[Ankh-Morpork]

Nanami simply nodded in response to Vimes. The man was respectable, and she had seen what he was capable of. Nanami was never one to be intimidated around the powerful, or even around world leaders like the Patrician.

She had no idea that Jimi and Hammah did not share her irrational coolness in any situation and were uncomfortable here.

“Vimes, the Dark Brotherhood base may be cleared out, but there's bound to be more of them around the city.”

[Cottage]

The old man frowned as Galv delivered that news.

“... I see. I had never imagined a monster living so close to us... I wonder if it has anything to do with that man?”

His wife emerged from the next room. “I told you I had a bad feeling about him!”

The old man nodded. “Yes, yes... I should have listened.” He turned towards Galv. “A few weeks ago, we had a very strange man pass through here. There was something odd about him... my wife believed he had a 'evil aura', but I don't know much about such things...”

Three guesses who he was.

[The Galantine]

Cid listened to the story in utter silence. His face never once betrayed a hint of emotion, even when Blake dropped the bombshell.

The elder man took a deep sigh and leaned against the side of the ship. He crossed his arms and tried to reflect on this. This was unexpected news.

“... Then the Dark Lord still lives. That is distressing news... and perhaps the ultimate confirmation of the true stakes of our mission.” Cid shook his head, mostly thinking aloud.

He turned around and looked at Blake, his face still stern.

“It goes without saying that we need to speak.”

Vimes nodded, “Of course. I wouldn't trust we got all of them even if a god came down and told me we did.”

He finished his cigar, tossing it on the cobblestones and putting it out under his heel.

Soon the four would find themselves at the Patrician's Palace, Vetinari's assistant, Drumknott, letting them inside.

After a couple minutes of a waiting room, where a clock that didn't quite tick-tock right, the door was opened and the four were let into the Oblong Office.

“Ahhh...Good, you're here,” Vetinari said, shuffling some papers and looking up at them, “Commander?”

Vimes nodded gruffly, then gave a report of what had happened and what they know knew.

“I see. Good job, Commander. The Watch will be recognized for their heroic efforts in defending the city. Am I correct in assuming you need a new dartboard?” Vetinari asked.

“Yes sir. Nobby pinched the last one,” Vimes said, “No one wanted to use it once we got it back.”

“Fair enough,” Vetinari said, not wishing to know the details, “Anything else?”

“Yes sir,” Vimes said, “We need more men. I want to increase the City Watch by at least fifty.”

“Fifty? That's a lot of money, Vimes. Why?”

“Sir, we just crippled a very dangerous organization. That's going to make them more desperate and more likely to try something again. We got lucky earlier against that dragon, the witch, and the Brotherhood. We need more men to keep the streets,” Vimes argued.

Vetinari sighed, “I suppose you might be right. We'll discuss this more later. Now then...Ms...Nomura?”

Vetinari turned his attention to Nanami now, “What is it you want?”

-Cottage-

Galv frowned, pretty sure he knew who they were talking about.

“Was he tall? Dark hair, dark glasses, pale skin?” Galv wondered, “Was he accompanied by anyone?”

Kyran paused, smiling a little and tugging on Musashi's arm.

“Since it's safe let's walk through the woods a bit now,” Kyran said, “I don't get to see nature and all that very often while in Ankh-Morpork, so I want to now while we have the chance!”

-The Galantine-

“I understand,” Blake nodded to Cid, “I will answer any questions you have, wherever you wish, with whoever you want present.”

He paused for a moment.

“But I will add, I do not know for certain if my grandfather lives. I...have a feeling he is, but I have never met him before...”

At least not that he could recall.

[Ankh-Morpork]

Nanami looked to Vetinari and she simply crossed her arms. If she was at all nervous about speaking to Ankh-Morpork’s ruler, it did not show on her face.

“Ankh-Morpork is clearly a target for whatever the Dark Brotherhood is planning. I need access to all of the information the Watch gathers on them while raiding their base, and any other information you have on them.”

[Cottage]

The old man nodded.

“Yes… that sounds like him. I don’t recall seeing anyone with him.” He explained with a frown. “He was an odd man… and I remember hearing him speak in a language that I’d never heard before. It sent a shiver down my spine.”

Musashi smiled to Kyran and nodded.

“Okay! I’d like that.”

Musashi and Kyran alone in the woods? Oh yeah, Elysia’s gonna loooooooove this.

[The Galantine]

Cid let out a sigh. This was bad. They were on an important quest, one predicted by the founder of the Order – and they had brought along the grandson of the Dark Lord himself!

Of course, Cid would not judge the boy based on what his grandfather had done… but it seemed odd. Perhaps it was all some cruel irony.

“I’m afraid I have many questions. To start with –”

“Oh, don’t even bother old man.”

Cid gasped and turned around. In the doorway of the cabin stood a tall, pale man with dark hair and dark glasses. As always, Rica had a sadistic smirk spread on his face.

“… Impossible…” Cid whispered. “You could not board this vessel undetected!”

“I didn’t.” Rica shrugged. “I wouldn’t want to board your crummy boat anyway… but I have a unique control over the seas. This is just an image, sent to give you a message.”

“I have no interest in anything you would say to us.” Cid growled.

Rica shrugged. “You Paladins… always with the self righteous horsesh-t. I get tired of it. Abandon your quest for the tomb of the Great Knight… or find yourselves in a watery grave.”

“We will not fear you!” Cid declared, and a light seemed to shine from his body. “Begone, foul one! Away from this ship!”

Rica shrugged once more. “Oh well. I’ll just have to release it, then… toodles.”

Suddenly, Rica’s body transformed into water, which splashed harmlessly on the deck. It had not been the true Rica, only a clone created from water.

Then there was a fierce wave, battering against the side of the ship. Something was displacing a lot of water. Then came the screams from the crew out on deck, and Cid hurried to rush out onto the deck. Garnet followed, and she screamed at the sight.

“Certainly,” Vetenari said to Nanami. Vimes raised an eyebrow. He had given in rather quickly...

“Ankh-Morpork is more then happy to aid a Dragonborn,” Vetenari added, “Drumknott, prepare the files we have on the Dark Brotherhood. Have Lord Downey paged as well and prepare whatever they have. Vimes, how long should it take for you to compile the information?”

“I'll have someone on it and a report ready before the night shift starts,” Vimes answered.

“Good, good,” Vetenari said, returning his attention to Nanami, “I can tell a storm is coming. I won't sit idly by if it can be averted. Some may think they can profit from such dark times. Personally, I prefer to keep things in the light.”

Which helps explain why the Thieves' and Assassins' Guild are out in the open here in Ankh-Morpork.

-Cottage-

Galv cursed, shaking his head as he turned around. “Damn... He really is starting to make a move... I thought he was still too weak... Guess I was wrong...”

Galv sighed, walking over towards Melanie, “This is bad...”

-Forest-

Kyran smiled, taking Musashi's hand and heading out into the woods a bit.

After a couple minutes, Kyran turned towards him, still smiling at him, “Okay then! It's just us out here right now...”

She paused, then moved forward, picking herself up and kissing him.

Kissing a boy she barely met out in some strange location? Well...she is Kanna's granddaughter...

-The Galantine-

Blake froze when his grandfather seemed to appear, and told them to abandon their quest.

He vanished, and Blake ran outside, gasping as he saw the creature.

“Oh no...” Blake muttered softly, “That's not good...”

Blake focused, his shadows swirling around him. “How do we fight that thing?”

[Ankh-Morpork]

Nanami was pleased to see that Veternari was on board with her request. She nodded to him, and simply crossed her arms and leaned against a nearby table.

“I prefer to simply dispatch those that try to profit from times such as these. I’m glad to see that you’re on board.” Nanami said simply. “I’m sure the Dark Brotherhood has other bases in the city, we’ll need to search for them.”

[Forest]

Musashi blinked as suddenly Kyran kissed him. He grinned into the kiss and quickly slipped his arms around her, pulling her close. Musashi didn’t know if it was really a good idea to make out in the middle of a mysterious forest, but he also didn’t care.

[The Galantine]

Garnet stumbled back, wide eyed with terror. “That… it is enormous! It could sink the ship with a single blow!”

“How do we fight that thing?”

Cid rushed forward and threw back his heavy brown cloak as he drew his sword.

“The same way we fight anything else! With honor, bravery and faith! … That said, this could get nasty quick.” He added with a frown.

“Get the cannons ready! We fight or we die, and I have no plans to die today!” Cid called.

“I already have Captain Carrot sending more teams out, and investigating the base that we now know of for more information,” Vimes said, after a brief eyebrow raise from Vetenari.

“Good, good,” Vetenari said, then turned his attention back to Nanami, “Do you plan on staying in the city or following other leads?”

-Forest-

Kyran kissed Musashi back in the forest, quite enjoying herself, before pulling back after a little bit, staring up at him.

Kyran got her red hair from her father, but she also got his recklessness, which when combined with Kanna genes, could be a bad combination.

“I really like you Musashi...” Kyran said after a moment, pausing to think a moment, “We should get married!”

See?

-The Galantine-

Blake frowned, looking up at the creature. Maybe...

“I'll see what I can do,” Blake said. He disappeared suddenly, turning into a cloud of shadows, shooting upwards towards the creature's head!

[Ankh-Morpork]

Nanami shook her head.

“I can’t stay. The Dark Brotherhood is not the masterminds behind what has been going on. The cult I’ve investigated is just a small fry… something bigger is happening and I need to find out what it is.”

She sighed, leaning against the wall.

[Forest]

Musashi blinked when Kyran suddenly suggested that they get married. Given that he was a Prince with a death curse on his head, he had an obligation to his line to have an heir before he died… which if he didn’t find the man who cursed him, would be less than a year.

“… We should!” Musashi said with a grin.

The Kraken’s hear was burning with blue flames, and as Blake shot towards it, the creature’s eyes flashed and it blasted a massive burst of flames at Blake!

Didymus was quiet, as often, as the discussion surged. When the monster appeared, he was still quiet, his head bowed a bit, but when he looked up again his visage became even more earnest.

"Or Order, at any rate in its olden days, was renowned for, by His grace, vanquishing beasts such as this." he said. "His will be done." his sword was drawn, his own cloak off.

"With that said, a strike at its head could be what is necessary..." he said. "...though perhaps some protection for our boat as well..."

He thrust his sword into the deck, and knelt in prayer...

[Ankh-Morpork Streets]

A tall man in a fancy-looking jacket and wearing a fancy-looking hat wasn't really out of place in Ankh-Morpork. The city had its own share of weirdos and strange events, especially with the latest revelation that dragons were real and so were the Dark Brotherhood and their ilk. So a stranger walking down the main street towards the Patrician's Palace wasn't a strange thing to see, really, all things considered.

Even if the man stood out a little with his clean and curiously decorative clothing, combining function, form and fashion in a single whole.

He passed by the guards fearing no reprisal. In a city where the guild of thieves and assassins operated in broad daylight, and where thieves and assassins could walk the streets without any problems or being stpped by the watch, it was relatively easy for one such as him to remain completely unnoticed, even when walking out in plain sight.

He pondered on his own relationship with the watch as he absent-mindedly walked along the wall of the patrician's palace, a cigarette of some sort lighting up underneath the wide brim of that hat of his. The watch had tried many times to catch him, to make sure he never escaped, but they never could actually get him, no matter how hard they tried. He was elusive, and Vimes probably had quite a few choice words to speak about him. Unfortunately for the City Watch, the laws were quite clear when it came to capture: If caught in the act or tipped properly, they were allowed to try and arrest the person. But without proof, there were no arrests, otherwise the guild of thieves and assassins would not exist, even if they were sanctioned by the Patrician.

So in the end, this was his victory.

Still...

He flipped the object in his hand once more, looking at the strange rod that he had recently "found" in a place underground that he did not think existed. It was a strange one, a rod shaped like a twisted bone with black vines crossing over the bleached white, leading up to a pitch-black gem half the size of his fist. A black diamond, of all things, and one of the largest he had ever seen in his life. So what sort of thief would he be if he had not taken something that looked as expensive as this?

Now, if only he knew what it was for and what it WAS, maybe he would have a better time understanding how much it was really worth. And what sort of people would want it.

He frowned as he continued to walk, his whistle dying away as he remembered that Vimes was nowhere to be seen. Usually, his unofficial nemesis would have been there at the scene of the crime as the very first one, following his instincts and trying to catch him. But no, this time Vimes was completely absent from the manse which was his target, and it was getting on his nerves.

Come now, was it so hard to want to actually have a challenge in getting away? Vimes was like a bloodhound, sniffing out every possible corner and manipulating the guard with such tactical genius... It was impossible for normal thieves to get away, and it served as a good course of training and self-improvement for this here thief.

... He admitted it. Robbing an empty mansion was much more boring without Vimes breathing down his neck.

Now, if only the man in the fashionable coat and hat could find Vimes to rib him... Maybe that would bring up the spirits in the city...

“I see then,” Vetenari said, “I wish you luck, and if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask. I'm sure I can get Drumknott to get what you need.”

Vimes was frowning. Vetenari seemed entirely too helpful, and was waiting to see if the other foot would drop.

-Ankh-Morpork Streets-

There was a young man following the thief in the fancy jacket. He would know this, as the young man worked with him on several occasions.

He was tall and somewhat lanky in appearance, and gave off the impression he didn't exactly touch the ground. His hair was shaggy and blond, with bright green eyes and pale skin, dressed in relatively nondescript clothes.

His name was Riza, and he moved up towards the other man, the crowd around them providing more then enough cover. Ankh-Morpork was an active city, and even a dragon attack would not deter most folks.

“So tell me again why we're going to the Palace?” Riza asked.

-The Galantine-

Blake turned in the air, barely avoiding the flames as they passed by him, the heat forcing him out of his shadow form. He fell a bit, before he made a circle of shadows under him, which he landed on and then floated on.

Aerial battles was not his forte, and while he commanded an impressive source of power, he could not always call upon it properly.

For now he focused, trying to keep the beast busy, sending shadows flying from him, trying to attack the creature's head!

-Forest-

Kyran smiled, “That's great! Maybe we can find someplace when we get to Avalon...”

She really wasn't all that much older when her parents got married, which is one reason she didn't think this was too odd. Though, her parents had known the other for considerably longer.

“Though we'll still need to find that person who cursed you!” Kyran said, a determined look on her face. She wasn't planning on taking after her grandmother after all.

Said thief in the jacket and hat didn't answer immediately, ponderously spinning the rod with the large diamond in his right hand, flipping it over his hand a few times, just watching the lights play off of the black diamond as he continued to spin it, letting its muted colors fascinate him for a moment. Then, he looked up at the palace, finally getting the rod into a solid grip and pointed it at the stone structure, as if aiming.

THEN, he finally answered.

"Well, first off, I want to know what this thing is. And the first point of order of finding out what it is would be to hit the archives in the palace, since they're usually the most thorough. I want to know how much this thing is truly worth, and what it can do before I try to fence it off at the local black market."

He turned to Riza, flipping him the rod.

"Don't hold that thing for too long, it's downright teeming with dark energy. But that's only my first reason. Second, I want to find Vimes and bug him a bit. He's usually knowledgeable about recent events, and I missed the entire dragon attack by falling into the catacombs and finding this. But at the same time, Vimes is the sort of character that doesn't like to be taken off-guard, so I'm taking extra precautions."

As he said that, he pulled a fancy-looking, heavily inscribed card from one of the boxes on his waist, a pitch-black background with gold, silver, purple, red and blue designs all over the front, all culminating in a multi-colored image of a rippling mirror on a decorated stand with a staircase leading up to it. As he walked along the palace wall, he placed the card on one of the stones he passed and let a bit of his power run through it, making the runes around the edges of the card glow faintly, and the card sunk into the stone, disappearing from sight.

"Third, Riza, if you haven't noticed it yet... We're being shadowed by some rather interesting folk. The sort of folk that wear dark cloaks, and perhaps want to retrieve something I carry so openly. And fourth... Well, to be honest, I'm just looking for trouble."

And with a grin, he continued on his way while pulling a cigarette out of his coat and lighting it up, puffing out smoke as he headed in the direction of the entry gates along the palace wall...

"Third, Riza, if you haven't noticed it yet... We're being shadowed by some rather interesting folk. The sort of folk that wear dark cloaks, and perhaps want to retrieve something I carry so openly. And fourth... Well, to be honest, I'm just looking for trouble."

It was true. There were quite a few of them. One was roughly twenty feet behind Vaun and Riza, leaning against a lamp post with his arms crossed. He did not appear to be paying attention to them at all, but he had been following them for quite some time now.

Another was across the street, behind a row of garbage cans. A third was on a nearby rooftop just in front of them, watching. All of them were dressed in black, with daggers hanging from their belts and dark glances in Vaun’s direction.

“Right then…”

Suddenly, another of the men in the dark cloaks stepped out from an alleyway, directly in front of Vaun and Riza.

“Let’s not make this anymore complicated than it has to be.” The man said in a gruff voice.

[Vetenari’s Office]

Nanami simply nodded. She didn’t know what Vetenari’s agenda was and she did not much care. She had an important quest to attend to, and it would take time… the one thing she did not have.

“If there’s nothing else…” Nanami said, and she turned to leave.

[The Galantine]

The shadows flew up, pelting the Kraken in the face. The monstrous creature roared, but it seemed more annoyed than in pain. The blue flames burnt around the savage monster’s head, they rose up to block additional shadows from reaching it.

The waves were getting worse, but the boat seemed to stay calm on the seas as it shimmered with a white light. Cid nodded to Didymus, and then stepped forward and jumped up onto the railing on the side of the ship.

“To fight such a beast… to slay a creature in service of the Dark Lord himself… they shall sing songs about this battle someday! Let us insure they sing of the triumph of good over evil!” Cid called to the crew, and he raised his sword.

He gripped the sword’s handle with both hands and held it firm in front of him. He closed his eyes, and his lips moved slightly as if he was speaking. Then there was a great flash of light and a crackle like thunder and the entire sky was illuminated for a moment.

The Kraken roared out, clenching its eyes shut and the flames died down around its head. The shadows pelted it again, and several of the crewmen on the deck fired bows at the beast, the arrows embedding along its massive body.

[Forest]

Musashi nodded to Kyran. She had a very good point… the person who had cursed him was still out there.

“That’s easier said than done… but with you helping me, I think maybe we can find him… or her.” Musashi said with a smile.

Vaun wasn't surprised by the sudden call at all. It was obvious that this artifact would bring about attention, since it was full of dark magic of some kind that seemed to SING to his own magics. No, he was expecting the confrontation. However, that didn't mean that he wasn't surprised by the audacity of the encounter, the men simply holding them up... Right next to the palace wall, just sixty or so feet away from the turn and view of the guards.

"So the stalkers decide to show themselves. I wonder why you all seem to be so interested in this little tinker-toy."

He balanced the rod carelessly on one finger, letting it stand up straight, just barely moving his hand to make sure the balance was correct.

"Now, you seem to be of the opinion that you are capable of making this difficult. I... Would have to agree. You can indeed make things very, very difficult. For yourselves, that is. The distance I have to run for the guard to actually see is minimal, and I doubt you want to bring the entire hornet's nest upon your necks, what with Vimes increasing the presence of the guard on the streets."

He looked over his shoulder at Riza, a shiny yellow eye poking from under the brim of the hat.

"Tell me, my friend. How quickly can the patrician AND Vimes, when they are in the same palace, mobilize a powerful force to repel a bunch of ragtag black-cloaked strangers who are hunting the innocent?"

His grin turned feral.

"I am betting... Somewhere in the area of a minute, maybe slightly more. Now, that's 60 seconds, and 60 seconds is a LOOOONG time within the world of heroics. What could you possibly think you could do to a group of cloaked men with knives within 60 seconds, Riza?"

The man in the black robes simply stood and watched Vaun. His thin black eyebrow rose over his tanned face. He listened to every word Vaun had to say without his expression ever changing. Despite their close proximity to the palace, he seemed absolutely calm and collected.

There was definitely something creepy about this man. From his expression to his actions it was clear that he was absolutely confident that he had the upper hand in everything that was happening.

“Sixty seconds is a long time, indeed. For myself, it is long enough to send an entire room full of people to their eternal slumber. Combined with my associates, and it’s more than enough time to end your life numerous times over.” The man finally spoke in a cold, but matter-of-fact tone to his voice.

Then, a horrible grin.

“… and if by some chance you do survive… then you would have the displeasure of meeting with the greatest assassin in the Brotherhood.”

-Ankh-Morpork-

City Streets

“I think they'd be amazed that there was an innocent person in Ankh-Morpork,” Riza said, after a moment, in response to Vaun's question, “Unless you're talking about Captain Carrot. Then they'd just have to sit back and let Carrot punch the person who was trying to accost him.”

Riza then smirked a little, moving back and forth on the balls of his feet, still giving off the incredibly odd impression that he wasn't actually on the ground.

“But that is the odd thing about the Watch nowadays. Ten years ago if someone screamed no one would come until the deed was done. Now? You get five Watchmen from all different directions conversing on the scene. Least, according to my dad,” Riza said idly, then fixed his attention on the man in front of him and Vaun, grinning.

“But if you do attack us, you'll really wish you didn't. And that's not a wish I'll be able to grant...” Riza added, magic beginning to glow around him slightly.

Patrician's Palace

“No, that is all,” Vetenari said, then turned back to Vimes, and started to discuss things with him.

Jimi and Hammah paused, glancing towards the other, then followed after Nanami. They didn't intend to be left alone in a room with the Patrician and Vimes.

-The Galantine-

Blake breathed deeply, moving back and looking at the creature. If only he could use his father's power, and call forth lightning on his beast...

But he couldn't, focusing on his shadows again. They launched outwards, hurtling at the beast, attempting to slice it!

-Forest-

“I bet we will!” Kyran said, “And I bet Elysia will help us too!”

Hahahaha, not likely.
