GRAPPLING HOOK!

Narroh Manor

Kanna was annoyed and worried about Samuel's words, knowing he was right with what he said...

Kain hadn't been back since that night she decided to call Samuel for protection. And for once she was actually MAD about that. Perhaps he knew Kanna had hired someone? Or perhaps he was plotting something worse than a personal attack.

Kanna was afraid...But she wasn't going to show it.

"He'll be around" the woman said, sipping her own cup. "But at the moment we have more pressing problems....Like your son."

While Samuel had been around she also noticed that Galv and Melanie had been getting closer...Well they had been convinced that they would marry soon enough so it was partly Kanna's fault.

[...]

"In my room!" Melanie called out, hearing her friend from not too far away. She was standing in her room, one of her attendants tying her dress' corset up tightly in the back.

Hydron Streets

For once Jason wasn't hovering around his little sister (also known as protecting) instead he was standing in front of a house....A girl's house.

For the last two weeks the boy had been loitering in front of Maize's home, which he found after their little rendezvous at his own home...But unfortunately he still hadn't been invited in...

So instead he was standing outside, trying not to look sketch.

Hydron Park

The last few weeks had been rather busy, her brothers and new friends hard at work with Mr. Stark creating something that she didn't totally understand. The girl tried to help when she could but at times she found herself more in the way than anything else.

Which is why she was enjoying today. The girl was out at a nice park beside their apartment, swinging on an old swing and being pushed by Crystal.

Her brothers were still pretty busy so Crystal offered to take the girl out and enjoy the park.

[The Telephone Company]

Deep beneath Hydron's streets lurks a secret society. Eleven men of incredible genius and scientific skills. Engineers every one of them, and all practically unrivaled in their skill. What separated these eleven men from the people living above them was their unique goal.

The group known as 'the Telephone Company' was formed because of an incident that occurred during Hydron's founding. An incident few in the public, and even few in the military-police, knew about.

“... Have you studied the remains of the machines found on the airship, and at the warehouse in the slums, Three?”

A gray haired old man sat in a large chair, looking to another man who had curly blond hair and wore a rather fancy jacket and frilly shirt.

“Yes.” Three replied, shaking his head. “I'm afraid there's no mistaking it... these DALEKs, as they're called... there's only one engineer I know who could build something so advanced. It has to be the work of Tesla.”

One sighed, leaning back. “... Tesla IS alive. Then this city will need us...”

[The Library]

Lurking among the many shelves of books was a tall man with short hair and a leather jacket. It was the mysterious man known only as the number Nine who had been in the closed down train yard two weeks earlier.

He hadn't seen any of the people he met that night since that night.

[Church]

“... Wow.”

Alice stood, now awkwardly shuffling her feet. She wasn't quite sure where to begin. She was not used to someone being so... open... about so many personal things.

In her unit, she was the leader. She was the commanding officer, and she was strict when it came to her duties. Her subordinates trusted her, but few ever wanted to speak frankly around her since she usually told them to suck it up and get back to work.

Outside of her unit, she was a Noble. She never had open conversations with her sisters, or her father, and especially not her aunt. Likewise, no one else ever had such frank or candid statements around her out of fear of her lineage and power.

Only two people had ever really opened up to her before... one was a poor priest from the slums who implored her to help between his cigarettes, and the other was her superior officer who spoke of the power of change, if he just had the chance.

Now... Didymus was confiding a lot in her, almost all of it deeply personal.

“... So you're saying I'm the answer to your prayers? A girl could take that the wrong way, Lieutenant.”

Alice gave a weak smile as she made the joke. She had to say something to lighten things up. She sighed, and walked over, sitting down on one of the pews.

“... Sorry. You're being serious and I'm cracking jokes... I... Didymus, I understand what you're saying, but... the only way I could do any of the things you're talking about... it's to embrace my blue blood. To utilize the power I was given because I was born a Malvin. The truth of the matter is, I don't want that... I think it's completely STUPID that anyone pays tribute to me because of my last name. If I use what power and influence I have to effect a change, even if it helps this city, it's only a temporary cure... eventually there will be other nobles who come to power, and as long as we keep the system of nobility, we'll have good times with good people, and bad times again when corrupt people return.”

Alice shook her head. “The only way we fix anything is... is by dissolving the idea of the nobles council... by having elected officials... a council made up entirely from elected officials...”

She looked Didymus dead in the eyes. “I've thought about proposing it. I could... I could assert my rights as a Noble... the Malvin house has great power... but Didymus, if I propose such a notion, the council would have to vote on it. It would never pass... and I'd probably be assassinated just for suggesting it.”

She sighed. “I... I don't know that I'm the answer you and the rest of Hydron is looking for.”

[Hydron Park]

Huffing and puffing as he attempted to catch his breath, Sama arrived at the park where he knew Crystal had taken Colette. He was making a complete mess of himself as he stumbled into the park and fell down near the swing set, still panting.

“C-Crystal! Co-Colette!” Sama looked up at them. “It's finished! The suit! It's really finished!”

Sama jumped back to his feet. “Tony looked at it, and he loves it! We did it... and he's unveiling it tonight at a big fancy party and we're all going!”

“... So you're saying I'm the answer to your prayers? A girl could take that the wrong way, Lieutenant.”

Didymus chuckled, but he clearly appeared sheepish.

...I...shoot, I...yeah, I suppose I've got to admit it now: I've started developing a crush on an engaged girl...blast...

“The only way we fix anything is... is by dissolving the idea of the nobles council... by having elected officials... a council made up entirely from elected officials...”

Didymus looked surprised, even worried.

"Malvin, I realize what you're saying, but...are you sure? That's..."

He sighed again.

"...there IS merit to that argument, that people should be equals in government and the common man should have a voice...but you really think that the only way to fix anything is to totally abolish the aristocratic council? The weakness of an aristocracy is that there is little recourse when its members are corrupt, save for other members. The weakness of a democracy is that there's no recourse when the PEOPLE are corrupt...in a democracy, the man who says most often and in the loudest voice what the greatest number of people want to hear is selected to lead. Which isn't necessairly a good thing. Sure, you'll get change...but that doesn't guarantee success, and not all change is good...it is a gambit to say the least..."

He paused.

"I've always said that I don't mind the aristocracy, Malvin, just the people in it." he chuckled. "YES, what I suggest involves you embracing your blue blood. But don't you see? Someone with that kind of attitude-the kind that doesn't think that they're better than everyone else because of their family name-is just the person we NEED on the council. Perhaps it WOULD be a temporary solution if you used what influence you had to do something good...but Malvin...your house is one of the most powerful in Hydron. And it even has a more or less respectable, if not upright honorable, history...and there are good people in the military, in civil service, who are waiting. Waiting for SOMEONE in the council they can rally around. I've seen them. I've worked with them. Worked over them. Under them."

"...as for it being a temporary solution, again, I actually think you can change a lot, even if you DIDN'T institute democracy. Maybe it's too much power for one person or family to have, but...you're heiress apparent. You will be able to direct your household. And one way or another, face it, you can change the government, you can make it actually care for the people's problems again, even IF it remains an aristocracy. You can not only do good in your time, but Malvin, as your house head, I don't know how it works, but..."

He paused again.

"...frankly, Malvin, you can make sure that virtue survives to the next generations of your family. Pardon me for saying so, but if you ask me, if you get on the council, strive to do right, get married to someone-Mustang, maybe, or SOMEONE, who also wants to and strives to do right, you can have kids, teach them to do right, make sure they teach THEIR kids to do right...and, well Malvin, your family's been keeping a more-or-less honorable face for the past few centuries at least, right? No reason for that to stop now, or anytime soon. You could propagate a line of nobles, who are interested in BEING noble, that will continue for as far as we can see. Combine that with House Malvin's influence...politics may change its position, but if you set an example, gather power, and encourage noble behavior in the council yourself...have faith and persevere...than the aristocracy itself may change, as other families try what you're encouraging. Even if they don't, you can still do your part to set and keep House Malvin on the straight and narrow..."

He shrugged his shoulders.

"...and who knows, maybe then democracy can be willingly implemented by the council. At any rate, I agree, to suggest the immediate dissolution of the aristocratic council would be a bad idea. Even IF democracy is the best way for Hydron...Malvin, there are radicals in the slums, and not just there, but infiltrating other rings of the city, who would LOVE that. They would take advantage of it to just get THEMSELVES into power riding a wave of public sympathy, ignorance, and passion. And then...they would institute something far worse than the aristocrats have ever been. Even if they wouldn't...I suppose I just subscribe to the philosophy that political changes of this such a caliber as that should be slow, deliberate, careful."

He looked at her again, in eyes.

"And yes, you may well be the target of assasins for suggesting radical moves. But it's not just that. Malvin, if you want to do good on the council, heck, even now, your family has enemies and the attack on your manor two weeks ago shows that. But..."

He sighed, wondering if this was right.

“I... I don't know that I'm the answer you and the rest of Hydron is looking for.”

"Malvin, you were BORN an aristocrat, selected to head your family's house by your father. People don't control what they're born into, I don't know your beliefs, but...you were born into your position. Then you learned to seek righteousness and be humble. THEN, a priest who seeks to do God's work in the slums trusts you and urges ME to guard your life with mine. I pray here for years to serve God, do something good, get a sign that there's some HOPE for this city, on a political level, even...and...then, I...well, as a result of upholding my honor, I get forcefully transferred away from a position in intel and command, to be your bodyguard..."

He paused there, reflecting...but continued.

"...I think it may be reasonable to think that maybe He's trying to tell you something. That may be just me, but...frankly, Malvin, what choice do we have? Stark? He gets wasted and makes an idiot of himself every other day. The Narrohs? Their mother LIVES for "the game" that you rightly despise, even IF playing it will be necessary, their children don't seem to have a knack for this. The revolutionaries? ...those are the people I fear more than the aristocrats."

He chuckled.

"Malvin, maybe you AREN'T the answer we've been hoping and praying for in politics...but I really don't see a better one, not anytime soon...and part of why I've taken you hear, and expressed just what I think you can do, just what I think you may be...is because I want you to be careful. Please, don't act too rashly like you did...please...so much more could be at stake here than just you, or I..."

He paused.

"As for assassins, Malvin..." he paused. "...I've been assigned even by the military as your bodyguard. And I think it might be painfully clear now what I think of my task, and why I have it. Anyone who would harm you, and the potential you represent...shall have to deal with me, for whatever comfort that's worth."

He paused.

"Anyway, if you can believe it, I can actually say even more...but...thanks for listening, and...it's an honor to call you my friend."

Even if I'd like to add "girl" to that last one...if you weren't engaged...and I could say a thing or two about that, even...

[Church]

Once more, Alice sat and listened quietly. She was once again found herself shocked that Didymus was urging her so strongly to join the council. He made some good points, though she remained unsure of this idea...

However, the more he spoke, the more she started to think about what she COULD do... but as she started to think about it, she thought of the biggest problem of all. Not the assassins, not her hesitancy about allowing Aristocrats to rule, not her fear that without her Section Three would be over...

“Okay... assuming for a moment that I was up for this... there's one problem. Each Noble house has only one representative on the Council, and House Malvin already has a representative. My aunt, our house's leader.”

Alice shook her head. “I would have to go to my aunt and request that she let me take her place on the council... and... well, my aunt is a very... stubborn woman.”

Didymus paused. Her aunt...

...he hesitated for a moment.

"Yes, your aunt is a rather...stubborn...woman indeed. Arguably does what leaders are supposed to do: protect their citizens and their rights and let them sort out the economics themselves. On the other hand...I don't know if she really cares about rights as much as simply survival from a military standpoint...she's kind of got the right idea, but still, a leader without real concern for their people's general well-being..."

He paused.

"...at any rate, Malvin, you know how I feel now, what I'm here for. Your aunt does seem to be actually interested in something besides her own gain on the council, but...she may take things even more authoritarian than I would."

He chuckled.

"Anyway, again, I apologize, I know this was incredibly personal, but I had to make an impression on you, to PLEASE be careful, don't do rash things like come by yourself to the slums when hurt, and I was trying to that effect to get across how valuable you probably are. To Hydron."

He added that last part. It wouldn't do if it sounded like he was flirting with an engaged girl. But...he was meaning to talk to her about that.

Alice let out another sigh and nodded her head.

“Okay... look, I'll try to be careful... but I have to do what I think is right. Maybe you have a point, and I should try for the council... but for right now, I'm a simple Lieutenant whose charged with relief in the slums. If that means I have to put my life on the line... well, it goes with the job.”

She stood up. “So I'll be counting on you to do your job and protect my people. Now as much as I appreciate all this, we really should be off. I don't want to be late on my first day back.”

She might have sounded dismissive... but Alice had a lot of thinking to do.

"I will do my duty to protect your people...and protect YOU, Malvin." Didymus said.

"And I wasn't asking you to shirk your own duty...just to not to crazy rash things like bum-rush a pistol wielding madman or come into the slums alone while injured and THEN bum-rush an automation spewing ordinance with just a sword..."

He sighed, but smiled.

"But you're right, it wouldn't do to be late now. Let's go."

They returned to the car, and Didymus drove them to the military post. As they were walking by their unit offices, they could hear Didymus' heavy weapons man telling a certain story...

-Gallic's Office-

“Ahh...send her in,” Gallic told his employee. “I would like to hear her report...”

-Shimera's Mansion-

Having been visiting Shimera for a couple weeks now, Cess knew enough to sneak into the house, using his power of intangibility, his hand sticking out from Shimera's wall waving, his voice muffled from behind the wall.

“May I enter?” he asked.

-Streets-

Jimi was heading to Stark's Office. Hammah was already there, but Jimi had stayed at the home, still making sure that everything was where it should be.

-Library-

“So, find anything?”

A man with spikey brown hair and a brown coat appeared by the man with a leather jacket, grinning.

He had a couple books under his arm.

-Narroh Manor-

“I'm not the one who said they were getting married,” Samuel said, with a small smirk to Kanna, “Oh well, it's not like you said we were getting married.”

He knew that would rile up Kanna...it was a perk of his job.

“Ah, okay!” Galv called back, opening the door to Melanie's room, walking in.

He froze, his face beet read as he saw Melanie getting dressed by her mother's assistants.

“Sorry!” he yelled, turning around quickly and running outside back into the hallway.

-Vire Residence-

“You know, you do look a little stalkerish, standing outside my house,” a voice said, walking up to Jason.

Maize grinned at Jason, “You're lucky my dad has been busy at the office...He'd have ripped your head off by now...”

[Gallic's Office]

In walked Rikku, who as usual had goggles on her head, a machinegun slung over her shoulder and a large sack full of goodies she'd obtained through questionable means.

“Oh, Mr. Gallic! I wanted to ask you about that job you offered me...”

[Library]

The man in the leather coat sigh, shaking his head to his counterpart.

“Not a thing.” He sighed. “How about you?”

[Military Post]

As they arrived at the military outpost, Alice looked up and gasped at what she saw. There was someone standing at the gate to the outpost. She wore a military uniform and a trench coat over her shoulders – and she was holding a sword.

Alice gasped. It was her aunt...

Olivier-Mira Armstrong-Malvin.

Shoot.

Didymus noticed Olivier standing by the front gate, but didn't believe that they had anything to worry about-they were on time, in uniform, and together-as they were assigned to be, as they were arranged to be. Everything was in order, so the "Ice Queen" really couldn't (or wouldn't) do anything to them, right?

Riiiiiiiight?

"Good morning, ma'am." Didymus said, raising a salute as he and Alice approached and began heading towards the entrance.

Streets

KxS was just walking along toward the library. She soon spotted a familiar face walking down the street. She straightened up and blushed slightly. Maybe Jimi had forgot about her in the past few weeks, so she didn't get her hopes up.

Instead, she just walked forward.

Alice tensed up as they approached, but she remembered to salute. She was going to try to walk right by, but Olivier stopped them in her own special little way.

By suddenly thrusting her sword in front of their path. Nothing says 'stop' like suddenly having a sword a foot in front of you. Alice tensed, and turned to her aunt.

“Ma'am...” Alice began.

“... Lieutenant Malvin. The police force has gone through the trouble of assigning an entire unit to protect your relief team. If you continue to take stupid chances, you will only waste your life, and the lives of your subordinates. If you're going to behave so stupidly, then why are we wasting their lives protecting your's?”

Alice flinched. “Sorry, ma'am.”

“You will be if you continue to take stupid chances. Carry on.”

She lowered her blade, and walked off past them.

When Olivier blocked them with her sword, Didymus also flinched, startled by the sudden momement.

She said her piece, though, and when she was gone, Didymus had to stifle some laughter.

"See? This is what I mean. Maybe intimidation gets the point in more, but the fact remains that she is perhaps a tad...excessive...in her affairs. Still, she has a point. Malvin, ESPECIALLY considering your potential...well, now you've been told twice to be more careful. Anyway, come along..." he said, holding the door open for her.

As they were walking into their offices to recieve their orders, the heavy weapons specialist in Didymus' unit was telling a story.

"I am reminded of time an engineer kill my entire squad. I search whole tiny baby rebel hideout for him. He tries to kill me with turret and mini-turret, but I CRUSH his toys like they are made of PAPER. Then I find him HIDING in CORNER like COWARD. I take his gun away from him. He tries to hit me with wrench! Hahaha! So I take wrench away from him. I take his wrench and shove it down his throat. All the way down to the handle."

The man was clearly happy with this recollection, and was laughing heartily at this point.

"Hahaha! Then I rip off all his fingers, one by one! "Let's see you build toys now!" HAHAHA! There is blood everywhere! And...HAHAHA...he is crying! HAHAHAHAHA! I think he cries out for mother, but... but... hahaha, the wrench is stuck in his throat! HA, and it sounds like-"

Though still smiling, Heavy put a hand on his own neck.

"UUUUUUUUULLLLLLGGGGGGGAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGAAAAAA! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

After roaring with laughter for a bit, he looked around at the rest of the unit, grinning.

"Is this not the FUNNIEST thing?!"

Didymus stood, staring in the doorway, wondering about what Malvin thought of this, about what HE thought about having this man in his squad, what to do now, and why...why people would find that funny, unless there was something very wrong with them.

The rest of the squad had their own reactions, even the veteran soldier spoke.

"That is NOT the sign of an honorable fight, son."

"Man, that is MESSED UP." said the scout.

[Military/Police Post]

Alice was still a bit uncomfortable by her aunt's warning... especially considering the reminder of Olivier's intimidating nature. THIS was the woman Alice was supposed to go against to get a spot on the council?

She might have thought more about it, but as they walked in, she overheard one of Didymus' subordinates telling a... story.

“What in the world!?” Alice gasped as he heard the details. Suddenly, any fear of her aunt was washed away in a tsunami of sheer anger. Alice stomped over to the Heavy Weapons Guy, stood in front of him and crossed her arms.

“YOU are the exact type of stain on the military police force that makes my job necessary! It's one thing to kill someone in combat... but to be so needlessly brutal in how you kill them, and to take such DELIGHT in having kill someone... you're a disgrace to that uniform! It's someone like you who makes people hate and despise everyone in uniform!”

Alice stomped her foot. “If I ever hear of you doing something so brutal again, I will have you discharged and on trial, do you understand me?”

When Alice scolded him, the heavy weapons guy looked less humbled, and more confused.

"So...tiny baby woman does not think this is the funniest thing?"

"THAT is an officer and you will address her as such, MAGGOT!" the veteran soldier shouted.

"I'm sorry about that, Malvin. Come on, let's go get our orders..." Didymus quickly said.

Great, just great...now instead of being contemplative and humbled about all that's going on she's angry and headstrong again...shooooot.
