Armitage looks over to Sama. Armitage didn't say much. He never felt the need to say much. "I'll put my rifle away if it puts you at ease. But I'm keeping my service piece." He tells the employee. He then goes and stands in a corner of the restaurant, leaning against it and crossing his arms, watching for these tech-thieves.

DC; UNN Conference Room

The room was spacious...just as much as it had always been. But, now, soldiers from the various branches of the UNN was now arriving. Men and women from all over DC and some nearby towns were coming to hear what the Captain had to say. A number of them wanted to join the crew of the Rickkenbacker, and join the pages of famous historical figures. Others, others just wanted to stay on Earth.

In the back, leaning against a wall, was Malone. He wore a typical uniform, but also had a cocky grin. He was part of the Psy Ops program, and was considered the OSA Spook, by many, due to his odd nature and his assignments as a spy of sorts. He awaited for the meeting to commence.

[Diner]

Sama sighed and headed back to the back room. There, the blond woman in the suit from earlier immediately grabbed his arm and pulled him off to the side.

“The UNN was here? Asking questions?” Saber frowned.

“Yeah… they think the tech thieves are nearby. We’re going to have to be more careful.” Sama sighed.

“That android will be a problem.” Saber sighed.

[DC: Marine Barracks]

“Kid, don’t worry about my reputation.” Diego laughed heartily. “There’s plenty of people in the UNN who think I shouldn’t be allowed to command a small platoon, much less the entire military operation for the first manned mission into deep space.”

Diego gave a friendly smile. “If you want in on this, I can get you in. I don’t have much to lose, as it is.”

[NYC]

“I like islands.” Samus responded with a shrug. “They’re tropical, beautiful and I can be alone there.”

She didn’t actually miss Rachel’s point; she just didn’t care.

[NYC: Time Square]

A blonde woman in a gray jumpsuit was lying on the roof of one of the many massive skyscrapers in Time Square. She had a sniper rifle in her arms, and was looking out at the crowds of people from the scope.

“… Agent Sniper Wolf in position. Awaiting orders.” She spoke into an ear piece.

“Wait for the sign, Wolf. When you see it… take the shots.”

Didymus paused.

"Well, sir, if you truly think you could use some more political baggage on the mission, then I think it would be nice if I could get rescued from the fiasco they've generated around me. If not, then I'll probably survive-at least, personally..."

He chuckled grimly.

NYC

"Being alone isn't healthy, Samus..." Rachel said, disappointed that Samus held out in these terms.

"Islands are beautiful, but every person is a piece of the continent, a part of the main-and if a clod be washed away by the sea, the whole is the lesser for it." she said.

“Hey, it’s not like I’m offering you some great deal, kid. There’s no telling when or IF we’ll ever even be back on Earth. It’s not a cakewalk. And I guarantee you that TriOp will try to walk all over us at every turn and undermine our authority.”

He paused. “But it’s probably better than getting grilled by the House Oversight Committee, don’t you think?”

[NYC]

Samus shrugged her shoulders.

“We’ll have to agree to disagree on this one, Rach. At any rate, I’m on the mission, so I’ll be spending the next… who knows how long… on a cramped ship with plenty of people. I’m sure I’ll hate it.”

Didymus paused.

"I don't know, sir. Now that you put it that way, well...again, sir, if you think that the mission can use one more sack of political baggage that the new order wants to be rid of, then by all means feel free to dirty your hands trying to grab mine out of this political quicksand. Heck, I theorize that if they agree it will only be BECAUSE it'll just be throwing me into space..."

Rachel paused.

"We'll BOTH be on that ship...it should be rather fascinating, the most advanced of its kind. I'm sure you'll find SOMETHING to like..." she said.

“No, no, kid, you misunderstand me.” Diego said with a smile. “This mission... it's my ticket to redemption. Yes, there's a chance we will never return and those who criticize us might have a good hearty chuckle at our fate...”

His grin widened. “Or... this mission is a rousing success, we claim new territory for the UNN, prevent TriOp from making a mockery out of our service, and we come back to Earth with our so-called sins forgiven.”

He shook his head. “Don't get me wrong. Frankly, I don't give a damn if I'm called a hero or a fool... I just want to do my job and make a difference.”

[NYC]

“I'm glad you're going to be with me... and if it were just the two of us and Adam, I might be looking forward to this. Instead, it'll be the two of us and a bunch of strangers. A handful of nerdy scientist who will oogle me every chance they get but never have the guts to say anything... and a bunch of jackass soldiers who will hit on me every chance they get until one of them ends up in the medical bay with my boot up their ass.”

Samus... well, Samus is pleasant.

Didymus reflected on Diego's description of the mission.

"You really think it will go over that well, sir? All we do is explore a bit and establish a colony in the best case, sir. Can that really create such a huge splash?"

He paused...a chance to silence his critics and dispell this slander did seem enticing...

"You don't care period what you're called, sir?" Didymus asked.

"Bah, I care, but not as much. If I had to either do the right thing or avoid slander...well, accidental though it may be, I'd like to argue my current position demonstrates where I stand there...but I do think that if it can be helped, it would be nice to at least avoid ridicule..." he said, a tad softly...

NYC

Rachel paused.

"The scientists...well, yeah, getting ogled isn't always fun, but...um, at least it let's you know you're an attention grabber, right?"

Rachel was the kind of girl to attract a stare or two herself, but she was much more...optimistic...than Samus.

"...and if other soldiers hit on you...isn't that fraternization? At least, getting close to that? I'm sure you can probably have it stopped without beating anyone up, heck, that will only make the more...meatheaded ones...pursue even more, and that's the last thing you want, right?"

She really didn't know what exactly it was Samus wanted, but was trying to at least dissuade her from violence.

"But what is it you want, anyway? You think the scientists will be too cowardly to say anything, and that seems to make you mad, and then you'd be mad at other soldiers for making passes at you? So...do you WANT interest or not?"

“Is that all you think we’re going to do? We may discover some brand new element that can be harvested and used to create some new form of technology that betters the standard of living for everyone in the UNN. And even if we don’t… man landed on the moon and everyone in the world felt pride. This is the most ambitious journey to space since then.”

He turned around and smiled. “I don’t care at all what I’m called. They can honor me, they can slander me… either way, what difference does it make? I’ve seen heroes slandered, and I’ve seen villains treated like saints. I don’t really care what they say about me… I know who I am.”

[NYC]

“If I wanted interest, I wouldn’t have joined Naval Engineering. I’ve tried dating. It’s not for me… and I’d rather not discuss that sort of thing.”

Samus didn’t much care for this topic. She shook her head.

"To be honest, sir, I really have no idea what we'll do. I'm just hoping we don't discover some alien marker that will start some weird false faith that will include plots to turn the human race into zombies in some horrifying twisting of a resurrection doctrine..."

He paused, wondering where that came from.

"...maybe we'll do something great. Maybe it'll just be mundane. I'm trying not to get my heart set on anything going great, but rather just hoping that nothing goes too terribly wrong." he chuckled nervously for a bit. "And with all due respect, sir, man landing on the moon, for what it's worth, WAS as much a political move to outdo the Russians during the Cold War, wasn't it? Heck, it was basically a military endeavor when considered in political context..."

He paused.

"But at any rate, the eyes of the world, at least some of them, will indeed be on this mission, as I said, sir, if you feel like it's worth it to try pulling me outta the political workings I've got riled up against me then I would very much appreciate it, sir, but that's really your call, and I obviously can't promise that there won't be repercussions even IF you pull it off, sadly..."

Rachel nodded.

"If that's your call. Still, again, it's not healthy to shut yourself off from people, Samus...I've seen it..."she said.

[NYC: Time Square]

Samus was about to say something to Rachel, when something unusual happened. The jumbo television screen that was displayed on the outside of one of the buildings exploded in a shower of electric sparks and shattering glass. Shards of broken glass rained down on the crowd below and people began to scream, run and panic.

“What in the hell?” Samus called out, looking around wildly. Suddenly, another of the massive televisions in Time Square exploded in the same way – and Samus realized what was happening.

“Someone is shooting the screens out... but I didn't hear a shot...” Samus frowned. “It's a sniper! Take cover, Rachel!”

By now, the crowds of people were screaming and running all around them.

[…]

On the roof, Sniper Wolf was taking a few more shots. Her rifle was silenced, and over the sounds of panic no one would hear the faint pop as she squeezed off a few more rounds. She had strict orders not to actually target any people – she was just supposed to make a scene.

And she would.

[DC: Marine Barracks]

“You worry too much. I've had a bulls-eye on my back since I joined up. It's been a lot of hard work just to earn an ounce of respect from my peers... and no matter what I do, there will always be suspicious surrounding me.”

Diego shook his head. “... but if you believe that we're fighting for a just cause, then it doesn't matter what people say.”

Didymus paused.

"...I suppose, sir. To be perfectly frank, sometimes I have my doubts or suspicions about the UNN, but...well, I still joined up anyway...I guess it's just victim of its own political process like any other government we've got...I suppose I just really hate being in its sights, finally..." he chuckled a bit.

NYC

Rachel jumped as shots rang out, and nodded.

"Come on!" she called, and began making for a building...

“It's good to have doubts. Nothing is ever perfect when you deal with man. Even those with the noblest intentions can end up on the wayside. But, what matters is that we all do what we feel is right, move forward, and try to set an example.”

Diego shook his head. “The UNN is far from perfect... but in my experience, it's the superior choice. At least, it is with how things are now. Maybe someday we'll have a better choice, but until that day comes, I'm going to carry out my duty in the best manner possible.”

[NYC]

Samus opened her purse and pulled out a rather large handgun. She was not yet a renown warrior, but she did know how to kick ass.

Marines from the UNN did not react well. Several were already running about the city, trying to find the one using expensive jumbo-trons as target practice. No, command there was not pleased. Several soldiers began crowd control, keeping the panicking people at bay.

"The hell's going on?!" One shouted.

"Don't know! Find the one squeezing off the shots and take 'em out."

--

A few soldiers ran by Samus and Rachel. One stopped for a moment. "You two, you're with the UNN, right?" He asks.

TriOp Labs

"I need more funding." Grassi said. "I need a team. The CPU units won't build themsel-"

"We'll look into it." Korenchkin's eyes narrowed. "I'm afraid the board has a tight grip on the situation. I assure you it isn't easy to negotiate money over to our little project."

"But this is TriOptimum's finest hour!" Grassi retaliated. "I'm going to need money, sir. Otherwise, this won't be a realistic. XERXES is a strong AI and--"

"And he is already drawing controversy from those dreaded Source people." Korenchkin says 'Source' with disgust. "We do what we can. You just focus on programming him. But keep his ethical restraints as tight as can be. I'm not going to let any of those rumors about Citadel Station resurface."

Korenchkin spun around and left Grassi there. Grassi grumbles to himself. "Where's Martin? He should have been here by now..."

Didymus paused, reflecting on Diego's words.

"Yes, I suppose you're right, sir...the UNN HAS done some good, though I fear it may erode cultures, but...well, yeah, it keeps peace...just a single-world government can easily let power get to its head...but yeah. Here we both are, you're right, it does seem to be a good choice...just...well, I'm sure you understand why now of all times at least I'm voicing my questions..."

He shook his head.

"At any rate, sir, again, if you think the mission could use another politically sensitive crewman who will cast doubt on the mission and will involve a fight to get in the first place...well, then I'd very much appreciate getting rescued from my plight..." he chuckled a little nervously.

NYC

Rachel had found some cover, and peeked out to see what Samus was doing...and called.

"Are you crazy, Samus?! Get inside, then we can start searching!"

As the soldiers stopped, Samus nodded.

“We are!” Samus answered, flashing her military ID. She was just an engineer... but she was going to act like a soldier right now.

She turned to Rachel. “Look, you stay here and stay safe. I'm going to find the sniper.”

[…]

On the rooftop, Sniper Wolf was still shooting – and still avoiding hitting any actual people.

She got a call in her earpiece.

“Yes?”

“We're almost ready. Buy us a few more minutes, and then I'll be ready for the announcement.”

[DC: Marine Barracks]

“Hey, we all have our questions and concerns. For now, we just need to move forward and do our part.”

He smiled a bit. “Don't worry, you'll be fine from your plight. And our missions just might be a great success, and a damn good thing.”
