[Waterfront]

“I’m always armed.” Cherion noted, and she indicated a bullwhip on her belt.

For some reason, tough female lawyers all seem to have whips. Kinky.

Snake nodded, and accepted the spheres quietly.

[Waterfront Safehouse]

Skull merely nodded. “I thought the Japanese were our puppets.”

[Musashi’s Safehouse]

Nanami was a little put off at first when Marco leaned in next to her ear, but she was a professional and didn’t show it.

“That’s exactly what I wanted to talk about.” Nanami whispered back, now having to whisper into his ear. “Her mother has to be connected to the people after His Highness. I hate to admit this, but… I could use your help.”

"Well... That's just what I'm here for, darling!" Marco quickly responded with a little laugh that'd last until his likely punch in the face.

"So what do you want me to do, then?" he then asked, back to being serious.

Marco had a feeling he'd be dodging bombs or something, once he was told his mission.

[Musashi’s Safehouse]

Nanami raised an eyebrow. Did he just call her ‘darling’? She wouldn’t even allow her ex-fiancé to call her that.

Nanami grabbed the front of his shirt, it was supposed to be intimidating but she ended up pulling his face closer to her’s.

“Stop playing around! This is serious. If we’re right about Laila’s mother, then we’re about to be in a lot of danger and I need at least ONE person whose competent. From the martial arts you used, I’m guessing you’ve had training and that implies discipline, so show some!”

Nanami ‘yelled’ all of that in a whisper. Her eyes were narrowed.

“… I don’t feel comfortable asking you this, but I don’t have a choice. If things get too dangerous, I need you to incapacitate Musashi and get him out of danger.”

It looked like it was physically painful for Nanami to ask for help.

"I am quite serious," Marco answered Nanami, "It's just boring not to have fun with what you're doing in life, no matter how serious you are with things at the same time."

Marco then stuck his tongue out at Nanami. His definition of "serious" was slightly different than Nanami's.

"And I've got it, boss," he then answered the second part of her series of statements, "Just don't expect me to leave you behind after securing the prince..."

Nanami's experience and knowledge were also too important to lose, but even more so, Marco was not the type to want to leave behind anyone he knew and was friends with.

And he was quite hopeful in becoming friends with these guys.

[Musashi’s Safehouse]

Nanami narrowed her eyes at Marco. This boy was too silly, even when he was claiming to be serious. She was half tempted to rip his tongue off the moment he stuck it out, but that would probably discourage Marco from helping her out.

"Just don't expect me to leave you behind after securing the prince..."

“…” Nanami paused. Why the hell did he have to say something like that? “I’m a highly skilled ninja. As long as I don’t have to worry about the idiot getting himself killed, I can handle anything.”

"Good! Then I'll get to watch you rip their tongues out when I get back to help," Marco responded simply as a matter of fact.

"You may not be used to it with your occupation and duties," Marco then added, "but in a heck of a lot of cases, backup is helpful. I wouldn't expect you to come back as backup if the roles were reversed, but don't you dare expect me not to come back to try and help. That is just how I work."

There wasn't any change in emotion with the sounds of what he responded to Nanami with, but the unhappiness with the implication of that he would not be needed was in his word choice.

[Musashi’s Safehouse]

Nanami frowned. Marco seemed to be pretty stubborn on this point. He was pretty much telling her that he was going to try to help her even if she didn’t want him to. She understood the sentiment, and on some level she even found it… nice that someone would want to protect her.

Still, it was annoying. She worked better alone. “Back up” just meant one more person she had to worry about keeping alive.

“… Fine, damn it… but you need to understand something. Protecting the Prince is the top priority. If it comes between the two of us, you need to protect him. It could mean the difference between peace and war, and if you try to protect me instead of him I will kill you.”

Isn’t she just the sweetest thing?

"I certainly understand the situation, and whose safety is top priority," Marco narrowed his own eyes at Nanami, as he was not going to take her assumptions and let them slide.

"If I did not, I wouldn't have shown Musashi first hand, what I could to, to earn a little respect from him towards my abilities. In this game of chess, Musashi is the King, but in my position, I'm not going to just let the Queen go down without a care. But I'm not about to go sacrifice any pawns either."

Marco then paused, thinking about what he said, "...which is probably why I suck at chess, as I don't know anything aside from how you can't get the King killed, and how the Queen is the strongest on the field... Heh..."

Marco scratched his head. It made sense to him, what he said, at least.

[Musashi’s Safehouse]

Nanami paused, her eyes still narrowed and locked onto Marco’s face. They lingered there for a moment, before something unexpected happened.

It happened so fast that Marco might have missed it, but the corner of Nanami’s mouth curved into a slight grin. Naturally she flattened the grin out the moment she realized it was there. But if Marco’s really anything like Rumi, I’m sure he took note of it.

“… It’s impossible to win a game of chess without losing some of your pieces, and sometimes the only way to win is to sacrifice the Queen… your enemy becomes so focused on removing the strongest piece that they leave themselves open to Bishops and Rooks.”

Yes, Nanami plays chess. It’s the ultimate game of tactics and combat; is anyone surprised she’s good at it?

“… but I appreciate the sentiment. Thank you, Marco. If we actually survive this, I might stop threatening to kill you.”

Marco certainly did notice that Nanami very nearly cracked a grin, something that actually seemed to make him a bit happier than he thought he would be from doing that.

Though her answer to his comparison was a bit mixed...

Marco wasn't about to get into an argument about chess strategy, though, with Nanami. He had already established that he was not good at that game, and both he and the person writing for him don't know enough about it to make any additional commentary on it.

“… but I appreciate the sentiment. Thank you, Marco. If we actually survive this, I might stop threatening to kill you.”

"That'd be quite nice... And you are quite welcome!" he then answered Nanami, before smiling himself, with a slight laugh.

[Musashi’s Safehouse]

Nanami watched him for a moment. She still wasn’t sure how she felt about this American boy who had joined their ‘team’. In fact, she had conflicting emotions about this entire ‘team’. Laila and Adrianna were distractions, and their mother could be dangerous… and while Marco seemed competent enough, he had already proven he WAS dangerous.

“Don’t count on it. I said might.” Nanami reminded him, because she always has to stay frosty and she had already made the mistake of showing a slight second-long smirk. She turned and leaned against the wall and closed her eyes, not quite ready to return to Musashi yet.

“… One more question, Marco,” Nanami opened her eyes and looked back to him. “Why exactly do you want to help us, anyway? You realize this whole thing is dangerous. You could be killed, and even if not, you could be branded a traitor to this country… so why risk all of this for relative strangers?”

Coffee Shop

“...My dad showed up a couple days ago too...” Galv frowned, “He wasn't here for very long, but at least he made a little time to see his grandkids.”

"Unfortunately I don't have that same luxury" Kanna said with a frown, glaring at Galv, before standing up. "Come on Rica, I really should be going"

"At least come for dinner...Or maybe tea..Sometime soon?" Melanie asked with a sigh. She doubted it would work...But she did want to be able t. tell the woman that she would be a grandmother again. Melanie turned. "You all stay, Galv and I should go...We need to finish doing some things..."

Streets

When Blake turned back into his normal self Samara was able to come back out, appearing beside the boy and taking his hand. "If you are sure you wish to do it that way...." she said quietly.

[...]

"But this is New York, I decided I wanted to be a reporter because there are so many juicy stories in this town...Most of them not ending well! There are a lot of scary people out there...."

Joyce turned a corner and sighed, before taking a deep breath....She then yelled.

"BLLLLAAAAAKEEEE!"

Downtown Warehouse

Glass shattered and Crystal yelped, falling to the floor and scrambling behind some boxes. She didn't know what that sound had come from but assumed it wasn't good.

"What the hell was that!?" Crystal whispered panicked.

Musashi’s Safehouse

And Musashi, if you two run off without me I will stab you so that you’ll never have children.”

Laila blinked. She should have been distracted by Musashi's kindness and willingness to help her but instead she was distracted by his crazy bodyguard...Nanami was effing insane.

She then noticed that Nanami and Marco were whispering. She leaned near Musashi. "You know they're probably talking about you right?"

[Coffee Shop]

Rica sighed and gave a slight shrug of his shoulders. He knew Kanna was a very stubborn woman, and that had only increased with age. Still, he was sure that deep, down she did want to have her children and grandchildren in her life.

After all, if a criminal-insane sociopath like Rica could make time for his kids, so could Kanna.

“Don’t worry Melanie. I’ll convince her to stop by.” Rica said, chuckling.

[Downtown Warehouse]

“If I had to guess… I’d say we’re not the only ones who broke in…” Sama frowned. He quickly drew his pistol and turned to her.

“We need to get out of here, right away…”

Down the hallway, Three figures had appeared. The emblem on their arms was that of HYDRA.

[Musashi’s Safehouse]

Musashi nodded to Laila, and kept his voice low and his face closer to her’s. Nanami overhearing them would mean pain… lots and lots of pain.

“Probably… but this could be good. If Nanami’s all busy with him, then it’ll be easier for us to sneak away.”

He paused, remembering her threat.

“… But not right now. Let’s not sneak away this time.”

"Very well..." Didymus said, "...if you're sure that's a good idea to take to a gunfight...or a sorcery fight."

He hesitated, still feeling uneasy about taking them into this type of fight-for a number of reasons.

"Stay close..." he simply said. "Watch yourselves. Snake, you can try flanking if you'd like or something, though..."

"Our puppets?" the operative said.

"Far from it. They have their own designs just as Germany has its own...our interests happen to coincide. And by and large, we may even coexist..." he grinned.

"Didn't you see how this girl spoke in tounges mortal ears scarce hear? How she probed the depths of knoweledge seeking to enhance her power?" he asked, gesturing at Subaru.

"We have more in common with the Japanese than you may think." he grinned. "Now come. We must get these girls to the statue. Perhaps multiple rituals when we capture the others will...enhance the effect...yes..." he said again, almost muttering...

"A 'might' is better than nothing!" Marco was definitely a "glass-half-full" sort of guy, "You've gotta look at the positives!"

Marco then watched her reaction, hoping he was at least earning some trust from the ninja girl. Though talking about thinking positively with Nanami may not be the best way to do so.

Though she then asked him a question about why he even wanted to do this.

"Why would I want to help? Yeah, this is dangerous, but I'm used to that, a bit... I am an investigative photographer, and moonlight a bit helping out Train, who you met yesterday, with his bounty hunter like work... So I guess you'd say I probably have a death wish, just from that all. Heheh!" Marco began, sounding like his usual not-that-serious self. He then, paused however, and sighed. He walked over to the wall Nanami leaned against, and leaned against it himself, next to her

"But you already know my name," Marco then began again, sounding serious now, but looking straight ahead.

"Nice and Italian, even though my family's been around in the States for a few generations. Kinda makes it tough when the country your heritage is from, starts acting all stupid, and then people also with the Italian heritage decide to bring over the idea of a mafia from Italy, as well. But it isn't that bad, just can make for some tension, especially for others whose personalities aren't like mine. If I found a way to help stop the stupidity going on in Europe right now, and stop any wars from starting, to ease those people's tension, I'd want to do that to help. I have these skills of mine, so I should use them to help."

Marco then turned his head towards Nanami.

"So I found a Prince from Japan, as well as you. You both have that same sort of goal. Of course, that's for Japan, not Italy or Germany or whatever, but that doesn't matter to me, the where. I'm American, and I'm human, and I don't want any wars with a bunch of people killing each other, no matter where the people are from. That means you guys are my best ticket, to jumping in and using what I can to, to help mold 'history', so to speak, and maintain peace. That's worth such a risk, and I'm not planning on letting the rest of you guys, as well as myself, getting caught."

Once Marco finished, he then stood back up off the wall, and walked over to the doorway, making sure it was shut tight.

"So one question myself, for you," he looked back, "...if I may. Why REALLY are you following along with Musashi? And don't give me that duty crap in being a bodyguard. If it was just that, you'd have managed to find a way to keep him safe and out of the US, and you'd be happily married to his Cyclops brother by now..."
