[Tribute’s Train]

Connor immediately frowned as he got a good look at Sarai. The black eye was noticeable even with the makeup, and he saw the cuts and bruises too. He could only imagine what her life was like, dealing with these sorts of things for so long…

“… Come with me,” Connor said, and he took her hand and pulled her off to a small room on the side. It was a cleaning supply closet, and the smell was overwhelming to Connor, but he decided to ignore it.

Connor’s hands started to shine with a soft golden light and he leaned closer to her, placing one of his hands over her eye, and the other onto her arm where some of the cuts were. The same warmth would hit her skin and start to heal her.

“… I want to help you…” Connor whispered. “I don’t think I can save myself, but I want to help you get away from this…”

Tribute’s Train

Sarai flinched when Connor's hand came over her face, but she stayed still for a few moments to let his powers work. Eventually she felt the pain go away and when she touched the spot under her eye is was no longer tender....She was still amazed he could do that.

She wanted to thank him but all she could manage was a tiny smile.

“… I want to help you…I don’t think I can save myself, but I want to help you get away from this…”

Sarai bit her lip. The idea of being free from all of this was all that she thought about....But she knew not to get her hopes up....This boy was a tribute, he was in no position to save anyone.

She took his hand and traced a few letters.

Connor paused as he finished healing Sarai. He was happy to see her wounds gone. He could only hope that she would be spared from getting any new injuries… his rage kindled back at the Peacekeepers, but he couldn’t do anything to deal with them.

When she traced the question to his hand, Connor frowned.

“I… I wish I knew,” Connor frowned. “Maybe… maybe if I could win the Games… I could help you.”

That would require winning the Games.

I can't see what you're imagining
-The Capitol: Holding Area-

Gallic simply stayed quiet, finishing his bottle of water and letting it drop. He walked over to the cell door, making a motion. A man appeared, unlocking it and letting Gallic out.

The black haired President of Panem then snapped his fingers, lights turning on, showing the rest of the holding area.

It was a large concrete bunker, stretching out beyond. In the distance one could see a single door, made of some kind of metal, built solidly into the wall.

“Deactivate all pylons in the free area,” Gallic finally said. He waited a moment, glancing to the side until he got a confirmation from someone. “Good. Let it go.”

Lavan would hear metal moving, a gate off the side lifting up, and then a roar.

A large Deathclaw stepped forward, coming into view, eying Gallic, the nearest person. Gallic turned calmly towards the creature, hands behind his back. The Deathclaw lunged towards him, jumping in the air.

Gallic's arm blurred, slashing forward as the Deathclaw jumped at him. It didn't seem to do anything, the Deathclaw hitting the ground, seeming to have hit Gallic.

But the beast hit the floor and continued, missing Gallic, bleeding from a large gash that had appeared on it's throat.

“Reactivate all pylons,” Gallic then ordered. “And clean this up. Make sure our guest gets a steak from it as part of his first meal here.”

He then walked off, not bothering to turn his attention back to Lavan.

When he was gone, a middle aged woman with blonde hair pulled up in a bun and glasses appeared a few minutes later, holding a clipboard, passing by the dead Deathclaw with just an ever present frown on her face.

“Mr. Gallic has informed me of what you've been promised,” she said, opening the door and stepping forward, “So you're going to follow me.”

She produced another key, then tossed it to Lavan, “This will unlock you from the wall...but it won't work on the ones on your arms, so don't bother trying.”

-Tribute's Train-

“I heard there was this one guy, a long time ago, who won without any powers...” Galv mentioned, “I'm sure we can do well...”

He paused, looking towards Melanie, then back to Rica.

“Ummm...Melanie, can I talk to Rica alone for a moment? I need to ask him something important...and private...” Galv asked, nervous.

“And I'll make sure nothing bad happens to you,” Hammah said to Kxs, smiling back.

“Great, looks like you two already know each other!”

A tall dark woman appeared suddenly, slapping her hands down on Hammah and Kxs's shoulders, grinning.

“The name's Ila! I'll be your Mentor!”

-The District-

“Hey, kid, wait up!” Cess yelled, approaching Jimi. Jimi frowned, turning around, staring up at the tall Cess.

“I'm 20, I'm not a kid,” Jimi answered, glaring at Cess.

“Ehhh...right...listen...I saw what happened earlier...can we talk? I might be able to help you...”

The Capitol: Holding Area

Lavan watched curiously as Gallic finished his bottle of water and commanded the lights to be turned on. Finally, he was able to see exactly WHERE he ended up, and grinned at the surroundings. Closed bunker, no escape, completely defended.

He had to give it to Gallic, the security here was pretty tight.

Until, of course, Gallic ordered the pylons t be disabled. Lavan blinked, wondering exactly what the man was playing at by deactivating the pylons, whether he wanted to see what Lavan was going to do...

Well, he wouldn't fall for it! Nuh-uh! Besides, he still couldn't feel his own power, so the pylons would not have been disabled for his area... Oh well. He'd have his chance to check everything later. And besides, they wouldn't have the pylons enabled during the entire games.

That gave him enough confidence to go through with his own plans.

"You know, shooting powers at me right now, even if I have touched upon a touchy subject, isn't all that great of an idea."

That's when Gallic told someone to "let it go". Lavan blinked... And again, this time in wonder as he watched a Deathclaw head towards them. His face split into a maniacal grin as he watched the beast move with a gleaming eye, looking almost... Hungry. Hungry for something, be it battle or the Deathclaw itself.

"Would you look at that. Big, cuddly, giant-clawed beastie. Heeeeere, kitty, kitty, kitty, come here fully!"

Unfortunately, the beast wasn't all that easy to taunt because it was already focused on Gallic. As it attacked, Lavan watched eagerly as it swiped at the man... And doubtlessly fell back to the ground, looking much worse for the wear.

"The beast goes down, and the crowd goes wiiiiild! Ladies and gentlemen, the king of beasts of burden, DONNY GALLIC! Now, please do visit our sales booths, we are currently in the process of emptying our stores of various important things and replacing them with useless trinkets! This is Strudel Von Wildebeast the Sixteenth, signing off."

As Gallic left, Lavan almost danced giddily in one spot.

"Yay! Deathclaw steak! Oh, oh, make it a haunch! The haunches are always the best part of the Deathclaw! Though I think I am sad now. I got to talk to Donny Gallic, and he's leeeaviiiiing... And now the day is all better because his sleaziness has decided to leave the premises! Yay!"

That's when a woman replaced Don Gallic outside of his cell, and Lavan carefully observed her. She was different. A secretary type, hair in a perfect bun, blonde, middle-aged... Possibly a GREAT pranking target if he could get away with it.

"Heeeey, looks like Gallic at least has the right mindset for that sort of thing. Greetings, milady, and a pleasure to meet you! Strudel Von Wildebeast the Seventeenth, at your service. Well, not like I have much choice in the matter because of all the pylons, the chains, the wall clips, the bars, the nasty, nasty bed... Say, you don't think Gallic spends his nights on that bed, do you? Because if he did, then that's just disgusting."

As a key was thrown into his sell, he caught it in his teeth (just because he could), and then went to detach the chains from the wall by using his teeth to turn the key instead of using his hands like a normal person. Once done with the somewhat long and arduous procedure, he turned, looking directly at the woman with the key still between his teeth.

"Doth thith do it right? Egh. I fink I broke a tooth..."

Dancing away from the wall, he finally let the key drop to his hands, and stretched, the manacles still holding his arms together, just not to the wall now.

"Well then, that's much better! Now, lead on, oh fearless epitome of the female species, and I shall follow like a happy puppy! Hope you don't mind if I nibble on your ankles every once in a while, I'm not all that house-trained yet."

Now becomes the the past in an instant — and everyone will eventually die! Destiny triumphs over human knowledge and goes mad! That is the way of things! I spit upon this frail, crazed, world! I spit upon the Second Law of Thermodynamics!

Tribute's Train

KxS looked up at the stranger woman who called herself Ila. She didn't know what to think at first, but one thing she was sure of was that no one could be trusted. She had to be prepared to protect Hammah from anything, even their own Mentor. Ila would have KxS' respect for now...but trust would have to be earned.

"Hello, Ila," she greeted with a short nod and a straight face.

The District

Shimera hid behind some crates stacked up on the street and watched Cess converse with the young man in front of him.

Wasn't this boy with the screaming girl earlier? She could barely remember, but she was sure. She could tell this nicely-dressed young man was rather distraught, obviously not having a good day.

"Hmm..." she pondered quietly.

Tribute's Train

Melanie frowned, but gave a nod before standing up. She wondered if the boy wanted how to plot to get rid of her with Rica....She couldn't help but to be worried....

"Of course" she said, not knowing what else to do. She then walked out into the hall and sighed.

[...]

"T.....H.....E.....N...............W......I.....N"

Sarai dropped Connor's hand and gave a little sigh...It was one of the only things she could do to vocalize her emotions. She then touched her face once more...It was smooth and no longer tender. She smiled at him.

[Tribute’s Train]

“True, there have been winners without powers. Usually they get lucky and the pylons are on just long enough for them to emerge Victor. However, the Gamemakers love to throw curve balls. If someone with powers is winning, the Pylons come on… and if someone without powers is winning, the Pylons go offline. The feeling of unpredictability really gets the Capitol all excited.”

Rica gave a grim little chuckle. He was not too impressed with these two. They were young, and neither filled with him with much confidence. Still, he had seen worse Tributes end up winning… and he had promised Kanna he could keep Melanie alive. She might have broke his heart and been part of the reason he was a drunken oaf, but Rica would try to keep that promise.

When Galv asked to speak to him alone, Rica raised an eyebrow. After Melanie was gone, Rica turned to the redhead.

“What’s on your mind, kid? You seem nervous.”

[…]

Connor watched Sarai trace the letters and he frowned. Her smile was nice… Connor could feel his heart beating faster, and his palms were sweaty. He suddenly wished he had met Sarai some other way… he wished they had been neighbors, or gone to school together…

He could easily see himself liking this girl… but Connor was afraid to express that to her, since there was no point having something happen when he would probably be dead soon. Though, Connor thought briefly, it would be nice to have a first kiss before his death… but that would be unfair to her.

“I’ll try to win,” Connor said, taking her hand. “I’ll try as hard as I can…”

But even as he said it, Connor was still unsure he could kill anyone…

[…]

As Melanie walked out into the hall to be away from Galv and Rica, someone approached her.

“Ah… Melanie.” It was Shinji. He immediately cornered her. “It’s sad we have to see each other this way… really, such a shame for you to be in these Games.”

Shinji smiled at her. “… But there’s no need for us to be sad right now. We still have a few days… I don’t know about you, but I’d like to enjoy them. Come with me, I want to show you something.”

Melanie, he may not have candy or a van or a nighttime newspaper, but you would be better off marrying Ryan than spending five minutes alone with Shinji.

Tribute’s Train

Sarai's smile stayed on her face for a few moments...Before she noticed his worry on her face. She took his hand and gave it a squeeze. His hands were warm and she liked the tingling feeling that came to her when he touched her.

But she wondered if he could actually win....She had been serving the Tributes all day and she had seen how many of them looked.

"Y...O...U...R........P....A....R....T...N...E...R.." she spelled, pointing out of the door of the closet.

Chloe was eavesdropping...Sorta.

[...]

Melanie blinked, offering Shinji a small smile. He seemed nice enough, but like everyone else here she would have to kill him if she wanted to survive...

"I want to show you something.”

She couldn't help but to be suspsious....But surely he couldn't hurt her before the fighting began.

"Okay, s-sure"

[Tribute’s Train]

Connor hadn’t spent much time with his fellow Tributes, but he knew a few of them were pretty tough, and Connor had never been in a fight before. He was pretty sure that he would not survive long in a straight up battle, but maybe he could use his wits – and his healing powers – to give him some kind of edge.

Then Sarai pointed out the eavesdropped, and Connor sighed, looking to Chloe. He opened the door a bit wider and looked at her.

“What?” Connor asked.

[…]

Elsewhere on the train, Shinji grinned and took Melanie’s hand, quickly leading her down the hallway, and to the end of the train compartment.

“It’s really a shame about all of this…” Shinji repeated, looking over at her. He reached out and cupped her cheek. “… Tributes sometimes make alliances, you know, to get them to the end. Let’s face it, you’re not very strong, and that ‘partner’ of yours doesn’t look like much. I’ve been training for these Games since I was young… I can keep you alive in there.”

Shinji gave a grin, and invaded her personal space.

“… I can offer you protection… if you can offer me something in return…”

Gah, it’s just like the days of posting with Burke.

Tribute’s Train

Sarai backed into the corner of the closet, as if trying to hide in the shadows. She didn't know Chloe outside of serving her so she didn't trust her.

"Oh calm down, I was coming to warn you that we have to back in our rooms in fifteen minutes, they're coming by to do one on one interviews." Chloe explained, peeking into the room and getting a good look at Sarai. "Is she your Avox?" she asked with a smile "I never noticed before but she's pretty, no wonder you're hiding in closets with her"

Sarai's face went bright red and she looked back down.

"What's her name?"

[...]

Melanie shivered a bit when Shinji cupped her cheek, but stood her ground. She looked up at him and listened.

Melanie didn't know why Shinji wanted to help her but he did have a point...She wasn't strong and she needed protection. She heard a lot of people did that, making agreements to protect each other until certain points in the game...What worried her was what he wanted in return.

"W-What would you want from me?" she asked carefully "You said it yourself, i'm not that strong"

[Tribute’s Train]

Connor frowned. He still didn’t know what to make of Chloe… she was blunt, and her Capitol attitude just reminded him of all the things he hated about Panem… but at the same time, he supposed none of this was her fault, and he could use a friend to survive these Games.

“She’s my friend,” Connor replied, somehow taking offense at the idea that Sarai was just an Avox. He then blushed at Chloe’s implications.

“… Her name’s Sarai…” Connor said, looking over to her, and waving her to come over. “… She comforted me earlier, back at the District Office… She’s really nice…”

[…]

Shinji just gave a creeper grin.

“Oh… I’m sure a smart girl like you can find something to give me.” Shinji said, and he laughed, because have I mentioned he’s a horrible person?

Tribute’s Train

Sarai looked at Connor wearily from her spot for a few moments before finally deciding to come over. She kept her head low but managed to steal a few glances at Chloe. The girl was pretty, albeit a bit boyish looking with short brown hair and a distinct lack of makeup and jewelry, but still scared Sarai. She didn't like most people nowadays.

Instead of greeting the girl properly Chloe leaned in, with a grin on her face. "So what did you do to get like this?"

Instantly Sarai stepped back, shaking her head. She didn't want to talk about that.

Chloe groaned and straightened up 'geeeez calm down won't you? You're rather jumpy aren't ya?"

[...]

Melanie may have been Melanie, but she was also sixteen...And could understand such implications of a teenage boy. She frowned and wrinkled her nose a bit...

"I...I don't know" she said, staring at her shoes. "I know how to cook how about I just do that when we get in the games?"

Connor immediately frowned at Chloe’s question. He was a little curious as to why Sarai had become an Avox, but he wasn’t going to ask her such a question. He immediately glared at Chloe.

“How can you say stuff like that?” Connor growled at her, and he walked over to Sarai. The boy sighed… he was so far unimpressed with his partner.

[…]

Shinji gave a little sigh. This girl was playing dumb and he didn’t like it. It didn’t really matter, considering he had absolutely no intent in actually helping her… but Shinji was going to try to have his fun while he could.

Besides, she’d make a good meat shield.

“Come on, you’re not that dumb… you know exactly what I mean.”

And he tried to kiss her. >_<

"What's the point in filtering what I say?" Chloe said with a shrug "I'm just gonna be dead in a few days anyways, especially considering I have a partner who makes friends with Avox girls."

Sarai frowned, hiding behind Connor.

"Don't let that boy promise you anything, he's gonna be dead too you know"

[...]

Melanie wavered when Shinji kissed her, the girl not sure what she should do...She didn't want to be here kissing this boy, but she also didn't want to annoy someone who could be a very powerful enemy...She she leaned in and kissed him carefully.

Even she knew this wouldn't end well...Perhaps she could let him down gently?

"Why do you want to protect me?" she asked, moving back and looking to him. She felt a little queezy...Perhaps it was motion sickness...Or maybe just creeper sickness.
