GRAPPLING HOOK!

Hallways

Sophie turned to Spoony, a look of frustration evident on her face. "It just can't be true, that there's nothing he can do!" she said sadly "I mean what if something happened to me? What if I died and had to go away forever, would he just let it happen!?"

Sophie wasn't actually sure WHAT happened when/if she died....Her grandpa was pretty much death-personified....

She had sooooo many questions for her dad.

Kubo Common Room

"Try not to feel too badly Connor...It really isn't your fault"

Yes it is.

Sarai looked around the room, before moving forward quickly, kissing the boy on the cheek (as his mouth was preoccupied with pizza) "Just try to think about something else" she offered.

Hawkins’ House

Kanna felt a blinding pain in the side of her head and stumbled forward, clutching the spot where Jason had sneak-attacked her!

If Kanna wasn't in pain right now and about to kill him she would have been VERY proud of the underhandedness of that move.

Instead she whipped back around to Jason blasting him (half blindly) with dark cold energy balls "YOU'LL REGRET THAT BOY!"

[Hallways]

Spoony frowned. He could tell how angry Sophie was…

“Sophie, I’m sure your grandpa would never let anything bad happen to you… but you’re not a human. The rules are different for them, aren’t they?”

Spoony sighed. He was just a Red Student, so he didn’t really know all of the rules about these things.

[Kubo Common Room]

Connor knew that Sarai was just trying to make him feel better… and when she kissed his cheek, it worked. He smiled at her. He would have put his arm around her, but he didn’t want to get her clothes all greasy from the pizza.

“I guess you’re right.” Connor smiled at her.

[Hawkins’ House]

Luckily, with Kanna half-blinded, Jason was able to dodge her attacks pretty easily. Still, he knew he had only served to make her reeeeeeeally mad and he would need to be careful.

“What I regret is that I didn’t do this sooner!” Jason yelled.

For a moment, Damion did not react at all to his being tackled by Aboy, simply lying there face down on the ground, and his arm being pulled on.

"...I'm sorry..." his voice weakly came out, "...If I knew you were... ...married already... I wouldn't have... I wouldn't have gotten in between..."

Shiori, Evelyn & Chachamaru’s Dorm

Musashi was not helping things.

Shiori jumped back slightly as Musashi spoke, before she quickly (and angrily) grabbed a hold of one of his/her arms, and then forcibly pulled Musashi back out of the room after Chachamaru.

"YOU. EXPLAIN TO HER." were Shiori's only words.

Shinigami's Office

Avril turned back to Clarisse, after Sophie and Spoony seemed to finish their part of the conversation with Principal Shinigami.

"I know this all is probably pretty freaky right now, but remember what I was talking about earlier?" she then spoke, hoping to ease Clarisse's worries, at least a little bit, "This place is probably a lot like an action cartoon or sci-fi TV show, but actually real. But don't worry, if you're going to be going to Kubo, we all can probably help you get used to things here! Though maybe not Nanami so much. She might just give you an evil glare if you catch her at the wrong time!"

Avril smiled brightly, as Nanami probably gave her one of those evil glares.

"Solei could probably help a lot, though, because she's pretty new here as well, actually."

“. . .” Aboy said, frowning. Married...?

“...what are you talking about? I'm not married to anyone! I'm not even engaged!” Aboy said, confused, “Why would I be dating you if I was?”

She had no idea that Damion had made that leap when Aboy was talking about Keyblades.

-Hawkins' House-

Samuel frowned. This was getting bad... Kanna and Jason were in the middle of fighting again, and Levina looked like she was about to jump back in too, electricity sparking around her.

He wasn't entirely sure what else he could do, short of trying to physically hold them apart...

[Shinigami’s Office]

Principal Shinigami suddenly paused, rubbing his bony chin.

“Wait! I forgot to fix the kids. I’d better go do that, don’t want them accidentally causing trouble like this again.” Shinigami mused to himself; and suddenly he disappeared.

[…]

Clarisse nodded a bit to Avril, still trying to process all of this. Sophie’s “grandpa” was a very strange creature… he looked like a big black robe with a strange skull and weird hands, and it was all a lot to take in.

“S-S-So I’m going to go to school here?” Clarisse frowned. “That’s… I mean… this place is really freaky… um, no offense.”

But don't worry, if you're going to be going to Kubo, we all can probably help you get used to things here! Though maybe not Nanami so much. She might just give you an evil glare if you catch her at the wrong time!"

Nanami channeled her inner Gibbs and smacked Avril on the back of the head.

“Don’t make her afraid of me!” Nanami frowned. Although her actions and tone might have helped convey the ‘scary’ message.

[Hallways]

Shiori had yanked Musashi out into the hallways and after Chachamaru. S/he could tell that Shiori was quite angry with the misunderstanding. S/he also knew that he should clear things up with Chachamaru.

… but Musashi is nothing if not a trouble maker at heart, and an idea crept into his/her brain. S/he had a feeling s/he might end up getting stabbed for this, but s/he also knew it would be incredibly funny.

“Chachamaru, wait!” Musashi called. “I should explain.”

Musashi paused. “… Shiori’s embarrassed, so keep our love a secret, okay?”

And then, as quickly as s/he could, s/he moved over and kissed Shiori quickly.

"Sure it may be different...But what does that mean for us? I mean what if something happens to us?!" Sophie exclaimed, not liking uncertainty. "I've already been away from my mom and dad long enough...What if I never got to see them again? Or Joshua? I don't want to be alone"

Sophie was over-reacting obviously. She was a kid.

"I want my mom and dad...."

Hawkins’ House

Kanna growled, blinded and in pain, but ready to try and kill Jason none-the-less. She continued to throw blasts until she could see again. When her vision cleared the woman grinned "You're dead boy"

Kanna slammed her freezing hands onto the ground, cracking it around Jason's feet!

Kubo Common Room

"I am" Sarai said with a small smile, leaning against him and eating her own pizza...Until more people came through the common room. The girl stiffened, straightening back up and keeping a bit of distance between she and her boyfriend.

Force of habit.

“You don’t have to worry about such things, Sophie!”

Shinigami suddenly appeared, stepping right out of a solid wall in front of Sophie and Spoony. Spoony gasped, a little surprised by seeing Shinigami just appear out of nowhere.

“You will get to see your parents again, and I would never let you just disappear Sophie.” Shinigami said matter-of-factly.

He reached down and snapped his fingers; causing Sophie and Spoony to both blink for a moment. He had fixed the damage done by Farnsworth’s “experiment”.

[Hawkins’ House]

Jason yelped out in surprise as the ground broke beneath his feet and he suddenly fell forward onto his face! He groaned in pain, and he was vulnerable!

[Kubo Common Room]

Connor sighed a little, and he scooted closer to Sarai, slipping his arm around her.

“You know, you don’t have to be so nervous, Sarai. Everybody knows that we’re together, and we don’t need to hide it.”

With a polite knock, the door opened, revealing two figures that walked into the empty office of Shinigami-Sama. The first was a tall man dressed in a patchwork lab coat, a cigarete smoking in his mouth as he calmly turned the large bolt in his head with audible clicking. He looked relatively worn out, but it was the sort of wear that meant he could finally relax.

After him, the second figure that stepped into the office revealed to be our resident pyro, who also looked beyond tired. Both of them looked banged up, the redhead far more so as he still wore tattered clothing, his vest missing entirely and his pants having been reduced to little more than strips of cloth hanging off a pair of shorts. While no wounds were visible, it was quite apparent that there were some there before, based on the patchy look of the skin underneath.

The man in the coat sighed, waving Lavan off with the back of his hand.

"Take a seat, kid. Looks like Big Death isn't here yet."

The redhead collapsed gratefully into one of the seats, completely ignoring any sort of decorum or propriety. He was just too tired for those right now.

"... Shinigami-Sama won't be happy to hear this, is he."

The crazy scientist with the bolt in his head shook his head, chuckling dryly.

"Understatement of the year, kid."

He only received a half-hearted glare in return.

[Kubo Hallways]

Shinigami suddenly paused and stood straight up. He blinked his… eye holes… and then looked down to Sophie and Lil Spoony with a strange look on his skull, as if he was preoccupied suddenly.

“… Sophie, I promise you, you have nothing to fear. Why don’t you run along and find your parents from this time, okay? I have something I need to attend to.”

With that, Shinigami suddenly vanished from the spot entirely.

[Just Outside Shinigami’s Office]

Nanami had no idea who had just arrived in Shinigami’s office, but if she did, she would have been livid for at least six reasons.

[Office of the Shinigami]

With a soft popping sound, Shinigami suddenly appeared back in his spacious office. He no longer had the soft, smiling face on his skull that he always used around Sophie. Instead his eye holes were narrowed and he looked intense.

He stood in front of the two who had just appeared in his office, and his gaze fell immediately on the crazed scientist. He spoke only two words.

“Stein. Report.”

The moment Shinigami-Sama appeared within his office, Lavan jumped to his feet, overbalancing and landing on his face as he tripped over his own failing legs. For a second, he just laid there, face imprinted into the floor, before slowly turning it to the side.

"... Ow..."

As he tried to get himself to normal and get up again, Stein simply grabbed the boy by the back of his shirt and lifted him to his feet, holding Lavan there.

"I apologize for this fool, Shinigami-Sama. We had one hell of a job."

Lavan glared at the man, shooting him a rather impressive stink-eye, considering that he was almost as limp as a noodle by now.

Stein, however stood up straight and began his report.

"The mission was a success, Shinigami-Sama, but not without casualties. The preliminary scouting operation has gone off without a single mistake and our team has managed to infiltrate Asmer's current hideout to recover the target. No other hostiles were met during our infiltration, and that had aided our progress immensely. We had all suspected a trap, but we have not been detecting the presence of anything at all until we had reached the prison chambers."

Stein's eyes hardened.

"We found the target. Her physical state is in the detailed report I have left on your desk. Suffice to say, she will be recovering from heavy physical and psychological trauma for the next few years, if not longer. We have retrieved the target and were on our way back to the extraction point when we were ambushed by Asmer and his... Things. Creatures that looked human, but had the claws and movements of hunting beasts. Asmer and these creatures managed to tear apart Alison and Garvan in the initial assault before we could even get any weapons to bear. Once we got ready, Asmer himself joined the fray and tore Pheiren in half, using her upper torso as a missile. Suffice to say we were pressed, and I joined the fight, taking on Asmer as the rest of the reaper squad engaged the lesser hunters, Lavan here taking the girl out through route B. I fought Asmer until he overwhelmed me completely and broke Spirit in half. Spirit is currently in the intensive care ward. At that point, I had to retreat as our losses mounted and only Giorg, Yin Chi and Murlin were still moving, while the enemy had only lost two of theirs.
"We have lost sight of Lavan and the target several minutes earlier, and I called a full withdrawal. We managed to get the four of us out of the fortified position, but Murlin stayed back to hold their advance after our exit. We got back to the retrieval zone, where Lavan was already waiting, having accumulated more wounds but still alive, and the target catatonic. Retrieval was quick and we managed to gate out before Asmer caught up, but it was a close thing."

He nodded to Lavan, who picked up from there, finally standing on his own two legs.

"After I was ordered to run, I took target out through path B towards the exit from the facility, the same path I took during my solo scouting mission. On my way, I met three more of these creatures that the Reapers were fighting, and managed to confuse them with a large-scale fire attack, taking out one as far I saw before I had to run. As I exited the facility, I found the exit blocked by two more, and had entered melee with them, leaving target inside the main entrance as I engaged. It took me some time to even wound one, and they kept pressing their own attack, I am still unsure as to how I am still alive. After eliminating one, the second disappeared as I retrieved the target and went on to the gate zone, when I was accosted by the second. Thankfully, the hostile barrier of the gate did its job correctly and reduced the creature to dust before it could get through to me and the girl. I waited until the arrival of the Reaper Squad, and once their remains have found their way to the escape gate, we all gated out."

Stein picked up from there.

"The target was taken by Yin Chi to Kubo two days ago. Lavan and I were in no shape to travel too far, and were forced to stay in the Reaper Encampment where we spent most of this time asleep and recuperating. Again, my full report is on your desk, and a copy had been filed and sent to Miyamoto's Office."

[Office of the Shinigami]

Shinigami-Sama listened to the story quietly, with a thoughtful expression on his skull the whole time. He tapped his bony chin with one of his enormous fingers, but made no other movements or sounds. Instead he just watched and listened as Stein and Lavan told the story.

At the news of lost Reapers, Shinigami’s eye holes narrowed a bit in clear anger. He had dispatched some of the absolute finest Reapers under his command to go and retrieve the kidnapped girl from Asmer, and it had ended up like this. It was a frightening testament to the power of their enemies.

When the report was finished, Shinigami simply nodded.

“I see.”

He turned away from them and peered off into the distance of his office, with his hands now folded behind his back.

“… I am pleased you were able to recover the girl. I will need to visit the Infirmary and check on her status when we are finished here.”

At length, he turned back around. “Tell me… what do you know about the creatures you faced?”

There was an uncomfortable silence after Shinigami-Sama asked his question. After a few seconds, Stein finally had enough and kicked Lavan in the shin, hard enough to topple the boy with a loud shout of pain, and a curse that really shouldn't belong amongst the students of Kubo. Stein remained standing, completely impassive and looking completely blank and innocent of whatever the cas ewas as Lavan grabbed onto the man's coat to stand up and steady himself.

"I actually got more data about them than the rest of the Reaper Squad, primarily due to the fact that Stein-sensei had his hands full of Asmer at the moment. Whatever they are, they USED to be like us, spirits and reapers, but they have somehow been changed. They're... Cold, is the best way to put it. As if all of what they are had been driven out of them and replaced with something I only remember vaguely from the time when Medusa-se... Medusa... Woke up Asura. It's the same feeling, but intensified and compressed."

Stein nodded.

"Insanity. Madness. Black Blood. The things that we fought were changed spirits, infested with Black Blood and driven completely mad by its effects."

This time, it was Lavan's turn to kick Stein in the shin, though the tall man didn't move an inch or even flinch.

"Stein-sensei, if you don't want to deal with delivering this part of the report, then let me actually deliver it."

He turned back to Shinigami-Sama, continuing his report

"They fight in a bestial, frenzied manner. They move extremely quickly and completely avoid any sort of gravitational law, clambering all over walls, ceilings, floors and other surfaces to attack from the strangest of angles. They have sharp claws that can extend from somewhere around an inch to about half a meter. They are covered in metal plates that have been grafted onto them as some form of makeshift armor, and their skin is pitch-black, just like their blood. I did not see any eyes, they all wore metallic masks with the pattern of three eyes on them. They are incredibly durable, and completely ignore any sort of spiritual-medium attack/. They are resistant to elemental damage, at least fire as far as I have seen, and they regenerate any wound, no matter how lethal within seconds. I am not sure I even finished any of them, there was no bodies to prove that. As far as I know, there may be as many as we have left back there still active."

Stein nodded in confirmation.

"They are resistant to spiritual mediums, incredibly so. Reaper Binding Spells were completely ineffective in holding them, and our barrier spells and defensive magics were just as useless. I managed to synchronize with Spirit quickly, but I was knocked OUT of that synchronization several times by Asmer, some sort of disrupting quality to his presence. I attempted a Soul Menace against one of the stray creatures, and it did absolutely nothing, as though there wasn't a spirit there to feedback in the first place."

Lavan shuddered.

"Don't remind me... Those things felt completely empty of everything except rage and madness, and I felt my fire respond to it. I don't know how I managed to keep my own rage down there. It was like it wasn't even TRYING, and I was getting angrier and angrier. I think I saw only red for a few moments, blanking out during one of my fights. I don't fully remember though..."

[Office of the Shinigami]

Once more, Shinigami-Sama simply stood and listened. Never once did his bony white face betray a sign of emotion. He seemed to ignore the kicking fest between Stein and Lavan, instead being completely focused on the report.

The report seemed to only get worse the more Shinigami-Sama heard of it. The creatures they had fought sounded horrifying. The idea that they could have once been Spiritual Beings the same as a shinigami made Shinigami-Sama FURIOUS. The idea that Asmer was out there, twisting and changing the people of Makai into these terrible beasts was an insult to Shinigami-sama.

What more, it spoke of just how terrible Asmer was… and how clever he was to have created minions who were so powerful, so resistant to being destroyed. Shinigami-Sama suddenly wanted to fight one of these things himself. He would find a way to destroy it. There was only one being whom he had ever been unable to destroy, and Shinigami-Sama was not about to let that list grow by even a single name.

“Okay. I understand. You did good work to rescue the girl, but we lost too many Reapers. We can’t repeat that. I expect that the written report has extremely detailed accounts of every moment of your battles, and if it doesn’t, it WILL by the end of the day.” Shinigami-Sama said, his voice grim.

“Stein. I want you to analyze all of the data we have on these creatures. I want your theories on how Asmer creates these things, I want a hypothesis on whether or not we can undo whatever he’s done, and most important of all I want to know how to kill them. Failure is NOT an option.”

It was a tall order, especially considering that they likely did not have anywhere close to enough data for Stein to answer those questions… but Shinigami-Sama suspected Stein was capable of finding out.

He then turned to Lavan.

“You mentioned that when you fought them, you felt yourself getting angrier, yes? I need to know, Lavan… was that simply your pride at fighting an opponent like that, or was it something else? Did they CAUSE you become angry?”

Shinigami had a theory… a terrible theory. If these creatures were created by Black Blood… perhaps they had a way of causing those they fought to experience the effects of Black Blood.

Lavan shook his head slowly.

"No, it wasn't natural. At least I don't think so. Sure, I was angry at what Asmer did, but I was focused on the mission and tried not to let it get to me. I wasn't frustrated in the fights either... Much... I was more fighting desperately than with fury, I think. And I never, EVER have had a red-out before like I did during the last fight against one of these things."

Even Stein looked questioningly at Lavan as the red-head continued. This was news to him. The pyro continued from there, looking quite unnerved... And annoyed, with a layer of healthy fear underneath it all.

"When I fight, it's usually a state of battle mania, but it's clear. I can still think, I can still act, and I can still make rational and logical decisions. My emotions are fully under control, I just further that mania to unnerve my opponents and enjoy the actual fight. But this time... It wasn't mania. It was like red was creeping into the edges of my vision, and the fire in me grew hotter than usual. It took Suzaku to snap me out of the red-out, and while effective, it was also quite painful."

Stein pondered for a moment on that.

"... Sounds like the effects of Madness are more potent there. I also felt my own sanity slip slowly while I was in that place, so I might have cut loose more so than usual, but... Yes, that does sound about right, now that I think about it."

Lavan smiled a bit sheepishly.

"Yeah. Suzaku had me thinking while I was out. Bag of feathers just couldn't leave the taunts alone. I am SO painting his cage blue."

Stein just sighed, turning to look at Shinigami-Sama.

"Without a live specimen to study, my own experimentation and data I have now may not be enough. I can make dozens of suppositions, and some of them may be correct, but I can't get you concrete data until I actually have something to study. And as you can guess, Shinigami-Sama, we were more worried about our own survival than a retrieval of a corpse. I'll do my best, sir, but I don't know how definite my data will be. However, when I fought them, if they really were transformed, I doubt there is a way to reverse the process. There wasn't anything even remotely hinting to a spiritual presence amongst them. I didn;t even detect them until we were attacked, and I'm constantly sending spirit waves."

[Office of the Shinigami]

Shinigami-Sama nodded to Lavan as he explained the difference between this battle and his usual style of combat. When Stein confirmed things and admitted that even he had cut loose more than usual, it seemed enough to make Shinigami certain the cause was the creatures they fought.

That was bad news. A powerful, resilient enemy who could recover from attacks was bad enough… but an enemy who was not only all of those things, but that could affect their opponents and cause them to lose control? It was distressing news, and spoke volumes for what could be waiting for them.

“Suzaku did you a great fortune, Lavan. If you had been completely lost to rage, you would not be standing here now.”

Shinigami-Sama sighed and looked to Stein. “You were right to prioritize your survival. Still, we will need to get you a specimen. We need all the information we can get if we are to defeat these creatures. I would go and fetch one myself, but I fear that my leaving Kubo would only invite another attack on our grounds… something I shall NOT allow to happen again.”

It was clear that Shinigami-Sama was still upset that it had happened at all. For a moment, anger flashed through Shinigami-Sama… and it was a truly frightening sight to behold.

It quickly passed.

“… Well, you saved the girl and we now have some idea of what we are up against. Lavan!”

Shinigami-Sama rounded on the student, now just a foot away from him and peering down at him.

“… Go and rest. You did an extraordinary job, you saved the girl who was lost; but I daresay you have homework you should be doing.”

Shinigami-Sama turned to Stein. “I will contact Miyamoto and make arrangements to capture one of those creatures. In the meantime, I expect you to do what you can. I want your best theories on how to combat these things.”
