Thieves' Village Didymus held his sword tip to the elf's neck, ignoring his curses. He looked around, trying to decide whether to knock this elf out and move on or take him down from the tree now... |

Mountainous Area Sai was expecting something a bit more... Well, competent. Well, not to say that skeletons didn't have their own level of competence and a certain fear factor, but he expected demons. He expected someone powerful. He did not expect to be insulted by a bunch of undead, walking foot troops. Then again... Then again this might have just been a bunch of local residents raised by the taint of the land here. In either case, he was now facing off against skeletal warriors. Lots of skeletal soldiers with rusted arms, their numbers certainly a number that would make the normal person scream and run in fear, and the trained soldier to curse the heavens for granting them bad luck. Fortunately, what instead was facing the skeletal warriors was an Elven mercenary with a penchant for destruction, and a Knight of the Round, and BOTH were quite a few marks above the average and the mundane. "Skeletons. I feel almost insulted. This is not even worth my blades. Feel free to join in, Knight!" And without further ado or any special tricks, the elf simply charged right into combat, behaving quite unlike an elf in that respect and ignoring any sort of finesse for brute force. And by the goddess, he had a LOT of brute force. The moment he managed to get close to the first skeleton, he shifted to the side so his charge would not leave him impaled on a skeleton's rusty blade, and grabbed the unfortunate walking pile of bones. Then, without any effort on his end, he simply swung the skeleton like a club around himself, smacking another three of the skeletal warriors aside and shattering the one he was swinging around in the same move. "Come! Let's see if you can brawl as well as you can preach, Knight!" |

-Ankh-Morpork- Unseen University Vimes took a drag of his cigarette. While he liked the wizards, he was a bit iffy about using magic items. He preferred good old fashioned police work. But he supposed sometimes magic must defeat magic. “We better hurry then. I don't want another murder in my town,” Vimes said, heading out, glancing to Nanami. “Tell me, does this Magda work alone, or what kind of numbers does she have?” Vimes asked. The Library Jade simply stared at Musashi. Ben took a step back, not to take a swing at Musashi, but because he was pretty sure Jade was. Instead, she just smiled at Musashi. “I'm sorry, but I'll have to pass on that,” Jade said, “Though if you can tell me what this is,” she held up the Talisman, “Maybe you can take me out for dinner.” Ben frowned slightly now. -Vale Ruins- Garet pulled out his sword, staring at the water. “Maybe it's some ancient monster...” Garet said, “Aw man, I was hoping any monsters in here would be dead already...” |

[Ankh-Morpork] [Unseen University] Nanami walked along with Vimes, and when he asked about Maghda’s numbers, she had to shake her head. “Maghda leads a Cult. I could not tell you the size of the cult, but I know it is active all over the continent. They travel using transportation scrolls, which makes it difficult to track them.” Nanami was on edge, as always. She just knew that Maghda’s showing up in such a large city could not be a good thing. [The Library] Musashi sighed, shrugging his shoulders. “Yeah I figured you’d say that. Guess I’m still putting all my eggs in the ‘find and kill the guy who cursed me’ basket.” Musashi mused to himself. Then, with his mind off girls (for a few seconds) he noticed the Talisman in Jade’s hand. “Well, of course I can tell you what it is. It’s a Talisman! They’re extremely powerful magical artifacts. I… don’t actually remember all the details of what they are, I never paid much attention in my studies… but I know it’s a Talisman because it looks like this.” Musashi reached into his pocket and pulled out another Talisman, this one emblazed with a picture of a horse. [Mountainous Area] Gawain rushed forward, his sword drawn. In a few slashes, he managed to rip apart three of the skeletons with only a few slashes of his swords. The skeletons fell, their bones broken. “These enemies are insultingly weak!” Gawain called as he struck down another. “I cannot fathom how such foes could give Cyrus as much as a scratch!” However… as Gawain and Sai struck and slew the skeletal warriors and they fell apart, something very unnerving happened. The bones almost immediately floated up and reassembled, and the skeletons charged again! They were weak, but they did not stay down! “Be careful! These enemies are not made to kill us, only to tire us out! Someone seeks to weaken us and attack when we are not at our best!” [Thieves’ Village] The Elf growled, and even his teeth seemed to be pointed. Whatever the Aldmeri had done in the years since their split from the Hylilan, it had taken even a physical toll. Rather than appearing fair, this Elf looked almost monstrous. “Do you protect these thieves, human? Does your kind not have laws?” The Aldmeri taunted him. |

Mountainous Area Sai let out a loud, barking laugh at Gawain's warning. "Well, this just means that we get to have a lot of fun scattering the bones farther than they can reshape! I forgot how much FUN this was!" And he WAS just walking through the skeletons, doing immense amounts of damage as he did. Kicking left, his leg blasted through a skeleton's ribcage, splintering the spine and throwing the animated skeleton away into a solid rock, where the thing simply shattered. Grabbing to his left, he simply snagged a skeleton's skull, twisted it off with a simple wrist flick, and then sent it rocketing through a dozen or so other enemies with a simple kick. There was no finesse in his style, just straight brutality. And he was STRONG. MUCH stronger than anyone of his constitution should have been, especially when he actually grabbed a slab of stone that he stood on and FLIPPED it, burying four other skeletons underneath almost a tonne of solid rock. "This is fun! Come on, send some MORE!" A kick sent a fissure through the ground, cracking apart the stone as the directed fissure swallowed a few of the enemies, and he followed it by a nasty roundhouse that sent the skeleton behind him rocketing away. Not a single blade has even touched him while he fought. "If this is how they plan to tire me out, then they are SEVERELY underestimating me. Come on! Send some of those things that busied that Cyrus guy! Send something more at us! This is INSULTING!" A skeleton went flying right above Gawain, followed by another two as Sai... Well, started grabbing them and using them as missiles against others. |

[Vale Ruins] Felix did not like the look of this. Some ancient monster that had somehow survived all these years? Suddenly, a reptilian creature burst forth from out of the water, standing in front of them! It let out a horrible roar! ![]() The creature seemed to spark with some electric charge… [Mountainous Area] “By God, man! Conserve your energy! You’ll play right into their sinister hands!” Gawain scolded Sai. Gawain did not know Sai well, though, and he supposed it was possible Sai had some spell to keep him energized. Gawain neither knew or cared; but he hoped that his temporary companion was not taking undue risks. They were just two against an unknown enemy, and while Gawain WOULD face it alone if he needed to, he would prefer to have someone watching his back. Suddenly, something howled – it was an infernal noise that made Gawain feel cold down to his bones. Several large, demonic beasts rushed towards the two! |

Mountainous Area Well, at least Gawain was the sort to actually worry about his current comrades, no matter if he trusted them or not. And that definitely made Sai respect the man a little more. Mercenary work was often fraught with dangers from your own side as the mercs you worked with could just avoid telling you about some danger or other, which in the end would kill you. Sai himself was like that. But Gawain told Sai to conserve his energy. Sure, it might have been for more personal reasons, but at the same time, the actual intent behind it was clear. "Heh. Just keep swinging that blade of yours and don't worry about me, Knight. What I'm doing? I AM conserving energy." But that's when the new threat showed up, and Sai whistled loudly. "Heh! Looks like you get to have some revenge, Knight! Those would be the beasties that tore up your friend's place. Hell Hounds, huh... THIS is starting to get fun. Looks like my taunting worked after all." Now, however, the threat was many times the norm. The skeletons were a great distraction, and they kept putting themselves back together, while the dogs were the MUCH more damaging beasts. Sai didn't seem too concerned though as he grabbed the nearest skeleton... and actually tore it in half, knocked the rusty blade out of one of its hands, and then started to power-press half of the skeleton into a solid ball of crunching bones. And as the nearest hound closed in, Sai let the ball fly, smacking dead-center into the dog's center of mass, sending it flying a good 50 feet away and into a large rock. "Even THIS isn't worth my blades!" Though now, he fought a little more carefully. There was still very little finesse in his motions, and he was still delivering absolutely brutal punches, kicks and slams, but now he ducked out of the way much more often, avoiding the leaping dogs. "Watch out for their leaps, knight, and don't get pinned by any of them. Also, try not to end up in-" He suddenly jumped aside, avoiding a gout of flame. "- range of their breath. Like that one." Two steps and a punt later, the hound that breathed flame at Sai was sent flying as well. |

[Mountain Area] “Revenge turns the heart black, I seek only justice!” Gawain replied as he caught one of the Hell Hounds in the mouth with his blade, tearing the beast apart. As it fell, its body oozed a thick red substance that burst into flames as it splattered on the ground. The Hell Hound’s blood burnt hot, creating flames that flickered up into the skies above. Gawain found his sword coated in the hound’s blood, which gave the blade a flaming appearance as he cleaved through a few skeletons. “I fear even these fell beasts are not the endgame! Be alert for something worse!” In the distance, as if to confirm Gawain’s thoughts, there came a scream. “That voice…? It cannot be!” Gawain looked horrified. [Thieve’s Village] The Aldmeri scoffed, shaking his twisted head. His dark eyes narrowed at Didymus and he seemed unafraid of the sword at his neck. “Compassion is another word for weakness. To allow these vagabonds to live is to condone what they do! I had heard that you humans stuffed your criminals into dungeons and tried to rehabilitate them… truly your race is weaker than they say!” In the Aldmeri Dominion, there was only one penalty for breaking the law. Have I mentioned these guys are the bad guys? “Nay, Elf! You are blind to true strength.” From the ground, Cid had been listening – and fighting. He had subdued two Aldmeri swordsmen without killing them (though he had grievously injured one of them, and the other was KOed). “Didymus! You’ve done better than I in keeping a conscious prisoner! Bring that scoundrel down!” |

Mountain Area "And this is exactly why punching is a much better alternative to using a sword." So speaking, Sai sidestepped another hound, grabbed it in his left arm in mid-leap, and simply flicked the hand, causing the beast to fly in a parabolic arc and slam into the ground. With a spin, he used his other hand to smack aside a pesky skeleton, raised a leg and brought it harshly down onto the beast, scoring his first kill of a hellhound. The one he threw into a rock before finally shook itself free of dizziness and rushed him from behind, which prompted the man to duck, letting the beast fly above him. With a flick, the dead hound was picked off the ground by the same leg Sai was still holding, and he used it as a bowling ball to knock aside a good dozen shambling skeletons. "Revenge and righteous vengeance are born from the same act and have the same result. You just choose one over the other." The second dog, the one he previously punted away, went to attack Gawain, but Sai didn't let it move far at all, and a small pebble found its way into the dog's skull through the ear, sent flying along by a mighty throw from the dark-skinned elf. That's when the scream came. "... Well, that's not good. Come on, time to stop wasting time with these toys and get a move-on!" And he simply dashed straight through the skeletons and two leaping dogs, knocking them aside like pins in a bowling alley, clearing the path for Gawain as well as he moved towards the scream. |

[Mountainous Area] Though the flames were dying down, Gawain slashed his sword at the skeletons and hell hounds as he followed Sai. He cut down a few more skeletons, and cut one of the horns from one of the hounds. As the two rushed on, they would come upon a hill. At the top, they could look down into a steep valley where several figures stood. Most of them were humans or elves dressed in robes and pointed hats. These figures stood in a circle, chanting in a mysterious language that was unpleasant to the ear. Around them, in the middle of the circle was a knight who wore armor similar to Gawain’s – Sir Cyrus! He was kneeling, clutching a bloody wound on his side and gritting his teeth in pain. At the ground next to Cyrus was a younger man who was screaming in agony as dark magic raked his body. Finally, standing in front of Cyrus and the younger man was a figure in a blue cloak. “Let the boy, go!” Cyrus commanded, and he tried to stand and pick up his sword but immediately he faltered and went back to one knee. It was clear Cyrus had received horrible injuries, and a lesser man would have already succumb to death. “… He sealed his fate when he followed you, Cyrus of Avalon.” The hooded figure sneered. “You dared to slay my brethren, and now you must pay with blood!” “Blood! Blood! Blood!” The cultists chanted, finally speaking something in the common tongue of the continent. Gawain looked down, horrified, and immediately he charged forward! |

Mountainous Area Sai had only a few seconds to take in the sights. A circle of chanting cultists, a boy being targeted by a nasty ritual, and a man in a blue cape who definitely had the vibe of someone with a purpose. He had several options, and they just became a lot more limited as Gawain charged blindly onward. Option one, ignore the boy, take out the cultists, take on the man in blue cape. Downside being possibly not getting paid as the boy dies. They found Cyrus, so he would at least get the payment for THAT, but... Heck, this was almost too short of a job. Sai hoped that this would be the sort of job that made him search for weeks with smart people actually doing multiple gating, concealing magic, and just generally being elusive. Ok. So option one was out. Option two was to get the boy out of the way, kill the cultists, take on the man in the blue cape. This while protecting that Cyrus character. MUCH more likelihood of getting paid AND a prospect for future employment. Downside being the fact that he now had two friendlies in an enemy zone. Option three, abandon payment, and do whatever the hell he wanted. And maybe starve within a few weeks while gaining bad rep with the Knights. ... Well, he also had a few other options, but those were the general gist of things. And he REALLY wanted to be paid for this one. Option two it is. The two red gems on his gauntlets flashed briefly, almost imperceptibly, and his hands vanished in a blur of accelerated motion, snapping out multiple scrolls out of some sort of storage or another. Then, he quickly snapped one of the scrolls open, activated the portal scroll, and used it as an active teleportation effect instead of a stationary gate, transporting himself instantly to Cyrus's side. Scroll used, the useless piece of paper flew to the side as Sai quickly snapped out a dagger and carved something in his own palm in a blur, activating the rune in just over two and some seconds from its beginning effect, slamming it to the ground... And appearing in the area of suffused dark magic where the boy used to be a second ago, the boy displaced to where Sai slammed his hand to the ground. And now, the dark elf was the one who was being targeted by the sadistic magic of the cultists... And grinned a grin that could only be the beginning of a nightmare. Seizing the magic of the ritual and linking it with his own, he played the part of a ravenous beast at a feast, devouring the energies being used by the cultists and absorbing it, suffusing his own reserves with it. But this granted him a certain amount of control over the energy flow... And he REVERSED it, sending all that dark magic as an uncontrolled feedback right into the hooded figures. "I would say good evening, but it had been spoiled by your lack of hygiene." |

[Mountainous Area] Sai’s little trick had been unexpected to say the least. The circle of Cultists suddenly had their dark deeds reversed on themselves, and many of them screamed and tumbled back, falling to the ground as pain radiated around their bodies. The spell they had been chanting was a powerful one, and having it turned back on them caused many of them to writhe in pain as their bodies began to convulse. “Who are you?” Cyrus immediately was on guard. He saw this strange Elf wander into the middle of a spell and reverse it; and it immediately tensed him up. Yet the Knight was injured, and could not move. Gawain faltered, surprised to see Sai’s trick and even more surprised to see the Elf reach Cyrus before him. Still, he charged on, and he slew two of the Cultists as they tried to return to their feet. He rushed to Cyrus’ side. “Cyrus! My friend, you live! And… Glenn…” Gawain looked to the now unconscious boy who had been subjected to the spell. “Gawain… How I wish I could say you had arrived in time to save me, my dear friend, but my fate is sealed.” Cyrus said with a hint of sadness in his voice. It was only now that Gawain got a better look at his injuries. The left side of Cyrus’ chest had been cut open, as if by a massive blade. It was abundantly clear that Cyrus was on death’s door, and indeed miraculous that he was even awake with his injuries. “Save my squire!” Cyrus commanded, and Gawain took his friend’s hand and nodded. “We shall… but I cannot leave you to die in this black land! If you must die this day, you shall die in the land you loved!” Gawain had every intention of taking Cyrus back to Avalon. But then… the hooded figure spoke. “A Knight of Avalon… traveling with one so… dark?” The figure looked to Sai. “You are quite interesting, Elf. Only once have I ever felt the power of so much blood ritual…” Cyrus looked up at the hooded figure. “He is one of the Cult’s Masters! He worships the power that died in these black lands… and he has a most terrible creature under his command! He must be stopped, Gawain! Even at the cost of our lives, he must be stopped!” |

Thieves' village Didymus reflected on the elf's words. "You know what? In many regards, you're right. We have THOUSANDS of people-murderers, rapists, molesters-who we can't change. Who we never will change. Who will do it again as soon as their sentence is served. And yet many of my people STILL insist that no matter what someone has done, and no matter how likely, even certain, it is they'll do it again, the death penalty MUST NOT be used. And frankly, I'm not proud of this fact." He paused. "But with sins already paid for I don't think we really need to kill everyone who may happen to break a law or two. Besides, I'm a Paladin. I HAVE to preach the hope of repentance." Didymus nodded at Cid's statements. "Alright, nice and easy. Down the tree." he said to the prisoner. |

[Thieves’ Village] The Elf saw that he was baiting the Paladin, and a sinister grin spread across his pointed face. “Strong words hide weak action! If you have any true strength then push that blade into my neck… for if our roles were reversed, I would not hesitate. I would take delight in watching your blood flow.” Cid looked up and scoffed. “That is precisely why you shall never defeat Avalon. You lack compassion, and you lack understanding of repentance. I have seen the wicked turn from their ways. As it stands, you have not committed any crime that warrants your execution, despite how much you seem to desire it.” The Elf spat at Cid. “You are a feeble old man clinging to outdated values!” Cid shook his head. “Nay, Elf! We cling to the Truth, and to that which is Just!” |
