“… Well… good news for both of you… your kids are in the hands of one of the finest Victors the Games ever produced.… Me.”

Kanna was both relieved and very very worried when Rica announced that he would be Melanie's mentor. On one hand Rica wasn't too far off with the declaration that he was one of the finest victors of the games...He had in fact won, and rather quickly in the game. He had obvious skills that would be vital for Melanie to know...But on the other hand....He was a belligerent drunk...

Kanna couldn't help but to be worried.

"Rica. Listen to me. You cannot let her be killed. You have to help Melanie win" Kanna said, entirely serious. "She may not look like much, but she's got an amazing skillset."

Meanwhile Jason slipped into the room, coming face to face with Melanie who was sitting in a chair, staring at the hem of her dress. The instant Jason cleared his throat Melanie looked up...It was obvious she had been crying.

Jason felt his heart breaking "Oh Mel...."

Melanie give a little whimper, standing up and rushing over to the boy. She hugged him tightly and started to cry. "I don't wanna go" she sobbed pathetically. "I don't know how to fight! I won't last five minutes!"

Jason rubbed the girl's back, letting her cry. "You're stronger than you think...Don't worry, you'll be okay"

[...]

"Thank you for checking on us" Rose said to Aboy gratefully, leading the group towards where Hammah would say his last goodbyes. all the while she had Agoi's hand in a death grip....She felt as if she would possible fall down if she let go....

They finally reached Hammah's room and at some point Colette had moved in front of Rose and pulled the door open. The little girl frowned, looking in. "...Hammah?"

[....]

Crystal frowned at Sama, not particularly liking the idea of anything with bombs....

"The Peacekeepers, heck the whole government is on top alert today, after all they expect something to happen during the reaping...You'd be killed in an instant."

Rica stood for a moment, with the same half-drunken expression he had been wearing the whole time. Kanna was being serious, and Rica could tell… but he barely cared. He wasn’t sure if he was angry at Kanna, or if he was happy to see her again.

“… Oh come now, do you think I’d purposely want one of my Tributes to die?” Rica raised an eyebrow. “Don’t worry. I’ll do what I can to keep your kid alive.”

[…]

“… I know…” Sama sighed, leaning against the wall. “I just… hate this whole thing.”

Musashi frowned. “We’ll figure something out…”

[…]

Connor sat in his room, alone. His parents had come and gone, and now, he was leaning back on the bench. He knew that he would probably be dead in just a few days, but instead of feeling sad, he just felt… numb.

Kanna didn't seem convinced, but she said nothing against him. Instead she left him on one thing.

"It's more important to you than you know" she muttered.

With that she stepped into the room, pausing when she saw Melanie sobbing into her brother's coat. When Kanna stepped in Melanie looked up and wiped her face.

"Rica will do everything in his power to get you ready" Kanna said simply, coming over. "You need to remember that half the challenge of this is to garner the support of the viewers. They will be the key to you receiving sponsors and important weapons and supplies. Charm them."

Melanie sniffled "I don't want to charm them..." she muttered.

"You charm them or you end up dead, it's that simple Melanie..." Kanna retorted, earning a harsh jab from Jason. He probably didn't appreciate her bluntness. Kanna sighed and continued "Just be yourself...You're charming on your own"

[...]

Connor's door opened and a teenage girl stepped in, holding a tray of half empty wine glasses. She didn't seem to notice the boy immediately, but when she did the stumbled back and dropped the tray. Despite all of this she didn't say a word, she actually barely made a sound at all...

She instantly moved to grab the broken glass, all the while keeping her head down.

Rica was far too drunk to question what she meant. He just gave an obnoxious little wave as she headed off to see Melanie. Rica would confront the problem of training his ex’s daughter later… first he needed to deal with his other charge.

He stepped over to the room that Galv was waiting in, and wondered if Samuel was inside. He was a bit worried that his fellow Victor would be filling the boy’s head with horrible advice already. Rica shrugged and slumped against the wall, taking a long draw of vodka from his flask while he waited.

[…]

Connor gasped when the door opened. His parents had already gone, so he didn’t expect anyone to be here. He looked up and saw a girl… she was absolutely beautiful. Connor was pretty terrible with girls… and even if he wasn’t, he was on his way to die on television.

Still, when he saw her picking up the broken glass, Connor moved forward and picked some up too.

“Are you okay?” Connor asked her. “You didn’t get cut, did you?”

“Are you okay? You didn’t get cut, did you?”

Sarai looked up at the boy for only a moment before bringing her eyes back down and gathering the glass even quicker. While she tried not to acknowledge the boy too much she did shake her head a bit, so he would know she was fine.

As she said this she noticed that her hands were red and sticky. She had in fact cut herself a couple of times, but knew she needed to hurry. Apparently she came into the wrong room.

Connor frowned. This girl was extremely quiet… Connor was the shiest person he knew, and this girl surprised even him. He frowned as he noticed blood drip onto the ground beneath her.

“You did get cut,” Connor sighed, and he grabbed the trash can from the side of the room. “Put the glass in here and give me your hands. I can help.”

The girl quickly dropped the glass in the bin, but the shook her head vigorously when Connor offered to help her hands. She was fully aware of the rules; and she also knew she was breaking like nine of them just by being here.

Instead she rubbed her hands on her pants, soaking up the blood that way...As she did so she snuck another peek at the boy...He looked around his age but she didn't understand why he was just hanging around here alone-

Sarai gave a little gasp. He must have been one of the tributes...

Connor frowned as the girl decided to just wipe the blood on her pants. That was no way to treat a wound. Connor had spent most of his life healing people, thanks to the powers he had, and he hated to see someone in pain.

… Yes, I know what you’re thinking, and Connor will try to heal his fellow Tributes once the Games begin.

Connor reached out and grabbed Sarai’s wrists, pulling her hands out. In any other situation, he would be terrified to even touch a girl, but when someone was wounded he forgot all about how shy he was. He put his hands over her, and a very warm golden light began to shine, closing the cuts on her hands.

After a few seconds, he released her wrists… her hands would be as good as new.

“There,” Connor said with a smile. “Isn’t that better? I’m Connor. What’s your name?”

Sarai didn't like when people grabbed at her, as it usually meant something bad would be happening to her in the very near future. So when Connor took her hands the girl stiffened considerably and tried to pull them back. She only stopped when a light came over her wounds, and her cuts seemed to seal themselves.

The girl watched with wide eyes, never seeing anyone in the games with such a powers. She was so memorized that she almost forgot how much trouble she was going to be in.

“Isn’t that better? I’m Connor. What’s your name?”

Sarai suddenly looked up, now knowing the identity of the boy who helped her. She repeated the same back in her mind, connecting face with name....

"......"

Sarai actually did want to tell him her name, but was unable to. She looked around the room before coming upon an idea. Quickly she took his hand and started to trace letters on his palm. She was very very glad that she had become an Avox much after learning to read and write...This was impossible with a lot of people who had grown up in this condition.

S.....A......R.....A.....I

"There you are!"

Suddenly Sarai looked over to the door, Seneca Crane standing there with a very annoyed expression on his face. The man came forward and grabbed the girl's hair, tugging her backwards. "You idiot, does this look like the kitchen?" he then seemed to notice Connor. "My greatest apologies my boy! It seems as if you really can't get good help these days!"

The man gave a chuckle but all the while yanked on Sarai's long hair. She didn't make a sound.

Connor gasped as he realized just what Sarai was. An Avox. A criminal who had her tongue removed and had been forced into a life of servitude… no, what the Capitol did… it was slavery, pure and simple. It was just one of the many things Connor despised about the Capitol.

He had heard stories, but never met an Avox before.

Connor would have said something, but at that moment Seneca Crane appeared and grabbed Sarai by her hair. Connor gasped and rushed forward.

“Stop! You’re hurting her!” Connor growled. He didn’t even realize that Crane was the man who would be responsible when Connor died in the Arena. All he knew was he hated to see this poor girl attacked by this bearded jerk.

Sarai's eyes widened when the boy, Connor, came to her aid. She knew that was a horrible move on his part and would only lead to pain for both of them. She tried to shake her head or give him some kind of look, but times like this really made her hate not being able to speak any longer.

Crane frowned, eying Connor before looking back at Sarai.

"Trust me, any pain inflicted on her she fully deserves. She was committed of treason which does not entitle her to any civil rights"

He then dropped the girl's hair, allowing her to scramble back to a standing position. Sarai was careful to keep her gaze low.

"Please also keep in mind that you are only permitted to speak to an Avox when you are giving a direct order. Tributes should set a good example for our great country after all."

Connor didn’t care. His eyes were locked on Crane, and there was a burning anger in them. Most of the time, Connor was the gentlest boy in the world… but right now he was angry. It was the same anger he felt whenever someone was brought in to his parents clinic after being whipped by a Peacekeeper.

“… Tributes are supposed to have an Avox assigned to them during training, right?” Connor asked, narrowing his eyes further at Crane. “I want her.”

Crane looked down at Connor, narrowed eyes matching his own. He debated saying no to the boy, but who was he to upset one of the Tributes? He'd be dead soon enough anyways....And now he had more of a reason to make his life a living hell in the games.

It really was a win win situation for the Capitol.

"Fine then, you can have her." Seneca said simply, grabbing Sarai's arm and looking at her carefully. "Do what he says"

Sarai nodded, before being pushed back towards Connor. The girl rubbed her arm and watched.

"Peacekeepers will be here in a bit so that you can meet the other Tributes as well as your mentor." Crane said, leaving the two alone once more.

Connor glared at Crane. He was a horrible person… and he was going to be the man responsible for Connor’s death. Connor still didn’t quite realize that. Connor looked over to Sarai as Crane left and he walked over to her.

“Um… Sorry… I just…” Connor rubbed his neck. “It seemed like you were going to be in trouble, and… well, I wanted to help you.”

Sarai watched as Crane left her with Connor, the girl still on edge. She had a feeling she'd be punished eventually for accidentally coming in here, but right now it had been worth it.

She wanted to thank Connor, but didn't have the ability....Instead she rubbed her arm. She looked around, spotting a television in the corner of the room playing some news coverage about the games....The volume was down, but the television couldn't be turned off. It was just another reminder of what the tributes had to go through.

Sarai walked over to the television pointing as the screen, where footage of fighting children was being played from last year, before pointing back at him.
