[Flashback: Rebel Base]

Lavan shook his head.

"I never assumed that it was going to be a combat thing, and I never myself thought that you would think someone was expendable. It just doesn't make much sense to send a stranger to do the work you could only give to someone you could trust. Maybe it's one of your old-people secrets though, so I can't exactly relate... You old people and your secret society..."

He shrugged, before taking his feet off the desk and leaving forward towards the old man.

"Are you sure it's wise though? From what I'm hearing, this girl is far from stable and can become a major security risk. It's why you're sending me along, to manage the risk if I can. But why not simply seclude her until the problem is either solved by someone else or to assign a different mission that will NOT put her in any sort of touch with daddy issues? I know about trials of adversity, and I DO agree that people need to overcome their past to head into the future, but the girl kinda struck me as the type who's gone too obsessed with things."

He paused, thinking things over. He never was too good at logical thinking, not in the way everyone else seemed to be. But he was pretty good at sensing the intentions of others, and worming out details people really didn't want him to know. And this entire request smelled fishy.

"No, you're planning something. I can smell it, but I don't know what it is exactly. You're asking me to do a babysitting job for a girl who has either gone off the deep end or is close to it. Yet, you're sending her right into the frying pan. Wait... You're gambling. You're sending her right into the fires to see whether she burns down or comes out alive. And you want me to manage the fallout, whether it is helping the girl come to terms or finishing her off when she snaps for good. That gives you plausible deniability, because I'm not a rebel and still keeps your leading position solid, but allows you to kill two bird with one stone AND put me to work for your organization without having me go through the red tape... Is that it?"

He paused again... Before blinking, and raising an eyebrow.

"... Or are you really that much of a good guy, deep amongst all the crap conspiracies of the world and the Enclave's dealings? I'm not even sure which answer I will prefer right now..."

I can't see what you're imagining
-Presidential Estate-

When Connor, Sarai, Chloe, and Edda got into the basement, they'd find Lily waiting there, smiling at them as they came into it.

“Good, you made it,” Lily said, “Through here.”

She walked over to a door, opening it up, where it lead into a larger basement, with several cars in it. By the door was a limo, it's windows blacked out.

“In there. We'll get you out,” Lily said, “Or you can take your chances with Autumn and the Peacekeepers.”

-New Vegas Desert-

“Might make sneaking in harder...” Hammah said, frowning, “Maybe we should try a different approach? Pretend we're merchants or something?”

“Ran into some Legion patrols,” Samuel said to the soldier, “We need to speak with the commanding officer...Peterson, right? As soon as possible.”

-Flashback: Rebel Base-

“I suppose I should not be surprised that you are distrustful. No...I do not wish to see Nanami's life cut short for any reason. She is... very much like a daughter to me. I have taught her much, but I fear she has not learned the more important lessons,” Old Man Sensei said softly.

“I send Nanami out into the fires because there is nothing I can do that will stop her, short of knocking her out and keeping her locked away...” he said, “So I find that my best course of action is to try and at least mediate the damages.”

Silence, before he spoke again.

“As for my character... I killed other teens when I was one myself in a Games. I have wandered this land, faced Legionaries, snubbed House himself, made allies and enemies in the NCR, helped train those who should by all rights have had a peaceful life and not having to fight tooth and nail for simple survival. I suppose I am as innocent as anyone can be in these circumstances. There is blood on my hands, and I have no doubt I will be stained again before the end of it.

“In many ways, Nanami is my own legacy. She is a product of the Games like myself. She is my student, my pupil. Her well being is my responsibility, whether she believes that or not. But I am getting older, slower. If I do not try whatever I can to save her, then I have failed in the most important task of my life.”

He looked steadily at Lavan, “I do not know if you believe in fate, or any kind of higher power. There is enough horror in this world to warrant such non belief easily. But I feel there is a reason you have shown up now. I can not say what this reason is, whether it is for ill or for good, but I still have hope... Perhaps it is a foolish thing to base such important decisions on gut feelings... But I am. I can not say exactly why, but... It feels like the right decision to me. Sometimes, your gut is right...I pray it is in this decision.”

[Flashback: Rebel Base]

Lavan let out a low sigh as Old Man Sensei finished speaking.

"... Don't go soft on me now, you crazy old bastard."

Still, he had to admit, he was somewhat flattered by the old man. Lavan himself had enough blood and charred flesh on his own hands to be labeled a murderer, if not a monster, so he could agree to the old man's thinking. But... At the same time, the geezer trusted him. Almost immediately, without any preamble, there was some sort of trust that he had in the pyro, and it was flattering... And humbling. It has been a very, very long time since Lavan actually had such trust placed in him, and the only person that did was his own teacher, the Guru of the Northern Range.

These old folks had astoundingly great character, and even better senses. Lavan almost wanted to become such...

The age thing, however, turned him off to that idea.

This did not change the fact that he now saw the old man as he was. A kind old man who had been forced to do terrible things, but still remained atop it all without ending up covered in blood and nasty history. A man of will strong enough to still hope, still believe. And Lavan found himself agreeing with the old man fully.

After all, he himself had the same hope and belief that there was still good in the world. It was the only things he could truly believe in anymore.

"... You're insane, old man. Absolutely insane. No sane man would ever trust an insane stranger with such a task of importance, but somehow, you are. And you truly believe that I might be able to help, huh... Well then, far be it from me to fail the expectations placed upon me! Still, I think you're wrong in one thing. Fate... Destiny... Those are consequences of chance. It all begins with anarchy, with choice, with random chance, and all returns to the choices we decide upon. We make our own destinies, and fate is a b*tch. And for all I am... I am not a b*tch's b*tch."

He sat up straight then.

"I'll need supplies. A few guns, some ammo, and access to as many chemical compounds as you can let me have. If I'm to wade into warzones after that chicky-doo that you consider a daughter, I'll need tools to clear my own path. Just as a warning though, old man. However tantalizing watching your "daughter's" behind might be, I'm not one to follow. So you'll be pretty disappointed if you want a minion."

[Presidential Estate]

Connor gasped upon seeing Lily in the basement. He was wondering just what was actually going on, but he had no time to ask. He did not fully trust her… but he also did not have a choice, as she pointed out.

If Connor knew more about the power struggle between Gallic and Autumn, he might have smelled a trap… but he had no idea, and could not imagine that they would be helping them for any reason other than to genuinely help.

“Thank you.” Connor said, and he took Sarai’s hand and hurried towards the limo.

[New Vegas Desert]

Nanami paused, and she frowned. She was very good at stealth, but did not like playing games. The last thing she wanted to do was go and play pretend, but it did seem like the best approach.

“Alright. We’ll do things your way… but if this gets messy, I want you to run.”

The NCR soldier nodded, and quickly escorted them back to McCarren. After several minutes, they were taken to Peterson’s office.

Rica sighed, staying quiet the whole time and looking around for any sign of Kanna or Jason.

Sarai blinked, moving closer to Connor when Lily appeared. Soon they were being ushered into limos...."W-Why are we trusting h-her?!" Sarai whispered fearfully at Connor.

Chloe heard the question and shrugged her shoulders "I'm asking that myself right about now"

Despite this worry everyone slipped into the limo, in hope to escape.

The Strip

Melanie sighed as they approached the mono-rail, there really was no means of escape now. She slipped on, leaning against the cool glass and stared back out at the lights.

Kanna sat down across from the girl, staring at her daughter. While Kanna was fully aware Melanie was upset about having to come back to the camp, something else seemed to be bothering her.

"......So....Other than trying to get married...What else did you two decide to do with your evening?" Kanna asked, somewhat casually.

Connor climbed in next to Sarai, and frowned, keeping his hand clutched firmly with her’s. He had been terrified that he would never see her again. His heart was still beating a million miles a minute in his chest.

“We don’t have a choice right now.” Connor said to Sarai and Chloe when they mentioned trusting Lily. “I don’t like it either, but there’s no way we can fight our way out of here.”

He paused, frowning, remembering the Avoxes in the kitchen. He wanted to help them… he couldn’t just leave them here. He had to do something…

I can't see what you're imagining
-Flashback: Rebel Base-

Old Man Sensei sighed softly, then smiled, nodding towards Lavan.

“I never want minions. I want people who can think for themselves. It is the Enclave who want mindless men to do their tasks for them,” he said, “As for supplies...You are welcome to what we have, though it might not be as much as you want. We don't have an overabundance of many things.”

He still smiled, then paused, looking at the board, and moved a piece.

“And I wish you the best of luck, Lavan...”

-Limo-

“You trusted her because the alternative was worse. Far worse, believe me. Autumn would have tortured you, or killed you. If you were lucky, that is...”

Edda froze, looking across the limo. There was a dark glass divider between them and the voice, and it slowly slid apart, revealing Gallic, who was leaning against the seat and sipping something in a wine glass.

Gallic smiled at them, “Don't worry. I won't harm you.” The limo then started moving, leaving the estate behind and heading off down the road.

“If I wanted you dead, I'd have simply let Autumn catch you,” Gallic said, “Now then...What can I do for you four?”

-Cottonwood Cove-

“Right...” Hammah said, making his way down towards the camp.

A Legionnaire ran up to them.

“Halt! Who goes there?” the man called out, eying the two, mostly Nanami though.

“We're just traders,” Hammah said, “We came hoping to barter for some goods. What happened here?”

The Legionnaire paused, then sighed, nodding his head. Hammah had a high Charisma/Speech.

“There was a disturbance. It has been handled. You may enter the camp, but if you draw a weapon, you will be killed on sight,” the Legionnaire said, then eyed the Mister Gutsy. “Same for your robot...”

“Understood,” Hammah nodded, and headed into the camp, looking around. There were a lot of bodies. Some injured, some...definitely dead.

-Camp McCarren-

“What's wrong?”

Peterson walked into the room, looking worried. Samuel and Rica...the two fathers of the two very important people in this camp. Their clothes were torn, and they were covered in blood. In Samuel's case, none of it was his.

“...it's Galv and Melanie...they're missing...” Samuel said, “And the Legion might have them...”

-The Monorail-

“We explored one of the casinos,” Galv said, staying close to Melanie still, “Nothing much...”

He wasn't going to tell Kanna about the cannibals. Or the hot tub. He'd be more likely to tell about the cannibals though, if push came to shove.

[Limo]

Connor froze and his face turned white as a sheet. He was shaking and looked terrified as he saw the figure in front of them. It was Don Gallic, the President of the Enclave. The only time Connor had ever seen him before was during the Opening Ceremony of the Hunger Games…

“If I wanted you dead, I'd have simply let Autumn catch you,” Gallic said, “Now then...What can I do for you four?”

Connor swallowed hard.

“W-W-What do you want?” Connor asked, terrified.

[Cottonwood Cove]

Nanami stayed quiet. She said nothing, and kept her knife out of sight on her belt. She frowned and following Hammah slowly, with her arms crossed as she followed him.

“What do you suppose happened here?” Nanami asked to Hammah silently.

[Camp McCarren]

Rica frowned, looking to Peterson. If they screwed the NCR on this, it could be a big problem for the Rebels… but he couldn’t endanger Melanie.

“We need information about the Legion. Any chance you guys have any of their spies or operatives you’ve captured who could give us info?”

Lavan's chuckle was somewhat menacing in response to Old Man Sensei's comment.

"You have everything I need to transform myself into a monster of war, old man. I just hope that you realize exactly who you've just hired on to do the baby-sitting. By the end of this, you might not like my results at all, old man. Every single one of us is a monster these days..."

He stood up, stretching.

"But, as long as this is fun, then I have no qualms about helping out a bit. I'll grab some comm stuff from your people as well, gotta stay in touch somehow."

He turned around, strolling up to the exit at a much-too-casual pace as he dove into his pocket, pulling out a pack of cigarettes. Lighting one up with the tip of his thumb (which produced just the tiny enough flame to use as a lighter), he took a deep drag off of it as he put the pack back into his pocket... And fished out what looked like a piece from a shogi board, labeled as the rook or "Flying Chariot" by the symbol on it. He flipped the piece over his shoulder to Old Man Sensei.

"You've got me as a piece. When all of this ends, or when I quit, I want that little piece back. So better not lose it or croak before this all ends, you old fart. Just remember... Sometimes, I'll move myself. Might want to look out for the promotion to the Dragon King!"

And with that message, he left the old man's office, heading further down in the bunker to where they stored everything...

------------------------------------------

[New Vegas Desert, back to present time]

It had been some time since Lavan had agreed to work for Old Man Sensei. Most of that time was spent in one of the most remote areas of the old bunker in which the Rebels have set up their base, a spot which he reserved mostly to himself only and didn't allow anyone to visit. Well... Anyone but that guy "Spork", who ended up doing delivery and offered some help on Lavan's little project. The end result had the pyro giggling like a schoolgirl, and the scientist was no better off.

Lavan hoped the white-coat kept his word about not telling Old Man Sensei about what his project was and how much stuff it really decided to take up in the end. Three bikes worth of parts and some broken stuff from the chem labs were the least of what was used, but in the end it had all been worth it.

The project was what Lavan was driving now, a hyper-tuned and refurbished motorcycle with one too many pipes all over its back that signified that this was no normal motorcycle at all. It looked like someone had decided to take some sort of pipe junction and replace the entire back end of the motorcycle with it, making it look like a cross between some sort of horror-machine from a movie and some sort of super-modified racer bike with one too many exhaust pipes.

It ran like a dream.

Lavan himself had finally changed out of his old and mostly destroyed clothing into some sort of unholy cross between a leather-jacket biker and an insane scientist, sporting enough metallic bits and white coat-tails to REALLY attract attention to himself. Right now, he was careening down an old road in the wastes, the roar of the engine obscuring most other sounds, the actual speed of the bike much higher than you would at first guess from its type. It was one of the old bikes, an antique from the days before electrical engines, and still running on internal combustion.

The sort of thing that Lavan could actually enhance.

Finally, Lavan let the bike drift to a stop, the roar of the engine dying down as he looked around himself. Nothing to the left. Nothing to the right. Nothing behind him. Nothing in front of him. Just endless wastes and cliffs everywhere he looked, without a living soul in sight or hearing range. Not even the most remote of signs that there was someone alive around here.

"... WHERE THE HELL AM IIIIIIIIIIII???"

... Maybe leaving without asking Old Man Sensei for directions wasn't such a good idea.

"No f*ckin' way...." Chloe managed with a breath when Gallic appeared. She instantly clenched her fists, ready to break some necks even in this small space...

Sarai gave a little whimper, now clutching Connor's arm in a vice grip. She had seen Gallic on television so many times....And she was terrified of him.

The Monorail

"Why do I not believe that?" Kanna stated, staring at Melanie. It was obvious the girl was distracted by something. She also looked a bit flushed. "Are you alright Melanie"

Melanie blinked, looking to her mother and nodded "Y-Yeah, just a little warm"

"I'll see if I can run you a cold bath when we get back" Kanna decided.

Instantly Melanie couldn't help but to giggle.

Gallic smiled at the fearful faces in front of him, taking another sip of his drink, before placing it to his side.

“Now, now, Mr. Jackson. This isn't about what I want. It's about what you want,” Gallic said, smiling, “If, perhaps, you feel grateful enough to provide some assistance to me after receiving what you want...Well, I could hardly refuse such generosity, could I?”

He waved his hand, and a bar appeared to their side, fully stocked with...juice.

“Help yourself to something to drink. You must be parched. Excuse the lack of alcohol, I never like to touch the stuff,” Gallic said conversationally.

-Cottonwood Cove-

“I don't know...They got attacked...Maybe...maybe some Deathclaws or something wandered down here?” Hammah wondered, then paused. There was a broken spear lodged in one man's chest, and Hammah resisted the urge to throw up.

“I can't think of any groups that could do this...or would do this...” Hammah added, once he had gotten his breath back.

-Camp McCarren-

“That...is a possibility,” Peterson said slowly, “If it's just information, I can show you the files we have on the Legion.”

-The Monorail-

Galv blushed a little as Kanna mentioned the bath as well, looking away as he remembered the making out.

Ethan looked away as well, hiding his own smile. He knew the two were hiding something, and he found it very amusing.

Soon the monorail would come to a stop, back into Camp McCarren...

Connor frowned. He definitely did not like the sound of this. Gallic seemed friendly enough… he was smiling and offering them drinks… but Connor knew he could not trust this man. Don Gallic was the President of the Enclave!

“… You really expect us to trust you?” Connor said, finding his courage. “The Enclave put us in the Games. The Enclave murdered my parents just because I showed kindness to someone. And you ARE the Enclave. I don’t know what game you’re playing, but I don’t buy your niceness act for a second.”

Connor can be pretty brave… and stupid.

[Cottonwood Cove]

“It doesn’t really matter who did it.” Nanami sighed, crossing her arms. “It makes our job harder, but not impossible. We need to find the bunker.”

Nanami was officially pissed. It would be hard enough for her to sneak around the Cove without being noticed, but now the Legion was on high alert.

[Camp McCarren]

Rica shook his head, determined to get a meeting with the man Caesar wanted dead.

“No offense, but files can become outdated quickly. We’re talking about my daughter here… someone who is very important to the rebellion in Panem. I need recent information. Just let me talk to who you’ve got.”

-Limo-

Gallic stared at Connor, then tossed his head back, laughing loudly. After a few minutes it died down, and he turned his attention back to the boy.

“Bold words, young man. If you think I am the Enclave, then I should be able to do whatever I want,” Gallic said, “I should just be able to order Autumn to let you go, shouldn't I? Instead of having to resort to sneaking you out?”

He smiled, “I am the face of the Enclave, yes, the man most people think of when they think of it. But there is so much more that many do not consider. If I was to simply declare the Games to be no more, Autumn and his supporters would revolt. It would result in far more deaths and damages then simply letting them continue would, at the moment.”

Gallic sighed a little, “I don't expect you to trust me...But to be realistic. If I wanted you dead, why would I take the risk to get you away from Autumn? I am not such a petty man that it would make me feel better to do the deed that he wants to accomplish. Besides...Connor, you could be very useful. And I would think a man of your character would want his friends to be aided as well, and not left behind.”

Gallic took a moment, looking at the four in front of him each in turn.

“If you want, I can stop the limo, and you four are free to go,” Gallic motioned to the door. Of course, they were in the middle of Enclave territory...with very little supplies.

-Cottonwood Cove-

“We might have to take the raft...” Hammah said, pointing towards the small dock at the cove, “I don't think it's hear...But...I can...just on the edge, feel something, down the river...”

Hammah frowned. Out here in the Wastes, he felt his senses expanding with the horizon. The limits of his technopathic readings seemed to be growing as well.

-Camp McCarren-

“Since they were possibly taken today, then I don't see how talking with someone we might have will be of any assistance. His information would be just as outdated,” Peterson pointed out.

Samuel frowned. Peterson was smart, and it didn't look like he was going to give in.

“Still...sir...We want to try whatever we can. Any little bit of information may help,” Samuel spoke up, “It's our children. Our only children...”

That they knew of.

Chloe leaned back in her seat, arms over her chest and a frown on her lips. She still didn't trust this man, even if his words make sense. "Fine, let's say that you ARE actually tryng to help us, and you don't want our heads over your fireplace for escaping the Games....You still haven't told us what you want from us. Why go through the trouble of getting us out of there when catching us would make you look so much better on television?"

Sarai meanwhile continued to hold onto Connor and stare at Gallic silently.

Camp McCarren

Melanie stepped out of the monorail when it came to a stop, the girl looking around the depressing camp with a slight sigh.... She didn't want to be back here but for the moment they had no choice. She took Galv's arm as the group walked back, leaning into his ear. "Do you think we should tell our dads about what happened?" she asked almost silently. She didn't want Kanna to hear.

Connor did not trust Gallic in the slightest. The man’s charm and kind words all seemed oily and fake to him, but there was little he could do right now. They were in the Capitol, and if they got out of the car now, Autumn’s men would find them and kill them.

While Connor was convinced that Gallic had an ulterior motive for helping them, there was nothing he could do to prove it, and he had no other choice right now. His bad decision making had gotten them in trouble in New Vegas, it had gotten them mixed up with Castor; and now it had gotten them face to face with Gallic.

“… You asked what I wanted before… I want you to free all of the avoxes at your mansion. Let them all go free, and transport them back to the District.” Connor said, finding his boldness once more.

Hey, he may not believe Gallic, but if Connor’s going to be asked what he wants, he’ll be honest.

[Cottonwood Cove]

“We don’t need a raft.” Nanami replied. “I doubt they’d let us use their raft anyway. Come on, let’s see if we can sneak down to the side of the river. I can get us to Caesar’s camp from there.”

Nanami beckoned for Hammah to follow her.

[Camp McCarren]

“Look buddy,” Rica said, narrowing his eyes. “You might not give two sh-ts about our kids, but you had better start. For one thing, those kids are very important to the rebels, who you claim to be allied with.”

Rica paused. He was being his usual wonderful self, and it was probably going to lead to problems.

“For another thing… I’m getting my kid back. If the Legion stands in my way, I’ll tear them down with my bare hands… and if you get in my way, then I have a bullet with your name on it too.”

Rica’s speech skill is actually usually pretty high… but he’s also usually drunk, so…
