“Even IF Mustang agrees... as soon as you release her, he has no reason not to simply attack you again! Which means either you have to keep her as a hostage forever – at which point, sometime, he will attack... or you STILL have to fight a war, which doesn't help us END the war! Your plan will only make it harder to find a diplomatic solutions... there will be no negotiation if you make matters worse!”

Hilda paused.

"...and yet, the terms for her release could require Amestris to place itself in a tactically disadvantageous position if they sought to attack us. Even IF he wished to betray us, we could still gain something. But do you think the concept that this may be a tad shameful is entirely lost on me? And what indication do we even have that offering her as a goodwill gift would work? She would identify the people we sent to retrieve her as our operatives and then we would lose some of our valiant number. There are downsides like that to YOUR suggested alternative as well, avatar. Consider that, as for me, I must attempt to consider every argument...the points you make are worthy ones, but surely you of all people know we have little reason to trust Amestris' goodwill."

Madain Sari

Didymus paused.

"I confess, again, I am uncertain...I'd guess, even by my strict definition of it, that nothing evil is being taught there...at least, I'd hope not, and again, guess not, not if it's just..." he shook his head.

"...it's all confusing. But again, I think my guess would be that it's alright, though a part of me, perhaps the better part, says that it is best to avoid it just to be on the safe side...but regardless, I think that it may be best not to spy on them..."

Rikku, on the other hand, was much less contemplative or wound-up.

"Oooh! Awesome! Let's do it!" she said.

Didymus raised an eyebrow...

Melanie froze as Scar had almost cornered them....Despite the spell placed on her the girl seemed...Afraid.

Luckily a rather large man appeared, brandishing a sword and looking serious had appeared. The girl found herself pulling Galv and rushing behind him. She glared at Scar from her safe spot.

Central Underground

Crystal frowned, noticing the conversation getting heated rather quickly. She stood close to her friend, placing a hand on his shoulder. She knew how much Sama hated talking about what had happened to their people....That's when she knew the topic needed to be changed.

"Calm down" she said quietly. "This is getting out of hand"

Sama was incredibly angry at the moment. He hated to think that this woman was in charge of wild rose, and to think she was actually considered a move this stupid. He could imagine a horrible repercussion from this plan... they would only incur the wrath of the new Fuhrer, and insure that any chance of a peaceful end to the war that a new administration could mean, would be snuffed out.

As Crystal touched his shoulder, he paused. He felt himself calm a bit, but his blood was still boiling as he shouted to Hilda.

“Listen to me! With the new Fuhrer, there's at least a CHANCE of ending this war without more bloodshed! There's a chance of getting Mustang to the bargaining table... and even if he was the bastard who destroy my people, if it means ending the war, I'm willing to work towards peace... so no one else goes through what our people did...”

He shook his head. “Hilda... I won't let you do this.”

[Madain Sari]

“... Well, I'm going to spy on them. You can follow if you want.” Zidane shrugged, and jumped up into a small crawlspace in the attic above them, trying to find a way into the other room...

"Let me know if they're doing anything magical or dangerous or what have you." Didymus called after Zidane, and Rikku followed him.

Central underground

“Hilda... I won't let you do this.”

Hilda paused, and her guards moved to stand between her and Sama.

"Won't let me do this? Before the course of action is already decided upon, you're threatening me? And have you forgotten that Wild Rose exists to restore the independance of so many of Amestris' conquered lands? Ending the war it wages with Galdwin, though a noble enough goal, is not enough to ensure that. Have you lost your desire for freedom, avatar? Or is it simply not worth bloodshed to you? "

She sighed.

"Surely you would not suggest that we should help fight FOR Amestris rather than against it in hopes of gaining their goodwill. And yet you suggest that we should, in our struggle against Amestris' hold on our lands, offer them a token of goodwill?"

She paused.

"This would be laughed out of the council room. You of all people know that we have no reason to believe that he's ultimately any different from any other who has come before him. However, I can see you are insistant...so I'll tell you what: can you think of some way to test his character? Some way for us to see if he is indeed different from those before him? If you can find some way to demonstrate that a token of goodwill may actually be met favorably rather than a waste of our efforts, then I'm sure the council would listen to your advice on this matter..."

Have you lost your desire for freedom, avatar? Or is it simply not worth bloodshed to you? "

Sama shook his head. “You misunderstand me... I WILL find a way to free my people... but I will also see to it that their freedom is insured. Even if your plan succeeded and we forced Amestris to give up their lands through intimidation and kidnapping... it would only be a matter of time until they attacked us again.”

The boy paused, leaning against the wall. “... Kidnapping Hawkeye would likely make Mustang even more angry, and he would attack us... moreover than that, Mustang got his job when the Fuhrer was assassinated... even if we intimidated Mustang, and somehow he backed down and agreed to your demands... how long until one of his generals kills him and takes over? No... there are only two ways to insure the freedom of the conquered lands... either destroy Amestris, or reach an agreement. Amestris has more experience at war than any other nation... I do not believe they can be destroyed. But we may be able to find some agreement...”

"Surely you would not suggest that we should help fight FOR Amestris rather than against it in hopes of gaining their goodwill. And yet you suggest that we should, in our struggle against Amestris' hold on our lands, offer them a token of goodwill?"

The Avatar stepped forward, and he was suddenly a lot more calm. “I suggest that we do what is right. Kidnapping someone and holding them as a hostage is not wrong. If you fight with the same evil tactics as Amestris, you are no better than they are... and if you stoop to their level, you have no more of a right to rule anyone than Fuhrer Bradley did.”

“However, I can see you are insistant...so I'll tell you what: can you think of some way to test his character?”

Sama paused, reflecting on that question. The boy turned his head, and looked at Crystal for a moment. He had, almost immediately, come up with an idea... but he knew that his friend would not like it.

Still... Sama believed that there could be peace. He did not fully understand why, but he believed that he could free his people without the need for bloodshed and death. He was both naïve and optimistic, and he truly believed there was a way to solve this long problem...

“... Yes. I can think of a way to test his character. Confront Mustang and ask him to met with the other leaders in Ankh-Morpork – neutral ground – for a peace summit. If he truly wants peace... he will go, and at least explore the option of ending the war... invite representatives of Galdwin and Alexnadria and Wild Rose... The other forces would send merely ambassadors and representatives, while Mustang would come himself. The fact that the Fuhrer would come to meet with representative instead of his counterparts and risk the chance of his own capture or death has to count for something... and there's something else...”

He paused. “... I will personally go to Mustang and invite him myself. He knows I am the Avatar... he saw me when they invaded the Bending Valley, and when I killed Bradley... if he is willing to let me walk back out of that room without killing or capturing me... and he is willing to come to the meeting in Ankh-Morpork... that will speak volumes of his character.”

Hilda listened as Sama spoke, and gradually her grin grew.

"Amestris' destruction between us and the Galdwinians, may not be entirely impossible...and frankly, I am uncertain that Amestris would willingly surrender its hold over our lands-control of which lends it some of its power-without being forced to on the losing end of a war. HOWEVER...your plan is bold, reckless, naive, and I think that what happens will be a measurement of the new fuhrer's character."

She paused.

"You have my approval, for whatever that is worth."

Madain Sari

Didymus leaned against the tower, head bowed. This was...an uncertain time. So he stood, remained, hoping and praying that what unfolded inside was nothing sinful...or dangerous.

Yeah....Crystal wasn't going to take this well.

"HAVE YOU GONE MAD!?" Crystal suddenly yelled, not able to stay quiet any longer, and intent on finding out just why her beat friend was willing to get himself killed for peace. "Mustang will kill you the second you stand before! He's not going to be interested in any sort of peace summit!"

Suddenly the girl grabbed Sama's shirt and pulled him so that she was looking at him. This might have been attractive any other time, but Crystal looked very Kanna-like right now.

"I'm NOT letting you do something so stupid! If you haven't notice Fuhrer Mustang isn't interested in seeking peace. He'll kill us ALL if he wanted to! And we're just as good as dead without you here! Don't you care about that!?"

Crystal then stepped back, crossing her arms over her chest in a huff.

Sama flinched the moment Crystal yelled. He knew he was in trouble, and he had expected her to be mad the instant he suggested the plan. The idea was a bit... insane, but at the same time, the boy felt like it was their best shot.

The next thing he knew, Crystal was gripping his shirt and fuming at him. Normally with their faces this close his face would have become pink and warm; but right now he was slightly afraid that she was going to slap him with a chunk of ice.

"I'm NOT letting you do something so stupid! If you haven't notice Fuhrer Mustang isn't interested in seeking peace. He'll kill us ALL if he wanted to! And we're just as good as dead without you here! Don't you care about that!?"

When she stepped back and said her peace, Sama paused, remaining calm and looking absolutely serious.

“... Of course I care about that. I realize I have responsibilities as the Avatar... but that's exactly why I have to do this. Think about it Crystal... back in the day, the four bending tribes hated one another. Waterbenders hated Firebenders... Airbenders hated Earthbenders... no one got along.”

Sama hesitated. “But then... they were united... by the Avatar. The Avatar looked past the differences of our tribes and saw that we should all live together, and work together... we were all the same, no matter what small differences we had...”

The boy grinned. “Well, that's no different than what I'm saying! Amestris... Galdwin... Alexandria... are those countries really that different than the four tribes were? We'll never find peace unless somebody steps up and tries to bring people together...”

He stepped forward, and took Crystal's hand. “I know it's dangerous... and I'm sure there's people smarter than me and better at speaking than me who could do this better... but I'm the Avatar. I have to try, right?”

The boy was naïve, optimistic and incredibly silly. At the same time, when his mind was made up, it stayed that way.

[Madain Sari]

Inside the sealed chamber, beyond the door, the two young women sat in silence. Yuna on the left, and Garnet on the right. In the center of the room was Aerith, who was now glowing a light green color.

“... It is important than you understand something... for generations, people have looked at the power of the summoners and misunderstood it – including our own people. Summons are not spells, and they are not deity's. They are simply embodiments of the forces of nature... great beasts who have powers beyond your ordinary monster – and intelligence as well.”

“I don't understand...” Garnet frowned. She had read about summoning a lot, and studied it, but what Aerith was saying... it sounded as if summons were no more than wild animals that somehow had incredible powers and intellect.

Yuna remained silent. The Yevonites worshiped the powers of the summons and those who called them... yet if what Aerith said was true, then were the Elder's and the Maester's wrong?

“Forget what you know. Forget the things you have read in ancient tomes, or the things told to you by the Maester's.” Aerith – almost as if she knew what they were thinking – added. “What is important is this... the summons themselves are not all-powerful or all-knowing. Most of them are neither good or evil... they follow commands of their masters.”

Aerith paused. “... You should go. You should return to your home, Garnet.”

“But I still do not know how to summon...” Garnet frowned.

“... Yes. You do... trust me, when it matters, you could do it.” Aerith smiled. She then paused, and waved her hand – the door to the room opening.

“Hey, if the summit is in Anhk-Morpork, I doubt Mustang would just try to kill Sama,” Spork said, stepping in. “Well, there's the Guild of Assassins...But I think the Avatar is someone they don't take contracts on...”

Ankh-Morpork's Guild of Assassins had a very short list of who they wouldn't take contracts on. Mostly heads of state. And Watch Commander Samuel Vimes.

“Plus, I doubt the Patrician wants Anhk-Morpork to be the center of a riot...If Mustang tried something there...well, there's a sizable Bender population there...”

-Central Streets-

Carrot frowned at Scar, shaking his head, “Unnatural? Magic is simply the use of natural phenomenon.”

At least, that's what Carrot believed, “As it is, I do not believe Amestries has any rules regarding the use of magic. Once more, I must ask you to stand down, or I will be forced to act.”

“Exactly!” Sama grinned as Spork raised a very good point. The boy was glad that they had someone with first hand knowledge of the incredibly insane city. Poor naïve Sama would probably end up broke and somehow dressed like a clown if he ventured into Ankh-Morpork on his own.

“The only time I'll be in ANY danger is when I go to the Fuhrer's mansion and invite Mustang... and hey, we're already IN Central! If something bad happens and he tries killing me... well, I can just run back to these tunnels!”

Sama believed this would be easy. … Yeah, did I mention he's naïve?

[Central Streets]

Scar glared to Carrot, his eyes narrowed dangerously and his hand flickering with red lightning.

“Fool... I cannot be swayed by the words of one such as you... and the laws I follow come not from the foolish men of this state, or any other! I do the divine work... the laws of the high priest of Ishvarl!”

Scar rushed at Carrot!

"Don't side with him!" Crystal yelled loudly, going red in the face and glaring between Spork and Sama. She then let out a loud exhausted groan, turning from them both.

"I REFUSE TO JUST STICK AROUND HERE AND WATCH YOU GET YOURSELF KILLED!" she yelled. "I'm outta here!"

She then turned to Spork. "Put me back above ground this instant!"

Sama frowned, his chest suddenly tightening. He stepped forward to Crystal, frowning.

“Wait Crystal, just wait! Please... try to understand... this is what I have to do!”

He frowned, crossing his arms. He hated to cause pain to her... she was more important to him than anyone, but he knew he had a responsibility to try his (insane) plan.

Sama frowned, letting out a small sigh. He took a step towards her, but then stopped and crossed his arms.

“... Crystal... you shouldn't go into Central! It's dangerous, you should stay here with Wild Rose...”

It was rather obvious that telling him to stay where it was safe was a little messed up when he was about to rush off on the most dangerous mission her could. He could tell she was mad...

“I promise you, I'll be fine... and this will work! If you don't believe me, I'll just have to prove it!”

Sama sighed.

Rikku looked on, amazed. She wasn't sure what Aerith was talking about, or if all that she was was true...but it was really interesting, she though. Yuna looked like she was really into it, at least.

Hilda shook her head at the debate now arguing.

"I would advice that you not burrow directly up out of the ground, not if we don't know who else may be watching..." she said. "...I do believe there is much wisdom in what your friend here says..." she indicated Crystal.

"...but ultimately what you do with yourself is not my affair. Try to survive, though, avatar. Your death or capture would do much to demoralize your people, many of whom are in Wild Rose's employ, even more...I bid you all, if you can, be blessed..." she said, and turned to leave.
