Lavan looked Nanami in the eye for a loooong time after she spoke. Or it must have felt like it, as his eyes bored into hers like a pair of drills, as if digging for something. Red eye stared into red eye as Lavan seemed to be searching for something, something only he seemed to see...

And then, suddenly, that grin was back on his face. Open. Happy. And... Somewhat elated.

"Yah, this is time nor place, so we're probably going to continue this conversation at some other time. But I'll say this, since it's all that can be said right now, and it's something you need to think about. My own teacher, the Guru of the Northern Mountain Range told me this sentence a long time ago, and has repeated it to me many times. It's simple. Clear. Hard to misunderstand. And that sentence goes as follows: "It is never too late to dream". No matter where you might be, what age you might be, what you are..."

He reached out, suddenly flicking Nanami on the forehead, his motion fast like a striking snake.

"It's never too late to dream... Or to chase said dream."

This was spoken with absolute conviction. Beyond anything the explosive-obsessed man had said before, this sentence came from him with a ring of finality, of truth he had imprinted unto himself like the truth of his own existence. He believed this ideal, trusted in it, had faith in it to such a degree that he seemed to radiate it.

And then, the sense of irreality was gone, and they were back to the front of Caesar's tent, standing in front of the corpse of the leader of the Legion, gunfire sounding from all around them.

"Now then! Signal, signal, signal... If you're not going to let me nuke it, at least let me set it on fire! THAT should draw some attention right? Come oooon, I wanna burn stuuuuff!!!"

Now becomes the the past in an instant — and everyone will eventually die! Destiny triumphs over human knowledge and goes mad! That is the way of things! I spit upon this frail, crazed, world! I spit upon the Second Law of Thermodynamics!
~ Desty Nova, Karmatron Theory

Let them Label me! Let them swear and curse at me as I tug humanity like a bucking bull into the darkness of the unknown, revealing its secrets to the sane and driving them MAD! In ages long past, I shall be looked upon as a tyrant and a savior! As a savant and as a fool! My work shall advance humanity long past its time, throw it into the unknown future and force it to grow strong or FALL! Years from now, when I will inevitably be removed, my work shall continue to progress, because these things cannot be denied! Governments will publicly criticize my work, but privately conduct research that advances it! I shall imprint myself into the annals of history, among the stars that shine as brightly as Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, Benjamin Franklin, Dmitri Mendeleev, Nikola Tesla, and countless others! My work will shine as brightly as any star, and I AM ITS CREATOR!!!

Nanami remembered the first time she had killed. It had, of course, been in the Hunger Games. Nanami had become separated from him and was lost in a thick forest alone. She was low on food, completely out of water, and her only defense was a small silver knife she had collected at the Cornucopia.

Then Nanami spotted her. She was a small girl, probably no older than thirteen. She was huddled alone, beneath a tree, crying and clutching a small bag of food to her chest. A fellow tribute, stuck in a lush, green hell – just like Nanami.

Nanami felt her stomach growl and she knew she needed that food. She wanted to steal it, but did not want to fight. However, hunger was powerful, and Nanami moved forward. Before she could brandish the knife and demand the food, the girl had struck.

The girl was clever. It was a trap. Nanami felt the knife go into her belly before she even realized the girl had jumped up and stabbed her. It became a brutal struggle, and Nanami could not recall all of the details… all she remembered was that at the end, the other tribute lay dead, covered in blood… and Nanami stood over her, holding a silver knife stained with red, and sobbing uncontrollably.

A long time had passed since the Hunger Games… there was a lot more blood on Nanami’s hands… but that girl had always stayed with her. A reminder of the innocence lost in that forest that day… and the new, violent path Nanami found herself on.

"It's never too late to dream... Or to chase said dream."

“… That’s so naïve.” Nanami shook her head. “What if your dream depends on someone else? Someone who is gone? What then? What’s the point in clinging to a dream when it can’t come true?”

Nanami shook her head. “Burn whatever you want. I’m going back.”

Safe House

Sarai deflated a bit in Connor's arms, the girl trying not to sound frustrated with him. She knew Connor was trying, and she loved him for that...She just didn't want him to die for her or anyone else. His life had worth too!

"I-I...I don't know what I would do without you" Sarai mumbled, resting her head against Connor's shoulder "S-Seriously, I have no clue what would happen next."

Sarai was pretty much plucked from everything she knew when Connor found her, she didn't have any clue if her family was still alive, she had no money to her name, nor did she had a home. But none of that disheartened her when she realized that at least she had him.

So if she ever lost him her life would be ruined.

[...]

"Most people around here don't camp, hell they barely stay outdoors long enough to get from building to building." Chloe exclaimed, trying to think of a place to get supplies. "Though some people enjoy the novelty of it all and will buy the equipment just to show it off. I'm pretty sure my parents had some hunting guns just for that reason."

Chloe then went silent for a moment, tapping her chin. "Even though no one ever actually needed camping equipment there should be some around here." she told him, heading towards a much busier part of town....This is where they would have to lay low.

Camp McCarren

Kanna went silent, giving a small sigh. She knew Rica had a point; any guy willing to die for Melanie couldn't be all bad...But she couldn't just make herself like some boy who took pleasure in putting his grubby little boy-hands all over her daughter.

"Just make sure he keeps his hands to himself. I don't want to be a grandma yet" she told him sternly.

Flashback

Kanna went quiet for a moment, looking to the side. "He won....He just hasn't come back yet for some reason..."

Great. Now Kanna wanted to drink! Why did she ever think talking to this man would be a good idea?!

She then blinked, looking to him "Wait. You won, that meant you were a mentor...Maybe you taught him! His name is Samuel"

[Safe House]

Connor frowned at Sarai’s words as she leaned against him. He had thought about Sarai’s life as a Avox before, but he never really thought about what her life would be like if they weren’t together. It had been Connor who got her dragged into the Games, and it was Connor who helped her escape the Games… if they weren’t together, where would she go?

Connor sighed deeply. He had endangered her needlessly with his desire for revenge… and now they were all in the eye of Gallic, and potentially in even worse danger.

“I promise you… we’re going to get past all of this.” Connor whispered and he kissed Sarai’s forehead. “We’ll get away from the Enclave, and find somewhere safe to live… I don’t know how, but I’ll make it happen.”

[Camp McCarren]

Rica smirked, and nodded his head.

“Don’t worry. I’m not an idiot and I’m not going to let those kids do anything like that. Just try to give him a chance.” Rica said, patting Kanna on the back.

[Flashback]

Rica let another long swig of the alcoholic brew in his glass slink down his throat, before he wiped his lips on his arm and looked up at Kanna. She was asking him about his work as a mentor now.

He groaned.

“… I was a mentor for… somebody.” Rica said, shrugging. “What the hell was his name? Uh…”

Rica is a raging alcoholic. His memory is pretty craptastic.

(Also GS isn’t sure if Rica mentored Sammy or not and neither CR or AGOI are on skype right now. XDX)

Safe House

Sarai closed her eyes as Connor kissed her head. She gave a sigh and nodded. "I trust you....R-Really I do. I'm just worried we're not going to make it that far."

She then gave a tiny laugh (it was still a bit sad) "I really shouldn't b-be so negative. W-We've cheated death a thousand times over by now"

Sarai moved forward, kissing Connor now.

Camp McCarren

Kanna stiffened when Rica gave her a pat on the back, but said nothing.

While she was very comfortable in her spot Melanie moved from Galv side and looked up at Rica. "Since we're safe for now, can I talk to you"

Kanna then grinned. "Good, Galv and I can speak"

From his spot Jason whispered "Doooooon't do it"

Flashback

"Wow, you must be really drunk if you can't remember" Kanna said, wrinkling her nose at his smell. She moved back and ran a hand through her dark hair. "Maybe you should lay off the booze."

She probably shouldn't tell people to drink less at a bar.

[Safe House]

Connor gave a small, sad smile when Sarai laughed. It was true… they had escaped death more than most people could even imagine. Maybe they would get out of this after all…

Then she kissed him. Connor was very happy about that, and held her close.

“We’ll make it. I promise.” Connor said when they broke for air.

[Camp McCarren]

Rica looked down to Melanie as she asked to talk to him. While he had no idea how to do this ‘father’ thing, he was determined to try.

“Of course.” Rica said. “Come on.”

Rica motioned for Melanie to follow him into the next room so they could talk without Kanna or Galv interrupting… he would just have to hope that Jason could keep Galv from being skinned alive while they were gone.

[Flashback]

"Wow, you must be really drunk if you can't remember"

Rica chuckled as he looked up at Kanna. “What was your first clue? The smell, or the way I slur my speech.”

Rica was well aware he was a drunkard. It helped pass the time and give him something to do aside from think about the Games. Then, he paused, and rubbed his chin.

“Oh… wait… yeah, I remember now. The person I mentored for this Hunger Game was a woman.”

… Yeah he’s really drunk if he didn’t remember that.

“… She didn’t make it past the first three days.” Rica said slowly, taking another drink.

Cess sighed. Being a hero... what did that mean, even, in this world?

“...Look at the kids...” Cess said suddenly, “Those two we rescued from the Games, Nanami. Galv and Melanie... We've been rallying around them, we've been fighting for them, and all the others.”

He laughed a little, smiling now, “We have to keep chasing our dreams so they can chase their's. Maybe we'll never make it, but maybe it means they can claim their's...”

-Panem Streets-

“Alright,” Edda said. He paused for a moment, then took Chloe's hand, leaning in close to her, looking like a simple teenage couple out and about.

“Be calm, don't look like you're trying to avoid attention...” Edda said quietly to the girl, “Act like you have every reason to be out and about here. Authority figures look for people who seem like they're trying to hide.”

He slid his hand around Chloe's waist now, grinning brightly.

-Camp McCarren-

“...Fine then...” Galv said, getting up now and walking over to Kanna, glancing back towards Melanie as she went to talk to Rica.

“What do you need to talk about?” Galv asked Kanna, arms crossed.

Camp McCarren

Melanie followed Rica into the other room, the girl proping herself up on a table and watching Rica for a moment silently. Finally she spoke. "I realized I don't know anything about you" she told him, absently playing with her long hair. "That's not fair. Everyone knows everything about me because of the Games...I want to know you"

Flashback

Kanna frowned, suddenly glad Samuel hadn't trained with this man. "You must not be a very good teacher than..." Kanna mumbled. She then noticed his face "You don't seem upset about it either. Don't you care?"

No. He's Rica.

[...]

"Rica may like you but we need to talk about you and Melanie." Kanna said to Galv "And how...Ahem, fast, things are moving with you too...I don't like you, but I respect the fact that you've protected my child...But I REALLY don't like you"

Panem Streets

Chloe stiffened a bit when Edda took her hand but didn't do anything to stop him. She just continued on, trying not to look strange. And then Edda's arm wandered around her waist. She felt a bit of heat creep up her face.

"Now now Edda, don't get too handsy or you might lose one" she joked with a slight grin.

“I don't mean to be rude,” Galv started, clearly meaning to be rude, “But I don't see how it's any of your business what's happening between Melanie and me.”

He glared at Kanna, actually a little taller then her in this RP!

Not gonna help him.

-Panem Streets-

Edda chuckled, seeing Chloe's face darken slightly, “Hey, I got you to blush. And I wouldn't mind if you put your arm around my waist...”

He smiled a bit, enjoying himself despite the prospects they faced. If he didn't enjoy these moments, he couldn't look forward to when they could be free, and have moments like this all the time.

“So... excluding the Games, ever been camping before?” Edda asked quietly.

[Hoover Dam]

Nanami shook her head, and crossed her arms. She gazed down at the battlefield below. Hoover Dam was covered in bullet holes, scorch marks, and bodies.

“… If we can give them a chance to make their dreams happen, then it’s worth it...”

[Camp McCarren]

Rica frowned as Melanie asked him about himself. He leaned back against the wall, closing his eyes for a moment.

“… You’re right. You don’t know much about me… but there’s a reason for that. There’s not much good that can be said about me, Melanie.”

Rica sighed. How was he supposed to tell his daughter that he was a good for nothing drunk? A man who spent all day lounging around in a house filled with empty alcohol bottles?

“… Go ahead. Ask me whatever you want.”

[Flashback]

Rica looked up at Kanna with a sad smirk.

“… Oh, I care. But what should I do? Cry? I ran out of tears when I was in the Games. Should I feel bad? Blame myself for not training her better? It wouldn’t make a difference. She wasn’t qualified for the Games… there was nothing I could have done.”

He sighed. “No… the best I can do for her is to simply drink in her memory.”

“… You’re right. You don’t know much about me… but there’s a reason for that. There’s not much good that can be said about me, Melanie.”

"But you're not a bad person" Melanie said

Yes he is.

“… Go ahead. Ask me whatever you want.”

Melanie brightened up and bit, giving a nod and thinking for a moment. "Alright, where were you born, do you have parents somewhere? Do I have grandparents?"

[...]

"Actually it's a lot of my business, considering she's my child" Kanna stated, staring right back up at Galv. While it was true that he was taller than her, she was still WAY more intimidating.

"I understand you love her, but you two are very big targets right now...You aren't suposed to be alive. If someone comes after you they're more likely to hurt Melanie to get to you. Vise versa with her."

Flashback

Kanna seemed to get upset at that statement. "That's a terrible thing to do!" she said in a huff, taking a swig of her own drink...She didn't realize that she was basically doing the same thing with Kain. "I don't even know why I wanted to talk to you"

Because he was attractive...In a gruffy sort of way.

Panem Streets

Chloe rolled her eyes despite a grin on her lips. "Maybe later lover boy" she told her

"So... excluding the Games, ever been camping before?”

Chloe nodded "In my training before the games. "I've had one since I was about six....My teacher used to stick me out in the woods and make me find my way back home. It usually took a couple days, especially when I was younger. Does that count as camping?"

Rica frowned. He was a very bad person. He was a drunkard, a whoremonger, a murderer and lots of other fun, family-friendly things. However, he decided not to tell his daughter just how horrible he really was.

“… I was born in the Capitol, actually. My father was an officer in the Enclave… until he got caught embezzling. This was back when President Autumn was in charge. My mother and father were both killed as traitors. I ended up an orphan on the streets.”

[Flashback]

Rica looked up at Kanna and shrugged his shoulders.

“Why do you care? Didn’t you say you had a friend in the Games? I was the coach for his competition. If she had won… that would mean he’d be dead.” Rica pointed out, not knowing Samuel or his special ability.

He took another drink.

“Yah...” Cess said, then sighed, turning to look at Lavan, then produced a stick of dynamite.

“Here... use this to start Caesar's tents destruction. A nice loud bang to get everyone's attention as it burns,” Cess offered.

-Camp McCarren-

“I won't let that happen,” Galv said, “Melanie and I will stick together... I'll keep her safe. If we stay apart, then I can't protect her.”

His brown eyes trailed off for a brief moment, lost in a still too recent memory.

“...when the Games ended we thought we both lost each other... I thought Melanie was killed at the end, and she thought the Enclave was going to kill me...” Galv said softly, “Neither of us are going to let that happen again...”

-Panem Streets-

Edda frowned. He decided if he ever met Chloe's parents and this teacher, he'd introduce them to his fist.

Sure his dad had brought him out into the wilderness to learn survival, but it had been a needed skill where he was from, and his father didn't leave him somewhere and expect him to survive by himself. He actually taught him the skills he needed.

“Can't believe your parents would do something like that...” Edda frowned, “But I guess that experience would help some. But you don't just dump someone in the woods... you got to show them how.”

He came to stop outside a store, looking through the windows. Camping supplies! Just what they needed.

“Looks like we found the place,” Edda said, stepping inside, looking around.

Melanie bit her lip as Rica told her about his family and what had happened to them...She couldn't imagine living on the streets, even though Jason had told her that they were close back when she was just a baby. Luckily Samuel, Galv's father, had decided to take them in. Since then she had lived a very pampered life. She never considered herself to be poor.

The girl decided to keep going, moving onto another question.

"How did you survive?" she asked.

[...]

"You aren't going to let up are you?" she asked "Even if they find us, capture Melanie and kill her you won't stop loving her. You're just putting her in danger"

"Oh calm down Kanna, it's not like they're making out on national television. No one's coming for Mel." Jason said, coming to the defense of Galv.

Panem Streets

"Eh, it just made me tougher in the end...More apt to kill someone since there was no one I could really trust. In reality they made exactly what they wanted out of me, a girl who could survive the games and kill without thinking too hard about it"

Chloe followed Edda into the shop, looking around at all the different equipment. She noticed that there were no knives or weapons of any sort available.

"I guess us Capitol folk aren't in need of stabbing things" she mumbled sarcastically.

Flashback

Kanna went quiet for a moment, Rica making a very valid point. "Touche" she mumbled "It's just...I can't imagine just giving up on someone's, knowing they weren't going to win from the start. I wonder if my husband's mentor did that."

Great. Now she needed A LOT of booze.

"How did you survive?"

A sad smile crossed Rica’s face as she asked him that question.

“Survival has never been the challenge for me. As you’ve experienced first-hand, now… it’s very hard for me to die.” Rica chuckled grimly. Then his face turned VERY serious.

“… That’s not to say it was easy, or fun. I spent a lot of time on the streets. A lot of hungry, cold nights. Eventually I learned how to steal for food… after a while, I started stealing more than just food. Made enough money that way to get my own place.”

[Safe House]

Connor gave a small, sad smile when Sarai laughed. It was true… they had escaped death more than most people could even imagine. Maybe they would get out of this after all…

Then she kissed him. Connor was very happy about that, and held her close.

“Your husband was in the Games?” Rica asked, looking up to Kanna. That surprised him. He had never seen her in Victor’s Village, so it was clear that her husband had not survived.

“Sorry.” Rica said quietly. “That’s tough.”
