As Solei flipped the bug, Lavan watched the entire event with a thoughtful expression on his face. He let the burning board vanish the moment it wasn't needed anymore, and watched the bug carefully. With Solei actually flipping it into the air, he suddenly got a crazy idea. Nanami said this was a stealth mission, but by now, the stealth was compromised almost completely. With the amount of fighting they were doing and the enormous spiritual signal from Nanami's direction earlier, Lavan was sure that whoever was spiritually sensitive would know about this place and their involvement already.

So the only order he still had was not to burn the forest down. But if he DIDN'T burn the forest down, that meant he was open to doing pretty much anything else he wanted.

Which meant he could actually do some damage.

"Solei! I got an idea, and it's crazier than surfing on a lightning wave!"

He opened up his burning wings again, bursting himself forward and then off to the side suddenly, starting to flit around the creature's head. It was obviously charging up for something, so he needed to distract it until it fired, and hopefully avoid the shot or whatever other move it was pulling.

"Watch out, it's about to shoot something off! Dodge around, keep to a defensive position, try to avoid whatever this thing is about to do! After it does its thing, flip it, but this time see if you can get it airborne for a bit! I need to get under it for a spell!"

This would need very precise timing. The amount of time something that big would spend in the air after being flipped again was minimal, so he needed to slide underneath it and fire off something really darn powerful to actually do decent damage. His blades did next to nothing to this thing, so all he was at the moment was a nuisance. They needed a lot more offensive punching power, and he usually had that in spades. It was time to use some of it.

This would eat a good chunk of his reserves, but... Well, if it worked, this may actually assure their victory.

The massive lightning bug was charging up for something big. Suddenly, Lavan and Solei would feel a charge of static in the air around them. Their hair stood up as static seemed drawn to them.

The creature was somehow ‘marking’ them. A static cling was forming all around their bodies, painting them both as targets. The massive creature lifted its head and fired two bolts of lightning, which were drawn towards Lavan and Solei!

They did not simply fire in straight lines, instead they swerved and came directly for Lavan and Solei – and would follow them if they tried to dodge!

“Now don't sell yourself short,” Levina said, “If my son treats you badly, you dump him, got it? And tell me so I can whack some sense into him.”

“Mom!” Galv said, blushing, “I'd never treat Melanie badly! I love her...”

Levina smirked, nodding her head, “Good. I don't want my son being a jerk. Now then, how are your studies going? Melanie, this is your first year at Kubo, correct?”

Melanie gave a little giggle, grateful that her boyfriend's family was so nice. For some reason she thought they wouldn't like her, maybe resent her because she was with their son....But no. Both Levina and Samuel had been nothing but wonderful to her, acting as second parents to the girl.

“I'd never treat Melanie badly! I love her...”

"I love you too" she said quietly, squeezing his hand.

Now then, how are your studies going? Melanie, this is your first year at Kubo, correct?”

Melanie nodded enthusiastically "I am! Though i'm hoping to take exams soon so I can maybe become a green student! I've been studying a lot with Galv and Jason said he would help train me"

Kubo Courtyard

Ryan clutched his nose as he was kicked, blood now gushing and causing Chloe to snicker a bit.

She couldn't help it, she had a very cynical sense of humor...That and Ryan bugged her.

"Dammit woman! What the hell was that for?!" Ryan exclaimed at Haruka.

"Really? That's a serious question?" Chloe asked, raising a brow "Would you like your list in alphabetical or numerical order?"

[...]

"I'm sure she'll want to draw it, but it won't be that bad" Sarai said, being uncharacteristically optimistic about the situation. "Who knows? M-Maybe she'll join too"

Yeah right.

Haruka simply yawned (in the most overly dramatic way) when Ryan shouted at her. She stepped forward and poked Ryan in the chest.

“I don’t like you.” Haruka told him bluntly. “You’re creepy, you wear too much cologne, you never learned to keep your hands to yourself, and I’m pretty sure I need to bleach my shoes after kicking you.”

[…]

Connor was smiling. Sarai actually seemed optimistic… that was a really rare, and really good thing to see! He slipped his hand around her waist and pulled her a little closer.

“Maybe she will. Either way, I think today is going pretty well.”

“Yes, this is Galv's second year here, so he'll be a green student next year himself...” Levina said, nodding her head, “So you're hoping to skip ahead to be in the same grade as Galv next year?”

She smiled brightly, leaning forward suddenly and hugging Galv and Melanie.

“Awww, that's adorable!” Levina said, before leaning back now, “Galv, you are very, very lucky.”

Galv was blushing again.

Melanie gave a little yelp when Levina pulled she and Galv into a tight hug at the same time. Despite her surprise she didn't move back, in fact the action was quite nice-- albeit a bit tight.

"Hopefully, I mean I still have to study a lot to get there, but Jason and Galv are gonna help me and i'm sure my dad would be willing to help too"

Kain was a bit scatterbrained but he was very smart, after all he was a professor at Kubo. And he loved her (he just didn't like Kanna).

Chloe couldn't help but to giggle as Haruka insulted Ryan. "I must agree with Haruka here, you're a pretty sucky person" she told him, moving closer to Lance.

"Look, neither of you has to like me but you're stuck with me" Ryan said, catching his breath enough to talk "I'm on the team now, and i'm the onnnnnly guy"

"Actually miho is on the team too" Chloe said proudly, motioning to Lance.

Lance nodded towards Ryan. He really didn’t like this guy… and he really didn’t like the idea of Ryan being alone on a team with a bunch of girls and no other guys. Although Chloe could easily beat Ryan’s ass if she wanted to.

Haruka walked over to Lance and leaned entirely too close. Lance flinched and leaned back.

“Hmm… you don’t seem as pervy as Ryan… but I’ll be keeping an eye on yooooou…”

“Well I wish you the best of luck, and if you ever need help with anything, Samuel and I are both more then willing to help you,” Levina said, “I'm a pretty good spellcaster myself, though I am electrically inclined, as is Galv.”

Galv nodded. His mother was really good at electrical spells. Galv was far from the control that his mother had, though he did have more raw potential then her.

“It'd be great if we could be in the same classes,” Galv said to Melanie, smiling, “But I don't want you to get too stressed about it, okay? It's better if you're happy, we can always see each other during lunch and after class.”

Even if Galv was perfectly content with spending all the time with Melanie.

The bug managed to tack Lavan and Solei with what seemed to be a highly-ionized field, before letting loose two lightning bolts of its usual supreme intensity at the two fighters. Lavan already knew something bad was going to happen, and was moving already when the lightning bolts flashed, blinding him with their intensity.

Lightning by itself travels at an average speed of just over three and a half thousand miles per second. Its intensity, similar to the wave that was disintegrating trees as it passed was enough to take down anything. There was no time to form spells, no time to activate abilities, no time to even blink. It was only pure instinct that allowed Lavan to get into position on time as the bug let loose with both of its attack, the flashes and following thunder of lightning blinding and deafening in its proximity and intensity.

Lavan never really heart the thunder though. His body was already in motion, in mid-leap between the bug and Solei, in direct line of fire of the bolt that would target the girl, in addition to being marked with one on his own. Both struck simultaneously, and in a blinding flash and following blast of thunder, Lavan's body vanished in a blast of white, his spiritual presence winking out completely.

It seemed that finally, the dangers of his profession caught up with the pyro, and he didn't manage to survive...

This wasn't good. This lightning bug was both REALLY strong, and REALLY big. If worst came to worst, Solei could probably turn some of it to stone, to slow it down, and try and let Lavan get in and try to take it down with his flames or swords. But that would probably leave her pretty well spent, especially after that mass-petrification she used on those FREAKIN' BEES err, NARAKU'S demon bugs. Though it seemed like Lavan had an idea... But then, there was that charge in the area. It was hard to ignore, but Solei could really feel it (possibly even a slight instant before Lavan might have, because of all of her hair that would react to the static). She was prepared to have to deal with more lightning, this time.

And then, there was the flash of lightning, homed straight in on both her and Lavan. There wasn't even time to think, but just to react with finishing spells, to try and act as defense against this.

"Αυτοστεγανοποιούμενη Κακόν Σκούρο ὄμμα Ναός πετρῶσεως!"

And then there was the flash from the lightning hitting Lavan, and then if any of it got by him, it hit Solei, who went to grounding herself with her remaining chained spike stuck into the ground, which she held with gloves in her hands... For a split second, at the least. Her hands and gloves didn't take to liking that very much, however, but that was the best she could do.

But in the light... Lavan's presence seemed to be erased...

...but as the light settled down, Lavan's fate was revealed, sort of.

...He was a solid rock. But his essence was gone...

And Solei screamed out in agony, collapsing to the ground, with her hands to her head.

As she did, though, she began reciting, as well as she could, another combined spell. She had to do this quick. That bug was still around and probably about to attack again...

Soon enough, however, she finished the spell, which seemed to turn Lavan back from stone, into his normal body... And then would return his essence and consciousness to that body soon after that ((Unless HA wants to do something differently with that)).

((the greek above translates essentially to: "Self-Sealing Evil-Eye Dark of Temple Petrification"... which is basically the end of two of her spells that she's invoking at the same time, "Self Seal, Dark Temple" and "Evil-Eye of Petrification" ))

Solei's reaction was about the only thing that saved Lavan's life. The sudden blast of lightning was too quick to simply dodge out of the way of, and the fact that it homed in prevented any sort of attempt to run in the first place. Heck, Galv was easier to fight than this bug! And that was saying something, that lightning kid was DANGEROUS.

Nonetheless, Solei's spell caught Lavan's spirit, and brought the essence of what he was into her own mind, while petrifying the body. It was a rather absolute spell, developed a long time ago by someone with great power. And now, Solei managed to catch Lavan and trap him within her mind for a few moments.

That by itself wasn't the problem. The spell wouldn't cause massive migraines, unless Lavan was awake and trying to annoy you inside your own head.

No, it was the passenger.

Along with Lavan came the essence of the spirit of fire. The Guardian of the South, the bird of flame. Suzaku. And since Suzaku existed within Lavan's own spirit, Solei's spell caught both the young pyromancer... And the spirit which granted him such immense power.

And the problem was, Suzaku refused to be trapped. It was an exceptionally powerful spirit, one whose existence warped the reality around it just by its presence. It wasn't surprising at all that when Solei managed to bring it all into her head, Suzaku's voice echoed in her head as the burning bird burst right through her spell like wet tissue paper, leaving Lavan behind in her head, but managing to somehow tether itself between Lavan and... Somewhere else, outside of Solei's control.

"You're a thousand years too early to try to entrap me with the spells of the Gorgon, little girl. But I commend your audacity and your quick thinking. The boy only lives because you helped him, after all. But no matter. You've impressed me, girl, something that no one but the kid has done in a long time. So I'll let you do what you planned... And leave you with a parting gift. Enjoy it... If you find it."

And with that, with Solei's last spell completed, Lavan was shunted from her mind back to his own body.

Lavan awoke with a gasp, coughing as the lingering static discharge finally exited his battered form, coming out of being stone with a groan of muscles and a shake. He was SURE he was goners there, but... It seemed like Solei had managed to turn him into stone and ground him the moment the lightning bolt struck. He wasn't sure how she managed to move quickly enough to do that, or whether her instincts saved both their tushes, but he sure was grateful for whatever helped them survive.

For a few seconds, he couldn't feel his own spirit. It seemed to flicker a few times, as though coughing as well, and for a split-second, a layered image of a being in a red robe and a bird's mask appeared over him before disappearing.

Lavan suddenly snapped his head up, glaring at the bug.

"That was NOT COOL! Solei, whatever you did, thanks and I owe you one, but it's time. KNOCK IT INTO THE AIR!!!"

Well, no time to lose, the bug was still alive, and Lavan was NOT looking forward to that second lightning strike he knew was coming.

[Dark Forest]

The massive electrical bug roared as it scuttled forward. Its six eyes were buzzing with electricity, and then the jaws of the massive creature opened and several large bolts of lightning went flying.

They did not head towards Solei and Lavan. Instead they hit several trees around them… but this lightning was nowhere near as potent as what it used before; so rather than destroy the trees, it simply started a fire.

[Coal Mine]

As Nanami (and Avril?) headed into the Coal Mine, voices could soon be heard. Nanami followed a small path forward until she came to a fork in the road. In front of her was a steep path that went down into a large, round portion of the room. On the left was a small platform that led to a walkway that stretched above the lower area of the room.

Nanami hurried onto the raised platform and looked down at the trench below. There were a number of large, strange tubes in the room. Inside the tubes were humans, suspended in a mysterious, glowing liquid. The tubes were all connected to a large machine in the center of the room, and in front of the machine were two figures.

One of them was a shinigami with dark hair, a thin mustache and a pointed chin. He wore a white pinstripe suit, and walked with a cane. The second man…

“You’ve gotta be kidding me.” Nanami muttered.

The second man was a tall shinigami in a black suit, with close cropped hair and a dark look in his eyes. He was certainly familiar to Nanami.

Solei's head still rang from Suzaku's presence in her head, but she nodded towards Lavan when he mentioned his plan for her again.

"...no... problem..."

She quietly recited her spell again, which caused another stone, to emerge from the ground under the bug, to send it up in the air.

Coal Mine

Avril followed Nanami along silently, as they entered the mine. She was busy thinking, trying to figure out what might have been the ideas behind what was happening...

But then they soon ended up in a room with a whole lot of weird stuff... And Nanami's dad. Someone Nanami had... not often talked about. But when she did, Nanami's unhappiness with him, was readily apparent.

"Nanami..." she whispered, as she put her hand on Nanami's shoulder. This wasn't exactly something that would be considered 'unexpected', from what she knew of Nanami's dad, but even so she was concerned about how Nanami would react to it.

[Dark Forest]

The bug was launched up into the air, but it would only be vulnerable for a matter of seconds before it would straight out with its wings!

[Coal Mine]

Nanami felt her blood run as cold as ice. She had tried to decipher the mystery behind this assignment multiple times since they arrived, but she never would have expected something like this.

Growing up, Nanami had always known that her father was a terrible person. She had eventually learned that Giovanni was one of the major mob bosses in Makai, and that he had done a number of illegal and questionable things to make his fortune… but she never imagined he would get caught up in something like this.

Not that Nanami knew what was happening. All she could tell was that there were mysterious machines, with humans inside… what purpose they served was a mystery. However, she knew the law in Makai was very clear. Shinigami were supposed to have as little contact with humans as possible… they were meant to defend the human world from evil spirits…

… and it seemed that Giovanni was doing the opposite.

Nanami felt Avril’s hand on her shoulder, but she did not look back at her friend. Her entire focus was on watching Giovanni and the mystery man.

[…]

“Things are going well here, Giovanni.” The mystery man said, as he inspected one of the tanks containing a human. “How soon can we harvest them?”

“We’ll need another few weeks for them to be completely ready.” Giovanni replied, adjusting his tie. “I assure you, they will be well worth the wait.”

“Good.” The man in white replied with his thin lips curved in a half-smirk. “And… what of your other assignment?”

Giovanni’s confident face suddenly fell flat. He cleared his throat. “Well, there’s been no real change to speak of. Nothing that warrants discussion, at any rate.”

“Let me decide what warrants discussion.” The man in white said in an authoritative tone. Giovanni became visibly paler.

[…]

“… is my dad taking orders?” Nanami whispered. “… I’ve never seen him take orders from anyone…”

[…]

“I assure you, she is the same she has always been. Kubo has not changed her, at least not in any way that would hurt the plan.” Giovanni tried to reassure the mysterious man in white. “And she and Seiryu have grown much closer… everything will go as you’ve asked.”

[…]

Now Nanami paled, her eyes widened and she began to shake slightly.

The ‘she’ Giovanni and the mystery man were discussing… was clearly Nanami.
