Covered wagon When the thief jumped forward, Didymus drew his sword. "This only means trouble. If thieves are glad that we're here, than something even WORSE must be in the area." he said to anyone in the area. "So, what's going on?" There was literally a laundry list of things in his mind-all of which he had seen examples of already in some way, shape, or form. |

[Thief Village] The thief looked up at Didymus and then he rubbed his neck, backing away from Cid – who looked quite angry and confused. “Well… we… we screwed up. We stole a gilded sword... from the Aldmeri.” Immediately, there was a silence that fell over the group. Baku seemed horrified, and the other Tantalus members all looked around in terror. “Fool!” Cid shouted, shaking his head. “I know, I know!” The thief shook his head. “An Aldmeri warrior came here earlier… he told us we had until sundown to return the blade or we would all die…” Cid stood frozen. It was utterly stupid for them to have stolen from the Aldmeri, but the idea that the Dark Elves would be active on Avalon’s soil made his blood boil. “Then return the blade, fools! I’ll not have the Aldmeri operate on Avalon’s soil, but you are guilty! Return it so that all of this can be avoided.” Cid commanded, and in that moment it was clear he spoke with authority and confidence. “… Yes… well…” The thief gulped. “We lost it… we don’t have it… but the Aldmeri don’t believe us…” |

Camelot Castle Gates Sai shrugged. Gawain was either being stubborn or deaf, and Sai didn't exactly care which. He wasn't here to talk after all, and talk was pointless. Actions spoke far more than words, and he was perfectly fine with acting. Thinking wasn't exactly his major forte, and he often said things that got him in trouble. Even if they WERE true. So, instead of arguing the point, he followed Gawain to... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cyrus's Cottage As usual, Sai spoke his first impression. "This the place? I expected more out of a Knight of the Round... Though if he lives simply, I can't really argue." Stepping right up top the front of the cottage, Sai looked around first, checking for any sort of signs of struggle, then walked right up to the door and pressed his hand to it. The first part was magical detection of any lingering energy, wards or any such signs. Once done with the scan, he ran one on magical traces of those with high power that might have passed through and left a trail. After said scans, he closed his eyes and concentrated. Now came the tricky part, and the part that Gawain might have the most problem with. He was detecting BLOOD. Sai himself was imbued with such an enormous supply of blood-based magic that his instincts were imprinted with it, and his sense for blood and its power rivaled those of a vampire. With that much energy at his disposal, the signature buried the distinct smell of "Dark Blood Magic" underneath the sheer enormity of his reserves, like masking the smell of rot in a windstorm. The abilities allowed that magic to leak free, however, and it became a bit more distinctive. Sure, to those that couldn't FEEL magic and identify it by sense were still clueless, those that COULD feel it could detect the taint. Sai himself didn't care though. He was just doing his job. "... Blood. Lots of it, much more than the average accidental amount. Your friend has very powerful blood, knight, and quite a bit of it has been spilled." He tried to rattle the door, but it was closed and locked, so he was about to break the door down when he remembered he had a key. Shrugging, he calmly unlocked and opened the door, stepping inside... |

[Cyrus’ Cottage] The inside of Cyrus’ cottage was torn apart. The Knight lived a simple lifestyle, with little need for frills or fancy things. Mostly he owned a great deal of books, which were strewn about the room. The shelves were overturned, and his bed had been broken. The curtains were slashed, and there was something heavy on the air. Sai would sense some magic in the air, but there was no evidence that Cyrus had been killed. |

Thief village Didymus paused, silently praying for a moment. Then he looked over the sharpness of his blade. "Elder, it's quite simple. I've spent the bulk of my time since ordaining FIGHTING the...Aldmari..." He was clearly...feeling a tad angry. "...it would be nice to resolve this peacefully, but frankly? They did us a favor in denying the Aldmari a weapon. Those elven heathens have no love for men. They CONSTANTLY press and test and skirmish with us, it doesn't take a strategic genius to see that this is just the calm before the storm, in all likelihood. This may not even be turning the other cheek here, this is a nation defending itself." He paused. "But perhaps we aren't OFFICIALLY at war with the Aldmari, in which case it would perhaps be our duty to recover the sword and not kill this operative or send him back to their lands bound, gagged, and defeated..." "...blast." |

Cyrus's Cottage Sai chuckled darkly. "So much for the superiority of light and Cyrus's skills talk. Skill doesn't matter much when you're outnumbered and overpowered..." He calmly started to walk around the cottage, taking note of the many markings here. Sword slashes, knife cuts, torn cloth and slashed up furniture mostly made the scene. He didn't now who exactly was the attacked, but he could now distinguish the attacker and the defender. And with the amount of blood around the place, Cyrus must have put up quite a fight, since most of the liquid of life wasn't his. "Hey, Knight. You might want to take a look here and see for yourself. And then, you might want to tell me about this cult that Cyrus has had contact with." |

-Ankh-Morpork- Unseen University “Ahhhh, horrors. We don't condone this kind of thing around here, you know!” Ridcully said, “Stibbons!” “Yes sir?” Stibbons asked, sighing softly. “Where's that thingie?” “What, errr...'thingie' do you mean, Archchancellor?” “The thing that tracks magical energies, of course!” Ridcully said, scoffing slightly, aiming his crossbow as the Bursar freed himself, “That should help them track down that witch.” “But...they're not part of the university. We're just handing over University property to...The Watch?” Stibbons asked, looking a little aghast. “I'm sure Commander Vimes will give it back when they're done,” Ridcully said, expertly pinning the Bursar again, “Besides, it's not like we use the damnable thing. In the walls here it just spins wildly. Too much magic around here.” Ponder Stibbons sighed, then hurried off. After a few minutes he returned, producing an odd device. It had a nozzle on one end, with a dial up front behind it. It looked almost taped together, with a small jar closed up and attached to the nozzle through a tube. “Here you go,” Stibbons said, handing it to Vimes who looked it over. “What you do is find a trace of the magic you want to find, then sample it,” Stibbons explained, “Then it will lead you to the source. But it's not much good without a sample...” Vimes shrugged, turning to Nanami, “Think there'll be magic still at the first murder here? Best bet we got.” The Library “Well, kinda...” Ben said, then glanced towards Jade, who shrugged. “We're trying to identify something. I think it might be Wutai or Xing, but I'm not sure,” Ben added. Jade pulled out a small gray object, a red picture of a rooster on it. “Any idea what this is?” Jade wondered. -Vale Ruins- “I'm okay...” Garet mumbled from the floor, picking himself up and rubbing his head. He gasped, looking around, “Oh wow...this place...it's beautiful! Isaac, Jenna, get down here already!” |

[Ankh-Morpork] [Unseen University] Nanami looked at the strange device, and her first thought was that it was underwhelming… but she knew not to judge a book by its cover. She assumed that the wizards here at Ankh-Morpork’s famous university knew what they were doing, at least to some degree. “Yes. I’m positive there will be. Whatever spell Maghda is casting when she kills her victims, it lingers in the air until she has finished all of the murders. I believe it is how the fire starts; once she had finished her dark deeds, each of the murder sites burst into flames.” [The Library] “Hmmm…” The Wutainese boy leaned forward, examining the gray stone in Jade’s hand. He paused for a moment, as he seemed to become distracted. “Ah! How rude of me, I didn’t introduce myself. I am Musashi, of the Miyamoto clan. It’s one of the twelve Imperial clans of Wutai.” The boy introduced himself. “I’m actually in Ankh-Morpork trying to find a rather evil sorcerer, who put a death curse on me.” If it seems like suddenly Musashi was ignoring Ben’s question… that’s because he is. He’s also ignoring Ben. To be fair, what did you expect? “See, if I don’t slay the sorcerer who cursed me by midnight on my twenty first birthday, I will die… and I am the last of my Imperial bloodline. If I die, the Miyamoto clan will die as well.” He rubbed the back of his neck. He was trying to find exactly the right words to convey what he meant. “Hey, so I just met you, and this is crazy… but I have to preserve my bloodline, so… wanna have a baby?” Musashi asked, taking Jade’s hand. … I am entirely too amused by this joke. [Cyrus’ Cottage] Gawain was not amused by Sai’s commentary, and not for the first time he found himself wondering if he had taken some temporary leave of his sanity by hiring an elf for this. Still, Gawain knew that none of the Knights had been able to find Cyrus, and elves were notoriously good trackers. And to help his friend, Gawain would endure the company of Sai. “I have Cyrus hewn down scores of enemies in the thick of battle before,” Gawain said, shaking his head. “It seems odd that he would fall, even if he was outnumbered. Something is not right here…” Gawain pondered. “Had Cryus been captured… then why is there no drag marks outside? There are no horse tracks, and no sign that a group carried him off… I feel as if we are missing something.” As he walked around the room, Gawain suddenly paused. A sense of dread came over him and he stared towards the corner. He felt a coldness radiate from it. “… Tell me, you seem to be sensitive to the presence of dark magic… do you feel anything from that corner?” [Thief Village] “The Aldmeri are a threat, of that there is no doubt… and I have clashed with them many times.” Cid said, slowly and methodically in his words. “… but these thieves have given the Aldmeri an excuse to cross our border! They can move their spies into Avalon, and claim to be searching for thieves who have wronged them… and if we strike them down, they shall paint Avalon as the aggressor.” The wheel’s in Cid’s mind were turning, and he was rapidly becoming more and more convinced that this whole thing… stunk. “… Tell me thief, how did you steal a gilded sword from the Aldmeri to begin with? Do they not protect their weapons and treasure with a feverish intensity?” Cid asked, and his mind grew suspicious. The thief looked nervous. “Ah… well… we, ah, got lucky you know. But please, you must help us! You can’t leave us here for when they come…” Cid was silent. “… Brother, I think we are being led astray.” Cid said at length. “Think about it for a moment! The bridge we need to take is out, and now we come upon an unlikely town of thieves, who have given an opening to one of Avalon’s most dangerous enemies… Aldmeri hostility is one of the few things so important that even I would tarry in our quest to fight them back.” The thief was suddenly looking a lot more fearful. “N-No… I am telling you the truth!” Cid’s eyes narrowed. “Aye, to an extent you are… you did steal from the Aldmeri, but I do not believe they would give you until sundown to return the sword. They hate and despise humans! They would strike you all down… unless you offered them a better prize for their trouble…” Before the thief could speak, a arrow flew from out of the trees and struck him in the back of the head, killing him instantly. Another flew towards Cid, while yet another came at Didymus. Cid slashed with his sword, cutting down both! “To arms, my brother! Let us show these foul elves they shall neither deceive nor delay us!” |

Thief village As soon as the words "they come" left the theif's mouth, Didymus' guard was up and he had his sword drawn, scanning the area with his eyes. He had served long enough to begin to recognize an ambush when he saw one. With a silent prayer, he charged after the arrows appeared! He charged into the thicket, and at the first aldmari he saw he intended to disarm him, then knock him out with a solid pommel blow to the jaw. |

Cyrus’ Cottage By the time Gawain stepped in and spoke, Sai ended up standing in the center of the room, looking around. Something DIDN'T add up. Not at all. Cyrus was strong. That much was obvious by the amount of damage around the inside of the cottage, and the fact that sword marks were everywhere. That by itself meant that this Cyrus character wasn't any average knight, but yet another of these marvelous one-in-a-half-million people that could hold their own against thousands of enemies in the right circumstances. "Your friend Cyrus didn't go down without a fight, and would NOT have gone down at all if they didn't bring in additional pets. Your friend is definitely strong, knight." He walked over to the area which Gawain pointed towards, and nodded. "... Yup. Well, this is what happened then. Cyrus was resting and doing his usual rituals. I think he was meditating or resting, because he was on the bed. A portal opened exactly where you pointed towards, a portal... Don't know from where yet. Through came... Some sort of dog-like creatures. Hell-hounds, I am assuming, but it may be something entirely different. They were big enough to cause trouble though, and the scorch-marks and claw marks all over the place was because they tore up the place. Cyrus snapped his blade up, started fighting while the portal let through five... Humans. No, four humans and an elf. They then proceeded to hold the portal from this side. Then..." He stopped right in front of the area tainted with magic, and turned about. "... Someone or something powerful came through. Something that could have torn apart this place without a second thought, something that was holding BACK when it magicked Cyrus into helplessness while he was fighting the dogs. Distraction was what got your knight friend, not lack of skill." He turned about, bringing a hand up. "Hmmm... The portal's a simple one, typical magic. The taint didn't even come from the portal, it came from whatever stood here for a few moments while weaving magic. Definitely someone more skilled in the art than I am." He turned around again, looking at the corner... And then suddenly snapped his head up to look at Gawain. "I can trace the portal, since it's typical magic. It was only lightly shielded, and I can trace it back to its origin... Or I can even open a portal TO said origin again, using the trace as a line. The question is, do you want to follow, or will you call on so,me of your knightly friends for this? I've got NO idea what's on the other side, but I am sure as hell going to find out." |

[Cyrus’ Cottage] Gawain’s eyes narrowed as he saw what had happened. The cottage was destroyed, and the news that Cyrus had been attacked by demonic forces was troubling – extremely troubling. The very cult Cyrus had so valiantly driven out seemed to have come back for revenge. “If you can open the portal, then do so, quickly! I shan’t allow my friend to be in the clutches of these vile types of people for a second longer!” [Thieves Village] The Aldmeri nearest the entrance of the woods was struck by Didymus and fell backwards. A second was knocked down by Cid, who bashed him in the head with a gauntleted hand. In the woods, though, another two were in the trees firing arrows down at them! [Vale Ruins] Felix was already exploring as Isaac spoke to the others. He was examining one of the great stone pillars, his hand glowing lightly with psynergy as he touched it. “This place… it’s ancient! I think we’re the first living things down here in decades.” Then, there was a low, gurgling sound from somewhere beneath the water. “… Or… maybe not.” Felix gulped. |

Cyrus's Cottage Sai just had to let out an amused guffaw at Gawain's eagerness and hastiness to get things under way. Not like he minded all that much, Sai rarely did any extensive strategic thinking, preferring battlefield tactics to long-thought-out plans and counter-plans. It was much easier for him to think on the fly. Gawain's hastiness just went along with his own wishes perfectly. "Well then, let's get this party started." Sai's skills in magic were only moderate. He wasn't any grand mage, he couldn't call down the wrath of the heavens upon anyone, and he certainly couldn't rob someone of their life with a snap of his fingers. But when it came to rune-craft... That was an entirely different ballpark. Quickly grabbing the knife from his belt, Sai began to draw a pair of circles on the ground, each asymmetrical to the other. The design was quickly inscribed into the floor with the knife tip, and both of the circles began to glow faintly as ambient magic began to fill the design. Then, he simply placed a hand on the first circle, and the entire design flared a bright red... And a bright-red line traced in the air, opening like a vertical eyelid to show a blurred, wavy image of whatever was on the other side. Sai quickly motioned Gawain to follow and stepped through... |

Thieves village Didymus deflected an arrow with his sword, then another. He rushed at the tree, and with a prayer, hopped up it and ascended it, eventually coming upon the archer. As he moved, he was steady, silent, focused. It was as if the troubles and thoughts which plagued him...had at least been pushed to the back seat. He eventually got to the archer, and swung his sword, breaking (or trying) to break the bow, and then holding the tip of his blade at his foe's neck! |

[Cyrus’ Cottage] Gawain found himself in an unusual situation. He was in the home of his friend, who was missing, and now he was taking the help of a elven mage to follow whomever had taken Cyrus through a portal. Transportation Portal scrolls were not uncommon in Eptina (the continent where all of this takes place). They were, though, rarely used in Avalon. The mage population in Avalon was rather small, and while many non-mages would use Portal Scrolls, they weren’t widespread in Avalon. Still… while Gawain was not entirely comfortable with Sai’s help, or with the magicks he used; he wanted to find and save his friend. Gawain believed that the ends would justify the means if it meant bringing Cyrus home safely. When the portal open, Gawain followed Sai with his sword drawn… [Mountainous Area] The portal Sai had reopened led to a dark, dank land. They were high in the mountains and Gawain immediately felt light headed from the thin air up at this altitude. The skies above them were gray, and the mountains were black and cracked. It took Gawain only a moment to realize where they most likely were… “The Morgul Mountains!” Gawain gasped. They were on the border between Alexandria and The Dark Lands. It was in this very mountain range where The Dark Lord had fallen before the King of Men and the King of Elves. Before Gawain could say any more, they were suddenly surrounded. By skeletal warriors! [Thieves Village] The Aldmeri in the tree gasped, shocked that the human had managed to so nimbly reach him. His bow was broken, and he was defenseless. He spoke in an Elvish language, but from the tone he used, he was cursing and swearing at Didymus. Meanwhile, Cid was engaged in combat on the ground. He disarmed one of the Aldmeri with his sword, and kicked another down to the ground. |
