Garnet let out a small sigh and she leaned against the side of the cart.

“… I’m afraid my thoughts have been grim for a long time.” She admitted, her mind going back to her mother, and the problems that had risen in Alexandria over the last year.

“I worry what will happen now…” Garnet admitted.

[Avalon]
[Castle Courtyard]

When Sai skidded to a halt, Gawain stopped in his movement. It was clear now that they were not locked in a flurry of sword strikes that Gawain was breathing hard, but he clearly still had stamina.

“There are few people I can recall who have your skill, Sai.” Gawain said with a nod. “I don’t dare predict how an actual battle would go, and I hope we shall never have need to find out. You have impressed me.”

It was high praise coming from Gawain. Among the Knights of the Round, only Cidolfus Orlandu and Lancelot du Lac were on par with Gawain, though the King was better than them all.

[…]

Lancelot looked over to Samuel.

“I am… but whether or not I help you is hardly Gawain’s decision.”

[Ankh-Morpork]

[Streets]

Nanami shook her head. She was unharmed, but there was an aura of heaviness around her. She was seething with rage, and only barely able to contain it beneath her icy exterior.

“It’s much worse than you think,” Nanami grumbled. “Maghda is operating here as I feared, and she’s taking even more than her usual precautions to stop those who would thwart her plans. If we are lucky, we will get another chance to stop… if we are truly fortunate, maybe more than one… but time is running ever shorter before all of Ankh-Morpork burns.”

[Other Streets]

Musashi walked happily with Kyran, smiling to her. He was well aware that they were being followed, but he didn’t mind it.

“You look beautiful,” Musashi commented as they moved down the streets.

[Vale Ruins]

“… Hmm? Ah… people… yes, I see… so that time has come…”

The floating eye suddenly zipped around the room, moving much faster than something its size should be able to. It examined everyone in turn, and then returned to Garet.

“You have come to the Chamber… but you are not the valiant knights that I was told were coming… so who are?”

[Alexandria]
[Open Field]

Raven was a bit surprised that Umbra was so willing to help her. She wondered if perhaps he did not fully understand the dangers… she could tell him everything. She could warn him of her lineage, of her connection to the Dark Lord and to things even worse… She owed him that much, didn’t she? To tell him the truth?

… She said nothing. She did owe him the truth, but she could not bring herself to speak of those things.

“Thank you,” She said simply and she looked on ahead of them. “We cannot go to Alexandria Castle Town… in fact, we must leave the country. We can go East to Gondor, but I do not think we would be welcome… or South. If we travel south, we have the option of Ankh-Morpork or Hyrule…”

Sai shrugged.

"An actual battle would not be a fair contest, I'll lay that on the table right now. I am a master of runic magic and can use it in between sword strikes, my true mastery lies on two-sword combat, and I'm not using my full physical strength right now. I don't deny that you probably have a collection of tricks too, but it's been a while since I have been matched when I was REALLY going for it. It's nothing against you, but when I fight, I rarely fight fair."

He chuckled, eyes alight. Instead of his usual somewhat sour and gloomy expression and threatening eyes, right now he looked far more open and honest, as if the fight has allowed him to loosen up a bit, quite the opposite effect one would think of battle to have. He hated to even think of what his reception would be in the Thalmor lands...

"You're very skilled though. I can't touch you with skill alone, and that's an accomplishment not many can boast of. Care to see how well you can do if I have a second blade, Gawain? Or shall we continue as we are for now, give the watchers new legends to whisper about?"

Umbra winced a little bit when Raven mentioned Hyrule. While he always denied ever having a true father, for his sire was an orc that had him on a whim then abandoned both him and his mother to the elements, he still had orcish blood. The few times he visited Hyrule were the outskirts, and any elf he met faced him with contempt and hate.

He had been chased away from Hyrule once when he was mistaken for an attacking orc, and still had the scars from the arrow impacts from elven bows. The lithe and pointy-eared race were absolutely amazing archers, he had to admit.

"I don'... Uhh... T'ink dat going to da Hyrule lands is a good idea. I've got greenskin blood, I ain't welcome nowhere in de elven kingdoms. I've been to dat Ankh-Mo'pork place, and it ain't too bad fer a place full o' chaos and legalized crime."

He gave the girl a tight smile.

"Best if ye choose a place, Raven girl. I ain't been to 'nough places ta really say anythin'."

Didymus sighed at Garnet's statements.

"Heh...so, is this it? All who would protect their realms are doomed to this? This constant depression, this constant worry, with only sellswords, brawlers, braggarts and heretics ever being optimistic?"

He chuckled.

"I guess this is the life we accept when we make the problems that beset this world our problems as well."

He paused, silently praying.

He chuckled again.

"Elder, do you have anything more merry to talk of? I fear that if things continue as they are this conversation and our adventure may be too grim even for MY liking. But...it saddens me that it seems that a reflection on our mission is growing too depressing for my liking."

He chuckled again, and for a moment looked as though he would burst into tears, his grin still nibbling at his face.

Gawain could not help but laugh. “An actual battle is never a fair contest. There is little fairness when one’s life is on the line.”

When the subject came of continuing the battle – or raising the stakes, Gawain was eager to accept. The battle was pushing him to his limits, a feat he rarely achieved, and it was quite fun as well.

However, at that moment, a man rushed over and whispered something to Gawain. The knight’s jovial expression soured, and he turned briefly to Sai.

“I’m afraid this shall have to wait for another time.”

[Alexandria]

[Open Field]

Raven paused and considered Umbra’s words. The Hylilan did not get along well with Orcs, and it was unlikely they would make an exception for an Orc traveling alongside someone like her.

“Ankh-Morpork it is.” Raven agreed. “But… we don’t have supplies to reach it. We’ll need to stop in a town along the way. Vale is nearby, we can always stop there.”

[Gondor]

[Wagon]

“It is the burden we must bear.” Cid said, nodding to Didymus’ response to Garnet. “Those who stand on guard against the horrors of this world are naturally inclined to think about those horrors. However, even as we must be vigilant against those threats, we must be equally vigilant against dwelling on them.”

Garnet paused at that statement and she tilted her head. “I don’t quite understand… with everything that is happening, how can we not dwell on it? My mother…”

Cid shook his head. “When you dwell upon such things, it becomes much easier to make mistakes, and much more tempting to take shortcuts that should not be taken.”

Sai was starting to grin rather manically when Gawain said that he'd be good to go, good to spar for some more. He was actually in the middle of drawing out a second blade, a motion that seemed far more familiar in his hands than even a single blade when Gawain was interrupted by the new arrival.

"Oi, what's the big idea?"

He wasn't exactly happy to be interrupted from his spar. No fighter would in his situation, and this was no different. But he didn't fully pull his off-hand blade out, willing to hear why he was being interrupted.

"This better be some important news to interrupt this. I was having fun."

Umbra chuckled good-naturedly, still jogging along with the girl. She DID have a point, usually people didn't last long without provisions, but Umbra wasn't too worried.

"Ya don' have ta be dat worried 'bout it, Raven Girl. We can live off da land, I can hunt an' shoot a bow 's well as any of 'em archer guys. If we gotta stop by a town, I ain't gonna complain, but fresh hunt 's always bettah dan de stuff dey sell in markets."

He paused for a moment in his speech... And then a hand came up to his neck as the half-orc chuckled uncomfortably.

"Dat's right... I ain't got a bow no more. Umm... Oops."

By the time Cid had replied, Didymus was reciting a litany under his breath.

When he was finished, he looked up.

"I believe I know what the Elder refers to...and I've found that things like litanies often help to direct my focus in more appropriate directions. Dwelling on them, at least, on them alone, tends to...enfeeble...someone. Cloud our vision. I must confess, I DO wish, perhaps, that our Lord's face would not be so...obscured? Challenged? Perhaps that He would make Himself even MORE known, but...it is not my place to decree His actions."

He still wore his grin, though it was clear he had meant every word he had said.

He sighed, though.

"Still, even for a Paladin, all things in this world considered, it's can seem rather...trying..."

The newcomer merely looked quizzically at Sai. He was merely a squire, but he did not know who the dark elf was, or why he was here, so he said nothing of the news he had brought to Gawain and then he turned and departed out to the side door of the courtyard.

“I was enjoying our battle as well, but I’m afraid we shall have to put it on hold. Something odd is happening in Sunderland, a small trading town due south of Camelot. Apparently there has been an outbreak of a strange illness, believed to be caused by some kind of dark magic.”

Gawain frowned. He had just returned from a dangerous mission and wanted to relax a bit.

“Sunderland?” Lancelot looked up. “That’s where they live. Odd lot. I’m sure the townsfolk will already suspect they have something to do with what’s going on. The King will want to be told…”

[Open Field]

Raven smiled – a little. It was really hard to tell, as only the corner of her mouth curved, but it was probably the best anyone could expect for her.

“We should stop at Vale and get supplies, and maybe we can get a bow too. It’s not terribly far, if my memory serves right…”

[Gondor]
[Cart]

“No one ever said that life or service was easy… in fact, the opposite is often said. But then, nothing worth doing is easy.” Cid shook his head.

Suddenly Garnet sat up and looked around. Her face paled and she looked terrified.

“Something is wrong… I can sense a powerful magic following us…”

Cid’s face turned grim and he peered out the back of the cart. “I see nothing behind us… but I do not doubt you, Princess. Be alert!”

-Avalon-

“I just need directions,” Samuel said idly to Lancelot, then looked up as Gawain received news of some mysterious illness.

He paused, getting up and clapping his hands together. Certainly he wanted to complete his own quest, but he could easily afford distractions along the way.

“If you need assistance, I would be happy to lend a hand. No charge, unless you don't like people working just because, then I'll charge,” Samuel said with a bit of a grin.

Besides, it was possible what he was looking for might be located there.

-Ankh-Morpork-

Museum

“Just watch where you put your hands, buddy!” Elysia yelled from behind Musashi and Kyran, as the group entered the museum.

There wasn't very many people in there. There usually wasn't, as Ankh-Morpork's idea of fancy was being able to spell 'fancy.'*

There did seem to be an inordinate amount of sharply dressed men in black clothes, standing around pretending as though they didn't have anything else to be doing.

Kyran lead Musashi along the halls, stopping by a display, showing some Wutai artifacts and pieces, and in one case was a Talisman, with what looked like a sheep on it. There was an older man with a cane by it, reading the inscription idly.

Streets

Angua smirked slightly, shaking her head.

“That witch has seriously underestimated Ankh-Morpork. Mister Vimes isn't going to let her burn down this city. We'll stop her,” Angua said to Nanami, “Do you still have that device the wizards gave you?”

Suddenly, Nanami might sense something...there was a person on the roof, about to fire a crossbow bolt at her!

-Vale Ruins-

“We're...ummm...Adepts...” Garet answered, rubbing the back of his head, “What do mean, valiant knights? There's no knights in Vale...”

* They were pretty sure there was a 'q' in there, as 'q' seemed pish posh and regal to them. And probably an 'e'.

Sai let go of the second blade finally, letting it retreat back into the dimensional pocket, throwing the other sword in as well, the red-and-black vortex closing moments later. Throughout the entire fight, he never once touched the two swords on his back, the two beautiful, ornate and deadly-looking hand-and-a-half swords.

"Dark magic? Well, it's a good thing you have an expert right here who can help you... Provided I get compensated of course. Same rates as before if you wish to hire me, Gawain, and I can go check it out and possibly solve the problem for you."

He finally turned his attention on Lancelot, and his expression closed up almost immediately, the elf returning to a guarded, cocky sort of presence.

"If the king wants to be informed, then please do so. You're the one who brought it up. The place you brought up doesn't ring a bell either, so would you care to share some info? I hate going into situations blind."

Umbra nodded eagerly, his pace increasing a bit as he turned his jog into a loping run that had him deeply breathing, but not tired and far from winded.

"Lead on, Raven Girl!"

He continued to run along happily, looking quite careless and free-spirited as his legs pumped underneath him. He hadn't had someone to talk to for a long time, and his adventures never had him conversing with people much. Now, he suddenly had a traveling companion.

She seemed very surly, cold, and seemed to breathe the sort of aura that told everyone around her not to touch. Even he wasn't immune, and Umbra sometimes found himself wanting to back away from the girl a little, because he hadn't met someone as creepy before. But then, he reminded himself that she was alone now, and he had sworn to help her.

And there was something else about the girl, something distant, but perhaps just a little kind.

"Ya need anythin' in de comin' town? Pants, perhaps?"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ankh Morpork
[Streets, Rooftop]

As the crossbowman was about to fire a bolt down onto the street and at someone, something else appeared behind his prostrate form. It wasn't that the man would hear a sound, for there was none, but suddenly...

Suddenly, it felt like there were feral beasts behind him, angry and hungry, stalking him and watching him like a tasty morsel. Like prey. This feeling, an almost overwhelming ki, was being produced by a man in tattered clothing and a straw hat who was SITTING behind the sniper.

And all that ki was focused on the poor man with the crossbow.

"... The monkey thinks that perhaps it is not fair to aim at people down below without properly introducing ones self."

Didymus' head shook as Garnet and Cid had their exchange.

So, the eyes that guide us are either blind to or not letting us see something that a...mage...can sense so clearly? This...does not bode well...

Still he drew his sword, beseeching God silently for guidance...

Lancelot had to raise an eyebrow at Samuel’s request, but he merely shrugged. “Directions to where?”

When Samuel offered to help, Gawain nodded. “It would be appreciated… but you should all know, I cannot guarantee your safety from this illness. Aid is welcome, but if you would rather walk away, no one shall blame you.”

Gawain looked serious. The illness, whatever its cause, was troublesome… and the location did not seem coincidental.

As Sai spoke to Lancelot, the long-haired knight turned his head to the elf.

“Sunderland is a small village, and a historic one. A very prominent family owns most of the land around Sunderland.” Lancelot explained, but it seemed clear he was not telling all there was to tell.

[Ankh-Morpork]

[Streets]

“Yes, it is…” Nanami reached for the device when she suddenly stopped. Her Nanami-Sense was tingling, and she looked around – and her eyes quickly came to a rooftop. She could not see what was happening, but she had the feeling that something bad was going on.

Nanami narrowed her eyes, and without a word she ran towards the building!

[Museum]

Musashi looked around the museum. It was nowhere near as nice as the museums back home, though in Wutai people often made a grandiose deal of history and museums were much more popular than here in Ankh-Morpork.

“Wow…” Musashi said as he saw all of the old Wutai artifacts – and the Sheep Talisman. “To think so many old pieces from my country would make it all the way out here.”

[Alexandria]

[Vale]

“I’m fine.” Raven replied to Umbra, and she tried not to let the pink in her cheek show from his comment about her attire.

The two soon reached Vale, a tiny town at the base of a volcanic mountain. It was near the border with the Morgul Mountains, and although the town was small, it was historic.

Vale had been founded during the Great War. Several human and elven mages and adepts had set the city up as a base, and after the war, many had stayed.

“Seems peaceful enough…” Raven commented as they arrived at the main gate.

[Vale Ruins]

“No knights? Hmm… times have changed…” The Wise One floated around for a moment, as if trying to gather its thoughts.

Felix watched the strange… thing… with a mixture of amusement and fear. What was this thing, and what did it mean?

“Yes… okay… I think I get it now.” The Wise One sudden turned back to the Adepts. “Hmm… you see, long ago, this place was built to house the Elemental Stars. Those Stones you have been touching without permission… hrmm… you see, those Stones are the heart of all Psynergy.”

The Wise One floated about a bit more. Every now and then the ground shook, and the flames down in the bottom of the inky blackness beneath them would wax hot. Whenever it happened, the Wise One would close its eye and the flames would die down.

“Psynergy was used in the War, you see… by both sides… the Dark Lord sought the Elemental Stars, and eventually a Wizard came and sealed them here… ho-horum… that Wizard asked me to stay and guard the Stones… he said ‘One day, a group of a great and valiant knights shall come for these Stones’…”

The Wise One paused. “Ah… but you are not valiant knights… so why have you come for the stones?”

[Gondor]

[Carriage]

The reason that Cid and Didymus could not see the pursuer behind them was as simple as it was deadly; because the one giving chase was actually beside them.

The cart was still driving near the woods, though the wooded area should have been too thick with trees for anyone to ride through it.

The figures rode like shadows, slinking between gaps in the trees that should be impossible to reach. However, at that moment, the cart moved out into the open fields of Rohan, and the treeline ended.

Then Didymus and Cid could see them. Strange shadowy figures riding towards them, moving as if they were incorporeal. There was a ghastly hissing sound as the pursuers chased them.

“Our enemy is before us…” Cid muttered. “God willing we shall outrun them, but I fear we may have to outfight them instead.”

Didymus was incredulous.

"How on Earth could a mage feel this when we were not alerted?!" he cried.

"Some sort of test?!"

He shook his head, took a deep breath, and recited a litany. This was no time for questions. He would address them later.

He began to pray, and, thankfully, his sword began to glow...

“Don't worry about me. I haven't been sick a day in my life,” Samuel said to Gawain, then turned back to Lancelot, “As for directions, I was looking for a certain place. Plants won't grow, abilities don't work, people feel weak, a place like that.”

It would be a sign of cold iron...and hopefully a place that Samuel could find another piece of the armor...

-Ankh-Morpork-

Streets

The Assassin froze. All assassins in the Guild had a number of courses, classes, and the like before they were even allowed to just put someone in their sights, much less actually kill someone. They were professionals, wearing impeccable black suits, and killed in style.

But they were still human...for lack of a better term, and the man panicked, turning towards Dyne, and fired the bolt at him!

Angua paused, then sniffed the air, smelling the familiar aroma of the Assassin's Guild. It smelled of clean black clothes, soap, and lots of metal.

Museum

“Most certainly brought here by Wutai immigrants to Ankh-Morpork. Probably sold to various people until they wound up here,” the older man who was looking at the exhibits said idly. Behind Kyran and Musashi, Elysia had frozen up, staring wide eyed at the older man.

He waved his cane idly, turning towards Musashi and Kyran.

“It's refreshing to see young people interested in this stuff,” the older man said. He was dressed in all black, and there was a sudden...smell from the man, emanating from the ground.

There was an old dog sitting by the man's feet, panting idly and whizzing on Musashi's foot.

-Vale-

Ruins

“We're getting these because Psynergy is dying out, ummm..sir...?” Jenna spoke up, not entirely sure how to address the floating rock eye, “If we don't light the lighthouses, their won't be any Adepts anymore...”

City

As one green skinned guy entered the town, there was already another.

He was a teenage boy, green skinned, pointy ears, and a couple fangs. He had entered Vale recently, on his way towards Ankh-Morpork.

The people in Vale didn't mind him too much. He was friendly enough, and most in Vale had a relatively strange ability as well, compared to the rest of the world.

Lancelot chuckled at Samuel’s request.

“… I don’t believe in coincidence. You ask to be taken to where plants don’t grow, abilities fail and people grow weak? Sunderland IS that place.”

Lancelot shook his head. “Most blame those things on the family who runs Sunderland.”

[Ankh-Morpork]

[Streets]

Nanami rushed towards the building where the Assassins and Dyne struggled on the roof. She jumped and ran up the side of the wall, magic sparkling around her feet as she headed to the rooftop.

When she arrived, she immediately tossed a ball of ice forward at one of the Assassins!

[Museum]

“Gaaaaaaah! What the **** man!?” Musashi jumped back and shook his foot. He frowned and flicked his wrist, sending a gust of wind to dry his shoe. He glared up at the man in black.

“What the hell, buddy? Why do you have a dog in here anyway?”

[Vale]

[Ruins]

“Hmmm?” The Wise One blinked once or twice. “Psynergy is dying? Yes… I know. The Wizard told me that this would one day happen, and that they would restore Psynergy to the world…”

Felix frowned. “Then… we’re supposed to take them? Is that what you’re saying?”

[City]

Raven immediately looked around, trying to find a shop. They would need food, and a bow for Umbra. She landed on the ground, deciding that she should stop floating while around people.

“Umbra, I think there’s a shop up that hill.” Raven called.

[Gondor]

[Cart]

Cid’s eyes were wide and he was silent as he saw the shadowy creatures that rode towards them. He had the unmistakable look of a veteran warrior who recognized a dangerous foe.

“Princess… have you seen these creatures before?” Cid asked in a hushed tone.

Garnet nodded. “I believe so… I saw them lurk near the Castle before…”

“Then I finally understand,” Cid frowned. “Shades. Such creatures are near impossible to sense unless you’ve seen them before. They dwell in the very heart of the Dark Lands… I had hoped that such creatures no longer lived in this world.”

“Well, that works well,” Samuel said, “I'll help you guys get to the bottom of this. Since it looks like what I'm looking for will be there too, that can work well for my payment.”

-Ankh-Morpork-

Streets

First some strange man was terrifying him, now the target was attacking him!

It was like when the Assassin's Guild would still take out hits on Commander Vimes, though the being terrified and the attacking came from one person.

The ice ball hit the Assassin hard, and he skidded around the roof, holding his hands up.

“I surrender!” he yelled, “I know when I'm beat!”

Museum

Almost immediately after Musashi yelled at the man, several plain looking men in black suits surrounded him, all holding a various blade.

“Surely you like dogs, young man?” the older man said, “His name is Wuffles. He's quite old, but he likes to go out and about at times. I felt a trip to the museum would be good for him.”

“You idiot!” Elysia yelled, “I knew you were bad for my sister! Sir, I'll have him arrested right now.”

“Now, now,” the older man said idly, waving his cane idly, “No need for that. This young man...hmmm...Musashi Miyamoto, correct? You're in line for the Wutai throne, correct?”

He smirked a little, “Awfully rude not to introduce myself. I am Havelock Vetenari, the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork.”
