[Fancy Meeting Hall]

“… I have a baaaaaad feeling about this.”
“Oh, relax. The room’s secure. The MP’s are all about. I doubt anything could get in.”
“… Baaaaad feeling.”

[…]

As Sama continued to falter on stage, there was a suddenly sound and the roof burst open! In flew the Iron Man armor, spewing steam high up into the sky around it as the suit landed on the stage and the mask flipped up, revealing Tony Stark.

“Ladies and gentlemen! I give you, Stark Industries best weapon to protect this city!” Stark struck a heroic pose and was prepared to absorb the praise and grin like a maniac.

[…]

In the corner of the room, Kimblee slipped into a backstage door, with a sly grin.

[Airship Station]

“I said I’d go along with it, but… this is the exact opposite of the message I’ve always tried to convey. Riding around in airships, dressing fancy… that doesn’t help me connect with the people of the slums.”

Alice shook her head.

“I said I’d go along with it, but… this is the exact opposite of the message I’ve always tried to convey. Riding around in airships, dressing fancy… that doesn’t help me connect with the people of the slums.”

Didymus paused.

"...I'm sorry, Lady Alice, but as I said, we'll land a bit away from the entrance. Lord willing, we'll slip in with a crowd and they won't even know it's us who used it...and also, face it: you're a Malvin. It's not exactly a secret that you live in a big manor. It's not something you need to feel guilty about...as long as you don't abuse it and rather use it well. In that regard...well, I didn't just rent an airship so that we could have a flashy time...a small room in the air will give us a chance to talk in secret..."

He was nervous. Alice may have picked up on it...but he did his best to hide it.

He led her in, and the clerk greeted him.

"Evening, reservation for-"

"You didn't say you were bringing a Malvin. The youngest and only single Malvin. Or I guess not single." the clerk asked, looking over Alice and grinning.

"Yes I did, when you asked, and she's not-"

"I thought you were joking. You...you hooked up with an aristocrat, Didymus?"

"Listen, man, it's not quite that sim-"

"And after what YOU'D been through and said?! Man, I thought I'd never see the day? So, the heart has laid you low after all, hmm?"

"Listen, I'm no traitor, frankly, Alice would rather be cleaning up the slums RIGHT NOW than here with me in a fancy dress, and I've been ORDERED to escort her to tonight's party-"

"So you rented an airship and catered a meal on your own dime on short notice, calling in SEVERAL favors to pull it all together? I know when a man's in love, brother. This isn't the first scene like this I've seen."

Didymus was VERY nervous now...

"Look, can we just go?"

"Platform 5. And milady...go easy on him, would you? Didymus here has had a pretty comfortable life, but he's an alright guy who's done somethin' good here and there."

Didymus paused

"If you would come this way, Lady Alice..."

He led her down the hall and offered an arm/hand up a small staircase until they finally reached a platform...it contained a small airship, only a few rooms, the largest being a small dining room/lounge with a table, two couches, and windows providing a scenic and panoramic view for the passengers.

"...here we are, Lady Alice...I'll instruct the pilot to land us a bit away from the party, if you like, then join you shortly..."

She hates me now, doesn't she...?

Didymus was doing his best to hide his concerns...

Outside

Jimi grinned, taking Kxs's arm, heading for the door, leading her inside...

Inside

“Excellent,” Cess smiled, walking along with Shimera, intending to give her parents the best impression. He wasn't paying much attention to what was going onstage. He was only here because he was trying to impress Shimera and her parents, after all.

Even a man in armor bursting from the ceiling wasn't going to distract him.

“Woah,” Jimi said, as he entered with Kxs, seeing Stark flying in with the armor, “Guess Hammah and Sama got it to work right...”

He turned to Kxs, then pointed to the stage, “That's Stark, in the armor, the guy I work for...I think my brother and sister are backstage, if you want to meet them...”

Now a good 10 paces in front of Cess and Shimera was a tall couple wearing typical formalwear. The man sported a fancy French mustache and a top hat while the lady had long, blonde hair; just like her daughter's.

"Hi Mom! Hi Dad!" Shimera shouted gleefully, her arm wrapped around Cess'.

The two smiled as they faced Shimera.

"Dear, the proper way to greet us is 'hello mother and father'. Do not forget next time," her mother informed. Although it seemed strict, she was gentle about it.

Her father just chuckled. "And who is this young fellow with you?" he inquired.

--

KxS looked up at Stark in the iron armor. "Interesting..."

She then turned back to Jimi and smiled. "I'd like see your siblings again."

[Fancy Meeting Hall]

Not far from where Cess and Shimera met with her parents, Zolf Kimblee was creeping around in the back. He was in one of the serving areas now, speaking to a waiter in a hushed voice.

“… Yeah, so when the final demonstration is over, we have a special bottle of wine for General Armstrong.”

[…]

On stage, Tony was giving a demonstration and lapping up the applause.

[Airship Station]

Alice did not speak to the clerk, other than the basic formalities and pleasantries of thanking him. However, as soon as she and Didymus were heading up the small staircase, she raised an eyebrow.

“Just what was that all about? He seemed to know you quite well…”

She paused as they reached the platform and shook her head. “Didymus, please… before we go, may I ask a question? It’s no secret that you have a deep resentment for the way things are… you don’t HAVE to answer this question, I won’t force you to, but… just what is it that happened?”

Alice frowned.

Airship

Didymus paused at Alice's question, without turning to look at her.

"...one moment please, Lady Alice."

He disappeared into the cockpit, and reappeared shortly, then, without speaking to her, went into a small room in the back. When he returned, he had wheeled out a cart which contained a pitcher of water, and a rather nice and fairly expensive (but by no means "aristocrat") meal.

"I always like this kind of food-food cooked and served with the intent of being tasty and filling the stomach, rather than looking fancy or giving off an air of belonging to one particular class or another."

He poured Alice some water, and poured some himself, and sat down.

"Lady Alice...I...was an up-and-coming student and cadet in the school. I've already told you how I begged God for a chance to serve Him and make a difference...but...Alice...please try to understand. I look at the aristocracy and I see a class that is too busy playing its own games of deception and dishonor and arrogance or fairytale society to actually HELP this city...it made me angry. But...the military police wasn't like that, by and large. I joined up, and worked my way to a comission."

"...Lady Alice, I learned of the potential and hope to do good that SO MANY of our fellow protectors share...high-ranking men and women, low ranking, so many...and with them, I...well, I'm perhaps getting off track."

"Faith, courage, and service true, Lady Alice. I try to live with those. I worked in intel, Lady Alice. I hunted down a movement that is more dangerous than even the most corrupt of the aristocracy...tried to, at least. But...you remember when I was accused of killing that child's "big brother" back in the slums? And I mentioned the aftermath of a battle?"

He paused.

"That battle was a surprise for us all. I was manning an office post when I heard an angry mob gathering-I caught word that they were marching on House Rodeila's estate. A huge mob. My unit and I...we were just an intel unit, not supposed to be involved in combat...but we had to intervene. We were the only protectors between the mob and House Rodeila."

He paused, thinking over that day.

"My men and I...we fought so hard. The mob was one of mostly impoverished slum dwellers or sympathisizers who advocated...radical, violent change. Probably incited by the movement I'd been hounding since I was commissioned...so we formed a makeshift defensive line, and we fought them back. It was a handful of us against literally hundreds. Heck, they had breached the estate by the time we arrived, we had to search it and drive them out, THEN set up our line...it was chaos. It was scary. But we did it."

He sighed, and his words seemed to come more heavily.

"I'm not proud of the fact we probably gunned down dozens, hundreds of people who just wanted a better life, but...they were going to butcher House Rodeila and they were destroying property, and I doubt that we prevented them from inflicting all their casualties on civilians...it was anarchy. Chaos. Evil. It HAD to be stopped."

He looked at Alice again.

"Alice, I...we did our duty with honor, courage, and committment. Faith too, for many of us. But...to spare you the details, I had an altercation with the head of House Rodelia. We didn't quite see eye-to-eye on the treatment of a prisoner. And so he used his influence to strip me from my intel position, and place me in the position of a bodyguard to a much maligned slum relief unit. But...it wasn't all him."

He paused.

"Lady Alice...I want to be completely honest and open with you tonight. Please feel free to ask me more about my little story...but please, be receptive to me, as well, and let me ask you and tell you things that have been on my mind."

He paused.

"And I'm afraid, but to show how open I hope to be...remember back in the church when I said I thought you may have been the answer to much of my prayers, and you joked about a girl taking that the wrong way?"

He was trembling now, and beneath the table his hands were clenching.

"...forgive me, but...I'm...not...entirely sure that it WOULD be taking it the wrong way. I mean, that's not what I meant, but...I think...perhaps what the clerk said isn't too inaccurate...this kind of thing isn't my forte, so I don't profess to be an expert in it, but...I'm afraid that in addition to my professional and ethical reasons for objecting to your upcoming marriage...I'm sorry, but I think I may have something of a...personal...objection...I'm sorry."

He looked away for a moment, then gathered himself and looked directly at her, deciding at least to have the guts to look her in the eye for whatever was coming...

“Hello, good sir and ma'am,” Cess said, nodding politely to Shimera's parents, “My name is Cess...I'm an aristocrat, and I met your daughter aboard the large airship party that had unfortunately been crashed.”

He paused, then continued, taking a deep breath, “Your daughter and I are...interested in each other, and we felt as though I should meet you two.”

“Alright,” Jimi grinned, pulling out his pass to get backstage, leading Kxs there.

Once in the back, he paused, seeing Hammah attempting to crawl into a small hole.

“...What are you doing Hammah...?” Jimi asked.

Hammah answered, muffled.

Jimi sighed, walking forward and pulling Hammah out, “What are you doing?”

“I'm looking for Colette...” Hammah answered, then paused, seeing Kxs. “Oh! Is this your girlfriend?”

“That's pretty cool, dad...” Maize mentioned to her dad Ethan, as they watched Stark's demonstration.

“...I could take it...” Ethan muttered.

Shimera's mother gasped, though not with fear or shock like most would assume. It was a happy gasp, something full of surprise. "Oh Shimera, I thought you'd never find a suitor!" she hugged her daugher, nearly squeezing the life right out of her.

"Mother, I can feel my spine digging into one of my lungs!" Shimera laughed before her mother let her go.

"I'm sorry dear, I've just never been this happy for you!"

The girl's father turned to Cess. "Nice to meet you, young man," he held out his hand for a handshake.

--

KxS blushed at Hammah's remark. She WANTED to say yes, but her mind told her to say no. Only, she worried that they would both tell that she was somewhat lying, so she kept her mouth shut about the subject.

Wait, did the blond headed boy just say he was looking for their sister? Maybe she got lost! Or maybe they're just playing hide-and-seek, it happens with little kids.

But she kept her mouth shut, knowing if anything, Jimi would handle this.

[Airship]

Alice stood in silence as Didymus explained the story, and as he admitted that he had feelings for her. She let out a small sigh and turned away, walking over to the railing of the ship and leaning on it, looking down at the city.

“… I appreciate you telling me about your past. I’m sure it’s a painful memory. Sometimes doing one’s duty isn’t glamorous. Sometimes duty means killing people who make bad decisions… and sometimes duty means being unable to save everyone you would have liked to.”

She sighed. “… and sometimes, duty means sacrificing oneself. Perhaps not always one’s life… Didymus, you’re someone I could easily fall for… if things were different. As it stands, I cannot allow myself to worry about real romance…”

She turned to him and shook her head. “I have to marry Roy. If I do, I can use my new status to effect a real change. I can bring some leadership to this city that would actually give a damn about what’s happening, and try to repair the damages that have happened. In comparison to all that I could do for EVERYONE – not just the aristocrats or the commoners – my own personal happiness is a small price to pay.”

She closed her eyes. “… I’ve made my decision, Didymus. I don’t expect you to agree, but I do expect you to respect that.”

[Fancy Meeting Hall]

“This, ladies and gentlemen, is the Mark I armor. It runs on a series of steam engines located throughout. It enhances strength, speed and allows for flight over long distances. A series of highly sensitive weapons all through allow it to engage everything from street thugs to military units.”

Tony Stark grinned. “This, ladies and gentlemen, is the future.”

[Unknown Location]

Far outside of the walled city of Hydron, buried within the scorched sands of the great desert sits the laboratory of Nikolai Tesla. Once considered among the greatest minds of human society, Tesla fled Hydron for reasons unknown to all, even his dearest friends and confidants.

Tesla’s laboratory was a terrible place. The great stone walls and floor were long since stained by the crimson stank of blood. Yet, human organs were required to power his greatest creation, the Daleks.

It had taken him years… but now Tesla had amassed an army of Daleks. There were hundreds of the nearly indestructible killing machines crowded in his underground laboratory. He nearly had enough… he was already confident their numbers and firepower would be able to destroy the Hydron Guard… but he needed to be absolutely sure.

He would only get one shot at this… and Nikolai Tesla wanted to be ready.

Hydron would soon be nothing more than a memory…

“… I appreciate you telling me about your past. I’m sure it’s a painful memory. Sometimes doing one’s duty isn’t glamorous. Sometimes duty means killing people who make bad decisions… and sometimes duty means being unable to save everyone you would have liked to.”

"It was glorious-as much as it could be, at least-for a moment, Alice...despite all the misery, when the smoke cleared and the shooting had stopped, for a moment...I could taste it. My unit and I-an intel unit, not even a regular combat team, pressed into service and triumphing against a barbaric mob-were the heroes of the hour. For a moment. A fleeting moment. But...yeah. I had to kill people who had made, who WERE making, very bad decisions...and I couldn't save everyone, either..."

Soldier's talk. Police talk. The talk of protectors.

He looked at Alice quietly for a moment.

“… and sometimes, duty means sacrificing oneself. Perhaps not always one’s life… Didymus, you’re someone I could easily fall for… if things were different. As it stands, I cannot allow myself to worry about real romance…”

Didymus' heart skipped a beat, especially at that "easily fall for" part-but he heard what she said after that...

"The circumstances...?"

She spoke of marrying Mustang.

"Alice, don't you see? What new status will you gain? A faster promotion rate? Contacts in the military? Lady Alice, I have friends in the military I can call up and-I've been TELLING you that I've worked above and below so many who want to do good...marrying Mustang will not gain you status, Lady Alice, it will gain HIM status...and it will diminish BOTH of you in the public's eye. He's what, 10 years older than you?"

Didymus took a deep breath, and sipped some water from his glass.

"Lady Alice, I...it will be clear that it's just a loveless, policital marriage. Especially when Mustang becomes such a vehement supporter of Section III. Sooner or later, it will get out. Especially if you can't STAND the man. And when it does, the notion that you actually ARE anything more than a grubbing politician willing to violate even the sanctity of marriage for political gain will be that much more difficult to prove."

He calmed himself.

"I'm sorry, Lady Alice, but please try to see the flipside of this...if you REALLY want to be this city's white knight...if you REALLY want to live up to all that stuff that I talked about at the church, if you REALLY want to use your influence as an aristocrat to make everything better for EVERYONE...then a marriage with Mustang is best avoided. If you want people to trust that you really are something different...you have to act like it. You have to do your best to present an unimpeachable image...not lie, of course, heck, that's why you shouldn't marry Mustang..."

He sighed.

"Please, Lady Alice, weigh my words rationally and without bias in your mind, if you can...I really do think that there's a reason I was sent to you-a REASON that demonstrating faith, courage, and service true landed me this "shameful" post...is hurrying into an immediately suspect and loveless marriage really the best thing to do? I know that you're willing to sacrifice so much for the greater good, that's why I'm speaking to you like this...because that's too precious a quality, especially when combined with your position, to just throw it away or diminish it rashly..."

He walked up beside her, and looked her in the eyes.

"I'm...sorry to go off like this, Lady Alice...but...well, you know my position."

He then clicked his heels and was at attention before her.

"But you are correct. I have voiced my opinions for your consideration, I ask again that you continue to reflect on them. But as you state, it is your decision, and I shall respect it, whatever it is, at the end of the day."

He paused, and eased his stance.

"But with that said...come, Lady Alice. Let us eat. I DID pay for this meal with my own money and favors people said they owed me anyway...I try not to play debt and credit with acts of charity, but people still like to help people who helped them, even if they only profess that they just want to be "even"."

He still stood next to her.

"And...though I confess, it concerns me to feel and speak this way to an engaged woman, but...I am honored and pleased, at least for tonight, to have your company and be your escort, Lady Alice."

“No, Didymus… you don’t understand all the pieces at play here.” Alice said, shaking her head. “If I want to sit on the council seat for the House Malvin and obtain the power to actually DO something, then I need support from the military. Mustang has the connections that I need to make it happen. Without his support, I have no hopes of being chosen over my aunt.”

She shook her head. “I KNOW that there’s a lot of truth in what you’re saying… but my image does not matter. What people think of me does not matter… all that matters is that I obtain that seat. From there, I will have the ability to affect a real change, the kind of change Hydron needs… I do not expect to lead this city. But I do hope to create a path so that someone can… I have to give the example, but I cannot hope to defeat the system from the outside.”

Didymus paused.

"I...you're finally realizing that you can try for a seat on the council, and not just leave it at Section Three..."

He sat down, and thought.

"...I think your image DOES matter...and that House Malvin is powerful enough that, though you WILL have to play the game, you'll be able to do it by your own rules...and I would argue that I could get you in touch with a number of military men who would support you, but...again, this is a risky, confusing, dangerous game. But...perhaps you could let me see what I can do first, before you take his hand? Again, I really do believe what you can do will be limited if people see you as just another aristocrat in a political marriage...you can set the example by avoiding that."

He sighed.

"I'm glad you're seeing a bigger picture, even if I still disagree with your plan and think it may be an unnecessary risk...but...it is your life and your decision, and perhaps I'm wrong, perhaps I'm right-I just don't want to see any of your potential wasted...but it's your decision, if I really can't persuade you to try a different approach..."

He was quiet for a moment, his mind going over all sorts of thoughts.

"But again, for what it's worth...I am still honored and glad to be your escort this evening, Lady Alice. Now please, sit and eat...this food is coming out of my own pocket as is..."

He lit the candles on the table.

"Or would you prefer these out?"

She shook her head. It was sweet that he was trying to protect her from throwing her life away with Mustang… but he really didn’t understand.

“Didymus, if things were different I could try things your way, but… it’s not as simple as all of that. You forget that my aunt is not only actively sitting ON the council that runs this city, but she is also a highly respected and decorated general. You may have contacts who could help, but have you stopped to consider all sides?”

She sighed. “I have already accepted Mustang’s proposal. He wants to marry me for the power that comes with being in House Malvin. If I break it off now, the same contacts Mustang would have used to help me he could easily use against me… between that and my aunt’s power, I would no chance.”

She smiled a bit. “I’m sorry. I know you’re trying to save me from this… but I’ve already made my decision, and it’s too late to change that. Now, no more talk of this… I prefer to enjoy this meal before we arrive at the party.”

Didymus hesitated, weighing Alice's words.

"...again, my own contacts could be of some use even IN that situation...but one of the last things we need is a disunified protection force...and even if you said no, he'd be able to start a scandal, perhaps, since you first said yes, but that's still preferable to a sham marriage, I think, particularly since you could even turn a potential scandal around, but..."

He sighed.

"...you've got quite an interesting path in life one way or another, it appears, Lady Alice."

“I’m sorry. I know you’re trying to save me from this… but I’ve already made my decision, and it’s too late to change that. Now, no more talk of this… I prefer to enjoy this meal before we arrive at the party.”

"With respect, Lady Alice, it's not ultimately about you. If I truly thought that marrying Mustang would lead to the brightest future for Hydron...I would urge you to do it. Or at least, I pray I would...which means it's not ultimately about me, perhaps, as well...heh."

He chuckled a bit.

"Again, Lady Alice, I've known you for two weeks. I'm not an expert on "true love", so this could just be a passing fancy, I confess...and frankly, save for your own statements to the contrary, I may never have been so arrogant as to assume I could attract YOUR fancy, but..."

He paused.

"...I'm sorry, I'm rambling and saying all the wrong things, aren't I?" He stood up, and filled Alice's water glass, and began dishing out some food to her, and himself.

When he was finished, he sat down.

"This stuff is some of my favorite-like I said, food made to taste good and served in portions large enough to fill the stomach-not look nice and leave one famished."

He raised his water glass.

"To tonight, Lady Alice? And to the coming months, that all that unfolds, does so for the best, Lord willing. Something like that, at least?"

He was grinning a bit, now.

Colette had in fact wandered off in the party, somehow managing to find her way through the crowd were she was now dancing with some older gentleman who could be her grandfather. The old man wasn't sure where the little girl came from, but he didn't have the heart to tell her no when she asked him to dance.

So now Colette was 'dancing', which actually meant she was going in circles, and pulling the old man along.

"Big brother!" Colette suddenly exclaimed, noticing Hammah not too far away. She waved happily at him as she spun around to make her dress fluff out.

[...]

"You sound so confident" Melanie said quietly, leaning forward and hugging him. She found herself swaying a bit to the music...Until it stopped, and everyone was watching Tony Stark and his newest invention.

Melanie frowned a bit...It looked a bit scary...

[...]

"You really think those two being together is a good thing?" Kanna asked, glaring at Samuel a bit as she took a sip of her wine. "This all has gotten way out of hand..."

Suddenly the crowd's attention was on the suit....

"Amazing..." Kanna breathed, suddenly distracted. She had to have a piece of THAT deal.

Kanna was a business woman before a mother. Wonderful isn't it?

[...]

"W-Wait Maize-" Jason stated, watching the girl disappear into the crowd. The boy gave a sigh and turned around-

To see Erin. Right in his face. Very close.

Suddenly Jason's face became very red and the boy stumbled back a bit to gather his bearings. "E-Erin!" he exclaimed, noticing how pretty the girl looked in her dress....Oh geez. "What are you doing here?"

Suddenly the roof burst open and Jason's eyes went from the girl to the suit, a look of amazement in his eyes. "Wooooooah! Now THAT'S an invention!"

Erin probably wouldn't be pleased with the lack of attention.

[...]

Crystal stood backstage, watching Sama from a spot which she couldn't be seen. She was debating going out and helping him stall- but then the roof burst open, gathering everyone's attention.

Crystal rushed out, coming beside Sama "The suit!"
