Didymus raised an eyebrow as Tyrael talked further, feeling the desire to press on asking for more information, or how he knew all this, or even his connection to Cid.

...sure, he had his guesses. But...he kept quiet, either way, still waiting...

Streets

“Having a troll with you can help as well,” Angua said, “People tend to me more open to discussion when they see Sergeant Detrius standing behind you.”

They headed towards the Yard, where Angua reported in to Vimes.

“Damn, my lead was a dead end too...Ambushed by some monsters,” Vimes frowned, “Place caught fire too.”

Angua frowned, glancing towards Nanami. This wasn't good, Vimes hadn't gotten a lead either.

“Alright, Detrius!” Vimes yelled, and Detrius appeared, rumbling slightly.

“Go with Angua and Nanami here,” Vimes ordered, “Back them up.”

Detrius saluted, turning towards Nanami.

“Nice to meet 'cha,” Detrius said.

Other Streets

“Yay!” Kyran smiled, moving forward and giving Musashi a quick kiss on the cheek, before taking his arm now.

“The Assassins Guild is this way,” she said, pulling him along now.

Museum

Elysia frowned, then turned, heading out of the museum. Now she had to track those two down...

-Sunderland-

Samuel paused, then nodded, “Good luck!”

He hurried off, pulling out his gauntlet of cold iron, slipping it on. He could almost feel the other source in the air, following the vegetation as it grew browner and deader, coming to a stop outside a graveyard.

“...Suitable...” Samuel frowned, stepping inside the graveyard, “I hope it's not buried in a random grave...”

-Outside Vale-

“Information?” Beast Boy wondered, thinking, “On what? Maybe I can help you!”

[Ankh-Morpork]

[Streets]

“Monsters and fire usually means Maghda.” Nanami said to Vimes. She was fuming by now. Maghda’s cult seemed to have an obsession with fire, using it to cover their tracks constantly. It made it virtually impossible to gather evidence on them.

When Detrius showed up, Nanami nodded, looking up at the troll.

“I’m afraid we meet under very dire circumstances. Maghda’s stepping up her usual time table… but something is different this time. She’s never summoned Butcher demons before… something about Ankh-Morpork…”

She frowned, and turned to Vimes. “I fear that Maghda’s endgame may be in this city. If so, I have no idea what horrors she may unleash.”

[Other Streets]

Musashi grinned as she kissed his cheek. He simply hummed happily as they walked down the road, but his mood turned slightly more serious as they reached the Assassin’s Guild.

“Hmm… I do wonder, why would they even agree to see us?” Musashi pondered.

[Sunderland]

“Are you looking for something?”

A man stepped out from behind one of the graves. He was tall, with long blonde hair and he wore glasses. There was something about the man that seemed… old. He spoke with an Avalonian accent, but Samuel might have detected a few hints of Norddish in his voice.

“This is private property of the Eizenbern Family.” He said simply. “You need to leave.”

[Outside Vale]

“You can’t.” Raven replied, shaking her head. She wasn’t trying to be rude, she simply doubted that Beast Boy knew anything about the Dark Lord… most people knew only the stories and the legend.

[Gondor]

“It was good to see you again, old friend. I still hope that someday we can stand shoulder to shoulder in battle, and perhaps I can see the true you.” Cid chuckled a bit.

“And it is my sincerest hope that the need for that will never arise.” Tyrael replied. “Godspeed, Cidolfus Orlandu. Your errand is a most important one, as are your companions. Guide them well, my friend.”

With those final cryptic words, Tyrael walked into the thick of the forest, and seemed to vanish entirely in a blinding light. Cid chuckled again, and he walked over to Didymus and Garnet.

“Hah! Come, back to the Cart, we must press on… but we can continue with happy hearts for now at least.”

Watch Yard

Vimes frowned, lighting a cigar by striking a match on Detrius. The rocky troll didn't seem to mind, or if he did, wasn't going to say anything to his Commander.

“I don't think we're in too much trouble, not yet,” Vimes said, “Vetenari hasn't been butting in that much...though then again it could be he's just staying out of the way so I can do my job.”

Vimes sighed, shaking his head, “Carrot went to talk to Molly?”

“Yes sir,” Angua nodded, “We've also talked with the Assassins' Guild, but it appeared to be an unrelated matter, to be dealt with later.”

Vimes nodded, “Understood. Doubt the Assassins would help someone like this Maghda. They're pompous, but they're not idiots. Most of the time.”

Assassins' Guild

“Oh, don't worry, they'll let us in!” Kyran said, as they approached the door to the Guild. Kyran knocked on the door, and someone opened a small slit, staring out at the girl.

“Who goes...oi, it's you. Look, it's getting late, we really don't need you touring our museum right now...” the gate keeper said.

“Oh, don't worry, I'm here with a friend!” Kyran said, then pulled Musashi into view, grinning, “He's a Prince! He was interested in joining the Guild, and I said I could take him here.”

“A prince?” the gatekeeper said, sounding intrigued. Several well to do people would send their sons and daughters to the Assassins' Guild. Not just to learn a trade, but several just for the academic portion of the Guild, which was considered a good class for those in high positions.

Plus it never hurt to have their children learn how assassins thought, when they would undoubtedly inherit or make enemies themselves later in life.

The gatekeeper turned, sending a message, then turned back to Kyran and Musashi.

“Prince of what?”

“Xing!”

More muffled discussion, and the door opened.

“Alright, alright, you two can come in. Lord Downey says he'd be happy to give a tour,” the gatekeeper said, letting them in, Kyran smiling brightly.

She might seem like an innocent dunce now and then, but Kyran was a lot more clever then people tended to give her credit for.

-Sunderland-

Samuel paused, looking at the man, frowning. He then shrugged, turning his frown into a grin.

“Is it? In my experience no one really owns anything. It's all rented, in the long run,” Samuel responded, “And I'm looking for the source of all this decay...I know it's around here somewhere. I just need to get it, and I'll be on my way. Believe me, it'll be in your best interest.”

-Outside Vale-

“Well how do you know that without asking me first?” Beast Boy asked, “Maybe I'm an expert in whatever you want to know!”

Very, very doubtful.

[Ankh-Morpork]

[???]

Three figures, stepped in darkness, were conversing. They spoke in hushed tones, all staring at a crystal orb in the middle of the table. The orb showed various places, and images, all across the city and all across the continent.

“A lot of people are poking around. And we’ve had problems in Alexandria… Princess Garnet is missing, gone off with some Paladins… and Raven is gone too.” Lucien LaChance explained.

“… That’s a problem. We can’t have the heir of Alexandria rallying her people to resist us. She’ll have to be killed, the Paladins as well. Contact the Thalmor, they’ll do it.” The figure in the middle commanded. “Capture Raven. I don’t want her harmed, there is still hope for her.”

“My Master,” The third figure was Maghda herself. “We almost ready. The sigils and runes are etched all across the city.”

“And what of the City Watch, and the Dragonborn?” The figure asked.

“They are small problems. We can slaughter them with ease.” Maghda replied.

“Can you? Hmm. The Dragonborn has survived despite your best attempts in the past, and the City Watch is not to be underestimated. Still… once we begin, they will be unable to stop us. Just keep them busy, Maghda, even if it means your life.”

“I will obey, my master.” Maghda bowed.

[Watch Yard]

Nanami sighed. They were no closer to actually finding Maghda, though they did find a few things out. She paced back and forth with her arms crossed in front of her.

“There’s something we’re missing. This isn’t Maghda’s usual M.O. Ankh-Morpork is too large to burn… there has to be another piece to this puzzle, and whatever it is, we need to find it soon.”

She paused. “Vimes, are there any Guilds or Groups in the city that specialize in both assassination AND dark rituals?”

[Assassin’s Guild]

Musashi sweatdropped. He didn’t want the Assassins to know that he was one of the Princes of Wutai.

But to his surprise, they were let in, Musashi leaned close to Kyran as they walked.

“Are you sure you know what you’re doing?”

[Sunderland]

The man stepped forward, still frowning.

“The Eizenberns would disagree. This land is theirs, and they can be quite persuasive… even to a man like you, Samuel.”

The blonde man shrugged his shoulders. “The source of the decay is in the crypt behind me. A piece of cold iron was buried there a long time ago. Hidden away forever… the Eizenberns don’t know it, or they wouldn’t have bought this land.”

The blonde man seemed to know way more than he shoulder.

“… Be careful, Samuel. There are some doors that should not be opened… some things better left unseen.”

[Gondor - Cart]

Once they were back in the cart, Cid sat in the corner and shut his eyes. He seemed a lot calmer now then he had been before.

Garnet, meanwhile, frowned and turned to Didymus.

“Can we talk? I have no preference on what, I simply cannot take the silence. I have too much time to think when it is silent, and my thoughts have proven grim lately.”

[Outside Vale]

Raven raised an eyebrow.

“Okay. What do you know of Skyrim?”

Skyrim was a name lost to history. It was the name of a nation of men that had long since faded into legend.

It was the original name of the Dark Lands.

When Cid closed his eyes and seemed calm, Didymus may have envied that calmness, at least a bit.

“Can we talk? I have no preference on what, I simply cannot take the silence. I have too much time to think when it is silent, and my thoughts have proven grim lately.”

"...I hate to say it, Lady Garnet, but...I really can't be much help in that regard. Grim are my own thoughts, often. Especially now."

He paused.

"I can't say that what we've seen...well, I think it was a good sign, but frankly, with all that goes on in this world, and all that I've seen before..."

He paused.

"...I apologize, perhaps I shouldn't speak of all that. Suffice to say, I am not sure I am the best man to allieviete feelings of grave nature...but I can try. So, shall I regale you of my adventures past? Recite a litany or two? Practice delivering the last sermon I wrote intended for troops at the front?"

He chuckled.

"...and I do mean all those sincerely. Though I must confess, many of my adventures are a tad...dark. Perhaps the litanies are best..."

He gave a weak smile.

Watch Yard

“No Guilds...” Vimes said, shaking his head, “But...well...There's The Dark Brotherhood. A group of assassins...creepy ones, and the ones who are legal wear black all the time.”

Angua frowned, “We know they have a group here in Ankh-Morpork, but we don't know where. We haven't been able to find them. Neither have the Assassins' Guild. It's about the only thing Mister Vimes and Downey agrees on, trying to stop them.”

The Assassins' Guild

“Of course!” Kyran smiled, nodding her head, then paused, “I don't know if you have a lot of money or not, but if you don't, pretend you do while we here, okay?”

Lord Downey then appeared, walking into the courtyard, smiling at Musashi and Kyran.

“Ahhh, hello!” Lord Downey said, then bowed to Musashi, “I understand you're interested in joining our illustrious Guild? And who is this?”

He turned to Kyran, politely curious.

“I'm Kyran Hawkins!” the red head smiled, “I'm his guide around Ankh-Morpork.”

“Hawkins...? Sounds familiar...” Downey said, rubbing his chin.

“My grandmother put a hit on my father when he married my mother,” Kyran supplied happily. “Thankfully she called it off after a couple days.”

“Ahhh yes, I think I recall that...” Downey nodded, “I was freshly graduated, almost took the job myself. Anyways, back to business.”

Downey returned his attention to Musashi, “And your name, young Prince?”

-Sunderland-

Samuel froze, staring at the man.

“...How do you know my name?” Samuel asked, frowning, “I don't think we've met before...”

Samuel did want to get the cold iron...but it's not like he couldn't afford to wait and ask some questions first.

Especially when a strange person knew his name.

-Outside Vale-

Beast Boy's face fell, frowning at the name.

“...I've heard of it, yah...My parents were there, when I was little...” Beast Boy answered quietly, “They were studying how the magic there was affecting the wildlife...”

[Outside Vale]

Raven was a bit surprised by what Beast Boy said. She hadn’t expected anyone to know about Skyrim… it had existed so long ago, and most of the Nords had been scattered, their history all but forgotten.

“You’ve actually been to the Dark Lands? I wouldn’t suggest it… what was once Skyrim is closer to hell now.”

Raven shook her head. “… Beast Boy, I can tell you this… the Dark Lord is not the true source of what happened during the Great War. The real source was never destroyed…”

[Sunderland]

The man adjusted his glasses.

“I’ve seen you before, although you might not have seen me.”

He smirked. “My name is Hoenheim Eizenbern… and I am older than you.*”

[size0]*= AGOI wasn’t around for me to ask Samuel’s age, but I am guessing Hoenheim is older because of backstory stuff.

[Gondor]

Garnet shook her head.

“I can understand how you can feel so gravely. I have experienced firsthand just what is out there. It wraps its hand around Alexandria and threatens all of my people.”

“Enough from both of you.” Cid spoke up, his eyes still closed. “We are in grim times, but they become worse still if we dwell on them. Look towards the future, for our redemption lies there.”

[Ankh-Morpork]

[Watch Yard]

Nanami paused for a moment.

“Dark Brotherhood? I’ve heard of them before, but I had no idea they were active in Ankh-Morpork… Yes, that could be the key to this all. We need to find them…”

[The Assassin’s Guild]

Musashi rubbed his neck.

“Well… my name is Musashi.” He introduced himself to Downey. He wasn’t sure about any of this, but Kyran seemed sure.

"I'm sorry to hear that..." Didymus said. "...but I'm afraid that Avalon has its problems, as well..."

“Enough from both of you. We are in grim times, but they become worse still if we dwell on them. Look towards the future, for our redemption lies there.”

"Elder..." Didymus started. "...well, yes, our redemption is in Christ and we must trust in Him and look toward amending in the future these present evils that beset us...I apologize...those evils have a way, perhaps, of gripping the mind from time to time that one, perhaps, must practice and mentally condition oneself to cast off..."

He paused.

"...and being one who has to regularly confront them, perhaps, means that they are brought to the forefront of one's thoughts all the more often..."

He chuckled a tad nervously.

Beast Boy rubbed his arm, trying hard not to think about certain memories.

“Yah...it wasn't the best of places...” Beast Boy said, then paused, looking to the girl.

“What are you talking about?” he asked, “I don't know much about what happened, just some serious evil dudes doing evil, some dragons and people shouting or something...”

-Sunderland-

Dun dun dunnnnn...

Samuel froze, frowning at Hoenheim.

“...You look older too,” Samuel then said, relaxing slightly and running his hand through his hair, “I have to say, at least I was lucky and I still look and feel like I'm in my early twenties.”

He paused, then sighed slightly. “I haven't met another immortal before...So is there a club? Meetings I've been missing out on?”

-Ankh-Morpork-

Watch Yard

“I think everyone's active in Ankh-Morpork nowadays,” Vimes said, tossing his cigar to the ground and stamping it out with the heel of his boot, “Problem is we've been looking for them, can't find them. If we could do an entire sweep of the city, probably, but there's too many places to hide, too many people, and the Patrician's a tyrant but even can't just order something like that.”

“If we could get a lead...just one thing to follow...” Angua said, frowning, “Then we could get them...”

Assassins' Guild

“Very well met Sir Musashi,” Lord Downey smiled, “Is it Sir? I've never been entirely sure of the proper way of addressing a prince. Haven't had a monarchy in Ankh-Morpork in a couple centuries.”

He waved his had idly, turning and leading Musashi and Kyran down a hall.

“So what makes you want to join our illustrious guild, Sir Musashi?” Downey continued, “Want to insure your spot on the throne, hmmm?”

He chuckled softly, indicating it was a joke...probably.

[Ankh-Morpork]

All around the city, small markings had been drawn on walls and on the ground. Usually the markings were covered up – posters were placed over them, straw was thrown on top of them… and even the one’s out in the open were hard to see.

All at once, suddenly, every marking burst into flames. The flames did not spread or burn where they had been etched… instead they sent beams of light into the skies above Ankh-Morpork. The beams connected in the air above the city, sparkling and burning!

[Watch Yard]

“If we could get a lead...just one thing to follow...” Angua said, frowning, “Then we could get them...”

Literally seconds after Angua spoke, Nanami suddenly felt a powerful presence. She looked up and saw beams of light splitting the skies, and a burning flame above Ankh-Morpork.

“… I think we have our lead,” Nanami growled. “Maghda is making her move! It is now or never, we either stop her or this city will burn!”

[Assassin’s Guild]

Musashi rubbed his neck as they followed Downey.

I’ve never been much for titles.” The boy admitted. “The truth is, I’m searching or someone. From what I hear, your Guild is very good at finding people and taking care of them.”

[Gondor]

“You are absolutely correct.” Cid replied to Didymus, and the older man sat up. For once, the jovial look was replaced with one of absolute contemplation.

“Evil is not easily conquered. Most people need only struggle against it in terms of their own life, the decisions they make and the actions they take… but for some of us, the war against evil is no metaphor. There are things in this world darker and more horrible than even you can imagine, Brother Didymus.”

He sighed and leaned back. “Standing against those terrible things is difficult. We do it because we know we must… but it makes our daily toils all the more taxing. However… it makes our victory all the better. Never lose heart, either of you…”

[Outside Vale]

Raven paused… and then groaned. Beast Boy’s understanding of what had happened was beyond basic.

“It was a lot more than that. The Dark Lord tried to enslave the continent. The bloodiest war in history was fought against him.” Raven shook her head. “You know what? Nevermind… you’re better off not knowing the details. The point is… I have some things I need to do in Ankh-Morpork. That’s all.”

[Sunderland]

Hoenheim had to laugh at Samuel’s reaction.

“Perhaps there would be a club, if there was more than just a handful of people like us.” Hoenheim chuckled. “… We should not be. People like you and I.”

Hoenheim looked over to one of the graves.

“… Tell me, what do you want the Cold Iron for?”

Didymus sighed as Cid spoke.

"Elder, I..."

He paused. The memories of his few years since his ordaining played through his mind. Brothers falling by the wayside or in battle. All manner of uncouth and evil things refusing to bend the knee to God and fighting so hard against not just the faith but the people themselves...and people themselves who fought so hard against the faith. The constant skirmishes with the elves, his own...questions or disagreements he had had long discussions with...

...but this wasn't a time for that. Not when Garnet was around, at least.

"...I know we must keep the faith, Elder." he said. His own heart was a tad heavy, perhaps, but he had to be strong.

-Ankh-Morpork-

Watch Yard

“Let's go!” Vimes ordered, then set off down the streets, heading for the source of the magic. He knew these streets well. With a thin pair of boots he could tell where he was just by the feel of the cobblestones.

Angua took after him, along with Carrot. Detrius rumbled forward, moving slower but with the inevitability of a glacier...

Assassins' Guild

“Ahhh, I see,” Lord Downey grinned, “Why don't you accompany me to my office then?”

Downey lead them up some stairs, into his office, motioning to some seats for them, before sitting behind his own desk, grinning at Musashi.

“So let's not beat around the bush. Who do you want...removed, sir?”

-Outside Vale-

Beast Boy's ears drooped a little, frowning and looking off to the side.

He frowned, then stood up straighter, marching forward and looking towards Raven.

“Just because I don't know much about what happened doesn't mean I can't help! Trust me, you'll be glad to have met me. I can do all sorts of cool stuff!” Beast Boy said.

-Sunderland-

“It's something to do,” Samuel answered, “I considered trying to collect stamps, but it just wasn't my thing.”

He was lying. He wanted the cold iron for something, but he certainly wasn't going to tell anyone.

“I hear it makes the wearer nigh invincible. Until it kills them at least. I'm unkillable,” Samuel then added, “I have to see how that works. Human compulsion to see what happens when we do something that should be impossible...”

“If everything is happening as it appears to be, then we are living in very important times.” Cid said, looking to Didymus. “That which is important is rarely fun… but I count myself grateful that I lived long enough to see these times, and Lord willing I shall live through them.”

Garnet paused. “Sir Orlandu, you seem… positive. Yet I fear that Sir Didymus is closer to the truth… if my dreams and experiences are any indication, then the darkness in the Dark Lands is once again stirring. That could very well mean the downfall of both of our nations, and perhaps all human nations…”

Cid nodded. “Aye, it very well may… and we very well may enter war with the Elves and spend a hundred years locked in bloody combat… and we very well may be overrun with monsters, or see our nations fall apart and our culture tarnish…”

Cid paused. “… But it is equally possible that we shall be victorious. That we shall stand proud and tall, and we shall defeat every enemy. My faith tells me that is what shall happen. So as long as I draw breath and can lift my sword, I shall fight valiantly against all of our foes and I shall do so with a smile on my face.”

[Ankh-Morpork]

[Assassin’s Guild]

Musashi blinked. Then he immediately shook his head.

“Oh, I’m not here to kill anyone! Well… I am, but I’ll do it myself. I’m here for information, Lord Downey! I am Musashi, one of the Princes of Wutai. I’m looking for a man who has been trying to kill me… and since you’re Head of the Assassin’s Guild, I was hoping maybe he came here? I mean, given that I’m still alive, I don’t think you took the job to kill me… but perhaps you still know something.”

Musashi knew that flattery was powerful.

[Outside Vale --> Near Ankh-Morpork]

“… We’ll see.” Raven said simply.

The three pressed on, and soon they were heading towards the swamplands that would take them to Ankh-Morpork. Raven suddenly stopped.

“… I sense something. Something powerful… and dark.”

[Sunderland]

Hoenheim paused, his golden eyes looking over Samuel.

“… Curiosity is hardly a reason to trifle with such things. I gave the same advice to someone I knew a long time ago, and he ignored my advice…”

Hoenheim paused. “And not long later, he became the Dark Lord and claimed the lives of millions, changing the history of our world forever.”
