Shimera's Mansion Shimera shrugged. "I don't know..." She then gave Cess a bright smile. "Let's find out!" she shouted, quickly making it out of the secret room. (I'd like to do something with KxS...Dunno what, though >.<) |

[Didymus Residence] Alice shook her head. "Look, YES, there is some danger in the slums... but it's NOT a war zone! That's the problem... the aristocrats and the military higher ups love to spread the completely false rumor that everyone in the slums is some kind of criminal! The fact is, they're mostly good people who lost everything they had in the accident five years ago... they lost their homes, their jobs, and some of them their limbs..." She frowned. "... I don't know what it's like to have nothing. I admit that. I was born into wealth and power, and I'm an commissioned peace officer... but I've seen what it's like for them, and I can't imagine anyone lives that way by choice. There may be some dangers, but I don't want to perpetuate the idea that the people there are all dangerous criminals any more than I want to perpetuate the idea that everyone in the military are mindless drones of the aristocrats!" Didymus' residence Didymus listened to Alice's speech, but he sighed when she was finished. "Listen, Malvin, I'm not trying to claim that the people in the slums are bad and should be left to rot or treated like dirt or whatever, and I hope I haven't given that impression. But the fact remains that it IS a dangerous region, at least, for, again, a wealthy and well-known heiress to one of the most powerful families in Hydron." He headed for the door, and if Alice stepped outside he'd lock it and pause. "...look, Malvin, we're similar in a few senses. As you can see, I've got it fairly well myself-at least for wealth, power is a different story...I'm not an aristocrat, of course, but I was born into the upper middle class, and I've seen what it's like for the slums as well...today's mission wasn't the first time I've been there. I don't want to provoke trouble or try to perpetuate any nasty rumors or slander...but that doesn't mean I'm willing to sacrifice your safety-or mine, for that matter-for it. Besides, you're clearly better suited to the negotiation stuff anyway. The people there may know you as that person who tries to help 'em. Me...not so much. Also, Malvin, as for that OTHER rumor...well, if I may say so, let's just say that if I was a mindless drone of the aristocrats, I ironically wouldn't be assigned as your bodyguard." He chuckled, and then gestured. "So you can do the talking, or however you wish to run this mission. If you're ready, I've got you covered and shall follow your lead-and keep you safe, should it come to that." |

[Didymus' Residence] Alice paused, and after a moment she nodded. “Hmm... very well. You do have a point. There are a lot of dangers in the slums... but I want you to promise me something. I can't give you an order because we're of equivalent rank and your job is to protect me, so what I'm about to ask you could probably disregard even if I COULD order you otherwise... so I simply ask you to promise me something, not because of any military or political rank, but simply as a favor between friends.” She paused, took a breath, and then continued. “Whatever happens, I ask you to refrain from shooting unless you absolutely have no other choice. We're going to talk to some of my contacts who aren't exactly friends of aristocrats or the military presence... there's every possibility that if they see someone walking around armed, they might be on edge. Please, don't use force unless you feel you absolutely have no other choice...” Alice sighed. “I understand the dangers... I really do. But I also know that if we're ever to clean up the streets out there, we need to win the hearts and minds of the people...” She paused. “Perhaps I rushed to judgment on you... I'm sorry if I did... but the higher-ups tend to try to saddle my unit with babysitters who frequently make it difficult for us to do our jobs. I feared – and to some extent still do fear – that you're one of them. But... I hope I'm wrong.” She turned towards the door. “Anyway, let's go.” |

Didymus' residence Didymus listened...and suddenly Malvin was speaking...calmly, even tenderly... "... so I simply ask you to promise me something, not because of any military or political rank, but simply as a favor between friends.” Friends...? Didymus paused. He had met this girl just earlier today (although to be fair, he had known of her for much longer than that-she was heiress to House Malvin and word about her, as well as formal writings and information, reached him even as he studied to become an officer and then worked at his previous post), and still had, he thought, some serious disagreements with her-most specifically about keeping secrets from the chain of command that had a chance of getting his men hurt needlessly-but she was calling him a friend? ...and aristocrat? “Whatever happens, I ask you to refrain from shooting unless you absolutely have no other choice. We're going to talk to some of my contacts who aren't exactly friends of aristocrats or the military presence... there's every possibility that if they see someone walking around armed, they might be on edge. Please, don't use force unless you feel you absolutely have no other choice...” Didymus paused, and a soft smile slowly started to make its way onto his lips. "Malvin. Please. Do you honestly think I adopt any other stance? I hope and pray that we don't need to get into combat tonight. I don't WANT to kill anyone. Heck, I had a non-combat MOS before being tasked to Section Three security. I..." He paused. “Perhaps I rushed to judgment on you... I'm sorry if I did... but the higher-ups tend to try to saddle my unit with babysitters who frequently make it difficult for us to do our jobs. I feared – and to some extent still do fear – that you're one of them. But... I hope I'm wrong.” He kept his pause, as if reflecting over the day, and most specifically, perhaps, on Alice in particular. "My mission is to safeguard yours and you yourselves. I don't want to get in teh way of your mission. And my unit's not the first you've seen, and previous units have made it harder for you in the past? Now we do have more to discuss-I'll need to know how that worked to try avoiding it if I can." He paused again, as if reflecting on whether or not to say more. "...look, Malvin, I...if you don't mind my saying so, I find the concept of an aristocrat interested in helping the people and actually leading and trying to clean this place up rather than playing the sinful games of politics and betrayal and all that other stuff that was going on at that party...most intriguing. In a good way...I may have my disagreements with you on a few things, but..." He smiled, or grinned. ...if she's like I'm hoping she is, then she's too valuable to everyone in Hydron to lose...she may be one of the best chances we have in turning leadership around and making this world closer to God's will...maybe there's a reason He let this happen to me after all. If this is so...maybe it's not a demotion... He chuckled at his internal sarcasm, then looked at Malvin with, it seemed, perhaps-a purpose, a drive, she probably hadn't seen yet in him. "Malvin. I shall only use brute force if I believe I have to, indeed, honor and faith demand no less. With that said, please, know that I am here to protect you, not vice versa. If it comes down to it...I know what this is asking, but should we be in a live-or-die situation where only one of us can escape...well, um, again, please, just keep that in mind. But hopefully it won't come to that." He looked a tad flustered, but straightened up, still looking...was it motivated? Excited? ...devoted? "Lead the way, Malvin." |

The Slums: Streets KxS sneaked out. Again. She knew Avenger would be pissed at her, but wasn't he already? She also figured now would be a good time to see if Nevex was right about having a nice place to stay. As she walked, she seemed to let worst-case scenarios fly in her head. What if Nevex was actually tricking her and was going to do horrible things to her? What if Nevex is actually a witch in disguise and wants to eat her? What if someone kidnaps her while she was walking?! She paused and thought. Naaah, none of that could happen. Bunch-a bologna. |

[The Slums] On one street of the slums, not too far from the trainyard where Stark's employees were out for a midnight party, a truly enigmatic man was moving down the streets. He had emerged from out of a telephone booth. He wore a leather jacket and strolled about without a care in the world, despite being in the midst of the most dangerous part of town. The only thing that could identify him was the bag he carried. It resembled the sort of medicinal bag doctor's were known to carry, but this one had the emblem of the Telephone Company on the side. This man was a technician for the telephone company. A man with no name, merely a title and a number. The man walked right by KxS, having apparently not seen her. In another area of the Slums, Alice and Didymus had arrived. The girl had quickly led her assigned guard away from his residence and towards the slums. Soon, the two were walking down a rather deserted alley. They were hurrying forward, Alice being in a hurry. She was heading towards a rather desolate looking building. In the past, it had been an office company – but once this area was decimated by the electric bomb; it had become disused. Alice headed to one of the boarded up windows and knocked softly. Slowly, a voice spoke out. “Yeah? Who is it?” “... It's Alice. Can I come in?” “Depends. Whose your friend?” Alice looked over to Didymus, and then back to the window. “He's a soldier. He's just here for my protection and to help with the investigation. Please, Nicholas, this is important.” After a moment, the door opened. Out came a man in a shaggy black suit with crosses embroidered on the sleeves. He wore no tie, but he had a pair of dark sunglasses in his pocket. “... He can come in, but he keeps his weapon holstered. The people staying here get nervous around guns, unless I'm holding them.” Wolfwood chuckled. |

Slums Didymus paused. "...hoslter my weapons? Very well." he did so. "Hey...aren't you...we saw you earlier, didn't we? Offering to distribute supplies for us when our firefight scared everyone away? My boys said you did an honest job, I think...thanks." |

The Slums: Streets KxS raised an eyebrow as the care-free doctor walked right past her. Curiosity struck her as she began to follow him. Didn't he know this was a dangerous place to be? She followed the doctor silently, trying not to make a single sound. |

[The Slums] The Telephone Company technician continued on down the road for a few moments, being followed silently by KxS. The man chuckled softly to himself as he reached a large chain-link fence. He paused for a moment, and then, without turning around, he spoke aloud. “I'm not sure who is following me, but I've got some work to do, so would you mind coming out? If you're going to attack me, I'd really rather you didn't, but if you must, do so now.” He turned around, grinning to himself. “And if you're not dangerous... well, come on out anyway.” [Run-Down Building] Wolfwood nodded. “Oh yeah, I recognize you now... yeah, no need to thank me pal. I'm just glad to see Alice finally got some competent help. The last people they saddled with babysitting her were about the rudest bunch I ever met...” “No need to talk about that.” Alice interrupted quickly, seemingly annoyed. Wolfwood chuckled. “Yeah, I guess... oh, where are my manners? The name's Nicholas Wolfwood, but most people just go by my last name. Believe it or not, I'm the local priest.” He opened the door for Didymus and Alice, allowing them inside. In the building, there were a number of cots on the ground, a few spare mattresses and a large number of people. “Don't worry everybody! These guys might be in uniform, but there friends of me. They're the ones who provided us with that delicious food from before!” Wolfwood led the two through the room, to a smaller room on the side. It was just as sparsely decorated as the rest of the room. There was a single desk lamp, providing very little light. A empty picture frame on the wall, and in the corner, Wolfwood's personal effects – a Bible, a pack of cigarets and a small pile of handguns. “Welcome to my ever-so humble abode! I know this place doesn't look like much... and it's not! Hahaha!” Wolfwood was a merry fellow, at the least. |

The Slums KxS got startled as that man started to talk to her. At first, she made no movement. But after a few seconds, she slowly started to step forward. She gulped silently, trying to find the right words to say. "I-I'm not dangerous. Sorry if I b-bothered you," she told him shyly. She then rubbed her arm nervously. "I was just curious...sorry." |

Slums Didymus looked around, taking in what he was seeing but not saying anything. It was strange, to see such a priest as Wolfwood (though he thought he remembered the man introducing himself as such), but he wasn't about to try talking down to a man ministering in the slums-he seemed like he could be alright at it. He simply looked around, remaining silent, waiting for Alice and Wolfwood to start their conversation. |

[The Slums] The man met KxS's shy stutter with a rather large grin. “Not a problem. Curiosity is a wonderful thing. Unless of course, you're a cat. You don't seem to be one, so I'd say we're good.” He paused, looking back to the fence. He proceeded to produce a pair of wire clippers from his pocket and started clipping away at the fence – which is probably illegal. “You're out awfully late, in an awfully bad neighborhood. Don't you think you should run along home?” [Run-Down Building] “... Nicholas, I need to find the vigilante whose been operating here recently.” Alice stated bluntly. Wolfwood paused, taking a seat in his chair. “Mmm... I heard those rumors... don't know much about it myself. I'm simply a humble priest, tending to the poor and spreading the word.” Alice sighed. “We both know you do a lot more than just that... you were one of the best soldiers we ever had, and judging from the number of guns in this room, you're haven't fully retired.” Wolfwood laughed aloud. “Hahah... I always did l like you Alice. You're not here to arrest him, are you? A lot of the activities he'd done while fighting crime aren't legal by any stretch.” Alice shook her head. “I'm not here in any official capacity. I just want to find him... he helped us our earlier, and I think he know something about Crane.” Wolfwood leaned forward. “I heard about that... look, I'll do what I can Alice. I can't make any promises...” |

The Slums "I would...but Avenger, the guy who took me in...he's angry with me right now. I kinda don't wanna be around him when he's angry," she said, looking at the fence. "Isn't that illegal?" she asked, pointing at the doctor's wire clippers. |

Run-down building Didymus raised an eyebrow as Alice and Wolfwood talked, but it appeared they weren't going to get anywhere with him, not tonight-though he was being cooperative. He simply stood, again, remaining quiet, letting Alice conduct the interview as she pleased. |
