes fluttering through the air, almost like a bird call, sounding in the still morning.

Then stone shot up around the archers, rock arms reaching and grabbing their bows, attempting to break their weapons as Mele continued to whistled, backpedaling from Jade!

Zadkiel walked with Morrid for a bit, considering things.

“My wife is a mage from here. Well, Nohr, not this village specifically. We recently came from the capitol, I was seeing to her parent's place there,” Zadkiel answered Morrid. All technically true. “And this harvest you speak of... some kind of magical plant? I confess I am not a mage myself, but I picked up enough knowledge from my wife that I know some spells call for certain plants picked at certain times.”

He went silent after that, wondering if Morrid would say anything more to fill the gap. Even a lie might point him in the right direction...

Aiden had hesitated about heading inside after Garnet, wanting to keep an eye on her father. By the time she decided to follow, Garnet and Didymus had come back out, heading over to Vivi, Aiden joining them.

“What happened?” Aiden wondered, glancing back towards the shop, having a bad feeling coming from it.

Celeste stared hard at the Dragonstone as it was produced. She had heard of them, in her studies. She had wondered, back when the idea of seeing one was a fantasy, that with that kind of power she could rid herself of the curse.

There was a temptation there, she couldn't deny it, but even if it had been left in the open with no one watching, she couldn't take it. She doubted they would let her use it at all, even if they believed that all she would want it for would be to undo her odd curse.

As they were lead to some guest chambers, Celeste sidled back to Musashi though, other thoughts in her head.

“I know they only spoke of Galdwin interfering in any war between Hoshido and Nohr, but there are the other nations. A lot of mages from Nohr go to the Elgaia Federation to study at the magic college. There's some definite influence there. And if Galdwin sided with Hoshido, I could see a chance Elgaia might give Nohr support.”

Both due to the mages, and the fact the cultures of Galdwin and Elgaia clashed. Galdwin promoted worship of a one true God, while Elgaia was steeped in myths of human heroes challenging the gods. Along with Galdwin having more centralized authority while Elgaia was a collection of city-states.

“And Aurelia... that's a wild card. Twenty years ago I would have thought they would back Nohr, but from what I've heard from other mages from Aurelia, the King there is working towards reforms. I could see Aurelia giving Hoshido aid...” Celeste added, “The elves in Hyrule would probably sit this out... I'm not sure about Ylisse, though. They might hunker down simply to protect their own borders, but I definitely don't see them trying to profit from any war, at least. A possible neutral ground...”

Aku was struck by Lancelot's spear, but not until a wave of darkness was pumped into the knight...

Aku roared, rearing back now, stumbling backwards, pretending like he was more hurt then he really was, returning to his more humanoid appearance.

“You... are stronger then you appear. Very well,” Aku said, transforming into a flying creature, soaring into the air and taking off, cackling. “You have not seen the last of Aku!”

He had poisoned one of the knights with his own brand of darkness, after all...

Gallic sat in the room he and Rin were sharing, focusing. His eyes were closed, and he sat cross legged on the floor, palms upwards. Fire burned from his hands, though it was not magic in nature, a power bestowed on him roughly two decades ago...

“The March comes soon, young one,” a voice said, calm and soothing, with Gallic's head. “Your alliance may not be enough this time.”

“We will not go quietly...” Gallic murmured softly.

“Nor should you. I granted my power to you for more than your life.”

Gallic breathed deeply, opening his eyes now as he sought out Rin.

“The March... I feel it is beginning...” Gallic said softly.

Joyce noticed Sage's discomfort but was too caught up in the grandeur of the party that she didn't comment right away. It was only when he mentioned what went on at these kinds of events that she looked back over and frowned.

“It's mostly just about making small talk and going “Mmm-hmm” at the right moments, and those who really have money and power will gather in small room away from the party discuss matters of 'great importance.'"

"Have you ever been invited to do that?" she asked, a bit quieter than before. "It sounds like something grandma would do...."

[...]

Meanwhile Samara followed Blake, hand clasped tightly in his as they made their way into the room. She noticed how happy the boy seemed to be and how he reacted to people looking at them. She wasn't even sure if she could smile at any of this...Actually she wasn't even sure she knew why Blake was.

"Are you nervous?" she asked quietly as they made their way to the center of the room by a table full of drinks. She still clutched Blake's hand tightly. "You feel worried..."

[...]

For the time Kanna let the children go off on their own and enjoy the party, but she didn't let Rica escape that easily. Instead (after grabbing a glass of wine for herself) she led them to a large door guarded by some very well dressed men. Without dropping a beat she plastered on a fake smile and approached them.

"My name is Kanna Narroh. I have an appointment"

The men were quiet for a moment but then gave a nod, motioning for the two to sit down while they waited.

[Hotel]

Chloe raised a brow at her husband but decided to let it go, especially after Edda mentioned a bandit attack. She instantly pulled herself up, pressing her messy dark hair down. She couldn't mask her initial concern until he mentioned whoever was attacked perhaps got away.

“I'm thinking we could do some tracking and maybe take care of some bandits. Might be fun,”

"While i'm inclined to agree with you, really I am, what about Willow?" Chloe mentioned, now up from the bed and rummaging through her day clothes. On her way past her daughter she grabbed one of the pastries and shoved it in her mouth. "Cuuud beeee danborussss" she said, voice now muffled by the treat.

"Not more dangerous than anything else i've done with you guys" Willow protested, now looking back to Edda "I can handle it, right?"

[Inn]

The rock creature attacked, catching both archers completely off guard, the men being knocked to the ground in a unconscious heap. From her spot Jade watched, but didn't attack. Instead she looked interested. This whole group was something special- but they were costing her a lot of men.

She readied her hands, now ready to control Mele in a similar fashion that she had done with Rue. Her pink eyes narrowed dangerously- but then she stopped. Once again she was calculating her moves. She couldn't win this- not right now. Not without reinforcements. Now she just had to convince the guy to take time away slaughtering innocent families, and torturing his foes to help her out.

"You're really going to regret not just coming with me" she said, now specifically to Graham. "And not in the usual villan is foiled kind of way. I may have just met you but I can't wait to exploit every weakness you have...." her eyes shot to Caitlin for a moment but then back to the man. She then raised her arms and it was like every piece of plantlife around her instantly was sucked of water. The water formed a hot steam, and then a fog, hiding her from sight so she could escape.

[Jackson Residence]

(BAH I forgot ALL about this)

The three loud bangs at the door were enough to make Sarai jump from her seat, the woman not even making it to the door before it was thrown open in front of her.

“Surprise! I'm he-”

Sarai suppressed at little scream, luckily catching herself once she realized it was her sister-in-law. "M-Moira!" she exclaimed "What are you doing here?"

“Sarai! Where is everybody? And why do you look so glum? Like... moreos than usual.”

The woman gave a little cough, straightening up and trying not to look so...stressed. "Connor is on an assignment and Caitlin is still traveling....Rue...."

The woman frowned, trying not to look like a total nutcase. "I sent Rue to the city yesterday....She was suposed to be back five hours ago."

[Hoshido]
[Shirasagi Castle – Ryoma's Chambers]

Ryoma gave a rather grim smile. “Ah, that is also a concern, but recent information has made that a concern even if our enemies do not have a Dragonstone. I'm sure you noticed when you arrived that the Dragon Vein is guarded.”

He shook his head. That news had been particularly unsettling. The knowledge that the Nohrian's had their own Dragon Veins, and what that implied about them as a whole... it was worrisome, but not something he could address directly.

He listened to Hiko for a moment, and he frowned. “... It is very easy to lecture on overcoming hatred and embracing peace, but it is no small task. My ancestors warred with the Nohrians over land, during the foundation of our nations. Hoshido won, and this plentiful land was ours, while the Nohrians were forced to live in a far less hospitable land. Were it not for their magic, I doubt they could have ever grown enough crops to survive.”

The history was well known, and Ryoma spoke of it sadly. “The Nohrians hated us for that, but had my ancestors not fought for this land, we would not have had a home. The Nohrians have had a hard history, but they have survived thanks to their magic – my people would not have. How can I condemn the actions of my ancestors, when they fought for survival? And how can I condemn Nohr for hating us, when they suffered because of our prosperity?”

He turned back to Hiko. “However, for many ages the Nohrians have attacked us because of their initial failure. We have warred many times, and they have cost us much in blood and prosperity. More than one of my ancestors has met their end at the hands of a Nohrian assassin, and many of my people have died and suffered because of them. It is very easy to say we should overcome the past, but say that to the children of the slain samurai and ask them to forget the blood spilled. Likewise, ask the Nohrians to forgive us for all of their knights who have died at the blades and arrows of our soldiers.”

Ryoma shook his head. “I would like nothing more than to find peace, but if even half of what my spies say is true... I fear that mine will be a legacy of war.”

When Hiko asked about the Dragonstones, Ryoma shrugged. “It is hard to say. Dragonstones were never very plentiful, but as their uses became known many sought them. And they are enormous gemstones – the sort of thing royalty crave as a status symbol. I am sure they still exist, but finding them these days is challenging.”

[Shirasagi Castle – Guest Chambers]

Musashi frowned. It was bad enough to think Galdwin could get involved in a potential war, but if Elgaia joined as well, that would erupt a war across the entire continent. Aurelia, Hyrule and Ylisse could all be dragged in one way or another... a whole world at war. It was a frightening thought that sent a chill down his spine.

“I don't like any of this.” Musashi admitted quietly. “There's no real bad blood between Hoshido and Galdwin, but not a whole lot of love either. Allies are all well and good, but if they're only helping us to go against Nohr that makes me worry what happens afterwards... and Elgaia... I've heard their mages are a bit different from Nohr, and while my people have plenty of experience fighting mages, a whole second army of mages... that's a scary thought.”

He let his mind wander a bit more. “... Aurelia... I know their old King was originally from Hoshido... I heard stories about that guy. Apparently he was banished during my grandfather's reign, because he was studying Nohrian magic... guess he did okay for himself to run off and become a King in another land. I guess his daughter is the current Queen. I know my dad met her a few times, Ryoma might have too, but I don't really pay attention to the politics...”

He sighed. “Ylisse... I don't know. I guess they're on pretty good terms with Galdwin, but I don't know if that extends to wanting to fight a war. Hyrule... no idea. Those guys are a big question mark.”

[Galdwin]
[Castle]

Owen waited for the Queen and Prince to leave, bowing his head to them as they turned away. While he was known as a hard and unfriendly man, Owen was never one to ignore proper respect. When Richard approached him, Owen nodded.

“I have seen a great many things, your highness, over my many years. I've witnessed miracles first hand, and I've seen the machinations of the true enemy...”

For a moment, Owen instinctively ran his hand along the deep scar that cut across his face. “This girl... she brims with light in a way very few do. It is no secret that among the Elders I have a reputation as... a bit paranoid.”

That was an understatement. Owen was known for being rigid, paranoid and borderline ruthless at times.

“... but this girl is something else... but I do not ask you to take my word for it. She waits down the hall. Speak to her, your majesty, and I believe you will see what I see have seen.”

Rin sat on the bed, flipping through a book absently as she watched Gallic. She knew the power he called on now, and the reason he had it. It was one of many reasons Gallic was such an interesting person... and a worthy King of Aurelia.

She listened as he made his announcement, and Rin paused. She wouldn't waste time asking if he was sure. If he said it was beginning, she believed him.

“... Then we must conclude our business in this land as quickly as possible.” Rin pointed out.

[Nohr]

[Dali]

“I-I thought I heard a chocobo...” Vivi explained, shifting a bit as he sat. “I always wanted to see one, I think... I don't know... it's weird.”

Garnet frowned, moving over and sitting beside Vivi. She didn't know what had happened to this boy in the past, but she couldn't shake the guilt that her family had something to do with it. She had to take responsibility and help him, no matter what. “It's okay. Just stay close to me, alright?”

“O-Okay.” Vivi promised.

Morrid raised an eyebrow to Zadkiel, and then laughed a little. “Well, I suppose you could call it a magical plant... but then, all of our crops are magical in Nohr. Perhaps you don't know this, but Nohr is not a fertile land. Growing anything here is a challenge. It's why so many of our people study the arcane arts – without magic, we could never grow enough food.”

He shrugged a bit. “And you are correct, some spells work better at night. So our harvest comes at odd hours compared to some places... of course, I don't travel much, so I often forget it seems odd to strangers.”

[Manor]

“Ahahahah, I know, so I said-”

Standing in a small gathering of ritzy and glitzy types was a young woman with short, dark hair and pale skin. She was clad in a deep green dress, and was halfway through some story when suddenly she froze. She felt an all-too-familiar cold feeling sweep down her spine and made the hairs on her neck stand up.

“Um... excuse me, actually...”

She pulled herself away from the boys she'd been chatting up and started looking around the room in concern. That sensation... it had been a long time since she felt it, but there was no mistaking it. She pushed her way through the crowd until her eyes fell on Blake and Samara and she groaned.

“What in the world is he doing here? Oh don't tell me... uggggggghhhh if she's here I'm gonna hurl.” The girl bit her lip. Part of her wanted to go grab the cutest, richest boy by the wrist and pull him out of here and avoid things entirely. Another part of her screamed at her to just forget everything and make a mad dash for the door (maybe stopping to steal some finger foods and a drink on her way out).

… but she couldn't run. What if Kanna was here? That certainly couldn't mean anything good; and she highly doubted Melanie would have come to some event like this, or that Blake would come on his own. This just reeked of Kanna's doing.

So with a lot of trepidation, she made her way over to Blake and... that girl.

She paused one final time. She had never seen Samara before, but... she had a horrible idea of who – and what – she was. Even so, she forced herself to walk over anyway.

“Blake? What are you doing here?” Laila asked, staring at her nephew (who was roughly her age).

Rica followed Kanna like a demented puppy, and didn't say a word to the guards. He just stood at her side, sipping wine and watching from behind his dark glasses. He didn't know where Kanna was taking him, but he would keep his mouth shut for once.

[Inn]

“She's running!” Caitlin called out, when Jade suddenly made a thick cloud of steam with which to escape. She started forward, but Graham grabbed her and held her back.

“Don't be stupid! Let her go!” Graham urged. “She's dangerous, and it's better if we just stay away from her!”

[Jackson Residence]

Moira frowned, as Sarai explained her troubles. She couldn't help but feel bad for her sister-in-law. Sarai was a good woman, but she suffered from a severe shortage of backbone. She worried about everything. Though Moira supposed part of that was being a mother... not that Moira would know, but she had raised her brother.

“Look, relax! Sarai you're overthinking things again.” Moira tried to keep it light. “I'm sure Rue is fine! She probably just got caught up in the city. You know, sights to see, exotic foods... maybe she just met a guy and decided to party a little!”

Moira is helping.

“Helping”.

[Ylisse]

Lancelot fell backwards, clutching his side. He could feel pain radiate through his entire body, and he gritted his teeth. Artoria rushed to his side, as did Merlin.

“Lancelot! Do not move.” Artoria commanded, looking down as the blood poured from his broken armor. “Wizard, do not just stand there, do something!”

Merlin frowned at the King, but he was used to her. He stepped forward and tapped his staff against Lancelot's side, and several large pink flowers spun around the tip of his staff, and then embedded themselves into Lancelot's wound.

“This will stave off the bleeding, but he needs more treatment than I can provide.” Merlin explained. “We must get back to Camelot.”

“Then hurry! Use your magic, carry him! I must find Diarmund...” Artoria frowned, looking for the Lancer who had been knocked away.

Hiko once more opened his one eye, watching the new emperor, and reminiscing about how much he reminded the swordsman of the young boy that used to be a ruler, also lost within the various politics and byplays of court life and imperial rule. Ryoma was definitely one of the imperial line, he was too much like some of the old emperors.

But the new information was something that even Hiko took note of. The Dragon Veins weren't just magical ley-lines, they were attuned specifically to the powers of dragons. A dragon could use them, anyone with a Dragonstone could potentially use them, and anyone of the dragon's blood could also utilize them. But Hiko hadn't heard anything of dragons from Nohr, and the fact that the Dragon Veins could be used by them was completely unexpected.

His voice was quiet, peaceful and somewhat wistful as he spoke. "... I am familiar with the history of the land, Ryoma-san. My words were not meant to preach, but a simple commentary. Hatred is... Not easily overcome. Only something that could threaten the livelihood of every living being in this land could unify all of them in purpose. And it is a harsh truth that many who live simple lives do not seek enlightenment or freedom from old grudges."

He paused when Ryoma told him that he wasn't sure about the Dragonstones and their location, which could only mean that the Dragonstones that he remembered Ryoma's ancestors collecting were wither too well-hidden and their location never revealed to the young emperor, or they truly have been scattered.

"... Then may I inquire as to what is it that you plan, Ryoma-san?"

Kanna sat with Rica, casually sipping her wine as she surveyed the party from her spot. "When we go in I may need you to be my muscle." she said casually, and quietly so no one would overhear. "I doubt anything would happen at a party like this, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared..."

This note begged the question of WHY Kanna would need muscle...

"Ms. Narroh"

Kanna looked up. It seemed as if one of the guards had returned.

"Madame will see you now"

Kanna nodded and stood, motioning for Rica to do the same. As she did the guard cleared his throat, moving to get between she and Rica.

"Just you. He wasn't invited."

Kanna frowned a bit. "He goes where I go. It's part of the package unfortunately"

[...]

in this form Samara had never met Laila, but the girl instantly knew who she was- as she was part of Blake. Everyone he knew she knew...But she was quickly learning that she didn't always feel the same way about them as he did. She gave a small frown, watching Blake's aunt- the child of Kanna and Rica (two people Samara REALLY didn't like) walk up.

“Blake? What are you doing here?”

"Your mother brought us here..." Samara answered for Blake, tightening her grip on his hand. "What do you want?"

[Jackson Residence]

Sarai knew that Moira was trying to help (really she was) but the older woman's comments about Rue staying in town really weren't putting her at ease...Especially the last one.

"R-Rue is too young to be spending time with boys!" Sarai managed, knowing if he were here her husband would most certainly back her up. "Anyways she would never just stay behind, she promised she would be back first thing today...She only took enough money for one night in an inn, some food and the coaches...."

Sarai sighed, plopping down in a chair. After a moment she spoke "You're right, i'm probably worrying over nothing...She's responsible. She probably is on her way...This is her first solo call you know? I doubt she'd want to mess it up..."

[Shirasagi Castle]

Ryoma paused, and thought about what Hiko said. It was true that the one thing that could bring Hoshido and Nohr together was something that would threaten them both. Such a thing had happened before – the Black March. The dreadful, legendary time when true evil beyond imagination poured out into the world.

“... With how things have come, I question if even our joint destruction would be enough to bring Nohr and Hoshido together. The rumors of what goes on in Nohr these last few years have been disturbing, and my spies have confirmed some of the more... terrible rumors.”

When asked with what he would do, Ryoma hesitated.

“That, I don't know. I have no interest in waging a war, but the news you brought is only the latest in a string of disturbing news. I fear the Nohrians plan to fight us. I do not know if we can avoid that fight, or even if we should...”

[Nohr]
[Manor]

“Believe me, your boss is going to want to meet me.” Rica spoke quietly and calmly, and he never actually looked at the guards. Instead he just smirked and let a small bit of magical energy slip from his body. It was subtle, but to those standing around him, they would feel a cold chill down their spines.

“Kanna brought me because I am an asset. Allow your boss to judge for herself.”

Laila stared at Samara, and she frowned deeply. Now that she was face to face with this girl there was no mistaking it... it was pretty clear what Samara was. Laila could feel a stirring deep inside her, and she frowned.

Then she heard the news that her mother was here, and Laila instinctively groaned. 'Just great'

“Ugh...” Laila sighed. “WHY did she bring you here? What's she up to?”

Laila frowned, and turned her attention to Blake. “Look, Blake... whatever my mom has you doing, you probably shouldn't do it. You need to be careful who you trust.”

She glanced at Samara.

[Jackson Residence]

"R-Rue is too young to be spending time with boys!"

Moira burst out into reflexive laughter. “Oh please, when I was her age I was-”

Suddenly she caught herself and flinched. Stories of her youth were probably the last thing she should tell to try to reassure Sarai. Between the knife fights, boyfriend horror stories and that time she joined a gang it would just convince Sarai of the worst possibilities of where Rue was. So Moira just rubbed her neck and adjusted her glasses.

“Err.. anyway... don't worry so much! Rue's a smart kid, and she's always been the responsible one. I'm sure she's totally fine.” Moira smiled reassuringly.

Ryoma's words weren't something that Hiko wanted to hear. If there wasn't any other plan but 'to fight', then the situation was quickly spiraling out of control of the young emperor, and his reactive stance wasn't going to fix many of the problems. It was a difficult situation to be sure, but the swordsman expected more of the man before him.

Then again, with the Maniwa Nina Corps active, it wouldn't surprise Hiko if most of Hoshido's agents in Nohr had fallen.

And yet, Hiko had a sense that wasn't all there was to this. The Maniwa as they were recorded in history didn't even follow imperial decree when under their employ and always were too willful and renegade. If they were involved, then whatever they plotted was to their benefit, not to the benefit of Nohr or Hoshido. If that was true, they had nearly unlimited avenues of action.

... There were just too many unknowns to judge the situation quickly. Perhaps that was why Ryoma was biding his time, see how the situation played out, but Hiko feared that granting time would exacerbate the tensions instead of letting them settle.

"I certainly hope that is not an answer you will keep for long, Ryoma-san..."

Didymus watched as Garnet and Vivi discussed why Vivi had ran off, and noticed the trouble that seemed to fall on Garnet's face as she spoke to him and reflected upon his actions...was that guilt? Some manner of pity? Vivi DID seem like he had no idea what was going on, and WAS found in a rather dangerous place...his own guard remained up as he looked around and attempted to request guidance and warning and sight.

Still, if Vivi had heard a chocobo...well, perhaps that mattered little. They appeared to be able to get chocobos fairly easy. But it was clear, something was NOT right with this town...

"And please, the both of you, let us all stay close with the others..." he said.

And he saw Aiden, and nodded to her.

"Alright, we appear to be all together...let us head back to the stables and meet up with your dad, Aiden..." he said, trying to keep the group unified prevent any other sudden disappearances. He really was curious and even suspicious about this town... but they had to keep their own mission in mind, too...or at the very least stick together.

Richard listened closely as Owen spoke, not sure what to make of it-to impress Owen rarely occurred, but many accounts of blessed individuals in his land were brought to his attention-some were not, and some here. Heck, he thought to himself, he had been friends with one such individual-Elder Percival-for a long while now.

That said, if this was worth his attention, on the word of ANOTHER Paladin Elder...he nodded.

"Very well, Elder. I will see this girl. But why did she seek you, and of what shall she speak?" he said, moving in the direction Owen indicated.

The Holy Land

The battle had ended, the horde exorcised or slain, and the Templars gathered around, rallying after their mop-up operations. Elder Godfrey arose from his kneeling position, looking about. The land was being prayed over, in an attempt to invoke clearing of any unholy corruption which may yet have remained.

He looked to the side, seeing his lieutenants approaching.

"Baldwin, Reynald, well met." he said.

"Well met, Elder." Baldwin replied.

"Lord be praised, we are victorious..." Reynald began. "...but this...was just the vanguard."

"Indeed." Godfrey replied. "What are our own losses?"

"1 slain, 3 wounded." Baldwin replied. "Deep wounds that may take more time and prayer to heal back to fighting strength. Would that all battles against the March would go so well."

Godfrey grinned slightly, for a brief moment.

"We don't know how the coming March will unfold." though his grin faded. "That said, yes, it will not likely be as easy as this...again, this was just the vanguard. They DID have a full-fledged...fallen one...in their ranks. But mostly rabble, probably meant to scout or secure a staging area. Gather our casualties and we shall ride back. And when we do so...we shall send out our fastest riders and messenger birds. The word must be spread; the March is about to begin in earnest. May the Lord help us all to stand 'gainst the tide."

Godfrey's lieutenants nodded, and the Templars proceeded, finishing their part of the tasks here, assigning an honor guard for the body of their departed brother and beginning the ride back...

"Elder?" Baldwin said. "Before my contingent joined battle, I saw some...observers...and may have been warned about something, or at least that something was being hidden..."

"A decisive victory. Impressive."

The man upon the stone overlooking the battle from afar snapped the tome he picked up earlier closed, sighing.

"A vanguard defeated so thoroughly. This... Honestly, I didn't expect it. Which means... Trouble."

The other voice that spoke to him, the lazy female that previously whispered in his ear and draped her power over him like some living blanket yawned, and the feeling of her power sloughed off.

"So? This just means that we need to step up our game, right? A decisive victory for them just means that the enemy needs to be that much stronger to pose a large enough threat that even the Templar would fall if they stood alone. Isn't that the point, darling? To give them a wake-up call?"

A deep and amused chuckle escaped the man in black robes as he tapped his shoulder as though something else was there, as if trying to pat a hand that only he could feel.

"Exactly. The world's on the brink, but if the light wins such decisive battles now, it's unlikely that the greater threat shall be faced in unity. We've seen what we need to see, Azie. I think it's time to tip the scales in the opposite direction. Shall we?"

His answer of "we shall" was spoken in a decidedly malicious purr from the female voice. The robed man let loose another amused chuckle as he stood up, watching as the combatants retreated from the field of conflict, closed his eyes and stepped backwards, vanishing in a flash of amalgamated colors...

GRAPPLING HOOK!

[Nohr]
[Manor]

The men at the door eyed Rica for a moment, unsure if they should go against orders and let him in. Something felt off about him...

"He's not going to stop pestering you until he gets to come" Kanna stated simply.

Another moment of silence but then one of the men sighed. "Fine, but if your head ends up on the floor don't blame us"

"Dully noted" Kanna said, motioning for Rica to follow her into the room. It was a rather large space, elegantly decorated like the rest of the estate. In the far side of the room sat a woman at a desk. Her short raven hair and sharp features made her look immediately intimidating. She looked up from her spot and Kanna spoke "Madame Rouge"

"Who is he?" the woman's accent was strong. She motioned to Rica with a pointy finger. "Surely he's not who you promised me"

"No. Rica is an...Associate." she said simply. "Joyce is outside enjoying the party. I thought we could speak first"

[...]

“Look, Blake... whatever my mom has you doing, you probably shouldn't do it. You need to be careful who you trust.”

Samara noticed the look Laila gave her and glared back. Something felt off about the girl. Off and familiar.

[Jackson Residence]

It was lucky that Moira stopped her rant as it probably would have cost Sarai the last bit of sanity she had left worrying about the wellbeing of her daughter. Instead she just gave a small gulp and looked over to the window.

"If she doesn't make it back before Connor we'll go look for her." Sarai decided. While it would be simple enough to go on her own (the family owned several horses that could make the trip) waiting for Connor made sense...Especially if something had happened...

The woman shook the bad thoughts from her mind, looking back to her sister in law. "What brings you here anyways?" she asked

[Hoshido]
[Shirasagi Castle, Ryoma's Chambers]

“Protecting this land, and my people, are my main priority. If the Maniwa have sided with Nohr as you suspect, then it is only another piece of the problem.” Ryoma shook his head.

“There are creatures that stalk the land between Hoshido and Nohr. Lumbering green-skinned giants that vaguely resemble men, but far too large. Their heads always hidden beneath some kind of stone masks. I've received more than a dozen reports in the last weeks. They are nothing natural – some Nohrian experiment, for certain.”

Ryoma frowned deeply. “There is news of strange mages, short of stature, dressed in black robes with faces hidden away by shadows that cannot be pierced even when light is shone directly on them... they do not speak, they merely lumber about and cast all manner of destructive spells. We've had far fewer reports of these things, but... enough that I believe it is more than mere hysteria.”

He walked over to his desk, thumbing through several papers. “... There are reports of various creatures and beasts, all larger and more aggressive than records would ever indicate. Some suspect they were twisted by Nohrian spells. I have other reports of bandits attacking Hoshidian travelers, but leaving Nohrian travelers alone. Bandits with a grudge against my people; or Nohrian soldiers in disguise?”

His face darkened. “... and before he stopped sending communications, one of my best spies sent a report warning us about a strange mage in service of Nohr's Royal family. We only know that his hair is blue and he is apparently called Melord; but my spy claims his magic was beyond anything we've ever seen before.”

Ryoma turned back to Hiko. “Conflict is brewing, and all of it... all of it can be traced back to Nohr.”

[Nohr]

[Dali]

“Alright. Let us go...” Garnet agreed, but she cast one last look at the shop from before. She was still curious about the magic she had sensed from the basement that did not seem to exist. It was odd, and something told her she should be wary.

Vivi stood and slowly followed, staying close to Garnet.

[Manor]

“Oh don't mind me, Madame.” Rica gave a small bow, and stayed close to Kanna. “I'm an old associate of Kanna's. I'll be no trouble to you, I assure you.”

[Jackson Residence]

Moira sighed, and she could see that nothing she could say would help Sarai with her worries. Only Rue walking in through that door safe and sound would do that. Moira just shrugged.

“I actually came to see my brother, I need to get his opinion about something... but clearly that can wait. You're just gonna worry about Rue til you see her, so go get whatever you need for a trip.”

Moira stood up, and smiled to Sarai. “We'll go find Rue and put your mind at ease. No need to wait for Connor, I can help you find her.”

[Galdwin]
[Castle]

“The one she seeks is you, majesty, but a girl from a farm village can hardly waltz into the castle unannounced and uninvited. She believed a Paladin would be her best bet of bringing the message to you; it is only by luck – or perhaps, by a guiding hand – that she found me.”

Owen led the King down one of the hallways, to a small chapel built into the castle. Inside was a young woman with long blonde hair tied in a long ponytail. She wore purple robes, and partial armor.

The young woman noticed the two and stood, and then bowed.

“Your majesty, Elder Owen...”

“Jeanne.” Owen nodded.

Rouge's eyes stayed on Rica for a second, as if trying to place where she knew him from. Finally, after a tense moment, she looked back to Kanna.

"So you believe that your granddaughter will be of use to me? How can you be so confident"

"Joyce is powerful, but she is also smart, and beautful. And with some help, she could be quite cunning, I know it."

"Cunning enough to earn back the money you owe me?" Rouge answered, brow raised. She didn't look convinced."

Kanna inwardly flinched. "Yes." she said simply. "But if you don't believe me, I may have something else that may sweeten the deal."

"..Continue"

"When I picked up my granddaughter her brother was with her."

Once again, Rouge didn't look impressed. "And?"

"-And, if that boy wanted to he could kill everyone in that party hall without even having to lift a finger"

At this Rouge finally seemed interested. She sat up in her seat a bit straighter and gave a smile. One that was very....unsettling. "Bring them in"

Kanna nodded stiffly, turning on her heal with Rica surely close behind. Once they were out of the room Kanna spoke. "Don't even say anything" she warned, knowing this looked bad. Very bad.

[Jackson Residence]

“We'll go find Rue and put your mind at ease. No need to wait for Connor, I can help you find her.”

Sarai blinked, opening her mouth to object, but unable to. Moira was right, until Rue was home safe she wouldn't stop worrying. So the woman gave a nod, quickly rushing into hers and Connor's room to grab her pack. It wasn't often that she had to travel (she never really liked it) but she had a pack in case she was needed on a trip with her husband.

A moment later she returned, looking worried, but also determined, "Are you sure this is okay? I mean I don't want to make you go on some wild goose chase for my sake"
