I can't see what you're imagining
|
-Vale Ruins- “Maybe some Psynergy?” Garet suggested, holding up his hand towards the door, concentrating. “Move...” he muttered, a white hand appearing, trying to force the door open! -Ankh-Morpork- Streets “Hmmm...Tots, Tots...can't say I know him. Though I don't tend to hang around other inventors. They can be a little off,” Hammah said, not realizing just how off he was. “We can try some of the shops I go to for parts. They might know someone.” Pseudopolis Yard “Ahhh...I've heard of this witch,” Vetinari said, pushing open the door to Vimes' office, the man looking up from his desk. “Can I help you, sir?” Vimes asked, “Only I have a lot of paperwork to get through.” “Oh, just dropping by, Commander,” Vetinari said idly, “I was going to summon you to the Palace, but I thought it might be a refreshing change of pace to visit you.” Vimes paused, then looked over Vetinari's shoulder at Nanami. “And who is she?” Vimes asked. He knew she wasn't a copper, and that armor looked much to nice for someone wanting to join. “Someone with a grave warning, it seems,” Vetinari said, entering the room, then offered the only other chair to Nanami, “It seems she has information regarding that strange murder you found this morning.” Vimes frowned. He wasn't too surprised Vetinari knew about it, but this girl had information? Instantly he became even more suspicious, and his default was not to trust any bugger even if they were standing in a brightly lit room, arms up and surrounded by coppers. Contrary to popular belief, there was never much murder in Ankh-Morpork. There was a lot of suicide though. Calling a troll a 'rock' was suicide. Making short jokes in a dwarf bar was suicide. Eating Dibbler's sausages was, some viewed, a slower form of suicide. Oh, there were assassinations, the Assassin's Guild had to make money, after all, but they always left a card. But what Vimes saw this morning...Heck, he had buried himself in some paperwork just to try and forget it. “Alright...who are you, and what do you know?” Vimes asked Nanami, “And if I think you're lying to me, then I'm going to have you talk to Sergeant Detrius.” Sergeant Detrius was a troll, who had taken a seige bow and modified it shoot a large number of arrow shafts. It didn't so much as pierce things, as make them no longer be there any more. |

[Ankh-Morpork] [Pseudopolis Yard] Nanami was used to being suspicious. She had been traveling across the continent for several years, with no permanent home and not many friends. She also usually walked around in full armor with a sword and a magic wand, and she had been known to kill a lot of people at once, so she deserved some of the suspicion. “My name is Nanami Nomura. I have been tracking a murderous coven led by a witch called Maghda. They have been committing murders in several smaller cities. Each time, they commit six murders in a ritualistic fashion. After the sixth murder, a massive inferno is started. The smaller cities have been destroyed. Ankh-Morpork is too large for that to be plausible, but if the same type of fire starts, it would still devastate a portion of the city.” Nanami’s eyes darkened. “Maghda is a most dangerous woman. She must not be underestimated. If she has come to Ankh-Morpork, I can guarantee you that she has horrible plans for your city.” [Streets] Rosario nodded. “That would be great! It’s very important that I find him.” He paused, looking to Kasumi, and wondering if she would be interested in helping him too. [Vale Ruins] The door seemed to react to Garet’s psynergy, but not by opening. Instead the symbol of the sun started to glow! Then, the ground shook! A large piece of stone rolled on the floor and revealed a hidden passageway. “… The door was just a distraction, the real path was the floor!” |

Ankh-Morpork Pseudopolis Yard While Nanami followed the authorities, Dyne was pondering on what his next step should be. He needed to stock up on food and herbs, and that woman offered to buy healing herbs from him, which he would have gladly gone with... Had they not been interrupted almost immediately. Now, he was in a quandary. Did he follow the woman like a peddler of useless goods and wait to make a deal so he actually had a little money on him? Or did he simply go and try to find some place where he could eat? Nanami's off-hand comments, however, interested him. While it was unlikely that she was involved the trail which he had followed, perhaps she could at least know something about it. ... And boy was he glad he followed the woman. Standing outside the door and using a slight breeze to amplify the sound that struck the door, he was able to clearly overhear the conversation between the important people inside, and Nanami's comments brought him up short. He almost sighed in resignation. So it WAS a witch. Dyne had followed a trail of destroyed cities for a few months now, irregularly traveling and walking off the beaten path, finding the various places of destruction. He had seen the destroyed towns, he had seen the utter desecration of any sort of morality or ideal that happened there. It was cruelty beyond any that he's ever seen. And he wanted to find the problem, and cut excise it from the world. However, he had been unable to do anything but follow the trail and ease the spirits left behind. In a place as desecrated as that, nature refused to grow and the spirits of the dead still haunted the sites of sacrifice. He had been there to put these spirits at ease and let nature take its hold. He had been there to cleanse and bring magic back into order. And he had done it enough times by now that he was growing very irritated at the cause. To think that it was a witch and that this Nanami person was hunting her... |

[Camelot Castle Gate] “Agreed.” Gawain said, and he reached into his bag and retrieved a small bag of gold coins as well as a silver key. He handed both to Sai. “This is the key to his home, a small cottage down in the southern part of the city. As for enemies, he had several. He was a Knight of the Round, anyone who would look upon Avalon with disdain was his enemy.” He paused. “Though… I recall… just before he disappeared, he had a run in with some odd cultists. He slew four of them, but one escaped. Though I find it unlikely that a Knight of Cyrus’ caliber could be endangered by them…” [Camelot Castle] “We are kidnapping no one!” Cid said, frowning. “This Princess has asked to come here, and has been denied by someone who might be corrupted by darkness! It is certainly our role to defy the evils of this world!” Cid shook his head. “Now, come! There is a covered wagon out back, waiting for us. Your Highness, we take our leave! God willing we shall return successful!” He gave a bow, and then headed out. |

Camelot Castle Gates Sai blinked. Did he really... This this man just REALLY say that? That was... Possibly the biggest disappointment Sai had all day. Though maybe this man didn't know exactly what dark, corrupt powers were capable of, to simply brush aside a cult was lunacy. Or incompetence. And neither spoke well of Sai's current conversation partner. Nonetheless, Sai was a mercenary. And as a mercenary, he often helped his employers in more ways than just the mission, just so he could get continued payments and patronage from them. A bag of gold was one thing, but a continued gold flow was another. So he simply signed, turned sideways and looked back into the city of Avalon. "... Let me tell you a story. It's short. Sweet. A man of honor and glory was one day accosted by a cult, and slew them down to the last three, and let them go to spread word that their evil would not be allowed to spread. That was the biggest mistake that man ever made. The cultists did return, but for his head, and one said cultist became an abomination, a demonic entity crossed with his own human flesh and mind, an embodiment of dark and corrupt power. The man of honor and glory stood no chance as he was simply brushed aside and then ripped apart." He turned to look right back at Gawain. "Never, underestimate the lengths to which a human can fall. Never underestimate, no matter how weak the enemy looks. And never, EVER underestimate the power of the darkest of magics. I know them. I know their power. And I can tell you this right here, right now. If this knight of yours was captured by a cult and dark magic is involved..." He turned about and started walking towards where he was pointed to. "... Prepare to never see your friend again." |

[Camelot Castle Gates] Now Gawain’s rather calm and friendly demeanor changed. His eyes narrowed and he actually looked angry, and he stepped forward so that he blocked Sai’s path. “Hold on! I cannot allow you to speak such words without correcting you, for you know not of what you speak. The Knights of the Round are no ordinary men, and Cyrus is among the greatest of us! If you believe that one of the Knights of Avalon could fall before a demonic entity than you are a fool, sir.” Gawain shook his head. “You tell me not to underestimate the darkest of magics, but I tell you this; do not underestimate the heart of a man who pledges himself to defense of his nation and to the glory of God. For I know it, and I know the power that can be called upon. I tell you this; Cyrus will not die at the hands of dark magic.” [Covered Wagon] The wagon took the two away from Avalon, and soon it joined a larger convoy. Among them was Tantalus, who were on their way across the nations of men and to Alexandria. Soon enough, Cid shook his head. “I must meet with Baku, the leader of the group. You should mingle with the others.” |

Camelot Castle Gates Sai stopped, watching Gawain dispassionately as the man waxed indignant about not underestimating the light and the good, and that there was just no way that Cyrus could have fallen to an evil hand. He just continued watching, just listening quietly. And then, when Gawain was done and angrily glaring at him, Sai gave a small sigh. "... Are you done yet?" This rhetorical question was spoken quietly, without any sort of threat or anything potentially negative about it. Just a quiet question. After which, he remained quiet for a few moments before continuing just as quietly, his silver-colored eyes glinting like cold steel. "I am under no illusion to make me think that I should underestimate anything. Some of the most powerful people I knew were warriors for a just cause, for the right and the good. Others, undefeatable monsters that hide within our society, are evil... And just as powerful. I do not underestimate. If I ever did, I would be dead." He shrugged. "But I'm not here to convince you, because you will not listen to a stranger. I'll just tell you one fact: Your friend is missing. That means one of two things. Option one, he found out something and had to act quickly, so quickly or silently in fact, he did not inform any of you fellow knights or the king to whom he is sworn. Option two, he is somehow prevented from contacting you, be it capture, death, loss, or some other means. In that case, that means whatever the case has been, he had been bested. And if he was bested, then your vehement denials mean nothing." After he was done, he simply looked over Gawain's shoulder. "As for the moment, I would prefer to do this job honestly and earn the money you just paid me. I'm here to find out what happened to your knight buddy, and that's what I will do." |

[Covered Wagon] The caravan travelled for several uneventful hours until they came to a covered bridge, which spanned a deep river. As the caravan arrived, they found the bridge was out, prompting Baku and Cid to meet by the broken bridge. “… The water is too deep to wade through. Baku, you know these roads… where is the nearest crossing?” Cid asked. Baku shrugged. “We can go down about three days journey to the left and the river ends, or half a day to the right and there’s a small village where we can cross.” Cid raised an eyebrow. “We don’t have three days to waste.” Baku shrugged. “Your call, chief, but I doubt you Paladins will be welcome in the village.” Cid shrugged. “We won’t be staying, just passing through.” [Camelot Castle Gates] “You’re right, I won’t listen if you if you’re going to try to tell me that the evils of our world can even hold a candle against that which is good and pure. Still, I ask you to find Cyrus.” Gawain pointed the way towards Cyrus’ cottage. |

Covered wagon What manner of village in Avalon would we not be welcome in? Even IF all my suspicioins and fears are true, I imagine that we're still fairly welcome here...or have we gone further than I thought...? Still, Didymus chuckled. "We don't have time to waste indeed. As long as I wear my overcloak, I doubt I will attract too much attention...as for being unwelcome...I imagine it'll be no worse than an elvish camp or the wilderness tracking a changeling..." he said. |

[Covered Wagon] As the caravan continued on, Cid walked by the side and he seemed anxious. The bridge being broken could just be a coincidence, but when they were on a mission of this importance he doubted it. “Baku? What is this village? I don’t recall any settlement existing this far out, and I’ve never heard of a place in Avalon where a Paladin is resented.” Cid asked. “That’s cause you never heard of this place.” Baku responded. “Thievery ain’t too well tolerated in Avalon… so thieves tend to set up makeshift bazaar’s that can move from place ta place here, instead of settling down with a Guild like they would in some other places.” Cid stopped. “You’re taking us to a thieves’ bazaar? I’m a Knight as well as a Paladin, Baku! I have sworn an oath to uphold the law.” Baku looked over to him. “Aye, ya did. That’s why I hoped to not take this road… but we’re out of options. And my boys won’t be backing you up if you start arrestin’ people. So which is more important? Busting a few thieves, or getting this Princess?” Cid just fell silent. |

Covered wagon Didymus sighed. It was dilemmas like this that ticked him off, really. "...we can't actually PROVE that they've stolen anything, can we? As far as we can PROVE, this is just a shantytown, right?" he said. "As long as we pass through and don't make trouble, I imagine that TECHNICALLY and LEGALLY, we won't be able to or have cause to arrest anyone. Hopefully...in which case we will be well within our duties as men of faith and order. Who knows, maybe seeing a couple Paladins, if we're recognizable as such, will get them to think twice about how close they came to being caught or something..." |

I can't see what you're imagining
|
-Ankh-Morpork- Pseudopolis Yard “The city has burned many times in the past,” Vimes said, after a moment, “Not in the recent past, mind you.” He sighed, leaning back in his seat, “Alright then, do you have any leads? Anything to look for?” “Perhaps we should inquire with the wizards,” Vetinari suggested. Vimes liked the wizards at Unseen University. They might be using the arcane arts to peer into other places and dabble with strange incantations, but they didn't tend to break any law that Vimes was concerned with, and they had allowed the use of their main hall for Vimes' wedding to Lady Sybil. “Alright then. Nomura, right? Let's go talk to the wizards,” Vimes said, stalking forward and leaving his paper work behind, “Carrot, I'm following a lead! You're in charge here.” “Sir!” Carrot said, saluting, “Should I let Lady Sybil no?” “What do you think, Captain?” Vimes asked, giving the human raised as a dwarf a Look. “I think she should be informed, sir,” Carrot answered, truthful as always, “But I suspect you'd rather I didn't.” “Precisely,” Vimes said, then headed out of the Yard, going towards Unseen University... Blake looked towards Dyne as Vimes headed out, Nanami presumably following. “...Do you know of this witch?” Blake asked, “You seem agitated...” Streets “If she's half the inventor I think she is, I bet she'll want to come along,” Hammah grinned towards Kasumi, “Am I right?” Meanwhile, Jimi turned to Kxs, smirking, “Looks like Hammah made a couple friends...About time, I was getting a little worried about him...” Outside the Thieves' Guild, Cess pulled out a small blue gem, staring at it. Getting to Star Maiden Mountains was a difficult task. Well, that wasn't entirely true. Getting to them was relatively simple. Scaling them was another thing. But with this, it would bring him to where he needed to go. He brought it to his lips and whispered something, unheard, and disappeared in a flash of light. Unseen University “So what is this all about, Stibbons?” Archchancellor Ridcully asked, casually arming a crossbow and then firing it across the hall, where it missed the intended target and instead pinned another wizard's hat to the wall. “Well, uh, sir, there's a flux of magic in the city...” Stibbons, the only wizard at the University who actually did the paper work, said. “And? We get new chaps coming here all the time! People, and etc, flock here all the time. Bound to be some magic users among them,” Ridcully said, once more arming his crossbow. “No, sir, it's worse then usual, it might be...dark magic, sir...” The crossbow bolt found it's target, which was less of a target and more of the Bursar, who was currently hallucinating that he was a hummingbird instead of the rest of the staff's preferred hallucination of being a Bursar. The crossbow bolt pinned the robes, and thus the wizard, to the wall. “Damn buzzing was getting on my nerves,” Ridcully frowned, then turned back to Stibbons, “Dark magic, you say? Can't have any of that! We run a clean university here!” “Glad to hear it.” Ridcully looked up, Vimes simply striding in, lighting a cheap cigar and taking a pull, “I have someone here you need to talk to... The Library At the library, Ben looked towards an orangutang. It was The Librarian, a wizard who had been turned into an orangutang a long time ago, to the point no one remembered how, why, or even who. The Librarian had also denied all attempts to change back. At this point though, he was simply a facet of the University. Had someone gone to the wizards and told them that there was an orangutang in the library, they would go to The Librarian and ask if he saw it. “Ook,” The Librarian said to Ben, who paused, then shook his head. “No, I think it's more Wutai then Xing...” Ben said, “That's where we found it, anyways.” “Ook?” “No, no, I've seen that book, nothing in there...” Jade just stood off to the side, eyebrow raised as Ben talked to The Librarian. -Star Maiden Mountains- Cess appeared in a flash of light, blinking as he stood by Shimera, her sister, and his son, Riza. “Augh, never really use to that...” Cess muttered, the gem in his hands turning into dust, before simply blowing away. He grinned, turning to Shimera and pulling her into a big hug, giving her a kiss, then scooped up Riza. “Sorry I'm a little late, I was finishing some Guild business...Now we can head to Ankh-Morpork,” Cess said, “We'll have to go the long way though, but it should be fine.” The gem Cess used took a lot of power, but the Star Matron had given it to him and Shimera for the one time use. -Vale Ruins- “Oh man...I wonder what's down there...” Garet said, investigating the hole. He peered forward, trying to get a closer look. Then promptly slipped, falling through! “Ahhhhhh!” |

[Ankh Morpork] [Unseen University] Nanami naturally followed Vimes. She had been to the Unseen University before, on a previous visit to Ankh-Morpork. She had studied some of the magic tomes here in the past, to advance her studies, but most of her training came from her mentors. “My name is Nanami. I am following a most evil witch called Maghda, who I believe has come to Ankh-Morpork. In every city she has visited in the past, she has made ritualistic sacrifices, and then the city has burned. I fear her plan is the same here.” Nanami explained the situation, and then looked to Ridcully. “She is not alone. I believe she is working in tandem with a cult of some sort. It is imperative that she be found before she can unleash her horrors here.” [The Library] “Did somebody mention Wutai?” A young man with dark, spiky hair and unusual red eyes popped his head around the corner, having overheard Ben speaking with the Librarian. It was clear from his appearance that he was Wutainese, and he stepped forward. “Sorry to eavesdrop, but if you’ve got some question about Wutai, I can probably help.” [Vale Ruins] “Garet!” Felix gasped as his friend took a tumble right into the ruins. He immediately jumped in after him, though he was smart enough to use his psynergy to create a platform from the stone wall that moved down, allowing him to ride in safety. At the bottom of the drop, was a large room. The floor was hewn from some blue stone, and there were great columns that supported the roof. There was a pool of water that encircled the room, and at the far end was a door shaped like the sun. “Garet! Are you okay?” Felix called out. [Covered Wagon] Cid was clearly not comfortable with the idea of passing through a thieves’ den – in fact he was outraged that such a place could even operate in Avalon – but he nodded in agreement. “Our quest takes priority.” Cid agreed. The company moved on, and in a short time they came to the makeshift city on the river. Immediately, two of the thieves from inside stepped out, and they seemed afraid of the arriving wagon convoy until they saw the group inside. “Ah… you’re not… okay, good.” One of the thieves sighed in relief. Cid raised an eyebrow as he stepped forward, and the other thief gasped. “You! I know you… you’re a Knight! I’ve seen you before…” Cid sighed, but decided not to hide it. “I am Cidolfus Orlandeu, a Paladin of the Order, and Knight of the Round.” The thief paused for a moment – and then jumped forward, hugging Cid’s legs. “Oh thank God! We’ve been saved!” Now Cid was just confused. So was Baku. |
