[Hoshido]

[Tokohotsu Shrine]

As the massive ball of metal hurled towards her face, Tamamo stood still without flinching and just as the ball would have surely tore her apart, the floating mirror shot between her and the ball and the massive metal sphere smashed into the mirror's face.

Despite a colossal metal projectile slamming into the glass, there wasn't even the faintest trace of a crack – instead the ball was stopped completely and fell to the ground, as the floating mirror resumed flying around Tamamo. Whatever it was, that Mirror was far more than gold and glass.

Musashi frowned at the sight of Hiko. He was hurt, badly, but alive enough that he could speak and he could move – to some extent. It meant that he was at least not about to keel over, and that was the most important thing. An injured ally was never good news, but one that was so gravely injured he couldn't speak or move would be far worse, especially in this situation.

“You just get behind cover and try to keep safe,” Musashi told him, as he turned back to look at the massive Onryoki. “Don't worry about that beast, I'll stick him one good for you, just don't let things get worse on you, okay?”

Musashi then turned and focused on the Ring of Wind, letting its power fill his body and he shot forward at the speeds of a great gust.

His bravado for Hiko had mostly been show. Musashi knew that all it would take was one hit from this beast and he'd be just as bad off as Hiko, if not worse – but that was all the more reason not to let it touch him. He rushed forward watching as the beast jumped at Celeste and she blasted back with multiple orbs of magic.

The light show was impressive, but if Hiko's words were accurate then magic wouldn't be enough – but maybe it would give him an opening. “... Alright Musashi, you get one shot at this. Do it like Ryoma would.”

Running faster than he has before, Musashi drew closer to the beast and once he was close enough he jumped at it and unleashed a flurry of slashes. His hands moved like a blur, twin katanas slashing through the air repeatedly as he tried to chop, slice and stab the monster in every spot her could – one sword still billowing forth bright flames, the other simply a strong blade...

[Carriage]

“Camp out? Well...” Caitlin frowned, but they had little choice. She would have much preferred to reach the small village where she and Rue hailed from, but the road was still long and there was always the chance of more bandits.

Besides, Graham would need to rest after the healing, and Rue had already done a lot of healing today. Caitlin frowned and moved beside her sister. She bit her lip, and then her own hands started to glow with a much fainted version of the same golden light and she started to help.

Graham winced, but he could feel the pain leaving him and the severed flesh slowly mending. After a few moments, he moved his arm and although it was stiff and sore, the stab was gone and he didn't feel as lightheaded.

“That's amazing...” Graham whispered, turning to Rue and Caitlin. “Thank you.”

[Streets]

The path out of the Nohrian city was a slow go. There was patrols on the streets, but soon the group would find their way past them. Through several back streets they eventually came to the edge of the city – and to the tall mountains that separated the Nohrian Capitol from the rest of Nohr.

When they arrived, Garnet frowned. “... I've read about the pathways out of the Capitol. With the main gate not an option to us, there are only two. We can go over the mountain, or through it.”

She bit down on her lip. “Going over the mountain is a difficult climb, and I don't know if I'm physically capable of it. They say even the most experienced hikers have trouble on these mountains, and I've lived nearly my entire life behind castle walls...”

She shook her head, stopping the memories from coming. “... Which only leaves the path through the mountains. It's supposedly full of dangerous creatures, and... and I think my brother sometimes experiments in these caves. I don't know what we might find...”

“If I remember right, there's a river not too far from here. As soon as Graham can move, we'll head there, find someplace we can camp for the night, then we'll head out in the morning,”

Rue was exhausted, and wanted to voice her concerns about staying outside overnight, but she continued to dutifully heal Graham until she realized Caitlin was at her side contributing her own powers. The younger sister gave a small smile, turning back to her work until Graham's arm was almost as good as new.

“That's amazing...Thank you.”

"You're welcome" Rue said polietly, sitting back and taking a breath. "Are you sure you're alright? Everything working as it should?" she then turned to Liam and gave a small nod, but all the while she looked....Uncertain.

"But what about them?" she asked, motioning towards (but trying not to look directly at) the bodies around them. She felt horrible leaving the coach driver but had no clue what else they could do.

Train

Kanna was standing at the platform when she spotted Blake rushing towards her, the woman caught completely off guard as she was only expecting Joyce.

"Blake what are you doing here?" she asked, not upset, just surprised. "Are you okay? is anything the matter?"

"Grandma!" Joyce said, catching up to her brother, Sage at her side as well. She moved forward and hugged the older woman tightly. Kanna stiffened, but (kinda) returned it.

When she moved back Kanna looked over the three, eying Sage for a minute. "And you are....."

Meanwhile Samara was nowhere to be seen.....

“I'll be okay. You did a great job patching me up.” Graham smiled to Rue, and then looked over at Cait. “And thank you too Cait.”

“I barely helped.” Caitlin shook her head, and gave a sigh. “Important thing is you're going to be okay... but if you can move, we really should.”

Then Rue asked about the bodies, and Caitlin frowned. It was probably the first time Rue had been in a situation like this. “... I know this sounds bad Rue, but we just leave them here. If we stay and bury them, more bandits might come.”

Liam hesitated a moment, looking at the bodies. He had no desire to bury the bandits, they were responsible for all this, after all, but the driver...

“I'll take the driver to the side of the road,” Liam said, “We don't have time to bury him, but I'll get his body out of the way of the elements. We'll let people know about the attack as soon as we get to the next town, they can send someone over to handle everything.”

In truth Liam himself was feeling a little shakey, but he forced himself to calm his nerves, remembering his father staying calm in tough situations.

Train Station

“I was visiting Joyce and she said she was going to see you, and I thought it would be nice to see you again as well,” Blake told Kanna, smiling. He then paused, looking around and wondering if Samara had dissipated again.

Meanwhile, Sage gave Kanna a small smile, nodding towards her. “My name is Sage, I'm Joyce's... friend.”

Rue felt sick all over again when Caitlin told her that they would be left. While it made complete sense the girl couldn't imagine how the drivers' family would feel if they knew.

"B-But-"

“I'll take the driver to the side of the road, we don't have time to bury him, but I'll get his body out of the way of the elements. We'll let people know about the attack as soon as we get to the next town, they can send someone over to handle everything.”

Rue gave a stiff nod, face going a bit red. After a moment she recovered, rushing to Liam's side. "I-I can help."

While she was still feeling a bit nauseous she wanted to help. She had seen many people very close to death before now- and even a few that didn't make it despite her father's best efforts. Connor of course tried to shield his daughters from all that like any good father would- but he was also a doctor- and death (no matter how sad) was a part of it.

Train Station

“I was visiting Joyce and she said she was going to see you, and I thought it would be nice to see you again as well,”

"Well while i'm surprised, i'm happy to see you Blake" Kanna said honestly. She had always liked her grandson, she knew there was something different about him, something that made him special.

“My name is Sage, I'm Joyce's... friend.”

Instantly Kanna looked from Sage to Joyce, brow raised. Joyce shook her head, cheeks red.

"Grandmother, it's not like that!" she exclaimed "He's my best friend!"

".....Sure it isn't." the older woman replied, turning back to Sage. 'And your intentions with my granddaughter?"

"Grandmother!"

“...If you're sure, Rue,” Liam said, looking at the girl, “If you need to stop or anything, that's fine...”

He walked over to the driver, picking up one side, by the man's head, letting Rue pick him up by his feet, so they could move him to the side of the road.

“I got some of his belongings and money off him already,” Liam added to Rue, “We'll make sure they get to any family he has.”

Along with some extra from Liam's own stash, but he didn't say that out loud.

Train Station

“I'm Joyce's best friend,” Sage said simply, staring back at Kanna. “My intentions are purely honorable.”

Blake, meanwhile, closed his eyes and reached out.

“Samara, where are you? You can come out...”

Rue followed Liam over to the body of the driver, the girl hesistating for a short moment before she took a small breath and moved to pick up the man's feet.

“I got some of his belongings and money off him already, we'll make sure they get to any family he has.”

"I should have been faster...I probably could have helped" she said softly, trying not to look strained as she helped pull him to the side. She felt terrible, a good medic could defend themselves while still helping others, she could barely keep herself alive during that fight, it didn't give her much time to help anyone...

Train Station

Kanna inspected Sage for a moment, icy blue eyes glaring pretty dangerously as he explained himself.

"He's telling the truth, we've been friends for ages" Joyce added. "Blake is friends with him as well"

"Fine. But if I hear of anything you've done..." Kanna started, now eying Blake. He looked a bit strange..."What's the matter?"

“Samara, where are you? You can come out...”

"Are you sure....Are you sure she won't make me go away?"

As Rue and Liam went to work moving the body, Caitlin bit her lip and initially started forward to help them, but Graham placed his hand softly on her shoulder and shook his head.

“You can't shield her from things like this forever.” Graham whispered quietly.

“I know, but...” Caitlin sighed. The world was a dangerous place, Nohr especially so – but she had always hoped Rue would find a way to stay away from these kinds of things. Caitlin sighed, turning and leaning against Graham for a moment, her eyes half-lidded. “... I'm just glad I ran into her. If this happened when she was alone, I... I don't even want to think about what would happen...”

“She's tougher than she looks.” Graham replied.
“How would you know?” Caitlin frowned.
“She put up with you growing up.” Graham shrugged.

Caitlin slugged him in the shoulder, but at least she was smiling.

Didymus had been quiet the entire time they had been moving, staying close to Garnet and ensuring he kept his overcloak on, but not speaking a word out loud.

When Garnet spoke, he remained quite for a while, praying and contemplating what she had said. She didn't LOOK terribly muscular, and her smaller frame probably wasn't terribly suited for long mountain climbs-and they didn't bring a large amount of climbing or cold weather gear anyway. He wasn't about to tell her that she'd be physically incapable of it, but it could be an unnecessary risk.

Then she spoke of going THROUGH the mountain. He wasn't sure what to make of that-he was almost certain that there were horrors in there, and Paladin though he was, combat encounters while with such a high-value target-even against things that his Order specialized in taking down-were best avoided.

Of course, they could also be seen from the air if they tried to climb the mountain-it was obvious that Garnet's siblings knew where they were going, so he wouldn't be surprised if those blasted beast-riders would be watching the peaks.

"Your sister will probably be watching the summits." he replied to Garnet, the first time he had spoken out loud since the house. "And if indeed it's an easier journey on foot through the mountain, than it may be an easier matter-if only marginally-to go THROUGH it. Loathe as I am to venture TOWARDS an unholy bastion with any intention but to destroy or cleanse it. But you would know more of the risks inherent in each decision than us, so the choice is yours."

Once the driver was over at the side, Liam going back to the wagon and getting something to cover him, he walked over to Rue. He hesitated a moment, then pulled her into a hug.

“It's okay... focus on who you could save. If it wasn't for you, we could have lost Graham as well,” Liam said softly. “We're both still learning... I should have been faster too, defending everyone...”

Train Station

Sage frowned, knowing he hadn't done anything wrong, but was a bit worried about his father's reputation.

Blake nodded slightly, not towards Kanna, but towards Sama.

“She won't, I promise!” Blake said, then opened his eyes.

“A friend is coming out, don't be afraid, grandma, okay?” Blake said.

Roads

“It seems through the mountains is our best bet... Any other way will guarantee capture. Through there gives us a chance,” Zadkiel said, then nodded towards Didymus. “I am sure with all four of us, we can accomplish this mission.”

Aiden nodded, keeping pace with Garnet and staying near the princess. “Yah, with you and dad, we'll be fine!”

Rue placed the man's feet down as carefully as she could, realizing her hands were shaking even after she was no longer holding the weight. She knew what she wanted to do- she wanted to cry- but she didn't. She was tired, terrified and just saw more death than any teenage girl should have, but good doctors didn't cry.

She gave a small sigh, wiping sweat (and a few tears) from her face. When she looked up Liam had returned, and before she could react he pulled her into a sudden hug. Instantly her cheeks went red, the girl accepting the hug and burying her head against his shoulder with a soft thump.

“It's okay... focus on who you could save. If it wasn't for you, we could have lost Graham as well, we're both still learning... I should have been faster too, defending everyone...”

She gave a small nod against him. She then took a step back, looking back from Liam to Caitlin and Graham. "So what do we do now?"

Train Station

“A friend is coming out, don't be afraid, grandma, okay?”

Kanna couldn't help but to raise her brow at the announcement, but suddenly realized what he was talking about- as in a puff of dark smoke a young woman appeared in front of them. She looked so much like Kanna and Joyce that this could have been a very strange family reunion. The girl, Samara, instantly looked to Kanna, her red eyes locked on the older woman.

"You're his powers"

"I'm Samara" she said quietly before looking back to Blake "Or at least that's what i'm called"

[Carriage]

Caitlin was unusually quiet and somber. She was never good at tense moments, or serious occasions. She liked to keep things light and fun, but that was impossible after a moment like this – especially when her heart was breaking for her sister. Rue wasn't supposed to be around these kinds of things. She was supposed to be happy and blissfully unaware of how nasty the world could be.

“Maybe we should find a place to rest for the night. I doubt any of the surviving bandits will come back.” Caitlin shook her head. “I know we're all tired and sore and... well, we could use the rest.”

She wanted a chance to talk to Rue, and she knew rest and food would be good for them all – even if it was uneasy sleep on the ground and trail rations.

Graham, however, frowned and spoke up. “... We can't stop. I'm sorry, Cait is completely right in why we should, but... all this blood in the air will attract predators. There are much worse things than bandits we could run into...”

[Mountain Pass]

“Then through the mountain we go...” Garnet spoke quietly, frowning as she did. She was unsure – about a lot of things. Nothing had gone as she had hoped, but they couldn't turn back now. Too many had given too much to reach this point.

The walk to the cave entrance was short, and the path uneasy. The closer the group would draw to the maw of the cave, the greater the feeling of dread that would wash over them. The sense of something terrible dwelling in the darkness – the sensation of many legs scurrying and many eyes swiveling to watch them as they walked.

Garnet shook slightly as she walked. When they reach the cave entrance, she held up her staff and the rounded end began to emit a soft white light. “... We should keep a look out for any symbols written or drawn on the walls or floors.”

Rue stiffened at the idea of other... predators...being out there. She had no clue what that meant, but she also didn't want to find out. The teenage girl gave a small nod to Graham and Caitlin, deciding to just press on. If they all could do it then she would too.... She had no clue how far it would be to their home by foot but they had to at least try.

The girl then paused, looking around and spotting one of the bandits. She quickly rushed over and leaned down (trying not to make eye contact) and quickly grabbed a knife he had on his dead body.

"Okay....Let's go...."

Caitlin made a move towards Rue when she saw her move back closer to the fallen bandit, but stopped when she realized what her sister was doing. Something about seeing Rue holding a knife just made Caitlin groan – she doubted Rue had any idea how to use one for a fight.

“... You know, if you plan on traveling more, I should teach you how to use one of those.” Caitlin mentioned as she walked over to Rue. “But for now let's just get home...”

There was a loud howl, which came from the south. Deeper than a wolf's call. Graham frowned when he heard it, and stared off in the distance.

[Mountain Pass]

As the party stepped closer to the entrance into the inner mountain pass, Didymus could feel it-indeed, perhaps as a Paladin or believer, he was being warned-of some THING, or THINGS, of malice and wickedness in the mountains.

"What manner of symbols?" he asked.

Still, as they drew closer, and the sense of malice continued to grow-suddenly, he knelt, thrusting his sword on the ground point-first. As he knelt there, praying, his sword began to glow-a light illuminating their path as they approached the dark maw of the cave, and as he arose and opened his eyes, Didymus could see in turn where the evil that infested the caves dwelt.

"We must attempt to find the safest, yet most direct, way through the mountain." he said. "Stay close, Lady Garnet, but interpret, if you know these symbols, best you can. In the meantime...the sight I have been granted now shall let me see where these...things...dwell...even in the dark..."

He paused.

"And this light here may help keep them away, Lord willing, or at least make their advance upon us less...comfortable...to them...as well as giving us some illumination..."

He regarded the cave as they approached, thinking that Aiden would perhaps appricieate it if he said something about her staying close as well-but while he DID hope she would remain behind he and Zadkiel, his mission-and the one she was helping with-was to ensure Garnet's safe arrival...
