I can't see what you're imagining
-Rebellion HQ-

Old Man Sensei heard Nanami yelling. She was alive, and for that he was glad. He didn't know why she was so angry, but he would soon find out.

He hurried out towards Nanami, radiating his usual peaceful aura.

“Yes Nanami? What is it?” he asked. He looked over the girl. She was badly hurt, but still standing...

Galv stayed on the car with Melanie, not wanting to move, afraid that if he got out and let Melanie leave he'd never see her again...again...

Of course sooner or later Kanna would show up and probably freak out.

Nanami turned to see Old Man Sensei and she glared at him. She immediately stepped forward, and her entire body seemed to be shaking.

“… You already know what it is. You’ve known this whole time, haven’t you?” Nanami growled, clenching her fists. “You’ve known… who he is… who I am… how the hell could you keep something like that from me?”

[…]

Connor hugged Sarai back, happy to see that she safe. He held her close, and when she pulled back and asked, Connor shook his head.

“She was already healed… it doesn’t make any sense at all… but she’s alive, so it’s good…”

Old Man Sensei was quiet for a few moments. He could claim ignorance, but he knew that would not be the best way to deal with the situation. He decided the truth was the best way.

“I...suspected,” he said, after a moment, “But I did not know. I had a feeling, a clue or two, but I had nothing substantial. There were a number of other possibilities that could also fit what I knew...but yes, I knew there was a chance, that...that Gallic was your father.”

He stared up at Nanami now, shorter then the girl, standing calmly, “But everything I have told you wouldn't have changed regardless. If he was a complete stranger, your father, whatever he'd be, my advice would have been the same.”

The old man hesitated for a moment, then continued, “Whatever blood runs through you doesn't mean anything. It is not our ancestors that make us who we are, it is the actions we do. If your father is a monster, it does not make you a monster.”

Lavan, of course, was quite vocal during the entire car ride back to the rebel headquarters. He spoke of all things, both serious and inane, both relevant and not, and generally acted like a complete goof instead of someone who just managed to do some pretty bad damage to a penal facility of the Enclave. Of course, his sanity was always questionable, especially when one of the questions asked was about the advantage of defending against radiation when wearing socks inside-out.

When they arrived to the headquarters, Lavan jumped out of the truck as one of the first and was stretching and breathing fire by the time everyone else had stopped. He was PUMPED!

... And he also needed to see someone.

"Oi, Cess, where can I find the old guy around here? I need to give him a message! From an old friend, too!"

Nanami felt like someone had just punched her in the brain. Getting confirmation from Old Man Sensei made all of this real… it wasn’t just some horrible nightmare, or a cruel joke, or a mind game that Gallic was trying to play on her… it was the truth.

It took every bit of self control Nanami could muster not to attack the Old Man who, despite her attitude, she respected immensely. She was shaking now, and for a moment she believed her injured body might give out and she would collapse.

“Whatever blood runs through you doesn't mean anything. It is not our ancestors that make us who we are, it is the actions we do. If your father is a monster, it does not make you a monster.”

“That’s easy for you to say.” Nanami replied bitterly. “I was the face of the rebellion… the one rallying people to stand up to him… even though they shouldn’t, these people look up to me… what will they say if they learn the truth?”

"But ho-how could she not have a w-wound?...S-She was s-shot" Sarai mentioned, obviously confused. But she was happy the girl was okay....That meant they could relax and figure out what to do now...After all they were free...Kinda.

Sarai didn't know what free meant. She hadn't been free for a long time, since she was a kid. Now she was a young woman unsure what she was good for when she wasn't serving other people.

"We should get something to eat and talk about....stuff" Chloe said, looking tired. Like Sarai, the girl knew they needed to figure out what was next.

[...]

Melanie was quiet for a few moments before she finally looked to Galv. "I need to talk to Rica.....Could you-

"Melanie!"

"Mel!"

Melanie looked over to the door to see Kanna and Jason, staring at her with wide eyes. Instantly Jason came over, engulfing her in a tight hug. Melanie sat there and let him.

"Mel, what happened?! The medics said you had been shot!" Jason exclaimed, pulling back and inspecting the girl.

".....I was..."

Connor shook his head. He had never seen anything like what happened to Melanie’s wound, and it defied explanation… but considering he could heal people just by touching them, Connor wasn’t about to discount the possibility.

He nodded to Chloe. “Yeah… let’s go get some food and figure out what to do…”

[…]

“Melanie? Melanie! Where is she?”

Rica was making a lot of noise in the next room as he rushed around, trying to find Melanie. He was covered in blood still, having been too worried to even consider cleaning up.

He rushed into the room and spotted Melanie, Jason and Kanna. He immediately ran over to Melanie and dropped down onto his knees, looking to her and placing a hand on her shoulder.

“Are you okay?” Rica asked.

“Looks like he's over that way,” Cess answered, looking around and spotting Nanami and Old Man Sensei talking off to the side, “Though you might want to wait a moment...Nanami looks pretty angry about something.”

Cess wondered what it was...

“Then they will know that you could have taken to your father's side, that you could live a life of luxury, that you could have betrayed them...But that you didn't. You fought and struggled for everything just like so many others, that you were willing to do what was right over anything else,” Old Man Sensei said, “They will know that Gallic is a cruel man who let his own daughter participate in the Games, that if he is capable of such atrocities, what will he do to someone he is not related to?”

The old man sighed softly, reaching up and patting Nanami on the shoulder, “You can take what you have gotten from him and use them for good, Nanami. Never forget that.”

Galv stayed close to Melanie as Jason, Kanna, and Rica showed up, looking over Melanie. He wasn't going to leave her side, not now...not after all of this...

Nanami was still fuming and shaking. She crossed her arms, and wanted to shout out again… but no matter how angry she was, she could recognize that there was wisdom in Old Man Sensei’s words. She sighed, and flinched as he patted her shoulder.

“I… can’t beat him.” She whispered quietly. “I tried… I tried with everything I have… and I couldn’t beat him.”

Cess had issued a valid warning: Nanami was an extremely volatile sort and didn't take any bullshit. The problem was that Lavan... Well, he spoke the truth when he said he was horrible with authority, and generally tended to make his own was. So it was no surprise that he just gave Cess a big thumbs-up, wink, and strode towards Nanami and Old Man Sensei with a singular purpose in mind.

Though that purpose changed the moment he heard the end of Nanami's self-defeating whisper, which he decided to head off immediately. No time like the present to announce his presence after all!

"The definition of insanity is using the same method over and over and over again, and expecting a different result... And I use fire for pretty much everything. Go figure. Still, if it took everything you have to get to this point, perhaps time to start using whatever you can get, hmmm?"

Then, his attention turned to Old Man Sensei, his original target, and he stormed right up to the old man, squinting and getting right in his face.

".... Hmmm. Old man, projects a wonky presence, has something strange about him, your general description... You must be Old Man Sensei! Well, if so, then I have a message from an old friend that I was told to deliver immediately upon my meeting you, good sir!"

And without further ado, Lavan pulled his head back, and his hand came up, quick as a flash... Smacking Old Man Sensei over the side of his head.

It was an impossibility. Old Man Sensei was the de-facto leader of the rebels, a guide and powerful senior presence that always commanded and DEMANDED respect. Never in the history of the rebellion had someone been so disrespectful as to simply walk up to the man and SLAP him upside the head! And yet, here was that exact scene, playing in front of a lot of the rebel forces, Lavan being the instigator of the entire thing.

Said pyromaniac morphed his facial features into a caricature of disappointment with squinty eyes, and pointed at Old Man Sensei with a crooked finger, speaking in somewhat broken English as he continued.

"You no visit! Old Goats need mountain hiking for good health and fun, but oldest goat not visit! Not keeping promise!"

Nanami wanted nothing more than to crawl into a hole and forget the world for the next several days, or perhaps weeks. That plan was broken the moment Lavan made his way over to them, and she let out a small groan. She was quite sure that whatever the man wanted, he was going to irritate her.

“It’s not that easy.” She said in respond to him. She would have said more, but suddenly Lavan had slapped Old Man Sensei, and she gasped.

Nanami’s first instinct would be to punch Lavan in the throat and slam his head against the wall hard enough to make him forget his own name. However, Nanami was still in pretty bad shape and was only managing to stand here and argue because of the intense anger still flooding her body. In truth, right now, she was in far too much pain to hurt someone else.

As soon as Lavan hit Old Man Sensei and berated him for not visiting the 'Old Goat,' the old man's hand moved, whacking Lavan back over the side of the head.

“Well he never writes! I'm busy here, but he can't take five minutes to write a letter?” Old Man Sensei said, then shook his head, “And so you've learned under the Old Goat huh? I will be interested in introductions soon, but excuse me, I must tend to my own student.”

He turned back to Nanami, his face growing somber again.

“You tried to defeat him in combat, yes? You attempted to best him there...But you must realize, there is more then one way to beat a man besides simply killing him...”

Nanami decided to ignore Lavan for the moment, since Old Man Sensei did not seem too put off… besides, Nanami was quite sure that if he wanted to, Old Man Sensei could wipe the floor with anyone in the building. It was one of the reasons she looked up to him – even if she was pissed at the moment.

“You tried to defeat him in combat, yes? You attempted to best him there...But you must realize, there is more then one way to beat a man besides simply killing him...”

“Not in this case.” Nanami replied immediately. As defeated as she may have felt, she refused to give up on her goal. “Don Gallic deserves to die. After everything he took from me, after everything he’s taken from Panem… he needs to die.”

Nanami is a big believer in ‘an-eye-for-an-eye’… only in her case, she didn’t just want an eye, she wanted to take his whole head off.

Chloe led the group back into the Rebel's headquarters, turning into a large room that was being used as the canteen. There were a few other people sitting around, eating something that resembled stew and bread. Chloe quickly took a bowl, before pulling up three seats and motioning for the other two to sit.

Sarai took a bowl of stew but ignored the bread for the moment. She silently sipped at the soup, keeping her eyes low.

“Melanie? Melanie! Where is she?”

Melanie looked up from Jason's hug as Rica rushed in. Jason back up and let Melanie's father take a look.

"Mister Rica...." Melanie said with a tiny voice "Dad....Ummmm i'm okay....Though im not sure what happened..." She touched her stomach, getting a bit of blood on her fingertips.

"Melanie, we should get you cleaned up" Kanna started

Connor followed Chloe and Sarai into the canteen room and quickly took a hunk of bread and a bowl of soup. His healing powers always made him tired, and he was happy to have some food and the chance to sit down.

Once the three were sitting at a table, Connor tore off the corner of his bread and dipped it in the soup, and then ate it. He slowly looked up at Chloe and Sarai… something felt awkward about this moment.

[…]

Rica let out a sigh of relief. Melanie seemed to be alright… even though had been shot. Rica knew it could only mean one thing – she really HAD inherited his powers. It was a relief for Rica, who had assumed because of the earlier test with her hand, that she had not.

“I know what happened. You take after me.” Rica chuckled a little.

Oh dear God, don’t let her take after Rica TOO much.
