KxS kept sniffing about. She then finally caught a scent heading toward Spork's Residence. She stood still, sniffing the air around to make sure. Then (for some peculiar reason) she howled, and ran toward where the scent was coming from.

Shimera looked at the solders with a curious face. "I don't know. Oh! How 'bout we ask them?!" she suggested, about to walk closer to the solders.

The muscles over Allen's left eye kept twitching as he looked at where Marshall Cross's image was a few seconds ago. He looked half annoyed and half fearful, not a very nice combination when set on his face. Allen gave a sigh as Kairi asked him the question of all questions.

"Marshall Cross? Well, uhh... He's my mentor. My teacher. My trainer. My tormentor. My "Master", as he had always beat into me to call him."

He shuddered violently.

"A hundred years would be too early for me to meet him again..."

As the "Dagger" girl seemed to look much more closely at him and recognized him, Allen seemed completely taken aback. HAD he met this person? She seemed unfamiliar, but if she said it was a long time ago, he could possibly have forgotten... And he was an individual that was hard to mistake, the scarred eye and the mechanical arm and white hair giving him away.

"Uhh... HAVE we met before? I don't..."

He took an involuntary step back as he blanched, the twitching in his eye increasing.

"It can't be... You couldn't be one of my mas-... Cross's debt collectors... Would you?"

As she continued and mentioned the name "Brahne", however, Allen's eyes widened and he took a MUCH more careful look at the girl.

Dark-brown, almost black eyes... Short hair... An outfit that he wondered who designed, because he hadn't seen anything like it before... And facial features that were hauntingly familiar. And the name "Brahne"...

He blinked, blinked again, and...

"... EEEEEEEEH???"

FINALLY, he recognized her. The face, now that he had a closer look, was one that he would remember for decades from now. In front of him stood not just any girl named "Dagger", but Garnet Til Alexandros the XVII, Princess of Alexandria and possibly the most important person whom he ever played childish toys with.

"I... You... Eeeeeh? What... What ARE you doing here? I thought you would be back... Uhh..."

He looked at Tim, his mind clicking at a pace almost hundreds of times faster than it usually went. She was HERE, and dressed unlike royalty, which means that he was either facing an impostor or... Or she was here undercover. He finally understood the paranoia of the soldiers around her, the utter care, and the presence of the man whom he had also seen those years ago, Adelbert Steiner and his trademark heav armor and sword.

The situation was almost otherworldly.

"Uhh... I am assuming that we will have to "catch up" later. This isn't exactly the best place to speak of... Things. Umm..."

He looked lost for a second, thinking things over, before turning to Didymus.

"You seem to be like the guy in charge of the retinue. You wouldn't happen to mind if I traveled with you until we reach Treno? I need to grab My Mas-... Ahemm... Marshall Cross by the ear and drag him back to the Dark Order, and we're going in the same direction. I can also provide protection of a sort."

Ankh-Morpork

[Spork Residence]

Skin was being attacked from unpredictable directions, and nothing annoyed him more than unpredictability. He managed to defend himself against the attacking Sama, but Spork came under and slashed at him with a weapon that actually... HURT him.

It made him bleed, but ever so slightly. A tiny cut. But a tiny cut was all it took to annoy Skin a little TOO much. He roared, releasing a MASSIVE pulse of electricity, blasting it like an expanding sphere outward, huge enough to cause a mess of whatever was left of the Spork Residence and level buildings around it in a radius of three blocks, leaving nothing but rubble and blood behind.

"YOU HURT ME! YOU BASTARDS!!! I WON'T FORGET THIS!!! I WON'T FORGIVE YOU FOR THIS!!!"

He looked like he was about to attack, but then he vanished, disappearing in a purple cloud, out of which almost three dozen more of these demonic things appeared, rushing forward towards their new targets, shouting various things from "Tasty Humans" to "I'll kill you and wear your rotting flesh as I kill everyone dear to you!"

Yeah. They weren't nice.

Creepy Alleyway

The man.....He could control water as well!?

Crystal glared up at the man. Even though he told her not to be afraid she was. She always was weary when creepy water controling men came up to her in dark alleyways....

"Are you a bender?" she asked suspiciously "And what do you want from us"

If worst came to worst they would try to make a run for it.

Central: Ansem's House-

Melanie looked up from her wound when Galv came in, trying to avoid looking like a hurt puppy or something. Her arm was rather bloody already, and she was clutching it with her other hand, trying to transfer the fluid into the bowl. She bit her lip and concentrated.

"Is it painful?" she asked him after a few minutes. The bowl was slowly filling up. Melanie could feel a headache coming on...

Central City

Eva was trying not to spazz out at the sight of all of these tanks and trucks....A feat she was slowly failing horribly at.

Eva had been surprised when Ed had told them they had got the job with the Corps...Working with some of the biggest pieces of machinery that Amestris had to offer. While she disliked this country and it's army she couldn't but to be excited working here....At least a little bit.

Okay more than a little bit. A LOT.

"I dunno, I kind of like them" Eva said looking down at her uniform. She looked like a boy, something she was extremely used to.

[Alexandria]

[Countryside]

Dagger was visibly shaken by the memories of her mother, but as she looked to Allen, those thoughts were shaken away.

"It can't be... You couldn't be one of my mas-... Cross's debt collectors... Would you?"

Dagger was taken aback; visibly shocked by the implication. She paused, her face seeming to frown… and then she grinned brightly.

“Do I really look like a debt collector? This is splendid! If I can pass for some sort of brutish thug, then surely I have become better at hiding my identity!”

Dagger seemed pleased, though it would be amazing if anyone else thought she was a ‘brutish thug’. Then, Allen seemed to realize who she was, and she smiled a bit.

"Uhh... I am assuming that we will have to "catch up" later. This isn't exactly the best place to speak of... Things. Umm..."

She nodded. “Indeed. We must make haste to Treno. As much as I wish we had time to catch up… I am on an errand of the utmost importance.”

When Allen asked Didymus if he could come with them, Dagger could not hold back a smile – or an answer.

“Of course! We are both heading to Treno, and while my mission cannot wait once I get there… well, along the way it would be wonderful to see you again.”

Garnet had not had many friends growing up. In fact, aside from Doctor Tot and General Beatrix, there was hardly anyone whom she knew consistently. Allen was the only person she remembered around her own age… it would be nice to see him again.

[Castle]

Garland slowly turned his head towards the hallway that led to the balcony from which Brahne had just been murdered.

“… I do not know. The Queen was addressing the people. I assume they are just becoming worked up for the glorious victory that is in our future.”

He was lying, FYI. He knew.

[Castle Courtyard]

“We’ve not conspired against your Queen or your Castle,” Auron growled, slashing his sword to parry a blow from her own. “We came here because Yuna wanted to HELP your people! I only defy you because you ASSAULT us!”

Yuna, meanwhile, was looking at the Castle… this was a bad situation, but she knew her destiny lay within those Castle Walls…

[Central City]

[Command Center]

General Grumman gave a small grin as Olivier appeared. He stood up and bowed to her – if she was anyone else, he would have kissed her hand, but Grumman did not feel like getting shot.

“We all share your frustrations, Major General Armstrong. I for one am concerned about the Avatar’s reemergence, and about the serial killer with the scar… incidentally, he has struck again this morning. State Alchemist Luis Ascaveda, The Iron-Fisted Alchemist, was killed in his home.”

Several of the generals murmured. Grumman waved his hands. “Sadly, we have a far more pressing murder to address – Fuhrer Bradley’s. The Avatar has slain our Fuhrer, and managed to escape. I have already taken the liberty of dispatching a massive military unit to find the Avatar, who intelligence tells us is in Ankh-Morpork. Colonel Mustang, whom led the successful raid of the Bending Valley, is leading the mission.”

Grumman cast a single glance at Armstrong. She and Mustang mixed as well as… fire and ice. (GET IT?!!1ol)

“Anyway… as the ranking Generals, we must come to an agreement on who shall succeed King* Bradley as Fuhrer.”

((*=His first name actually was King. XD))

[Streets]

Jordan tensed up as Howe called him over. The Captain was intimidating, and Jordan was constantly on edge that someone would discover his true age and he’d be jailed… or worse, kicked out of the Rangers!

“Sir, no objections here!” Jordan said, saluting his boss. He had an eager grin on his face and he tried to mask it in front of his commander… Jordan had wanted to fight Amestris forever, it seemed, and today he would finally get his chance to crush The Crogs Amestris!

[Machine Corps]

Winry laughed a bit at Eva’s happiness at the uniform. While Winry’s ideal day consisted of being covered in oil and grease from countless machines, she could still be quite ‘girly’ when she wanted to be.

Though, her biggest objection to the uniform wasn’t that it was very boy-ish. The military had let her parents down, and the good Doctor and Mrs. Doctor Rockbell had died in Ishbal.

Still…

“It’s kinda funny…” Winry dropped her voice, and stood very close to Eva. “Just yesterday, we were stealing a tank, and now they’re LETTING us play with them.”

Ed walked over to the two, Alphonse in toe beside him.

“Hey. We’ve got to take off. You two going to be okay?” Ed asked.

“Huh? Yeah, sure, we’ll be fine.” Winry said, starring dreamingly at a nearby jeep that looked to be in desperate need of repairs. She paused, and turned around to glare at Ed. “YOU be okay too! If you break that arm…”

She brandished a wrench menacingly.

Ed gulped. “W-We’ll be fine… Oh!” He looked over to Eva. “By the way, ‘Eva’ is a really Galdwinian-sounding name… you might want to use a fake name while you’re here.”

[Ankh-Morpork]

[Spork Residence]

Sama saw Garet arrive, but could hardly even function well enough to string together a few words. He was in utter horror at the moment.

He remember Mustang and Hawkeye. They had been there as Bradley viciously murdered Zen, and it had been Mustang who led the forces who destroyed his home…

“YOU BASTARD!” Sama screamed, forgetting about the monster and charging at Mustang.

Mustang’s eyes widened and he sent a fireball – which promptly met with a large ball of H2O from Sama’s waterbending – and then another blast of water, which soaked Mustang to the skin.

“Sir…” Hawkeye was at his side, now shooting one pistol at Sama, and the other at Skin. “You’re wet.”

Mustang groaned. “I don’t care, Lieutenant! I have to capture the Avatar!”

“Sir… you’re useless when wet.” Hawkeye reminded him.

Mustang flinched; and then jumped down and started drawing on the ground with chalk.

[Small Town]

Rica gave a large grin as he looked at Kanna. There was something about this woman… almost as if he had tried to/dated her in other universes.

"I'm looking for a child. Black hair, blue eyes, rather short. She ran away. Impress me."

Rica gave a small nod. “Okay, I think I shall then… however, I’m not a mind reader. I’ll need someone with a connection to the girl. Are you her mother? That would make things MUCH easier.”

He was smirking.

I'll bite your legs off!
Alexandrian countryside

“Do I really look like a debt collector? This is splendid! If I can pass for some sort of brutish thug, then surely I have become better at hiding my identity!”

Didymus paused.

"Um...Dagger, you...um...I don't know what you're talking about, Allen, but Dagger, um...you don't look like a brutish thug...in fact, if I may say so, to the contrary-"

"Your royal upbringing cannot be so easily masked." Steiner butted in.

Didymus was internally relieved, but wondered if Garnet would press him on his remark.

Was it right? Yes, it had to be, regardless of how I feel, it's true...she looks like the opposite of a brute...still...oh Lord, please forgive me of these things if they be sinful...

Then, Allen asked if he could come along. He was about to speak when Garnet beat him to the punch.

“Of course! We are both heading to Treno, and while my mission cannot wait once I get there… well, along the way it would be wonderful to see you again.”

Didymus felt even more tense...yet relieved at the same time.

If somehow...she doesn't feel the same way...than this issue won't be nearly as bad...Lord, Thy will be done, please...

He shook his head.

"Alright. Let's go. No time to waste."

He began heading back to the wagon, presumably with the rest of the group.

"Sister!" he called to Chloe. "What happened here? Come, we should probably get going!"

He walked over to her, very close, and whispered to her.

"We've picked up a newcomer. Dark Order-you know those people...he's going to be riding with us to Treno. He seems nice enough, but despite what light, or imitation light, he carries, you're being told also, right? A taint...he's accepted something undeniably dark upon himself. Let us be careful..."

He was glad, in times like these, to have Chloe with them. A fellow Paladin he could trust.

Alexandria Castle

Inside

“… I do not know. The Queen was addressing the people. I assume they are just becoming worked up for the glorious victory that is in our future.”

Belleza paused.

"Sire...pardon me, but...that sounds less like cheering, and more like...panic..."

As a military commander, Belleza could tell the difference.

"Should we investigate? Regardless, what are your new orders for the...the remnants...of the air fleet?" she asked.

Outside

Beatrix raised her eyebrow at Auron.

"Impressive. Only a Paladin has ever parried one of my blows."

She grinned slightly.

"Still, I've never backed down from a worthy challenge. Still, I would not have assaulted you if you had YIELDED. Which is what I think would have been reasonable, if indeed you lacked designs against my queen and country!"

She raised her blade.

"I give you several blows until you fall before me."

She did not say this purely out of confidence for her own sword skills, but, rather, because she was beginning to cast, and concentrate in anticipation of unleashing her "cheap spell"...

Meanwhile, more of Alexandria's soldiers were surrounding the Spiran entourage.

"Um...Yunie?" Rikku said, slowing getting to her feet.

"...thanks...and not to sound gloomy, but...I think maybe we should get out of here..." she said, noticing the odds stacking against them.

Central City, Amestris

Command Center

Armstrong simply closed her eyes.

"Mustang? He failed to do the job last time, what makes you think he can do it again?" she asked.

"Regardless, sir, you're right...we must come to a conclusion as to who would succeed Bradley..."

She had a look about her that indicated she wasn't saying everything on her mind...

"...any volunteers?" she blatently asked.

The empty Fuhrer's chair sat across from her, and she was viewing it, at least as far as she would show, with no visible desire or yearning.

Anyone who openly volunteers is an idiot. Who would want a place they could be so easily shot? she thought.

Of course, she expected that almost every hand BUT her own would go up when dealing with the rest of the generals.

Streets

Howe nodded.

"Good."

"Remember, people." another Ranger said. "This is Wilde's first mission. He needs his proper initiation...so we need to make sure we save a kill for him."

Howe simply nodded.

"Yes, our unit's grisly initiation ritual must not be hindered..." he remarked, his tone bearing both approval/acceptance and sarcasm.

If Jordan were to look around, he would see that half the men in the squad had notches all over their rifles...and the other half-including Howe-had none. Of course, he would have known that Howe and every other member of his squad had fought before...they apparently just didn't notch their rifles.

"Let's move. Casual. Spread out, and converge at THIS street corner." he said, pointing out a place on the map-right across from the Amestris Central Motor Pool/Garage (or wherever the most work on their vehicles was done).

With that, Howe put away his map and rifle, and pulled his cloak around himself, heading out into the streets. Some of the others did the same, and they dispersed into the crowd, passing themselves of simply as cloaked travelers.

Ankh-Morpork

"DON'T CALL THE COLONEL USELESS!"

Now, Cyrena seemed to be more interested in scolding Hawkeye then hurling her battle cries at Sama.

"YOU MONSTER! STAY BACK! DIE!" she called, jumping in front of Mustang and "firing" her beams of sunlight at Sama!

...maybe not MUCH more interested.

“Do I really look like a debt collector? This is splendid! If I can pass for some sort of brutish thug, then surely I have become better at hiding my identity!”

As Didymus began to contradict the statement, Allen started waving his hands around, shaking his head almost too eagerly, looking absolutely horrified that it was HE that made the now-remembered princess of Alexandria think that she looked thuggish.

"Nonononono!!! That's NOT what I meant! I mean, Cross's debt collectors were all kinds and... And Cross liked to pile up debt on debt... And I didn't remember you and... You don't look brutish or thuggish or muscular and macho at all, G-... Dagger! I'm sorry it was taken that way! You look like... Like... Uhhh..."

He gave a rather helpless sort of look at Tim, who was currently projecting a sense of such profound amusement, that Allen just KNEW that Cross was watching him RIGHT NOW. And LAUGHING.

"Tim, stop laughing and help me out here!"

Of course, the likelihood of Timcanpy actually LISTENING to Allen was pretty low to begin with, since the little golem either mostly ignored Allen or just snickered at the boy, and now was the second option. Allen, red in the face and completely embarrassed, had to deal with the situation on his own.

"Well, uhh... What I meant t say was that you're, uhh... Looking good, Dagger?"

The fact that he phrased it as more of a question than an answer took away a bit of seriousness of the meaning behind it.

When Garnet expressed her happiness at Allen's joining the group, the boy simply stepped back, smiled an almost blindingly-happy smile and gave a low, formal bow of gratitude.

"Thank you. It will be my pleasure to travel in such company. It definitely HAS been a long time..."

Allen followed the group as they began to head towards their wagon, remembering with a bit more embarrassment that his first time meeting Princess Garnet wasn't all that great either. He managed to fall through the large chimney Marshall Cross had him clean while he spoke to Queen Brahne, and Allen spent hours working on it before tripping from exhaustion and rolling out of a dirty fireplace, covered in soot and grime, coming to rest at Garnet's feet...

He gave a nervous chuckle at the memory, hoping against hope that the princess, now looking all grown-up wouldn't remember that particular circumstance...

"But what I don't get is... Why aren't you back home, Dagger? The last time I saw you, you've been happy there. Is there a reason why you're not there anymore? And why was that dark creature chasing you?"

Allen carefully avoided speaking of any sort of royalty or castles, understanding that this was ore of a covert operation than anything, especially from the way Cross spoke before.

Ankh-Morpork

[Spork Residence]

Sama, Mustang, Spork, Amestris, and on top of that, new demonic entities! Oh my! Ankh-Morpork was turning quickly into a massive war zone, with fighting breaking out absolutely everywhere. The demons that came out of nowhere were devastating the general population, hunting down the weaker ones.

And some of the more powerful demons decided to stick around.

One of them, a surprisingly lucid young man with black skin and blank-white eyes was watching Sama and Mustang.

"... Fools. They'll just kill each other, and my job will be all the easier."

He turned t face Spork, the man who was just a little ago fighting Skin, and brought his hand up.

"Will you entertain me, maybe, human? Do you have what it takes to entertain me, an Akuma? We shall see, yes... But You won't survive the night. Of that..."

The shadows around the demonic man coalesced into a spherical shield.

"Of that, you can be assured."

I can't see what you're imagining
Ankh-Morpork

-Spork Residence-

Lots of things were happening! Unfortunately for Spork, he had a more pressing matter at hand then figuring out what was what.

After all, someone who was threatening to kill you was probably the biggest problem right now.

Spork held up his diamond sword. Should he attack? Stay on the defense? He wasn't sure...

“Who are you?” Spork then asked.

That weird girl with sun stuff was attacking Sama, so Garet turned to eye Mustang and Hawkeye...

He held up his sword, trying to figure out what to do...

“Hey! I don't know what you're trying, but this guy is a good guy!” Garet yelled at Mustang, “And a friend! Not going to let you hurt him!”

-Creepy Alleyway-

“No...I am not a Bender,” the man told Crystal, “Not...exactly. Where I am from, some call me an alchemist, but not like the ones you know here. No...I am an Adept.”

He smiled slightly, “As for what I want...I want to meet the Avatar. The ability to control all four Elements is...very interesting to me...”

-Streets-

“Shimera, that might not be the best idea,” Cess said, placing a hand on Shimera's shoulder to stop her, “I doubt they'd answer us anways...wait...”

He paused. A connection to his golems...

“Hey! It's Kxs!” Cess said, “Come on!”

He turned around, heading down the street.

Roxas followed along with the group, as did Namine, wondering what was going to happen, and what these dark things in the city were.

Kxs would nearing the Spork residence, where Skin had been...Of course, it was still a battlefield!

Central

-Ansem's House-

“It's fine,” Galv said, ignoring the slight throbbing pain in his wrist, “I'm more worried about you. When you're ready, I'll bandage you up.”

He smiled at the girl. The pain hurt, but it wasn't anything he couldn't deal with.

-Streets-

“Great...we lost them...now what?” Jenna muttered, looking around the streets, “And we still haven't found anyone else...I'm worried about Isaac and my brother...”

Sheba just nodded, looking around, “Maybe we should find something to eat...”

Alexandria

-Countryside-

“Alright, let's go then!” Sora said, once everyone was ready, the wagon would set off!

"Um...Dagger, you...um...I don't know what you're talking about, Allen, but Dagger, um...you don't look like a brutish thug...in fact, if I may say so, to the contrary-"

"Well, uhh... What I meant t say was that you're, uhh... Looking good, Dagger?"

Garnet’s face scrunched up as she tried to make sense of what her bodyguard and her old friend were saying. Sir Didymus seemed flustered, as if he knew what he wanted to say but was unable or unwilling to express it. The white-haired boy on the other hand sounded as if he didn’t even know what he was trying to say.

“… I get it; you’re making fun of me.” Garnet decided, crossing her arms and giving a small ‘huff’. She snapped her head away from the two, and looked over to the horse-drawn wagon they had taken this far.

“They’re not making fun of you.” Zidane walked over, slicking back his hair as he went. He had an odd smirk playing on his lips, and it made Garnet uncomfortable. “They just want to… how should I put this so as not to offend your highness? … ‘Take you for a ride on their wagon’.”

Zidane made a few crude hand gestures, and Garnet turned pink and slapped him across the face, before stomping off towards the wagon.

“Whaaaaaaaat? I didn’t say I wanted to… I mean, I do, but I was talking about them right now.”

“You… you disgusting, foul, dirty, scruffy-looking--!” Garnet growled.
“Scruffy-looking?” Zidane gasped in shock.

“THIS CONVERSATION IS OVER!” Garnet summoned up as much ‘royal authority’ as she could, and stomped her foot loudly. “Everyone who is coming with us should pile into the wagon. We are leaving for Treno. I have no time for this nonsense.”

((I do hope no one objects to this; but…))

In a few moments, everyone was on the wagon (or the horse) and they were on the road to Treno.

Garnet had settled down from Zidane’s lewd comments (which Vivi had taken the liberty of apologizing for on behalf of his friend). It was only after a few moments that Garnet recalled Allen’s earlier question.

"But what I don't get is... Why aren't you back home, Dagger? The last time I saw you, you've been happy there. Is there a reason why you're not there anymore? And why was that dark creature chasing you?"

“Oh, Allen…” She looked over to him, and paused. “… There is a reason I left Alexandria, and it has to do with that monster. Not long ago, a strange plague befell Alexandria. A odd mist called ‘miasma’ has become prevalent in our countryside… it turns animals into vicious monsters, contaminates food, and drives people to do… horrible things.”

She gave a small sigh. “My mother… she was effected by the miasma. She changed both physically and in who she was. Soon, she had allied us with Amestris… and become very hostile toward Galdwin.”

She paused, casting a glance to Didymus.

“… Relations between Alexandria and Galdwin have never been good, but… mother became openly hostile. She is sick, from the miasma, as are many others… I left Alexandria in hopes of finding a cure. Doctor Tot helped me make a arrangement with the Paladin Order. They helped me escape, and are helping me now as well.”

She shook her head. “I have to save my people. Either we shall be consumed by war and destroyed by Galdwin, or we shall triumph and become servants to Amestris… either way, Alexandria loses its heritage and its independence. I have to save my nation, and my mother.”

The physical and mental burden on Garnet became clear on her face. She looked tired, and she seemed unnerved.

“… I have to… I HAVE to save my mother…”

[Castle – Inside]

"Should we investigate? Regardless, what are your new orders for the...the remnants...of the air fleet?" she asked.

Sitting silently, Garland tapped his fingers together. He waited, hesitating, as the gears in his mind clicked. He wondered what SHE wanted him to do?

“… Belleza, go investigate.” He ordered, but he issues no further orders for the Air Fleet.

[Courtyard]

Auron gave a gruff grin to Beatrix. He had long since given up fear in the face of a foe – though it had also been long since he fought anyone of Beatrix’s skill level.

“… You’re overconfident.” Auron said simply, as he continued to fight.

Yuna turned her head to Rikku. She was sweating, and her different colored eyes both shone with fear and hesitation. She did not want to leave now, not when their goal was so close… but when she did not even know her goal…

“… Let us make haste.” Yuna decided, and then she held up her staff. “GHOSTLY VEIL!”

Yuna let loose a loud cry, and as she spun around, she called up one of her summons.

Phantom appeared, and floated by the four of them (Rikku, Yuna, Auron and Cid). The Phantom cast a powerful spell that, if successful, would render the four of them invisible and allow them to escape!

[Central City]

[Command Center]

"...any volunteers?"

There was a lot Grumman could have said, on the issue of why he had sent Mustang, but instead the General was focused on what else Armstrong had asked.

He leaned back in his chair, as several Generals raised their hands and began clearing their throats. However, no one openly stood to be the first to suggest themselves.

So, Grumman stood up and did it.

“… I know there’s a lot of very talented Generals here. We have some excellent military minds, and there’s not a man or woman present without the proper combat experience. However, there is something else to consider.”

He flashed a small grin. “… The people do not yet know Bradley is dead. When they learn he has died, and that he was murdered by an enemy we all thought slain, there will be panic. Naturally we must not allow that to happen.”

“As it is, we need to decide quickly, as we need someone who can immediately take action and comfort the populace, and reassure the troops. Now… General Faulkner is too important to South City’s daily operations. I daresay if you leave, we’ll have trouble in South City. The same goes for General Armstrong – now is certainly no time to take you away from Briggs!”

Grumman shook his head. “… Now I may just be an old man who enjoys his daily coffee and chess games, but… I am the ranking General in the room, and as it happens, my office is just down the hall. I’m familiar with the personnel and protocols in Central, and I worked with Bradley’s staff very often.

He shrugged, and sat back down, sipping on his coffee. “Just some thoughts.”

[Streets]

Jordan looked at the rifles, and listened to Howe’s words with a chill down his spine. He was a soldier, trained to fight for Galdwin. He knew what that meant – but he had never before taken a life. It was both exciting, and nerve-wracking.

When they moved out, Jordan proceeded.

[Ankh-Morpork]

“Hey! I don't know what you're trying, but this guy is a good guy!” Garet yelled at Mustang, “And a friend! Not going to let you hurt him!”

Mustang and Sama both looked to Garet. Mustang had already changed his gloves, so that he now had a pair of dry gloves over his hands. He stepped forward, looking at Garet.

“This ‘good guy’, as you call him, is a monster who devastated our country. I saw him myself, attacking our soldiers and causing massive damage during the Bending Valley Incident. Now, he has gotten his revenge – by killing Fuhrer Bradley.”

Sama paused, memories rushing back. He remembered Mustang… and he remembered Bradley. It had been Bradley who had killed Sama’s father. The news that Bradley was dead was a relief – and to hear he had been blamed for his death was a sick irony.

“… Your Fuhrer wasn’t human. He was a monster; I saw it with my own eyes.” Sama said to Mustang, his voice filled with malice.

Mustang almost collapsed from shock. He looked over at Sama, his jaw having dropped and his eyes now wide. The Avatar KNEW? He had seen Bradley back then?

“…” Mustang wasn’t sure what to think.

Allen couldn't believe what he heard. This blond boy insulted Garnet in perhaps the worst way one could insult her, and insulted both himself and Didymus at the same time as well.

And he was absolutely mortified at what the guy was saying about him! Allen was a boy of honor! He was taught a lot about life early, and he knew how he must treat others so he would be treated well in return. And while Marshall Cross would indefinitely chase tail, Allen had learned what NOT to be from the very same man that was his teacher.

Zidane's comments left a dark impression and a very bad taste in Allen's mouth. So he could do no more than to follow the princess into the Wagon...

But he DID leave a few words as he walked.

"You are spirited, my friend... But do not aim such words at another. If you don't watch yourself, if you don't take care of the very light that makes us human, you will fall. I would not wish such a fate even upon my worst enemy. Think of what you said... And watch for the darkness that may consume you. Because you would never forgive yourself if you begin to hurt the innocent."

And so speaking, Allen silently climbed up into the wagon, sitting opposite of Garnet, relaxing.

As he sat, he listened to Garnet's tale, and mentally filed away the facts. So Alexandria was heading in the wrong direction... Cross was right. Something happened to the Queen. And it seemed that this "Miasma" was at fault. And the Queen began a political game that Alexandria was losing.

No wonder Cross contacted Garnet through Tim. Cross Marian was quite taken with the queen at one time. And this Miasma seemed awfully familiar...

Like the toxic mist the Akuma produced...

He sighed as he watched Garnet slump, looking burdened beyond her years. It almost reminded him of himself. She was burdened with saving a nation, just as he burdened himself with saving everyone he could from the demons, the Akuma that the Millennium Earl was so adept at making. She took it all upon herself, and Allen couldn't help but marvel at the girl's tenacity.

Garnet grew up to be strong. That particular thought made him cheer up substantially, and he resolved to help this girl as much as he could. He could do no less for an old friend, and perhaps the first girl he ever played a game with.

Though something began to interest him.

"How do you plan to do what you said? Is there something you have in mind, an actual cure for Miasma that you found? Do you have some sort of plan to fix relations between Alexandria and the other nations?"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ankh-Morpork

[Spork Residence]

Spork's opponent drew both of his hands around himself, the shadows forming into a long length of chain with two wicked-looking "pendulum blades" on the ends, ones he began to swing around casually. He himself was enveloped in shadow, a malicious darkness that withered the very ground he stood on.

"Me? I'm Seylen! Second-Level Akuma, and..."

His features shifted into something that looked like a combination human and horse, a mechanical-looking, bladed, gray-purple-and-black centaur swinging the weapon around like one would swing around a flyswatter.

"Your executioner!"

And he threw the first blade at Spork!

“… I get it; you’re making fun of me.”

Didymus' eyes widened.

"W-what?! N-no! Of course not!" he cried, looking genuinely worried.

Still, after that, he went to Chloe, gave her the previously-posted speech/warning, and boarded their transportation. He heard Allen's remarks, but didn't make any himself.

In the case with Garnet and Zidane and company, he tried, largely, to simply give his testimony by example of how he conducted himself. He guessed that Zidane would not be reached, in all likelihood, but those kind of speeches.

He listened as Garnet elaborated on the situation.

“My mother… she was effected by the miasma. She changed both physically and in who she was. Soon, she had allied us with Amestris… and become very hostile toward Galdwin.”

"Indeed;" Didymus said. "relations deteriorated rapidly. Just recently, we heard that Alexandria allied with Amestris, and considering the current state of affairs, that was as good, it seems, as a declaration of war on Galdwin. It seems..."

He shook his head.

"...if I may theorize, it seems that Galdwin decided to strike first. I don't know how deep into Alexandrian territory we've gotten, but...oh dear..." he said, noticing the effect this was producing on Steiner and probably Garnet.

"...I apologize. I just...have a penchant for strategy. Even though I know that war is a terrible thing...but we...well, never mind. Go on."

He listened as Garnet spoke on, and saw her get...stressed.

Both he and Steiner showed concern.

"Princess..." Steiner said. "...please, do not be so hard on yourself...yes, you bear a great burden to our people, but, as the Brother Paladin has said..."

"...your burdens, much of them, at least, are ours." Didymus answered. "The Order tasked me with guarding you because of the many lives that depend on you. Which means YOUR duty to protect them is mine as well, and Steiner's, by our responsibility to defend you. Please...you don't need to bear this all alone...you DON'T bear it all alone."

He paused, wondering if he had said to much, or if he should stop, or what.

"Indeed." Steiner said. "We are here, princess, for you. Please, remember that."

"How do you plan to do what you said? Is there something you have in mind, an actual cure for Miasma that you found? Do you have some sort of plan to fix relations between Alexandria and the other nations?"

"Galdwin doesn't WANT to fight Alexandria, not particularly." Didymus said. "Simply by merit of Garnet claiming Alexandria's throne, peace can be made between the two nations. That's quite a start, at least. I don't think she has a cure for miasma...I theorize that perhaps it can be healed out of a person with prayer and faith...you know, faith healing and divine intervention...but we don't know exactly what it is, to be honest."

The wagon was well on its way, and would be in Treno...um, sometime...XD

Alexandria Castle-inside

"...yes...sire..." Belleza said.

She strode down the hall. As she neared the balcony...she brought her hand to the hilt of her saber. It sounded...bad...

She stepped out. The railing was broken, and...

"Wait...oh, wow..." she whispered, then, looking over the railing, she gasped!

She pivoted around and ran back down the hall.

"Sire!" she called. "The queen...has been murdered!"

She was baffled. How could this have happened? Where was the murderer?

outside

Beatrix saw Auron suddenly vanish...along with the other suspects!

She was...visibly angry. When you had the nickname of "The cold-blooded woman who silences even the crying infant" you can bet her angry face was...intimidating.

Her head was filled with all sorts of feelings and thoughts. She was confused, angry...no. She had to focus.

"FIND THEM!" she roared, and the soldiers began scurrying about.

Perhaps some magic of my own... she thought.

Meanwhile, Rikku saw what happened, and marveled at it.

"Wow!" she cried. "Um...come on! Meet up outside!" she called, and began running.

Central City, Amestris

Command Center

As Grumman made his speech, Armstrong's smirk slowly became visible.

So, the old coot from the east wants it, does he? ...very well. At least he was confident.

That is what set him out and impressed Armstrong-at any rate as much as such an act could. Rather than appearing as a cowardly power-grabber, Grumman spoke with confidence, without hesitation, with a relaxed tone that seemed to indicate that he was in control of himself, at least, if not the situation.

...he looked simply STRONGER than the rest of them.

"Well said, General." she spoke up. "I would think in the east you may need a suitable replacement..." she raised an eyebrow at the other generals. "...but you DO seem the most qualified."

Outside vehicle corps

Howe and several other Rangers were gathered at the corner Howe had designated earlier...

...he was going over the plan. Sniper positions, infiltration teams, and places at which to set up explosions...

"Wilde." he said, if he was here. "You'll be with me. We'll be infiltrating. Stay with me, do as I say, and..."

"...and he'll keep you alive." another Ranger remarked, at it was clear in his tone he was certainly NOT being sarcastic.

Ankh-Morpork

“… Your Fuhrer wasn’t human. He was a monster; I saw it with my own eyes.”

Cyrena had been fighting hard, trying to get at Sama...but he was good.

When that remark rendered her CO speechless, however...

...she both was filled with rage, and thought she saw her chance.

"YOU are the MONSTER!" she cried. "YOU MENACE OUR PEOPLE AND MURDER OUR FUHRER IN WARTIME!"

She charged at Sama, in a rage, snapping and thus "firing" her solar beams at him!

"FEEL SUNSHINE!!!"

Allen just sighed, thinking things over. So this was a tense three-way situation between Alexandria, Galdwin and Amestris. Which meant that there was probably more trouble brewing than he heard from rumors. Alexandria was small, too small to withstand an invasion from one of the larger nations and countries.

The fact that Galdwin went for a preemptive strike only worsened matters.

"So let me get this straight. Queen Brahne, the beautiful woman I remember letting you out of the castle to play amongst the orchards was infected and angered Galdwin with a declaration of war. Galdwin, fearing invasion, decided to strike first and neutralize the problem before it became one. She also allied with Amestris, a nation which seemed to be ripe with internal strife lately..."

He thought for a little bit.

"Also, from the information you gave me, Galdwin's Order of Paladins is currently working WITH you to attempt to remove the problem through non-hostile means."

Allen sighed, sitting back and looking upwards.

"This is turning out to be a rather complicated dance."

He switched his attention to Didymus.

"Your strategical thinking is most helpful right now, Paladin Didymus. It gives us insight on how Galdwin war leaders would think right now, and would let us plan accordingly. To put together a good plan, one must know the behavior of the opponent, and I apologize for putting your home country in such light, Sir Paladin."

Allen sighed, thought for a few more moments, and shook his head.

"This is a complicated problem. You say there is no cure for Miasma, at least no definite cure except for faith and belief. However, I also know that Garnet here would not simply take the crown away from her mother... She cares too much to do that, and such a struggle for control is simply never in her mind at all. Which means a cure MUST be found. But..."

He gave Didymus a piercing look, one that usually did not belong on the face of a 16-year-old.

"What assurance do we have that Galdwin will simply stop the invasion when... Princess Garnet assumes the throne? What assurance do you have that Galdwin won't simply take her off her throne and assume control themselves, since they are already invading?"

"Opponent...?" Didymus wondered, but let Allen continue.

But..."

"Surely you've heard of the concept of faith healings. In fact, I theorize, if I'm not mistaken, that you were including that, but as you may have heard, well...they're commonplace enough, at least, when faith is there." Didymus said.

Indeed, the Paladins had reputations as faith healers in Galdwin.

"What assurance do we have that Galdwin will simply stop the invasion when... Princess Garnet assumes the throne? What assurance do you have that Galdwin won't simply take her off her throne and assume control themselves, since they are already invading?"

Didymus simply met Allen's piercing look, and kept a calm manner and expression.

"If that was Galdwin's intent, why would my quest to guard Garnet have been met with the government's approval? Perhaps some conspiracy, but the fact is, Galdwin is not interested in flat-out conquest. Of course, when dealing with international affairs, things may get...complicated...but we are not interested in simply conquering other nations. Nor are we interested in a massacre-which is what would occur if we tried to simply take over. The very REASON I'm here beside Garnet is because we want to end this conflict with Alexandria as quickly and with as little bloodshed as possible-and Garnet is friendly to Galdwin, as friendly at any rate as any of Alexandria's recent leaders have been. Why would we have risked open war to aid in her escape, shelter her, and now send me along to protect her if we did not hope that she may one day lead her nation to make peace?"

He paused.

"Again, we know that attempting to take control of Alexandria would produce a massacre, as the people would resist fiercely and we would have to crack down fiercely if we wanted that control. But again, what assurance do we have that that isn't what Galdwin wants? Again, my presence here at her side, and my orders to offer my life for hers, should it come to that-which I hope it does not and, for my part at least, have no intention of letting it. Without Garnet, there only WILL be two ways to make peace in Galdwin's eyes-the total destabilization of Alexandria's government and the installation of a Galdwin-friendly leader in Alexandria, which will likely cause all sorts of political and social turmoil and loss of life, or the complete military pacification of Alexandria-another option that would involve immense loss of life. Both options also could lead to the essential subjugation of Alexandria. As such, the very fact that I am here, helping to pursue the only option that involves the LEAST amount of bloodshed and mucking in Alexandrian politics, is an indication that Galdwin isn't trying to simply conquer Alexandria."

He took a deep breath.

"This invasion may SEEM aggressive...and it is-an aggressive strategy. However, to catagorize it, I'd think, as an act of international aggression would be short-sighted at best. Again, considering the current state of affairs, Brahne declared war on Galdwin the moment she officially allied with Amestris. She had been allowing Amestris' troops free passage through her lands to attack our less-fortified border with Alexandria. She had been stationing her forces near the border. I think the writing on the wall was rather obvious, myself. And again, any pretense of peaceful intent towards Galdwin, I think, was abandoned when Alexandria offically allied with Amestris. To sit back and allow their hostile intents to be brought to bear against us when they were ready...would not only be...unwise...but wrong. We would be wronging the people of our nation if we refused to protect them..."

Here he was, defending the Galdwinian invasion of Alexandria in front of...well, Garnet.

Even Steiner was...not pleased...with the speech.

However, he hesitated, knowing that Didymus spoke the truth. And perhaps THAT was the real reason why he looked distressed-because perhaps this invasion of his country WAS justified...

Didymus sighed.

"I am sorry that it comes to this...but it has. Perhaps the best thing we can do is get Garnet in power as soon as we can...so that she can make peace with Galdwin and...and then we can focus on subduing Amestris..."

"Surely you've heard of the concept of faith healings. In fact, I theorize, if I'm not mistaken, that you were including that, but as you may have heard, well...they're commonplace enough, at least, when faith is there."

Alen couldn't help but bring a gloved hand up, smiling a bit sadly as he ran a finger along the scar over his eye, downward from the strange inversed pentagram above the eye all the way down the line that ended on his cheek.

"I know of faith healings. Another Exorcist I know performs miracles with prayer and the Innocence he was gifted with... But I have also learned that some things not even prayer and complete faith can take away. Such a thing rests in my eye."

As Didymus explained the actions of Galdwin, Allen nodded, believing Didymus outright. There was no distrust in his presence, as Allen's questions have been answered. He seemed surprisingly simple... And surprisingly trusting, especially for a situation like this.

"I just wanted to know more about the events that transpired. I do not know what you have all been through, what things you have seen and what information you were privy to. As long as you speak words that are backed by the god we serve and trust, I will put my faith in your ability and honesty, Sir Paladin."

He again leaned back against the wall of the wagon, looking upwards in thought.

"So Galdwin is here only to suppress a problem before it becomes a festering wound that can't be healed except with amputation. I agree with your assessment, too. You, princess Garnet, are the key to peace. I am sorry if I distressed you, Sir Paladin, I know this must be hard for you as well. Seeing a country such as this, which was once peaceful, attacked because the Queen began to behave strangely, and your own home forces were forced to retaliate."

He suddenly blanched as he began to think fevereshly about something, before his face steeled into iron determination.

"I have to come with you, at least for a small part of your journey. This war WILL cost lives... Lives that will be all too eagerly exploited by the enemy we have so far kept at bay, a man which you would know by the title of "The Millennium Earl". His... Akuma, the demons he creates, are made from those that have been recalled from the clutches of death. I fear that you are ill-equipped to face the numbers of those monstrosities alone. The Earl will walk amongst the dead again, and I fear what would happen if he sets his eyes on any of you."

He quickly shook his hands in front of him, looking a bit sheepish.

"Not to say that you can't take care of yourself! But... You Paladins often prioritize the destruction of darkness to other possible solutions. And... Well, you know the beliefs we follow, beliefs that my eye has allowed me to confirm, at least for myself. I simply can't rest at night thinking that I could have helped, could have brought peace to so many that were restless and in pain."

He shook his head quickly, getting the thoughts out of his head and switching to a more safe topic.

"So what is it that you are looking for in Treno? Well... Besides my maste-... Cross, that is..."
