Thieves' village “Strong words hide weak action! If you have any true strength then push that blade into my neck… for if our roles were reversed, I would not hesitate. I would take delight in watching your blood flow.” "No." he simply said. "It's too bad you'd do that...and sometimes a life needs to be taken, and sometimes people forget that, especially my own...but I do not believe it necessary in this case." he simply said. “You are a feeble old man clinging to outdated values!” Didymus simply grinned, slightly, at these words. |

[Thieve’s Village] As they came down from the tree, the Elf had another comment to make. “You speak as if you have morals, but you travel openly with Tantalus! What kind of Paladin makes company of thieves?” At this, Cid’s eyes widened and suddenly he realized the game the Elf was playing. He immediately smashed the Elf over the head with his gauntlet, rendering him unconscious. “Confound it! He recognized our companions, and must have known that only an important quest would see Paladins work openly with Tantalus! He sought to delay us…” Cid shook his head. “Baku! Send your fastest runner north to York, and have him bring back the local Calvary to deal with these Aldmeri. In the meantime, bind their wrists and ankles, and gag their mouths! But then we must move on…” |

Thieves' village Didymus simply paused. "It would make sense...but it's not like the Tantalus are particularly secret. At least as an acting trope, if...nothing else...it may be a tad hasty to assume they have it all figured out. On the other hand, if they knew that Paladins were coming..." He sighed. "...well, someone messed up." He sighed again. This is part of why I'm so grim, perhaps...I question if we even have the competence or will or character, as a people, to really stand up to anything if secrets like this are slipping out... |

Mountainous Area Sai didn't pause for anything. The moment the cultists collapsed, he was already moving again, and as Gawain came in to slay two of the cultists like an avenging storm, Sai took care of the rest of them by carving a different symbol on his other palm with the same unnatural, blurring speed and clapped both his palms together, summoning forth what looked like a miasma of black and red energy that crackled like a storm cloud. Quickly running over the targets with his eyes, Sai designated each of the other cultists as a target... And let the magic flow, releasing the miasmic cloud out of its binding. Shadowy whips snapped out of the cloud, striking reach of the cultists... And the screams of agony mltiplied several-fold as the cultist's lives were simply drained from them, their energy sapped into the cloud. Their screams cut off abruptly and simultaneously, the cloud settling on Sai and fading into the elf's body as nothing was left of the worshippers of darkness except dry husks. "You need to find better mages, hoodsy. They don't know how to protect themselves from the corrupting effects of the magic here. Then again, competence is not something bad guys often have in spades." He half-turned his head, still watching the figure in the blue cloak. "Knight. Your orders." |

[Mountainious Area] Gawain was temporarily distracted as he saw what Sai did to the cultists and his blood boiled. "Knight. Your orders." “First of all, never do that again! What the hell are you thinking?” Gawain was horrified, and wondered just what kind of person he had met. Of course, now was the worst possible time to change his mind about Sai, since his only other allies – Cyrus and Glenn – were both in BAD shape. Gawain’s attention was turned back to the man in the blue cloak as he stepped forward; but once more the hooded figure ignored him, and focused entirely on Sai. “… How fascinating. With powers like that, why on Earth would you ally yourself with a Knight of Avalon? He will slay you for such magic. Come with me… my Master shall reward your loyalty.” The hooded mage stepped forward, and Gawain charged at him; but before Gawain’s righteous blade could strike him down the hooded mage simply vanished! He had teleported a short distance, and was now standing on a rocky spire several feet above them. There was no apparent path up to this point, and the mountain around it was too jagged to climb or jump. “I give you one choice, Elf! Behold! A temptation just for you!” Suddenly, a figure appeared, floating in the air. It was a beautiful elf woman with blue hair down to her ankles. She was scantily clad, and extremely attractive. [Thieve’s Village] “I would wager they had tracked Tantalus. They have stolen from the Aldmeri before, and are considered enemies of that nation. Baku was not as stealthy coming to Avalon as he believed.” Cid shook his head. Rage was clearly boiling in his veins, but he took a deep breath and closed his eyes, and a moment later he seemed calmed. “… Well, it cannot delay us. Our quest is one far too important to allow the Aldmeri to delay us. If anything, we must hasten in our steps! We will have to walk further and faster each day. Rest periods will have to become shorter. It is more important than ever that we reach Alexandria soon.” |

Thieves' village “I would wager they had tracked Tantalus. They have stolen from the Aldmeri before, and are considered enemies of that nation. Baku was not as stealthy coming to Avalon as he believed.” "Blast. Well, then let us hope they haven't guessed at our true aim for this little errand...though their knowledge of our path is most unsettling, and may suggest this was far more than just tracking Tantalus." Didymus said. “… Well, it cannot delay us. Our quest is one far too important to allow the Aldmeri to delay us. If anything, we must hasten in our steps! We will have to walk further and faster each day. Rest periods will have to become shorter. It is more important than ever that we reach Alexandria soon.” Didymus looked, like Cid, distressed. But unlike Cid, it wasn't rage that showed on his face. It was, perhaps...weariness. Frustration. Sadness, even? He shook his head and was quiet for a moment before looking up again. "Very well. Let us go." |

Mountainous Area Sai scoffed. "Don't judge me, knight. You just killed two of them without nary a word of warning, and you're harping at me for doing something more efficient when I took care of them. I just decided to use their magic as my own. Not my fault that all they had was the stuff I drained." He turned back to the blue-cloaked figure... And as the cloaked man spoke, Sai simply tried to clean out his left ear with his pinky, clearly showing that he didn't have much interest in what the man had to say. "Now see, there's a little problem with that. You can't buy my loyalty. No one can. And my services have ALREADY been bought, by this interesting knight..." He actually clapped a hand to his forehead the moment Gawain charged at the cloaked figure, shaking his head slowly. "... Knight, read the situation before you charge in like a fool. You want to bring Cyrus back with life still within him so he can see his homeland again. That means that you'll probably want to stay alive. So don't go charging head-first into the maw of certain death unless you're sure of your victory or have a plan B." He watched calmly as the man summoned up a visage of an elven maiden, and one of his eyebrows shot up, as he gained a terribly amused expression. "Oooooh? Heh, not bad for an illusion. Too bad I can see it for what it is. Again, no one can buy my loyalty. It's NOT for sale. And a pretty face is not going to make me want to work for you. Feel free to keep trying though, I really don't mind the eye candy." |

[Alexandria Castle Town] Didymus and Cid’s adventure – everything prior to this post – has actually taken place about a week before the rest of the story. Now, Cid and Didymus are in present time with everyone else. Okay? Anybody confused? No? Good. Didymus, Cid and the Tantalus crew had arrived in Alexandria. Tantalus was setting up in the castle garden, while Cid had taken Didymus off to the streets to walk and talk. “Alright, boy. Keep your cloak tight for the time being… we can’t attract attention as Paladins prior to the operation.” Cid reminded him as they walked. He had drawn his hood over his face, but the end of his beard stuck out. “We’ve finally made it… but now our quest only grows in danger. The plan is relatively simple. While Tantalus distracts the Castle and its Guards during the performance of ‘I Want To Be Your Canary’, we will sneak into Alexandria Castle, meet the Princess, and then make our escape. If all goes well, we will be on our way home in a matter of hours and will have nearly a full night’s ride to put distance between us and this nation before they discover Garnet is missing.” Cid paused. “Of course, in my nearly forty years as a knight, I’ve never seen a plan go perfectly. But, God willing, we will succeed without starting a war.” [Mountainous Area] Gawain shook his head. While there was no arguing that he fully intended to kill the cultists – and in his eyes they deserved death for what they had done – he was not comfortable with the way Sai had done it. Still, he could not worry about that at the moment. As he gazed at the beautiful half-naked elf woman, he had a very bad feeling that this was the most obvious trap in the world… and the fact that it WAS so obviously a trap worried him. The hooded mage laughed. “The illusion you see is not the woman; but merely the cloak around the rest of her! Zeromus, reveal yourself and dispatch these as you did the Knight.” Suddenly there was a change. The Elf Woman was still there from the waist up, but she was clearly not alive. She was merely the lure meant to entice the mage’s enemies close enough to be dispatched. She stuck out of the chest of a massive, demonic beast. It was ENORMOUS, at least fifteen feet tall. It was red and covered in a bony exoskeleton that resembled an insect. It had a massive tail, and an enormous torso. Two large arms stuck out with clawed hands; one of which gripped a sword; and its true head was that of a skull. ![]() Armored Insectoid Warrior ZEROMUS |

Alexandria Castle Town Didymus nodded. "Riding...well, Lord willing indeed, we can pull this off. But..." he shook his head. "Never mind. We must simply seek to be as prepared for worst-case scenarios or less than ideal ones as possible. Pray like there's no preparation, prepare like there's no prayer." He paused. It seemed highly unlikey that they would miss Garnet being absent, but that was really not something they could do anything about. Here they were, in this city... |

Mountainous Area Sai just kept watching rather dispassionately, before clapping a hand to his forehead and sighing again. This was... Well, it might have been more impressive if the enemy wasn't such a megalomaniacal drama queen. "I TOLD you, I knew it was an illusion, didn't you hear? Ugh, and this is why I hate evil these days. Everyone who claims to be evil is just an amateur trying to wear bigger clogs than their feet can possibly hold. It's a curse of some sort, I swear..." Still, he watched the creature reveal itself and quickly thought back to what he knew of the name. Zeromus... If this was the Zeromus that he knew about, then this was one serious breach of contract. But the form was different, like that of a giant insect instead. "Oh, not man enough to do the work yourself, so you decided to send for another minion? Sooner or later, you will run out of body-shields, and then you'll have to face me yourself, mage." Still, he didn't move from his position. "So, Knight. What ARE your orders? I'm still waiting for some sort of cue. Unless, of course, you want me to do this MY way..." |

[Mountainous Area] “Zeromus here is my own creation. A monster born of magic, and of death… he grows stronger on the bodies of his enemies. When I found him, he was just an insect… but now he is a creature worthy of the name Zeromus!” The hooded mage laughed, and it was clear that he was quite evil. He stood up on the rocky ledge and his hands began to glow with flames – which he promptly threw down, one at Sai and one at Gawain. Gawain jumped to the side, but he was more concerned with Zeromus. It was covered in a thick armor-like shell that would be difficult to break, and the spikes – and that sword – all looked like they could create a fatal blow in just one hit. “Help me slay this abominable beast!” Gawain called to Sai. [Alexandria Castle Town] “So long as we get Garnet during the show, we will have a window of time to make our escape. That is what is important… she will feign going to bed early, and with true luck will we have until morning.” Cid sighed. He hoped their luck would be that good, but he doubted it was possible. He led Didymus into a rather decrepit alleyway, where an short man with a large nose was waiting. “Doctor Tot?” Cid asked. “Indeed.” Tot nodded. “You must be the Paladins! Oh this is so exciting. I have studied all about Avalonian culture, it is truly fascinating! Tell me is it true that—” Cid cleared his throat. “Doctor, perhaps this can wait. We must focus on the mission.” “Oh, yes, well, right.” Tot nodded. |

Mountainous Area Sai answered with an almost derisive scoff to Gawain's order. "Sure, be a selfish bastard, hog the fun to yourself. Fine. I'll help YOU take the damn thing down. Just don't screw up, don't get hit, and keep an eye on that bastard in the blue cloak. Speaking of bastard in blue cloak..." He watched almost dispassionately as the flames drew closer to him, thrown by the hooded mage, and then derisively stepped to the side... And slid further away to avoid any backwash that may have come from the spell. Sai was quite familiar with the common fireball spell, and he got out of danger range quickly... And closed in on Zeromus, simply charging straight at the beast and coming in with... Just a simple punch! |

[Mountainous Area] “I find no fun in confronting this abomination!” Gawain called, and he had to jump to the side to avoid the fireball. Where the balls hit the ground, they exploded into a shockwave of flames that spread out about three feet. The flames waxed hot, and continued to burn for several minutes after impact. When Sai rushed forward and punched Zeromus, it did… absolutely nothing. The massive monster’s armored exoskeleton was as hard as a well-built castle wall! The monster looked down at him and let out a hissing roar; and it brought a massive hand towards Sai, attempting to crush him! |

Mountainous Area Normally, in a contest of strength, size wins everything. The larger the size of an object, the more momentum it could gather, and the more strength could be put into a single blow. But that's only laws of physics. When magic enters the equation, the balance is changed rather drastically. With spells that could simply aid strength and speed directly, it's no wonder that a man could lift something many times his size and weight without a problem. This was a textbook example. Sai was facing off against Zeromus in a face-off of strength, at least at the moment. The initial punch did nothing except move Zeromus about a foot backwards, for the thing was massive, strong and its carapace was probably stronger than many metals as well. In return, Zeromus went for a crushing blow... And Sai raised both his arms up so the gauntlets protected the arms from a direct blow and dook the strike DIRECTLY. The ground underneath him crushed inward, and he sunk a good foot below the level of the earth... But his body didn't bend and didn't break. "... Well, I guess that means that we need something a little bigger than fists to take this thing." One of the arms latched onto the massive hand that brought itself down upon him, and shoved it aside. While Sai wasn't physically strong enough to throw a beast as huge as Zeromus around without some conditional application of leverage, he could instead shove it about lightly. Thus freed from the giant hand, he jumped out of the two holes his legs left in the earth, and a red glow came from in between his arms, spreading and forming into a two-handed maul, a giant hammer made of Aurum and engraved with silver designs and runes. The weapon looked relatively simple, but the head of the maul shimmered like crushed diamond. Hefting the maul in one hand, Sai bounced it from one to the other, and smirked up at the beast. "Let's see how you fare against THIS baby." |

[Mountainous Area] Gawain was a noble man. He was uptight and stuffy, but he was a man of high morals. At this moment, though, he found himself torn. This Elf, Sai, whom he barely knew was a strange fellow… he had powers that frightened Gawain, and made him fear that this Elf was mixed up in dangerous and dark things that were best left alone. Gawain found the temptation to rush up to the hooded mage and strike him down, while leaving Sai to deal with the monster alone. Still, even if Sai was someone who mixed with sinister magicks, Gawain was the one who put him in danger, and so he had a responsibility to keep him alive, if he could. So Gawain rushed at the monster and struck with his blade; but it did not so much as scratch the monster’s thick exoskeleton. Zeromus looked to Sai and brought down his massive sword, trying to crush the Elf! |
