Mountain Pass

Zadkiel's fire erupted around him, pulling his sword out, stepping forward as the skeletons appeared...

“Oh no!” Aiden said, her own fire bursting around her now, preparing to help defend herself, Garnet, and Vivi.

Apartment

Sage sighed slightly, glancing towards Kanna again for a moment before turning back to Joyce.

“Just... promise you'll be careful, okay? And...you think Blake will be okay too? He was always nice...” Sage said.

Blake was still smiling, looking towards Samara. “Isn't it nicer to be out and about?”

Small Inn

“Both of them are very nice,” Liam said. “Their dad is a healer, a doctor. That's where Rue and Caitlyn's powers come from. Their mother is very kind, but... I think she had a hard life, my own parents wouldn't tell me much though...”

He smiled slightly, thinking back. “Her parents and mine were good friends. Well, are good friends, we still visit.”

-Hoshido-

Tokohotsu Shrine

Celeste paused as the old man appeared, some specter. She tensed, but Tamamo moved forward, attempting to do something with the spirit...

She eyed the runes carefully, frowning. Nohrian runes... of course...

-Ylisse-

Capitol

Diarmund nodded, accepting the help as they headed into the castle, taking a few deep breaths. The company of soldiers he had been with did not make it... His second-in-command had said Diarmund needed to warn the king, that he was the only one with even a chance to get out of the ambush... And even then, it had been a near thing...

“Thank you, Lucina,” he added.

Joyce looked at Sage, giving him a nod. She knew he worried about her, and she knew it wasn't without warrant (she could be quite reckless if she wanted to be).

"Of course" she confirmed with a lopsided smile "I wouldn't let anything happen to him, and I know you won't let me do anything too dumb right?"

Meanwhile Samara turned from the window of the apartment, eyes on Blake. "It's....Different." she answered, trying to find the right words. "Not a bad different though..."

Rica nodded. “Well, if anyone can find out, it's you. Let's go see what the kids are up to anyway.”

As much as he enjoyed being alone with Kanna in her bedroom, he had a feeling now wasn't the time for anything fun.

[Small Inn]

Caitlin shrugged her shoulders, her cheeks turning a bit redder.

“Well... err... no, I can't.” Caitlin admitted. “The magic is in the dagger. Graham made it for me, all you have to do is touch that rune and it does it on its own. Still pretty useful!”

She paused. “I can have him make you one, if you want. It might help you a lot...”

Graham paused. A healer? From this specific town? For a moment, his face darkened and sudden worries and doubts sprang up into his mind – but he quickly pushed those away. It wasn't possible...

“I see.” He said, shaking his head. “Well, that's great that your families have always been close.”

[Ylisse]

[Camelot Castle]

Lucina helped Diarmund make his way down the road, and to the massive gates of the castle – Camelot, the castle at the heart of Ylisse. It was an enormous fortress, simple and yet powerful. A monument to the nation.

As they drew closer, several of the castle guard spotted and came running. Lucina shouted at them to open the door, and to call a doctor. Just as they crossed the threshold of the gates, however, a voice called out.

“Sir Diarmund, Lucina – what happened?”

Rushing over to them was a short woman with blonde hair, clad in a long blue dress and wearing shining silver armor. A long blue cape hung from her back, and on her head was a circular crown. A golden sword hung from her belt, and she frowned as she approached.

Didymus had been praying and looking about, monitoring the warnings against evil he was being given. Sure enough, as they moved along, and as he suspected, something evil did indeed approach-though it seemed to travel through the walls?

"Something evil is coming." he said, calmly, as it approached, as a warning..."...though from...the walls? Stay behind me, Lady Garnet." he said, and arranged himself to stand between her and the oncoming shadow...

...then it emerged, from the wall itself?! This...was baffling, though such insidious tricks weren't exactly surprising in such a place as this.

He regarded the skeletons, his voice now loud and clear.

"Unholy minions! You have no power before the Lord!" he held out a hand, presenting a cross to them.

"In His name, BEGONE!" he cried, as the light from his sword in his other hand shone brighter...

Rue was amazed as she looked down at the blade, wanting to know just exactly how it worked. Caitlin mentioned that Graham could make her one as well and suddenly the girl had so many more questions about her sister's possible, but not quite, suitor. But that would have to wait...Instead the girl gave a nod.

"That would be amazing-" She then paused, thinking about something. "It's okay right...For someone who heals...To have a weapon like this right? Do you think dad will be upset?"

After all people who saved lives weren't supposed to take them?

[Apartment]

Kanna gave a nod and headed out of the room with Rica, her eyes coming across their grandchildren, Sage and.....Samara.

"Make yourselves at home" Kanna said looking to the group.

"This place is gorgeous grandma" Joyce said, walking back to the woman "uhhh sorry for not letting you know about Blake and Sage"

"It's fine. It all works out either way. It's been much too long since i've seen you two." she then paused, eying Sage ".....What are you're intentions with my granddaughter?"

Kanna was blunt.

Caitlin frowned when her sister asked the question. She leaned back and thought about it for a long moment, looking down at the dagger still in Rue's hands. She certainly had never used it for anything close to healing... but then she had never been as skilled at their gift as Rue.

“Dad has a sword.” Caitlin then spoke up, remembering back to when they had been very young, and she saw her father dressed in armor, carrying a sword and a bow. She barely remembered that day, but something bad had happened, and Connor had gone to protect the family. Caitlin was barely old enough to remember, and she wondered if Rue could.

“... I think, as long as you only use a weapon to protect yourself, or somebody else, then it's okay. If you go around hurting people like those bandits then that's different...”

[Apartment]

Rica said nothing, but his hidden eyes moved onto Sage. There was nothing obviously malevolent about the boy, but Kanna certainly didn't seem to trust him.

Not that Kanna was a great judge of character, as Rica well knew, but that still meant something.

[Hidden Cavern]

The Skeleton closest to them paused as Didymus ordered it back, and it shrank away from the light. It snapped its bony jaws in anger, and its glowing hands raised up defensively. The creature clearly didn't like any of them, but it had a special hatred – and perhaps fear – of Didymus.

The skeleton paused, and then it fired its magical flames – not at Didymus, but at the ceiling above him! The passageway shook and a large rock fell!

Garnet gasped – not merely because of the danger Didymus was in, but because she realized that if the Skeletons attacked like this the entire tunnel could collapse on them!

“Dad has a sword.”

Rue blinked, never recalling seeing her father with a sword. He was normally so peaceful, she couldn't even imagine him doing what they had to do just hours ago.

“... I think, as long as you only use a weapon to protect yourself, or somebody else, then it's okay. If you go around hurting people like those bandits then that's different...”

She then nodded, looking down. Something still felt very wrong about this but she knew it was a reality that she would need to defend herself in the future. "Okay....First thing when we back on the road you teach me how to protect myself. That way I can help you guys...Um Rue....Why does dad have a sword anyways? I mean I can't imagine a guy like him needing one...He's hardly in danger working the clinic"

Hiko had very little time to actually warn anyone of the dangers still present. He knew that actually defeating the Onryoki was the difficult part, but the most dangerous part of this whole adventure was yet to come, simply because this was the moment that everyone let down their guard. He only barely saw what Tamamo was up to, having only just now made it slowly back up the main steps of the shrine proper to see the grounds, and went to call a warning...

But it was too late. Tamamo reached with her magic for the gem within the corpse's chest.

For Tamamo, there was only a split-second of time to act at all. As she reached, she could suddenly FEEL the presence of something hidden, nasty, malicious, VENOMOUS within the corpse, and not even an eyeblink worth of moment after she noticed passed, an enormous semi-transparent black-red adder snapped out of the gem as if materializing from some trap, springing from a coiled strike and aiming right for the fox girl's throat. There was barely enough time to act, barely enough time to comprehend that yes, she was about to be bitten...

A slight glance upward and a sensation, whether from his own awareness or otherwise, that he had to dodge NOW led Didymus to jump backwards, briefly, narrowly dodging the rock that fell from the cavern roof. The concept that the entire place could come down around them with attacks like that didn't necessarily occur to him then-his mind was focused elsewhere. Namely on winning this fight and moving on as quickly as possible, especially if enemies would literally be coming out of the walls.

"In His name, then..." he said, before running at the nearest skeleton, sword still shining with light, and swung his sword at it!

Sage smiled at Joyce, nodding to her before Kanna asked him his intentions.

There was a trace of a blush on his face, but he turned towards her. “Joyce is my best friend, I'm here to help her. We've known each other since we were like six.”

Blake smiled at Samara, glad she seemed to be enjoying herself. “If you wanna stay out more often, you can! I have plenty of power for you to do so... and it feels... better, when you're out.”

Manifesting Samara drew down the amount of power that built up in his body after all.

Small Inn

Liam smiled, nodding. “It is. Caitlin and Rue are old friends. I always brought back something when my family traveled for Rue... Caitlin said she never cared, though I'm sure Rue probably doesn't have much of that stuff, they were just baubles.”

Or maybe keeps them in a box under her bed.

Hidden Cavern

Zadkiel's armor glowed, moving forward and grabbing the large rock, hoisting it upwards with a grunt of effort, some kind of force acting on it to increase his strength.

Aiden shook, then narrowed her eyes at another skeleton, focusing her own holy flames at another skeleton, throwing a ball of fire forwards!

“My King,” Diarmund said, bending down to one knee as Arturia appeared.

“My force was attacked by some strange creatures of darkness. They... killed everyone but me. My second in command told me I had to return, that... I was the only one with a chance to fight my way out and warn you...” Diarmund said, his voice shakey, clearly torn up at leaving his men behind.

Tamamo could feel something was wrong – something terrible and virulent was hidden within that gem. As the translucent adder shot out and aimed for her throat she gasped and moved back, throwing up her hand to try to push it away with her onafuda – but she wasn't quite quick enough. The strip of spiritual paper exploded out with sharp chunks of ice, but would it be enough to keep the snake from striking her?

[Nohr]

[Hidden Passageway]

Aiden's flames spouted out and engulfed at the skeleton, but it moved its wicked hands and crafted a small, translucent shield that tried to keep them back. The holy flames seemed to burn at its shield, quickly weakening it and causing large cracks to appear – but before they could break it completely Didymus had arrived and swung his sword – and the skeleton was too preoccupied trying to keep the flames from engulfing it to dodge – his sword struck out, slamming into its bones and there was a bright flash of light the moment steel touched bone – and the skeleton let out a terrible howl as its bones fell apart and clattered against the floor!

However, just as that skeleton was reduced to a pile of bones, two more slipped through the wall, howling out terribly as they did so.

Posted Image

These ghostly skeletons were different from the first – they were only an upper body floating in the air, with translucent veils falling off their hands. Their hands let out clouds of black smoke and they could not speak – but they howled out a wicked sound!

“Oh no!” Garnet gasped at the sight. “I have seen such a creature before – do not let them touch you! A single touch will cause your flesh to rot!”

[Small Inn]

Caitlin nodded with a smile. “Sure. First thing in the morning I'll start giving you lessons. Nothing too crazy, just the basics.”

She didn't like the idea of her sister learning how to fight, but after what they had experienced, it was necessary. Besides, she had a terrible feeling that one day Rue would run off to see the world (probably with Liam, Caitlin groaned as she thought) and she would need to know how to defend herself.

She paused, as the question came up again, and she shrugged. “I don't know... dad never struck me as a warrior or something... but I know he has a sword! I saw it...”

“You might be surprised.” Graham shrugged his shoulders as he leaned back on his bed. “... Even just a bauble can become the most valuable thing you own, when the person who gave it to you matters a great deal.”

He gave a small, but sad smile.

[Ylisse]

Arturia frowned deeply, her eyes narrowing. This sounded serious – gravely so. She nodded slightly, stepping forward and placing her hand on Diarmund's shoulder.

“You did well to bring warning. We will mourn for the lost, but not now. We must identify the creatures that attacked you, and stop them from hurting anyone else.” She tried to be comforting, but it was something she never felt like she did well.

“Lucina,” She looked to her sister. “Send word to gather the Knights of the Round. And find that useless excuse for a wizard, we shall need his expertise to know what we're up against.”

Lucina nodded, bowing quickly, and then she turned and rushed off to do as she was told.

Arturia looked to Diarmund. “... You're hurt. Come and sit, we will get those wounds treated.”

“Sure. First thing in the morning I'll start giving you lessons. Nothing too crazy, just the basics.”

After a moment Rue moved forward, hugging Caitlin tightly. Now that they were older the to girls didn't see each other quite as often, but Rue still adored her older sister- even if she drove her crazy sometimes. "I appreciate it, really." she mumbled, moving back and heading to her bed and staring up at the ceiling.

[???]

A teenage girl rode along the back of a coach, not by choice but rather because a heavy chain attached to her leg held her there. By now the police knew how to deal with her- after all this was the fourth time this year she had been caught fighting men twice her size.

Willow knew her mom and dad were not going to be happy....Actually her mom would probably snicker at least a few times, she always got a kick out of hearing how her delicate flower made some guy's nose bleed- and not in the way women usually did.

[Apartment]

Kanna continued to stare at Sage, not looking impressed even with he and Joyce's history. "You look like someone...Though I can't recall who" she noticed. Being the kind of woman she was (rich, successful and morally ambiguous at best) the woman had probably actually met Sage's father several times. "Where is your family from?"

[...]

“If you wanna stay out more often, you can! I have plenty of power for you to do so... and it feels... better, when you're out.”

Meanwhile Samara gave the tiniest of smiles, her eyes down. "It's....Different. I'm not sure if that's good or bad. It feels strange to be out, like I have to be more aware in order to keep you safe...But it's not as dark here, I like it."

Caitlin could only smile slightly as her sister hugged her. She had never been especially affectionate, but Rue meant the world to her. She quietly hugged her back and then moved away, smiling as Rue made her way to her bed.

“You know... it's good to see you again, Rue. I did miss you. Maybe the four of us should travel some more, after we stop in at home.”

A strange feeling would flow around Tamano suddenly, Celeste focusing, hands up as she attempted to use her most powerful arts.

The odds would shift in the kitsune's favor, small changes making it more likely for her to succeed and avoid the strike, as Celeste felt her power drain from the effort...

Zadkiel shifted, the rock he was holding sliding backwards and hitting the ground, stepping forward as he pulled his sword, fire burning around the blade.

“Burn!” Zadkiel declared, a searing beam of fire bursting from his blade towards the ghostly skeletons!

Liam paused, then nodded. “I suppose... Rue is a very good friend after all.”

He was not aware about any feelings she had for him.

Sage sighed, shaking his head.

“You're probably thinking of my father, a vile man named Ryan McCall,” Sage said, deciding to be upfront about it. “I haven't spoken to him in years, and have no want to.”

Sage did not like his dad.

Blake smiled. “Don't worry about keeping me safe! Just worry about being yourself,” Blake said, taking Samara's hand now. “It's nice when you're out.”

-Ylisse-

Diarmund hesitated, then nodded, moving with Arturia and sitting down where she indicated, placing his spears carefully on the ground for now.

“It was... some being made of darkness. Shadows... they would... rip apart, reform, and flames... Green flames, tinted with some unholy evil,” Diarmund said, forcing himself to remember that fight. Unlike anything I had ever seen...”

"Your father is a very powerful man" Kanna said, making no inclination if she was disappointed or relieved that her daughter's friend was no longer associated with his father. "He has a lot of resources you would be foolish not to take advantage of-"

She paused and looked towards Joyce for a moment. "But he also has a lot of people who would love to see him dead. Or his son. Or his son's friends...."

[...]

Joyce stared down, but gave a little nod to Blake. She would never admit it, but she really liked it too. Her job, her entire purpose of existing was to protect Blake, but being separate from him made her feel like what she imaged humans felt like.
