Harbor

Rikku was uncharacteristically quiet on the way back to the harbor.

This was probably Yuna's first clue that something was up.

As they approached the harbor, though it may have been hard to see in the dark, they were in a different area.

Rikku suddenly looked around, and gave a whistle.

There was some shouting (in Al Bhed, Yuna may have been able to recognize), and suddenly, a machine looking like it had been scrapped together arose from the water!

http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb2011...d_Extractor.png

"Yunie...if you go back, that creepy guy will get his hands on you...you can't marry him! That other boy says he can feel that you're not safe!...you're...you're my cousin! I don't care what you say about your duty and all that...I can't let anything happen to you! You know this, Yunie...Al Bhed are loyal to our kin...so come with us...please? The others will be fine without us..."

It was clear in her tone that it was tearing Rikku up inside to do this.

Camp

“May I have a word with you while we pack?”

Didymus was clearly deep within his own thoughts, but musted up a small smile to Garnet.

"Of course. What is on your mind, lady?"'

Central City, Amestris

Hughes was indeed puzzled by Mustang's rantings. It didn't seem to make any sense. Hawkeye was going to die for his dream, yet he was abandoning it? The nation was outdone?

"Have you been drinking?" he asked.

However, his position facing Mustang revealed something to him Mustang did not see-Sama.

He whipped out his pistol and, if there was an alarm button on Mustang's desk (or some sort of lever or siren in the area), he hit it.

In any case, he fired. Mustang's drunken stupor or whatever could wait until after the threat was dealt with.

Suddenly, Yuna found herself in a bad position! An Al Bhed machina had appeared, and it was readily apparent that Rikku was preparing to kidnap Yuna for her own good! Yuna gasped and raised her staff.

“Rikku, stop this! The wedding... the wedding is not your concern!” Yuna frowned. She understood what Rikku was doing, she truly did... but this was not the right answer. Yuna had to help Garnet...

[Camp]

Garnet looked a bit fretted, leaning against one of the broken walls of an old building.

“... Yuna. She and I... we're sisters, or at least that's what that Aerith woman said...”

Garnet was looking down at her feet. “... You know her quite well, don't you? I... I'm just not sure what to make of all this...”

[Central City]

There were no alarms in Mustang's office by design; it had once belonged to Bradley, who had frequently entertained... unusual guests. However, as Hughes fired his shot, Mustang was suddenly on his feet.

The bullet was knocked away with a gust of wind, and the door was blown open.

“Settle down!” Sama shouted, throwing a 'whip' of water – which splashed over the end of the pistol and froze solid.

“... The Avatar?” Mustang's eyes widened. He raised his hand and snapped his fingers – but to his chagrin, his alchemy still did not seem to work. He wondered how Maleficent had stopped it, and what this could mean for her current location...

“I didn't come here to fight you.” Sama quickly growled, his eyes now wide and his breathing heaving. Had he been shot... Crystal would never have forgiven that. “Besides, you owe me one for Bradley, don't you?”

Mustang paled a bit, memories flashing back. The Avatar had been there when...

“... Stand down, Hughes.” Mustang shook his head. Perhaps it was what Sama just said, or more likely the fact that Mustang had lost all sense of hope and purpose. “... Come to kill me, too? It won't do you any good, boy...”

Sama was still on edge, looking at Hughes, and then back at Mustang.

“... I came here to talk. That's all... it's about that Hawkeye woman...”

At this, Mustang's demeanor changed. It was quite ironic... Sama had come in believing that Mustang would shoot him on sight until he mentioned Riza; when in a cruel twist of fate, Roy was actually accepting of the Avatar prior to this moment.

The second Hawkeye's name passed Sama's lips, Roy spun around and grabbed a pistol from his open desk drawer. He fired – at Sama's leg – but the Avatar was quicker, using a small tornado to blow the bullet off course.

Still, a risky trick, and one he didn't want to repeat. Sama jumped across the room, and Mustang fired a few times. The door was thrown open by a pair of soldiers from the hallway – but a gust of wind knocked them back, and a moment later Sama used the water from a jar on the desk to freeze the door shut.

“WILL YOU SETTLE THE HELL DOWN?” Sama shouted.

“WHERE IS SHE?” Mustang roared back. His alchemy not working, he reached for one of the swords hanging on the wall – another of Bradley's old prizes. He jumped forward and slashed; and this time Sama was caught!

The boy was cut across the chest and cried out as his blood spilt. Sama hit the ground and rolled; as Mustang stabbed at the carpet. It was a difference of seconds that kept Sama from being impaled.

“Be hard for me to tell you if I'm DEAD.” Sama shouted again, now leaning up and clutching his wounded chest.

Mustang hesitated, sword in hand. “Explain. Now.”

Sama glared at Roy... he as angry at this moment. He had failed the village, disappointed Crystal, and almost gotten killed. This was not going his way...

“Not totally sure; but I can find her.”

Roy apparently did not like this answer. He charged at Sama and slashed; the boy jumped aside and delivered a kick to Roy's stomach. The Fuhrer fell backwards, and Sama took the opening to kick him again.

Mustang, though, was a professional soldier. He may have relied on alchemy too much, but he had combat training. He caught Sama's third kick and spun him around, sending him flying into the wall near the balcony door.

“I really can find her... look, I came here to discuss ending the war...” Sama groaned, now with blood trickling down his lips.

Roy suddenly stopped, frozen in place. He had his sword raised, ready to strike... but then Sama mentioned 'ending the war'.

How could that be? Hadn't it been Mustang who personally oversaw the destruction of the Bending Valley, and the downfall of this boy's people? Hadn't it been Hawkeye who shot the Avatar? How on earth could he even consider coming to Amestris with some peace talk... it was surely a trick.

“Please... there is a way... a way to end this war... no more bloodshed...” Sama groaned, even as his own blood stained the carpet from both his mouth and his chest wound.

Mustang hesitated, and slowly lowered his sword. “... How can I believe you? How can you be here for anything other than revenge?”

Sama shook his head, slowly and painfully. “I... revenge isn't my thing... yes, I hate you and your nation... but even if I killed you, there'd just be another fuhrer... and, I don't know... I just feel like maybe you want to see this war end as much as I do... and from what I overheard just now, I'm right...”

“You FEEL?” Mustang growled.

“Yeah... well, it's an Avatar thing... trusting my feelings goes with the title...” Sama groaned, now leaning against the wall. He was losing a lot of blood, and feeling woozy.

Mustang hesitated once more... then he thrust the sword in the fireplace for a moment, heating the blade. He walked over towards Sama, and dropped down to his knee. “I'm going to close your wound...”

Sama paled. Mustang could easily kill him right now... “... I swear... I'm telling the truth... about wanting peace, and about finding Hawkeye...”

Biting his lip, Mustang brought the blunt edge of the now burning-hot sword to Sama's skin; searing the flesh and closing the wound. There was a hiss of smoke and the Avatar cried out in pain, but after a few seconds, it was done.

Mustang tossed the sword to the side.

“... Explain, then. How can you find Hawkeye?”

“Wild Rose... has a lead... on where she is...” Sama mumbled, now feeling very tired. “I can help you save her... but before that... peace.”

Roy wanted to go after her now... he was tempted to issue an order to round up Wild Rose; but then the soldiers had failed to do that for months.

“What about peace?” Mustang grumbled, Maleficent's words still ringing his ears.

“... Ankh-Morpork... I'm gathering representatives from nations there... for a peace summit. You have to come in person... meet with them... end this war before more people die...”

At this point, Sama was on the verge of passing out, but he struggled to stay awake. He couldn't break his promise... he couldn't die... he had to come back to the girl he loved...

“. . .” Mustang hesitated, standing back up, and holding the sword firm in his hand. He looked down at the blood-covered blade for a moment... and then he tossed it aside.

“... Hughes. Go get a doctor. Don't breath a word of this to anyone.” Mustang shook his head.

Crystal just stood there stiffly as Sama moved forward and kissed her suddenly. Her whole face went red, and while she was still horribly mad at the boy she couldn't help but to melt a tiny bit at the action. Of course, as soon as it begun, he turned and disappeared, leaving a very confused (and mand) Crystal behind.

The girl let out a frustrated yell, turning on her heal and grabbing AGoI by the arm , pulling him back in the direction the group had come. Hammah was lucky enough to be spared the teenage girl's iron grip. "Come on, we're going back to HQ!"

That wasn't a question.

"That dumb idiot is gonna get himself killed! ARG! How annoying is THAT?! I need something to punch."

Mustang was still brooding. First, he finally obtained the job of Fuhrer – but only after the General whom he admired like a father was gunned down by a Galdwinian Ranger. Then, his personal confident and right-hand (and love interest) was kidnapped by a homunculus... after that, Mustang was confronted by a wizardly woman and told he was merely her pawn.

And now, the Avatar was lying on the floor bleeding, after promising to save Hawkeye and end the war. Mustang was entirely sure that this would be his best – and perhaps, only – chance to kill the Avatar...

… but if what he said was true...

The idea of a peace summit... Roy was mulling it over in his mind. If he attended such a summit... if he publicly committed Amestris to peace and signed an treaty ending the war... then what?

Maleficent wanted Alexandria destroyed, to use for her Philosopher's Stone. Yet, if Mustang signed a peace treaty... then perhaps he could force Maleficent into making a move, and if he did; he could expose her.

Expose the lies behind the Government... it would likely destroy Roy's chance at being Fuhrer – probably bring down the entire Fuhrer system... but then, it would also mean a chance to really change the system... to do what he'd dreamed of doing...

Maybe this was his best chance... his only chance.

“... Avatar. You still awake?” Mustang asked.

“Sorta.” Sama groaned. He was trying not to pass out.

“... I'll do it. I'll go to this peace summit. When is it?”

“You will...? Great... and I have no idea... haven't really talked to Ankh-Morpork yet... got a friend from there... we'll try to go arrange it soon as we leave Central...”

Mustang frowned. “There's more to this than you can imagine. I can't simply halt Amestris' military campaign until the summit... you'll need to hurry.”

“Sure, thing... assuming I don't bleed to death on your carpet.”

Mustang shook his head. “That won't happen.”

Sama paused. Perhaps it was the blood loss, but he had to ask. “... One more thing... if you're serious about peace... I want the bending valley restored...”

Mustang hesitated. “... After we declare peace, yes. That can happen.” Assuming we don't all get killed by whatever dark forces that witch has at her command...

“Rikku, stop this! The wedding... the wedding is not your concern!”

"You're my cousin. Don't you understand? That's enough to concern me...maybe it's because we don't travel outside the Cluster much, but Al Bhed have few friends...THAT'S why family is so important! That's why we've come to realize how important we are to each other! Because we can't afford to lose anyone! It's our way, Yunie...you're my family. That's why your wedding's my concern!I wouldn't need another reason even if I WASN'T Al Bhed! Families should look out for each other! That's why...that's why I hafta do this!"

Rikku was clearly not alone, as in addition to whoever was piloting the machine, there were soem other figures brandishing what looked like simliarly scrapped-together firearms standing at intervals a bit away.

"Zicd red ran yht mad'c ku!" one shouted.

"Hu! Ed tuach'd haat du pa mega dryd! Fa tuh'd haat du rind ran!" Rikku called back.

"E tuh'd fyhhy feht ib vekrdehk y suhcdan!"

"Cra fuh'd rind ic, aedran! Dnicd sa!", with that Rikku turned back to Yuna.

"PLEASE, Yunie, come with us! They were fine without us before, they should be fine without us again...please, don't do this to yourself...or to me..." she said.

Camp

“... Yuna. She and I... we're sisters, or at least that's what that Aerith woman said...you know her quite well, don't you? I... I'm just not sure what to make of all this...”

Didymus paused.

"To be perfectly frank, I don't even know myself if everything that she said is the pure and unvarnished truth...whether she lied, or was simply mistaken, or was indeed telling the unvarnished truth...in any case, as to your question, my knowledge of Yuna...well, a lot can change in a couple years. I spent a couple weeks in the Cluster on a mission trip getting to know her-we were roughly equal in age, I think she was just happy to have someone who she could argue was a peer around as opposed to a caretaker or older or younger friend..."

He sighed.

"Those memories are...I don't know what to make of them. I enjoyed the time I spent there, and I think I did get an inkling of what she's like, and she I. But...again, a lot can change in a few years...though she does appear to be the same, at least in many regards..."

It was a tad awkward to him, perhaps, talking about this in front of Garnet.

Of course, if Aerith was right about this, then I've had my heartstrings tugged at by a pair of sisters...I wonder how this will affect things...?

Still, he gathered himself and tried to muster up a small smile for Garnet.

"But what is it you wish to know, Lady Garnet? I confess, I'm not entirely sure what to make of all this myself. But I can attempt to give you insight or counsel, of course."

Central City, Amestris

In a short while, Hughes came back.

"Is the Furher hurt?! What-what's going on?!" the medic who Hughes had brought demanded.

"Is that who I think it is?"

"Just go with it." Hughes said.

"...let me guess, I'm not allowed to talk about this?" the medic, now a tad indignant, asked.

"I don't think so. But it's not my call." Hughes said.

He shot Mustang a look that seemed to say "Go easy on him. This is a shock for him. Me, too."

Yuna stood in shock as an Al Bhed contraption and some others from Rikku's clan appeared and intended to take her away. She knew Rikku was just doing what she thought was right... but Yuna shook her head.

“No! Rikku, you are the one who doesn't understand... I must do my duty, no matter what. You must stop this, and I must do what I feel is needed... there is a reason all of this has happened, I believe that, and I must continue forward as such.”

[Central City]

“Neither one of you are to breathe a word of this to anyone.” Mustang replied immediately, setting his chair back up and taking a seat. The Fuhrer let out a sigh, as the medic began to get to work addressing Sama's wounds.

“... Hughes. I'll be heading to Ankh-Morpork. I don't want anyone to know... call Major Armstrong, have him prepare a car and meet me out front. You handle whatever business comes up, keep my absence a secret.”

Rikku shook her head.

"Look, you're right, I bet there is a reason that all this has happened...I've been around you and now that boy and everyone long enough to start thinking about that kind of stuff..."

She shook her head, and her expression hardened.

"...but if there is a reason and there's a plan behind it, I don't think you need to worry about it! It'll come through either way! You've done your job, Yunie! You don't need to go and get trapped in a sham marriage that's gonna hurt you!"

She tried to look at Yuna, but couldn't bring herself to do it.

"I'm sorry Yunie...but...please don't make me do this..."

“I don't think she was wrong.” Garnet spoke up in response to Didymus. “I cannot explain it, but... I think that woman was supposed to be there... can it be coincidence? That when I finally embarked on this quest, I came across Yuna... and when I finally arrived here, I find that she and I are said to be related?”

Garnet shook her head, hugging her knees up towards her chest and leaning back so she could look up at the starry skies above.

“I do not believe any of this has been coincidence... think about it, Didymus... think about everyone we've met. There's Sora... his home was destroyed by that same vile Maleficent woman who killed my mother... and we met Cecil, a Paladin who gave you a special sword... and now we've met Yuna, who very well may be my sister... no... who I'm sure is.”

Garnet frowned, looking back at the destroyed city. “I was born here... I am from Spira. My true mother and father lived here... whoever they were... and when this city was destroyed, I was saved somehow... and look what happened because of it? I'm the one person who might be able to stop Alexandria's part of this war...”

Suddenly she stopped and stood up, turning to Didymus. “... Do you think your people would fight alongside mine? Do you think the armies of Galdwin would join with the armies of Alexandria to fight, if we had to? I would rather avoid more bloodshed, but...”

[Harbor]

Yuna narrowed her eyes, and shook her head.

“You're wrong, Rikku! I know what you're trying to do, and I appreciate the reasons... but you have to let me make my own choices. Please...”

Yuna raised her staff. “Should a summoner's own sworn guardian really pose a threat to her?”

[Central City, Amestris]

“I think naïve optimism is still better than blind slaughter, Hughes.” Mustang sighed, and then he looked to his best friend.

“Besides... it's my mistake to make. Now go. That's an order.”

He then turned back to Sama and the doctor. The doctor had finished patching the boy up, but Sama still looked rather weakened.

“... I'll agree to your plan, Avatar, but you must keep your end of the deal. You must find Hawkeye and bring her to Ankh-Morpork safely, and when you do, you must not use her as a hostage. If you attempt to... I will kill you, and every last Bender on the planet.” Mustang vowed in a cold voice.

Sama nodded slowly. “So no pressure on me...” He frowned, and winced as he stood up. “I'm going back to my friends now... I'll see you in Ankh-Morpork...”

Didymus listened as Garnet spoke, and waited till she had finished...

“I was born here... I am from Spira. My true mother and father lived here... whoever they were... and when this city was destroyed, I was saved somehow... and look what happened because of it? I'm the one person who might be able to stop Alexandria's part of this war...”

"You know me, Lady Garnet..." he said. "I don't know whether or not that woman was right about everything, but...all this...it sounds like no coincidence to me. You, surviving this, being shielded and then guided back here, me meeting Yuna a while back and now returning to the Cluster, the biological daughter of...of..." he paused. "...of Brahne passing on in infancy in time for YOU to take her place, and now, a Paladin standing at your side...Lady Garnet, you know that sounds like a plan to me, not mere happenstance."

“... Do you think your people would fight alongside mine? Do you think the armies of Galdwin would join with the armies of Alexandria to fight, if we had to? I would rather avoid more bloodshed, but...”

Didymus paused.

"There may be some reluctance in some parts, on both sides, probably, but...relations were cordial enough before. I think that we'd prefer you fighting alongside rather than against us. So in short, I think the answer to your question is yes. But if I may ask, Lady Garnet...what do you intend to do? Do you intend to withdraw Alexandria from the war entirely? Or..."

He paused.

"...perhaps the more important matter is deciding how you will get the people to trust you? I...well, there's a lot to think about..." he paused, trying to be tactful about situations Garnet may still be hurt concerning.

"...in the meantime, is there anything else I can do for you or counsel you on? I think we're almost finished up packing..."

Harbor

“Should a summoner's own sworn guardian really pose a threat to her?”

Yuna's words cut into Rikku, as emotions she either rarely had or was good at suppressing finally began to come out.

"...I..." she paused, faltering.

"...when the summoner poses a threat to herself, then it's a guardian's JOB to protect them from themselves!"

Seeing the staff being raised, the machine's pilot acted! He fired some canisters out of some tubes apparently designed for weaponry-flash bombs, as some other Al Bhed prepared to charge in!

Central City, Amestris

“I think naïve optimism is still better than blind slaughter, Hughes.”

Hughes shrugged.

"You're right there...just be careful that the first doesn't actually LEAD to the second." he said.

“Besides... it's my mistake to make. Now go. That's an order.”

"Yes sir." Hughes said, and with that he was off.

“I apologize,” Carrot said, then sheathed his sword suddenly as Scar charged.

He was going to attempt to grab Scar and throw him into a wall!

But he knew enough to avoid that arm...

“Weren't you listening?” Sergeant Angua said, frowning, “I'm Ankh-Morpork not here in Central. I don't have any authority here...”

Galv frowned, then glanced to Melanie, “W-what d-do you think we sh-should do?”

“Um, okay...” Spork said, as Crystal began to drab him off, Hammah following behind them.

He frowned though, thinking.

“...If we're going to set things up in Anhk-Morpork...we're going to have to get there before everyone else...”

“Reflect!” Sora yelled, creating a magical barrier, to stop the canisters!

“Look, you have to let people make their own decisions!” Sora shouted at Rikku, “They're own hearts have to decide what's right for them...you can't make those decisions for them!”

But if I may ask, Lady Garnet...what do you intend to do? Do you intend to withdraw Alexandria from the war entirely? Or..."

“Withdraw? After everything we have seen and learned... no, I could not.”

Garnet shook her head. “I want to end the war... that is my entire reason for doing this... ending Alexandria's involvement would not be enough to complete that goal. That horrible woman from before... she's connected to this somehow... this war cannot end unless we find out what's really going on and stop it...”

“YOJIMBO! Save me!” Yuna cried out, and the ground around her feet became engulfed in a green glow. The flash bangs blinded her; but it was too late.

The giant Samurai looked to the Al Bhed as they charged. It drew its sword, and slashed! Yojimbo could cut mountains in half...

“Rikku, stop this at ONCE! I am making my decisions, and you must respect them!” Yuna called out in anger.

[Central Underground]

Sama managed to returned, now covered in bruises and freshly mended cuts. The boy looked rough, but at least the bleeding had been stopped by the doctor.

The boy stumbled into the underground and collapsed against the wall, breathing heavy.

He did it! He got Mustang to agree... now he just needed to hope Crystal wouldn't kill him.

Didymus looked at Garnet now with...was it respect? Approval? Admiration of the resolve she was showing?

...he didn't know himself.

"I imagine the war itself could end without that...but you're right, that would be a bad idea, and would only facilitate the repetition of this situation later."

He took a deep breath.

"But the next step toward that goal is to return to Alexandria? Is that what you plan to do?"

Harbor

The sword swing scattered the charging Al Bhed!

The machine fired again-this time launching depth charges at Yojimbo!

For her part, Rikku jumped off of it, and ran off...hopefully, she thought, Yuna wouldn't have been watching her...

...she suddenly turned, and sprinted at Yuna, intending to grab her!

She was acting without hesitation now, but she could already tell this would hit her hard once the adrenaline wore off.

He didn't deserve to get the brunt of her anger. He was actual quite kind (not to mention his 'son' was ADORABLE). She tried to calm down a bit before talking. "I still think it would be faster if we go above ground" she said.

“Hey, there you guys are!”

Sama had managed to stumble his way through the pathway of makeshift tunnels that Wild Rose had dug under the city, and he had reunited with Crystal and Spork.

Unfortunately, he was still covered in blood, fresh scars and bruises as he wandered towards them, waving happily.

I'm sure this will go over well.

[Central Streets]

Scar and Captain Carrot were about to square off in battle. Scar looked like he was ready to rip this soldier in half with his crazy boom boom man hand of doom (doom).

Then something rather unexpected happened.

A relatively short young man with blond hair jumped forward and kicked Scar in the face with his knee!

Scar fell backwards, his sunglasses knocked off and his nose bleeding.

“Are you people crazy? Get the hell out of here!” Edward Elric yelled out towards Carrot, Galv and Melanie. “Al, get them back!”

A giant suit of armor soon showed up, running over towards the kids. “Are you okay? This is really unsafe, please come with me!”

"I imagine the war itself could end without that...

“No, Sir Didymus.” Garnet shook her head, and she suddenly sounded very serious as she stood and turned, looking over to him.

“Whoever is behind this... that woman... and whoever else is manipulating things... it is clear they have involvement in both my country and Amestris. Even if the combined might of Galdwin and Alexandria defeats Amestris, even if THIS war ends... we will have no peace if we allow these dark forces to survive. They will find a new nation... or they will resurface...”

She shook her head. “We MUST stop the true evil behind this, or we will never have peace.”

[Harbor]

Rikku had grabbed Yuna!

The giant sword-wielding Samurai was still rampaging and kicking Al Bhed butt, though.

“We MUST stop the true evil behind this, or we will never have peace.”

Didymus nodded.

"Of course, lady Garnet, we must expose the root of this. I just said, failure to do so could lead to a similar situation unfolding at a later time. Still, as you are well aware, we must not forget to try winning this as soon as possible...and on that subject..."

He paused.

"...could I ask something of a personal question? Or...well, I suppose it's as professional as it is personal...I actually have a number of questions, perhaps this is the least important of them...in fact, I suppose there are a number of things that need be said, perhaps, so that you can be sure you've steeled yourself for what's to come..."

When Rikku grabbed Yuna, she didn't hesitate.

She started dragging her towards a small boat with a makeshift engine-motorized, though-that they had brought along for a quick getaway...

Meanwhile, the Al Bhed who had been rushed by Yojimbo had been...decisively vanquished. At the least.

However, the machine now turned to face him/it (though its pilot was rather intimidated).

It fired some more things at the summon-explosive charges!

(Yeah, like that's gonna work. XD)

Gas mileage is pretty bad, but traffic jams aren't a problem.
