[Nanami, Avril and Solei's Dorm]

Lavan just shrugged nonchalantly, not even bothering to open his eyes. He had a wooden stick in his mouth, the end lit on a small flame that seemed to not progress along the stick at all, and didn't drop any ashes whatsoever.

"One, you three are used enough to me appearing these days. Two, Nanami told you all that we are meeting here, so you've had tome to make yourselves decent. Three, I gave you another warning when I was coming in, and that was coming in through the door. I have more ways to arrive than just the front door. And finally, I'm not an amateur anymore, I know exactly where your heat signature was and what the safest mode of approach is."

He cracked an eye open.

"So, how are you these days anyways, Avvie? I haven't had much of a chance to chat with ya since... Well, the entire mess these past few weeks, so let's catch up while Nanami catches up."

Avril simply laughed in great amusement, to most of what Lavan answered her with.

"I think I'm more worried now about just what you can see with your heat-vision trick," she then added, in between laughs.

"And not that much has been happening, at least that isn't something you already know from Nanami! Just the same old, same old!"

[Nanami, Avril & Solei’s Dorm]

Soon enough, Nanami came in through the door, presumably followed by Solei. She quickly flicked a small bead of ice right between Lavan’s eyes with her thumb.

“I have roommates now. You can’t just barge in here. Now stand up and act like you have some sense.” Nanami scolded him, but she seemed far less focused on his antics than she normally would.

She closed the door behind her, and then pulled out a ofuda tag and slammed it against the door. It immediately created a thin wall of light that covered the door, spread to the walls, floor and ceiling.

“There.” Nanami said when the light had full constricted the room. “A useful gift from Shinigami; even Rumi can’t overhear us now.”

She immediately turned towards the others, looking even more serious than her usual self.

“I talked to Shinigami this morning. He’s asked me to look into an unsettling rumor, and unlike certain parties who will remain nameless, I don’t intend to leave everyone behind.”

She was looking right at Lavan as she said this.

“None of you have to come. It’ll be dangerous, so I’m not going to force anyone to help me… but I could use your help if you’re willing.” Nanami told them all.

[Musashi’s Dorm]

Musashi rushed over as he spotted Shiori.

“Hey! Good, I’m glad you came.”

Shiori might immediately notice Musashi’s disheveled appearance. His shirt was dirty and he had soot on his hands. His room also seemed a bit hotter than usual.

“I’m sorry I wasn’t at the arena, but I can make it up to you. Look!”

Musashi pointed towards the bed. He paused, and then realized how what he just said might sound.

“NonononononononoNO! I don’t mean that!” Musashi shook his head. He walked over to the bed and picked up something that had been lying on it, revealing two long katanas.

“I made them!” Musashi said, his voice clearly beaming with pride. “I learned how to make swords. I was browsing some internet articles and I just sorta got inspired.”

He turned towards her. “I made one for each of us! So… you know… we’d both have one and…” He trailed off, rubbing his neck.

Nanami's reprimand was just answered with a light laugh, Lavan paying little mind to her admonishments as he looked at her with a crooked, sneaky grin.

"I don't remember your door objecting to be opened, or this room actively trying to keep me out. And I DO have sense. I like to be comfortable, your bed is comfortable, so I took the bed for the duration of this briefing. I don't see any MORE sense in standing around uncomfortably when there is a bed around."

He quirked an eyebrow as Nanami sealed the room from prying eyes and ears, and rolled to his side, facing Nanami and the others, now attentive... Until Nanami jabbed him again.

His answer was to clutch at the area over his heart with one hand, bringing the other to his forehead dramatically.

"Oh, the words! They sting, they wound so deeply!" His eyes opened up, giving his girlfriend a rather deadpan look as he let his hands go back to where they were before. "You're going to milk that for all it's worth, aren't you."

When the girl finally got down to business, Lavan finally sat up on the bed, swinging his legs over the side and placing his elbows on his knees, supporting his chin on said folded hands. "Ooooh? Old, wrinkly and deceased wants us to check into something? And it's dangerous? Don't hold me in suspense, Na-chan, spill the beans. I want to know what's so important, it sounds like a lot of fun!"

I can't see what you're imagining
-Kubo Cafeteria-

“No, they won't,” Aboy answered, shaking her head, then paused, “...Probably. But I won't let him try anything, okay? If you just say no he'll drop it.”

She smiled at Damion, “Besides, he might not have anything for you... I know he likes to help, but I think he's been focusing on helping his son Hammah with...some stuff...” Aboy trusted Damion, but she didn't think she could tell him about Hammah and his Black Blood. That was for Hammah to tell others if he wanted, not her.

“And he and my aunt are expecting another kid, too...” Aboy added, changing the subject, “So he's probably been really busy.”

-Kubo Arena Stands-

Lily smiled as Ras's offered hand, using it to get up, and keeping her hand in his and not letting go.

“Let's see... Well, aside from Cess going around and telling everyone he and Shinigami-Sama were going to fight, there's been some rumors. Nanami and Lavan have been missing from classes at times...” Lily said. She knew Ras would know what that meant. Along with Cess, Nanami and Lavan were two of the most competent Reapers at the school, along with being Aces in the Fight Club. If they were gone from classes, it meant they were on some missions.

“It's been pretty quiet, otherwise. I think the teachers are trying to keep everyone calm,” Lily added, “If you want to know about who's seeing who and stuff like that, I'm sure Rumi has a newsletter or something out...”

I wouldn't be surprised if Rumi did have something like that.

-Kubo Arena-

Cess suddenly shot up, wide awake now, blinking rapidly and standing up, staring ahead.

He paused, looked around, then laughed, “Ahahahahahahaha! Good, I didn't imagine it!”

Cess flexed his hands, focusing as a puff of golden energy appeared in his hands, then disappeared.

“Okay, glad that's not a one time thing,” Cess said to himself, nodding his head, “Wooo...I feel tired though. Time to pig out on energy bars...”

"Ooooh? Old, wrinkly and deceased wants us to check into something? And it's dangerous? Don't hold me in suspense, Na-chan, spill the beans. I want to know what's so important, it sounds like a lot of fun!"

Nanami crossed her arms and leaned against the wall behind her. Her scarlet eyes swept over the three in the room. There was intensity in her glare that was only reserved for the most serious of situations… and a special mission from Shinigami definitely qualified.

“About a week ago, there was an enormous spike in spiritual energy in the Human World. It was all centered in a heavily forested area. Not many humans live around it, which means it’s probably not just the usual type of evil spirit.” Nanami explained.

She continued. “Normally, they’d send in a full-fledged Reaper to deal with this kind of thing… but Miyamoto has most of them running around looking for leads on Asura. So Shinigami asked me to check it out.”

Her eyes narrowed dangerously. “Don’t take this lightly. The odds are this is some kind of very powerful spiritual being preparing something, and if it’s doing it in the Human World, it’s probably to avoid detection… which means whatever the spirit is up to is probably very bad news.”

Nanami, Avril & Solei’s Dorm

Avril and Solei listened carefully, as Nanami spoke, though with Avril trying to stifle herself from laughing aloud at some of Lavan's antics. Though when he brought up how Nanami was "milking" that incident that happened with him that annoyed Nanami so much, Avril went over and elbowed him slightly in the stomach.

"I think you're so far in the doghouse with that move that it might be a few years before you can dig your way out of it," she then whispered to Lavan, before returning her attention to Nanami fully so she wouldn't end up in the same doghouse.

Nanami eventually continued on, going into detail about what this possible mission was, which brought a question to Solei's mind.

"Could this possibly be related to what happened with Clarisse?" Solei asked, remembering the incident from two weeks ago, when they all (aside from Lavan) had been sent to save the principal's granddaughter and her friend in the living world.

Kubo Cafeteria

Damion smiled happily, when Aboy said that any potential tests by her possibly-evil-mastermind-scientist-in-another-life uncle won't be dangerous.

...though his emotions DID swirl a little for a moment when she added a qualifier to it, but said she'd make sure her uncle didn't go crazy on him.

In the end, though, the smile stayed, and he leaned over to Aboy, putting his head on her shoulder.

"Thank you," he said, as he did so. "And yeah, that does sound really busy... But hopefully not busy enough that we'd be intruding when we're there to cook... But maybe then we could cook for all of them, if you teach me what to do while we're there!"

Damion could be ambitious, when he wanted to be helpful. And being with Aboy made him want to be helpful, because of how helpful she had been to him right from when they first met!

...at least, 'first met' according to his current memories that only really stretched back a few weeks.

Musashi's Dorm

For a moment when Musashi pointed to his bed, Shiori simply looked back at him, with a blank, emotionless face, until he explained himself further.

When she saw what he actually was referring to, however, Shiori's eyes widened, and she walked up to Musashi, and grabbed him in a big hug.

"That's so sweet," she said, before she then kissed him.

[Nanami, Avril & Solei’s Dorm]

Nanami decided to ignore Lavan and Avril’s whispering, at least for the moment. She was in full business mode, wanting to focus on the mission at hand. It was a great honor for her to be given a mission from Shinigami, and she was determined to approach it with the utmost dignity and professionalism.

"Could this possibly be related to what happened with Clarisse?"

“It’s possible.” Nanami confirmed, bringing a hand up to her chin. “Although there’s no way to know for sure until we get there. I don’t want to rule anything out. This is, first and foremost, an investigation. We need to gather as much information as possible.”

[Musashi’s Dorm]

Musashi blinked as Shiori suddenly hugged him, and then kissed him too. A sheepish grin spread across his face, and he had to instinctively rub the back of his neck.

“Heheh… you’re welcome!” Musashi replied. “And these are good quality swords, too! I made a bunch of practice swords first so that I could make all my mistakes there.”

Most of the time, the red-headed pyromaniac was just a goofball, and displayed a certain air of arrogance... And often, incompetence. Lavan was a guy who seemed pretty full of bluster and pranks, but could often be mistaken for the sort who just couldn't hold his own when a serious situation came about. It was a misleading air of goofiness that he had cultivated for years, and he seemed like he was goofing off even in the most intense and dangerous of situations, which could mean he wasn't all that great of a person to have on a serious job.

And while it was that sort of personality that Lavan had cultivated, it was pretty darn far from the truth.

"We got any additional info? Seems pretty darn sketchy to head into it while blind. What's our time scale? What about a safe house or base of operations, will we need one of those? It's the human world, so will we need body fakes? What of permissible weapons and equipment? Area's forested, so what's the permissible level of collateral damage in case things go south? Any backup or nearby surveillance that could help us? What was the source of the info in the first place? And, the last question I can think of right off the bat: Why did it take Shinigami-Sama a full week to dispatch a team? The signature could be gone by now, or relocated far from its location."

In his head, Lavan was listing over the options. If this was a mission for an investigation and it held some truth, then Lavan could see why Shinigami-Sama picked up this particular team. Nanami and himself were something of stealth specialists, Nanami more so than he, and the others had some sort of ability or skill that was good for surveying. In case things got combat-heavy, Nanami was a powerhouse, followed up by his own still-expanding repertoire.

The question is, why the delay. A week-long delay usually meant the job was stale and hard to accomplish, and the trail was cold in case the target or objective has been moved. Unless Shinigami-Sama was absolutely sure that the source was not going to move, this mission seemed more like a wild goose chase...

... Or a test of some sort. Old Death was famous for spontaneous quizzes.

Nanami, Avril & Solei's Room

"Whatever the case is, I'm in," Avril answered to Nanami, before looking over to Solei, who nodded in agreement.

Musashi's Dorm Room

"Thank you..." Shiori still held on to Musashi tightly, "...I don't really know what else to say..."

She knew how much he had gotten into liking swords of all types, a few years ago, so she could really recognize that this was something deeply personal, for him to do, and it really moved her.

Eventually, however, she let go of her hug, and went over to the swords he had made, to look them over, and see exactly what he came up with. It didn't matter to her if they were not 'perfect', because of the meaning behind them.

[Nanami, Avril & Solei’s Dorm]

Nanami listened to Lavan’s flurry of questions and for once she was actually not annoyed. He was taking this seriously and paying attention, and for that she was grateful. She crossed her arms and began to answer his questions in turn.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have much information. I don’t like flying blind either, but we don’t have much of a choice this time. There’s no hard time scale, but with that said we need to work as quickly as possible.” She addressed his first two questions in her usual matter-of-fact tone.

“We’ll have fake bodies available to us if we need them, but as I said the area is pretty remote and there shouldn’t be any humans around. That said, we can’t rule out the possibility entirely.” Nanami explained.

“As for a base of operations, hopefully we won’t be there long enough to need one. If we do, there are a few nearly human structures. There’s a mine and a radio tower, although from what we can tell both have been abandoned for years. There’s also a few scattered houses in the area. Any of them could be converted into a makeshift safehouse if the need arises.”

“The forest, the mine… it’s all expendable if absolutely necessary.” Nanami’s extra emphasis was aimed squarely at Lavan, and her scarlet eyes were trained on his face. “However, that changes if there are ANY humans presents. We’re to avoid human casualties. Period.”

Nanami stopped for a moment just to stare extra hard at Lavan to help sink in the point that he couldn’t just go play forest fire on a whim. She hoped that the redhead had enough sense not to burn down an entire forest for fun… but she knew him well enough to know he’d at least be tempted.

“There’s limited surveillance in the area. It’s not an area that sees a lot of spiritual activity according to the Reaper Records Shinigami showed me, so there’s not a lot of resources spent watching it.” Nanami explained. “As for backup, there is a Reaper team we could call in… but ONLY IF we find evidence that this is a serious, ongoing threat that we can’t handle. If we call them in and it ends up being a bust, you can expect Shinigami to put his bony foot right up our asses.”

Then came Lavan’s final two questions. What was the source of the intel, and why had it taken a full week to dispatch a team. Those two questions were at the heart of everything.

“It hasn’t actually taken Shinigami a week. He’s only known about this since this morning.” Nanami explained. “There’s a huge backlog in the intelligence gathering. The vast majority of the professional Reaper resources are dedicated to stopping Asura. This incident unfortunately slipped through the cracks. It’s the same reason they’re sending us instead of a full-fledged Reaper team.”

With the questions answered, Nanami’s serious expression softened a bit. “Make no mistake… we have very little information, only a slim chance of backup, and we have no idea what to expect. This could just be a run-of-the-mill evil spirit, or it could be something much worse. In all likelihood, this will be dangerous. We screw up and we might not come back… and I will NOT accept that outcome. So I want everyone on top of their game. No mistakes. No screw ups. Let’s just do our job well and get back safely.”

[Musashi’s Dorm]

Musashi was practically beaming. It was rare that he had an opportunity to really do something like this.

He followed Shiori over to the bed, and the swords, and he looked down at them. Surprisingly, they actually seemed to be well-made. The metal looked strong, and the handles looked sturdy.

“I don’t suppose you wanna try them out?” Musashi asked with a grin.

Kubo Courtyard

Ryan frowned when Lance suggested that he and Chloe practice elsewhere. The boy rolled his eyes, moving back in front of the two. "Now now, i'm not here to cause any trouble...Just wanted to see if Chloe would like to practice with an actual cheerleader. Look, I have the pom poms and everything"

Chloe blinked, watching at Ryan (quite proudly in fact) pulled some pom poms from his bag. "You've got to be kidding me...."

[...]

Sarai smiled and gave Connor a nod. She loved that the boy was always able to at least make her feel a bit more confident about her abilities.

She took a breath and did a handstand, before standing back up and dusting her skirt off. She then rushed back over to him "Y-You know....The team does need some guys on it..."

Because if Sarai has to suffer then so does Connor.

Kubo Cafeteria

Melanie nodded enthusiastically, grabbing Galv's hand. "Y-Yeah, do you think I should bring her something"

Maybe a peace offering for her mother's behavior.

Endsville Apartment

Crystal couldn't help but to give a giggle "You sound a little too excited about this...." she said, kissing Sama once more. She then straightened up, looking to Joshua. "Maybe you should check on Sophie, make sure she's okay and everything"

AKA Crystal wants to kiss Sama without her future baby watching.

Lance raised an eyebrow as Ryan revealed that he was a cheerleader. If Lance had been Musashi, many jokes would be made at Ryan’s expense. Instead, Lance just groaned, quickly realizing this was all one of Ryan’s plans to creep on women. Like his girlfriend.

“You don’t seem like the school spirit type, Ryan.” Lance commented in apathy.

[…]

Connor blinked. Did Sarai just suggest that he join the cheerleader team? The young angel frantically searched for a way out of this. He would do anything for Sarai, and he would do this for her… he just really didn’t want to.

“Err… well… I mean, I guess… but before you didn’t seem like you really wanted to be on the team…” Connor pointed out. “But, I mean, if you do, I guess maybe…”

[Endsville Apartment]

Joshua quickly jumped up, not eager to watch his parents kiss. It was creepy, especially because they were his age now.

“Yeah, I’d be more than happy to.” Josh groaned, thankful for the out. He headed towards the door, hoping to get away before Sama said anything—

“Just make sure you knock when you get back! You never know, we could be busy making sure you exist.” Sama called.

“UGH. WHY. WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT!?” Josh groaned.

Sama shrugged. “I’m horribly annoying.”

Josh slammed the door behind him.

Lavan chuckled suddenly. His mind was whirling with the possibilities and various challenges presented by this mission, and he already could see how things could go very right... Or very, very wrong. Luckily, Nanami knew him all too well, and made sure to check with Shinigami-Sama what his directive was for collateral damage. In the end, his element was fire, and fire wasn't lauded as the most destructive and uncontrollable element for nothing.

His missions had collateral damage more often than not...

Still. The presence of spiritual activity in the mortal realm wasn't a surprise. Neither was Shinigami-Sama's logic in sending them, since the backlog of information was so damn huge. With the reapers busy sniffing out possible locations of Asura, and the world going as insane as it was at the moment, Lavan had no doubt that Kubo was basically used as a last line of defense and a place for free conscription into jobs that could no longer be looked into because of lack of resources. Especially with a report this vague.

Still... If old death had a hunch about this mission, that was bad. Shinigami-Sama's instincts were rarely wrong when it came to problems, and Lavan knew that all too well, especially when he was sent with the Alpha Squadron to get the girl back from Asura's base. He was told then that Shinigami-Sama had a bad feeling too...

Even the backlog of info was surprisingly huge. A week of backlog rendered most intelligence operations useless, and most trails cold. It either meant that the intel department was swelling with reports so much that it can't possibly keep up, or it wasn't acting at best capacity for one reason or another. And THAT meant that either the intel operations were incompetent... Or something was wrong there too.

Then again, if Asura had access to the intel department, they'd have been screwed already, and that wasn't happening quite yet. That had to be good news, right?

"Expendable... Such a strong term, Nanami. I wouldn't think of a forest full of life as "expendable" at all, but... If you say it is, it is. I'll make sure to try and keep things to a minimum, but I'll cut loose if things get dicey. Is it just us four?"

“Make no mistake. ‘Expendable’ doesn’t mean you can simply set it on fire, but if it comes down between the forest and the mission, we choose the mission.” Nanami elaborated, her eyes narrowed. She was really worried this mission would end with a huge, fiery creator in the ground.

Nanami wanted to do everything in her power to make sure this mission was a success. While she had run missions before, this one felt different… and she wanted to make sure that there was no trouble whatsoever.

“It’s just us. Normally I’d consider Cess for a mission like this, but he’s not going to be in any shape to fight after that duel.” Nanami explained. “Do what you have to do to get prepared. I don’t want to waste much time.”
