[Dark Forest/Coal Mine]

With a few massive explosions of acid, and some terrible buzzing shrieks, the last of the giant demonic insects were hewn down by Lavan’s swords. The creatures were killed, and their bodies seemed to completely dissolve during the explosion of their abdomens.

Several trees below had been melted as well, but the damage was actually at a relative minimum. The forest was not on fire, and while the scene would raise some questions, it was nothing too suspicious.

It seemed that the fight was over, and Lavan had prevailed…

… until six more of the large demonic insects came flying out of the tree line in the forest below! They flew straight up out of the trees, rushing at Lavan and spitting globs of acid, just like the first dozen had!

It seemed that there were more of these creatures in the forest below…

The creature let out a yelp of surprise as Avril began to lift it off the ground with her telekinesis. It thrashed around, trying to break free of her mental grip. As it did so, the creature snapped its fingers a few times more, sending additional explosions in every direction.

One of them hit the small trailer, and it immediately blew apart. What remained of it was on fire, and quickly burning to cinders. Nanami swore beneath her breath. Whatever secrets they could have learned from the trailer were gone now, burnt into ash.

“Damn it! Just kill this thing!” Nanami called in response to Solei’s question. She held her hand forward and fired a ‘missile’ made of ice; but the creature spit a great ball of flames that hit the missile on its way, melting it – which extinguished the flames.

[Kubo Arena]

Musashi grinned to Rumi.

“See… I need some help. I want to do something extra nice for Shiori, you know? Because we’re a couple now, and, well… so far the only thing I’ve been able to think to do is just go out to dinner and stuff, but that’s not really special…”

Musashi rubbed his neck. “And everybody knows you’re the Queen of all this romantic stuff! So… could you help me? Please? I’d totally be in your debt!”

“Of course I'm going to help you,” Lily said, “I want to... I really like you, a lot, Ras... I mean it...”

She blushed a little, but smiled as she looked back into Ras, “I'm not going to let some Sea take you away from me.”

Though, in the back of her mind... she was wondering what might happen if Ras found out about what and who her father really was...

She just hoped he never would have to.

-Kubo Arena-

“Gotcha!” Cess said to Rumi as she offered her design abilities, “I may see what I can come up with myself though and run it by you. For now, good luck helping Musashi!”

He grinned and ran off.'

Though once he was out of sight, he stopped to collapse for a moment, still out of energy...

Edda and Paul glanced towards each other, Edda stretching a little.

“You wanna wait around with Rumi?” Edda asked. Paul paused, then nodded.

“Alright, have fun! Sol's bugging me to train some now after seeing that fight... Considering everything that's been happening, might be a good idea...”

-Endsville Mall-

Soon Aboy and Damion would be at the mall, Aboy still smiling and blushing as she lead Damion to a clothing store.

“Okay! We'll get you some bathing shorts and some other beach supplies,” Aboy said, then paused for a moment, looking towards Damion.

“Errr...I just realized... Do you know how to swim?” Aboy wondered. She knew Damion did 'remember' certain things, mostly how to do certain things. She didn't know if swimming was one of them, or if he had known before.

Lavan finished his spin and rush with a mid-air slide and a twist that had him flip several times to loosen momentum, ending with his hands behind him and facing the area which he just shot past, seeing if there were any targets he missed. Fortunately, he didn;t, and all the bugs toppled to the ground.

"Boo-ya! And this is how it's done! Ta-ta-da-daaaa!"

He decreased the flow of energy to his blades and went to turn around and head back towards the mine when motion caught the edge of his sight... And more bugs came streaking out of the woods up at him. The redhead audibly groaned, sagging his shoulders.

"Oh, come ON! More of them? What, is there an entire nest of spiritually-aware, acid-throwing, flying menaces down there? This is so far beyond the scope of mission parameters it's not funny!"

He brought a hand up, clicking the talk switch on his earpiece again.

"Na-chan, looks like you'll have to do without me for a bit. Said bogeys are far more numerous than previously expected. I'm checking it out. If and when you can, send Solei back into the woods, north-by-northwest of the coal mine."

He clicked the switch back off, and shot downward, amplifying his swords again and curling into a ball, spinning like a falling wheel of flame, right towards the bug-like creatures!

Nanami heard the message from Lavan over the earpiece, but she was busy dodging the latest fireball tossed by the demonic Imp. It seemed that Lavan was having problems too, and he wouldn’t be coming to help them. She wondered if it would make a difference anyway… this Imp was a fire-user, and she wondered if Lavan could even burn the damn thing.

Of course, Nanami wasn’t too worried about that. She was quite sure that she, Avril and Solei could triumph over this Imp. It definitely had some tricks up its sleeves, but so did they. No, what really worried Nanami was Lavan’s request that Solei be sent to him.

… On the one hand, having Solei here would be a big help, since her stones would be very hard for the Imp to burn. On the other hand, Lavan was completely on his own… and while Nanami wanted to believe he could handle anything he went up against, his recent mission track record made her worry otherwise.

“Solei! Go and find Lavan.” Nanami called. “Avril and I can handle this thing.”

As Lavan came spinning at the newest swarm of bug creatures, something… different happened. They all came flying right at him… and then exploded on their own!

Before his swords or flames could even touch the creatures, all six of them simultaneously combusted; sending a large cloud of acidic mist right in Lavan’s direction! It seemed that the demonic insects could choose to explode on their own!

Physics are interesting things when applied to motion. Everything has a rule, and where spells bend specific rules and create impossible effects, so does technology in many ways. In the end, while some rules are bent, others stay exactly the same and still affect everything properly.

This was one such case. The five bugs exploded, spraying all the acidic substances they had in their bodies at the incoming wheel of flame, which was shooting right at them at pretty much terminal velocity. The amount of heat the blades were putting off was absolutely insane, and Lavan was making a good 3 revolutions a second, even just a little more. However, the edge of the flame blades was relatively narrow.

So while the blades DID burn a fraction of the incoming acid into ash upon passing, 30 percent of the acidic substance exploded in his direction actually landed on Lavan, splattering primarily across his back and pants.

And it started acting immediately.

Thankfully, the acid didn't splash him near the head thanks to the nature of his spin, and any acid that tried to get close to his face and arms was disintegrated, but that didn't mean Lavan escaped unscathed. The acid immediately started to melt through the clothing and skin that was exposed to the splash. This forced Lavan out of his spin with a shouted curse of pain, followed by a burst of flame and spiritual power focused on the damaged areas, turning the acid into ash and dissipating it instantly under temperatures reaching over 2000 degrees centigrade.

And now, Lavan was angry.

"Bugs. Acidic, stupid BUGS! You have a nest down there??? Well, I'm not going to take this crap from any stupid bug hive!!!"

Lavan put his wings together behind him, burst as much energy as he could into them and shot downwards at much fasted, much more insane speeds, his body enveloped in flame. It was time he stopped kidding around and started DOING things, and his body gained a reddish hue as he fell, the flames around him compressing and amplifying...

Kubo Courtyard

Ryan grit his teeth when Haruka kicked him, the teenage boy trying not to show any pain.

Chloe couldn't help but to chuckle at the other girl's action. "Oh come on Ryan, you gotta have thicker skin than that!"

"That...Didn't....Hurt..." he mumbled.

[...]

Sarai was absolutely ecstatic that Connor was willing to be with her on the team. Instantly she took the boy's arm, pulling him towards the dorms. "Come on, we have to tell Rumi! Where do you think she is?"

For once she was excited to let Rumi in on news.

Hawkins' House

“Melanie, I'm glad you decided to visit again. I enjoyed you coming over a couple weeks ago.”

Melanie blinked, looking over to the woman. "You did?" she asked, giving a small smile. "Thank you....Though I really must apologize for everything...My parents...It's all kinda complicated."

Melanie's family situation was the definition of complication.

[Inside the Dark Forest]

As Lavan came flying beneath the tree line, his speculation was proven true. There was a next in the heart of the forest… and it was a big one.

There was a massive, brownish-gray hive that spanned the length of six tall trees. There were hundreds of openings along the hive that resembled a honeycomb, but each one was large enough for a person to fit in, and it was from these honeycombs that the massive demonic insects emerged.

As Lavan neared the hive, he would notice that the insects looked… different. Some of them were the same ones that he had fought already, with the bloated red abdomens; but others had smaller black abdomens that seemed to be made from the same armor-like substance as the insect’s claws and carapace.

The insects with the black abdomens were slightly smaller than the ones with the red abdomens, but their claws all looked slightly larger, and their armored carapace seemed thicker. Their wings also looked fairly stronger.

Yet most disturbing of all was the strange haze of purple mist around the hive. It was thick, like smoke, and seemed to billow around the hive in a set pattern. There were a few openings in the mist, and from those openings emerged the insects. They would not fly through the purple smoke at all.

[Kubo Courtyard]

Haruka blinked, and then suddenly leaned very close to Ryan’s face as he tried to show that he was in no pain.

“Oooooooooh? So you’re pretty tough, then? I guess that makes sense. I mean, your dad seems like he’s a pretty tough guy. I guess you take after him…” Haruka grinned, letting the implication hang in the air.

[…]

Connor sighed a bit as he followed along behind Sarai. He had no idea how Rumi would take this news, but he just hoped that it would work out.

“I haven’t seen Rumi today… oh, but there was that fight between Cess and Shinigami, right? I bet she went to go watch that.”

After Nanami's orders, Solei simply said 'yes', and followed Lavan's directions on where to go to, to give Lavan some backup. Once in that area, she looked up trying to track down where Lavan was, and where he was headed. Following all of that, she ended up down in the forested area.

"I'm approaching what appears to be a giant monsterous insect nest from the south, what do you want my move to be, Lavan?" Solei then asked over her headset.

==========

Meanwhile, where Nanami and Avril were, there was still that strange green imp creature to deal with.

With Nanami's orders to just kill this creature, instead of trying to interrogate it, Avril had been trying to grab a hold of it, with her telekinesis. This wasn't as easy as lifting a giant boulder, because a boulder wouldn't fight back (unless it was THE Boulder) and try and wriggle out of her grip. But with this only causing the creature to try and send all sorts of fiery explosions outwards, Avril decided to try a different approach, and she slammed the imp creature down hard into the ground.

Lavan pummeled through the treeline like a runaway train, his body surrounded by intense flames that licked around him, turning passing branches into ash and setting some others aflame... Though that flame was sucked right into the vortex of Lavan's passing, leaving charred branches behind, but no flame to spread. The natural flames retrieved this was granted him minute healing ability that allowd him to reduce the pain and itchiness from places where the acid struck.

He didn't stop when he noticed the nest. Instead, he accelerated even further, shooting right at one of the holes in the hive, bulling through it like a burning lance at high speed. He let the flame around him burst outward just as he entered, pulsing it multiple times back and forth from his body, disappearing in the nest and causing small, localized explosions inside before coming out the other side only slightly slower than he came in, slamming int the ground at speeds that would surely break his limbs...

Only to vanish in a burst of fire just as he hit the ground, the licking tendrils of heat turning grass and leaves to ash.

A burst of flame appeared next to Solei, like a small spart that expanded, suddenly to burst open and for Lavan to emerge, blades at the ready, looking rather manic.

"Your move? Figure out how to take down the entire nest without either of us dying to these things and without burning down the woods! You use earth magics, make the ground swallow the nest and hyper-compress it or something. Watch out, the ones with the bulging bellies spit acid and spontaneously explode. They also fly. It's unfair! Why do bugs like this have to have so many weapons to be painful with?"

[Dark Forest/Coal Mine]

As Lavan appeared beside Solei in a puff of flames, the insects turned their sights on the duo. The smaller black-abdomen insects began to click their jaws together loudly, and quickly came charging forward. They were slower flying than the red-belled insects, but they were also much stronger and better armored.

They did not seem to spit acid, instead they came charging in a swarm. Two of them came towards Lavan from the side, slashing their long, sword-like forearms at him. Three more came flying in from above, focused on Solei, trying to hack at her with their blade-arms!

Behind them all, in the nest, something seemed to be stirring. Several of the large insects were crawling inside the nest, and strange, frightening sounds could be heard echoing from within.

The imp creature came down hard, slamming into the ground thanks to Avril’s telekinesis. The creature roared in pain as its leg took the brunt of the hit and bent backwards, clearly breaking on impact.

To Nanami, that was a good sign. The creature was now significantly injured and escape would be virtually impossible. She threw a handful of icicles at the creature as it wailed in pain, and this time it was so distracted by the injury that it did not have time to explode them.

The icicles struck the creature, impaling its chest and arms in several places. It was still alive, but between the painful body slam and the stabbing, it would not stay that way for long.

“Augh… terrible… terrible… Shi-ni-ga-mi…” The imp groaned. “You kill me… but my Master… Master will win in the end… already too late… experiments success… Master pleased… you fail…”

Nanami stepped forward with her eyes narrowed. “I can heal you. If you tell me about your master and his ‘experiments’, I will.”

The imp creature threw back its head and cackled. “Betray Master? Never would I do that! No… no… solace I’ll take in knowing that Makai will fall…”

Lavan WAS thankful for the backup, and he had thanked the heavens that his team was as competent as it was... And that they set up pairs beforehand specifically. With Solei's help, the nest wouldn't be that much of a threat... Hopefully. Especially if he heard the right things about the girl.

Nonetheless, he now had another assault to deal with, and now it was an entire swarm of bugs of all kinds, ones with heavier armor, ones that exploded acidically, and a few other types he barely saw.

"Solei. Don't get hurt. Avoid their strikes. Take down that nest by any means necessary. That's your orders, if you want to play by orders. Otherwise, let's ROCK and ROLL!!!"

He lifted off the ground just about five inches, his feet spewing flames from the soles, making it look as though he stood on air with flaming sandals. Carefully modulating his power around said effect, Lavan slid to the side like a professional skater, shooting to the left and avoiding the rushing attack coming his way, just barely getting out of range of the scythe-like blades that were being used against him.

The kid then smirked, and one of his blades disappeared as the other one gained in intensity. With a practiced motion, the pyro snapped the handle of the blade back into his belt, and dodged again, sliding back the way he came right at one of the creatures. Instead of slashing at it, however, he smashed his palm into the carapace of the creature as it retrieved its claws from a slash, and a resounding explosion came from where the palm impacted against the carapace, imitating a point-blank grenade detonation.

He didn't stop moving after that. Now surrounded by multiples of these bugs, he started to spin around, ducking and weaving as much as he could, taking minimal damage from cuts and slashes, and dealing damage with his hyper-heated blade, using his other hand to deliver devastating explosions upon contact.

If there was one trick he would never get rid of, it was the Explosive Palm. Mostly suited to melee unarmed combat, it was a layer of highly-concentrated, volatile flame on the palm of his hand that would rupture upon contact and cause a forceful explosion. However, it was carefully formed to explode in an outward direction, and thus its explosive force AND associated counter-force were both channeled in the same direction, effectively doubling the effectiveness of the explosive... And leaving him completely unaffected.

--------------------------------------------------

[Endsville Park]

Ras hugged the girl close to him, chuckling lightly.

"It's not nearly as bad as it sounds, actually. It just means that I have a set of tasks to complete, and I cannot abandon these tasks for any reason whatsoever. So as long as I don't actively try to seek conflicts with my mission, I think I will be fine. And I am pretty sure I can have a relationship with a pretty girl while working on whatever this Zelas character wants. But your help would be much appreciated... Since I have NO idea where to start."

He shook his head, as if to clear it of cobwebs.

"Enough heavy speak. Tell me, how have your studies been progressing? Learn anything new from your dad?"

Lavan’s superheated blade and his Explosive Palm was proving extremely effective against the insects. Their carapace was much stronger than that of the insects with red abdomens, but the blade’s extreme heat let it pass through their defenses and cleave them apart. The explosions easily ripped holes right in their armor and roasted the insides of the bugs; allowing Lavan to easily cut and explode his way through the swarm.

However, deep inside the hive, something was stirring. Several of the insects of both varieties were crawling around one another, wrapping their claws together as the thick purple mist covered their bodies. Slowly, they began to fuse. Their shapes twisting and mutating as many became one…

“A little bit,” Lily said, moving to rest against Ras now, smiling, despite being worried still.

“Studies have been fine, but I missed studying with you. I suppose now that you're back around more, it'll pick back up... Or maybe drop a little more,” Lily said, chuckling a little.

“As from my dad, nothing new. No new spells yet, he wants me to learn what I know better before he has me try something more advanced,” Lily added. “So I already know a bit about those new Chaos powers of yours. Anything else new and interesting with what you can do with that?”

[Inside the Dark Forest]

Lavan's toolkit was exceptional, that was an undeniable fact. Fire was one of the most destructive natural elements, and the one which caused the most damage over the longest period of time. It was a well-known fact that fire destroyed entire forests and cities without hesitation, especially if one let it burn for long. It was an element for massive area of effect abilities, an element of heat that could be used in a variety and multitude of different ways.

Unfortunately, the toolkit Lavan had at this moment was extremely limited as well, due t the fact that any area-of-effect ability here in the woods would cause a wildfire, something he was trying to avoid. So he couldn't fight the bugs at his fullest potential by far. Instead, he had to take on them one-by-one, and that was a slow and perilous process.

And now, Lavan was being pushed back, hard. For every bug he killed two sprung to attack him. For every two he wiped out, ten were ready to take their place and fill the gap. Two fell. Four fell. Seven fell. Ten fell. But there were hundreds of these bugs here, and they were swarming Lavan from all sides. He was attacked from above and from all sides, so the only solace he could seek was below, and unfortunately his element was not that of earth. So he fought, backing up where he could, demolishing bug after bug, but slowly being worn down as cuts and gashes were dealt to him that he simply could not block due to positioning or lack of place to retreat.

"Soleeeei, a little help here? There's too many of them, can't you thin their ranks a bit?"

--------------------------------

[Endsville Park]

The nod from the devilkin confirmed Lily's question affirmatively.

"I can, but that sort of thing is not for show in public, not here. There would be too many witnesses, and the corona of my energy would certainly call to question some of my abilities. I'll show you sometime, but not right now. I'd rather relax here for a little longer."

He couldn't help but chuckle suddenly.

"I never thought you would say that study would drop a little now that I am around. You always gave this air of propriety, though your constant teasing certainly puts that notion into question... Is it the same for studying? Or are you just teasing me again?"

“Alright, you can show me in a more private setting later,” Lily said, smiling to herself, “As for my actions, you have to remember I didn't grow up with a lot of other Angels. Gallic's a Shinigami” or at least is posing as one, “and I had various tutors before I came to Kubo.”

Lily then turned to face Ras, a mischievous smile on her face, “I assumed studying would be dropping a little because we'd be doing some other things. Like kissing. Or going out to places. I'd like to be able to do some of that traditional couple stuff with you, even if other people give us weird looks.”
