"I'll be okay, i'm tough" Melanie said with a smile, stepping back and looking around. "How about we try some target practice for a bita bit?" she asked "It'll give us both a chance to work on our powers"

The girl then looked around for Maddox who had slipped off earlier. She wondered if he could rig something up for them.

"Be right back, i'll go find the guy in charge" she said, rushing out of the training room in the direction she thought he went.

[...]

Jason gave a little nod, staying there for a moment and letting Erin have her way....But eventually his legs started to fall asleep so he made a move, carefully picking up the girl and taking her back to their room and setting her down on the bed. He then looked to his daughter.

"Solanna....I think it's time for you to sleep." Jason said with a tired smile, taking the baby from her mother's arms and walking her to the nursery. The baby gave a few annoyed whines but didn't protest too much as Jason turned out the lights and went back to Erin.

He stopped at the door frame. Conflicted. Erin was still out of it, which was obvious....But she as also showing him a great deal of affection. He was in love with her, and considering asking for her hand in marriage again....But he didn't want her to say yes unless she meant it.

He looked to his girlfriend....He also felt a bit of hormones kicking in...He groaned.

[...]

"Don't worry...I'll be there" Kanna muttered, waving off the older man. "Despite popular belief I do care about the children...I don't want them to hurt. The world is cruel..."

Taxxon Home World

Gwen groaned, watching as Ben transformed in one of her most hated aliens. "Why does Ben even try?" she asked, fanning her hand in front of her face. His smell was pretty strong....

Forest Planet

"Oh my....Goodness"

Cosmo moved from the teleporter, eyes wide as she looked around lush planet. There were plants everywhere: grass, trees, flowers, everything! She took a deep breath, taking in the sweet air.

"I feel so much stronger here..."

“Why don't we hike around and find a spot to relax in?”

"Oh yes! We should!" she said, turning back to Silver and grabbing his hand.

[Taxxon Home World]

They were surrounded. Outnumbered. Outgunned. Sama knew how bad this situation was.

“Everybody, we have to get inside!” Sama shouted as he shot at the nearest Taxxon. They couldn’t leave without the Chaos Emerald, could they?

[Forest Planet]

Vash shrugged, stuffing donuts into his face, and followed Silver and Cosmo while nom nom-ing.

[Haven]

Maddox was in his office, on his computer. He was reading a file… Kanna’s file. Not one the UTR had, but the one from NERV. How Maddox had gotten it was anyone’s guess.

“… That girl is her daughter…” Maddox frowned. “Does that mean…?”

He turned off the computer and stood up, heading back out in time to see Melanie appear.

“Ah, Ms. Narroh, what can I do for you?” Maddox asked.

[Earth]

The shuttle landed. They were in a dry, desert area in the middle east. There were tall mountains ahead of them, which formed a valley. The fountain was supposed to be in that direction.

On the ground, waiting for them, were two men. The first was a tall man with dark hair who wore a simple dark jacket and jeans. The second was a tall, mountain of a man with his hair closely shaved down. His right arm was a robotic replacement, and he wore a uniform that displayed the Guardian seal.

Didymus cautiously stepped out, himself suited up.

"Gentlemen?" he asked, approaching them.

[Earth]

The tall man with the replacement arm stepped forward.

“I’m Horace Warfield.” He introduced himself. He was well known in the Guardians. He had fought numerous battles, and even lost his arm in combat. A few hours later, he was back on the battlefield.

“I’ll make this short and sweet. We’ve had an unexpected ripple. The nearest populated area is more than fifty miles from here. You ever heard of the Red Tags?” Warfield asked.

Alouette frowned. “I have. They’re a criminal group. In the past they’ve committed crimes on Earth and other UTR planets. Sometimes they try to veil their crimes with political messages, but the message changes often and there’s no pattern or consistency.”

Warfield nodded. “That’s them. Their called the ‘Red Tags’ because they wear very outdated military power armor which they’ve spray painted red ‘x’’s on the chest of their armor, just over their hearts. It’s a taunt.”

Asuka tilted her head. “… Could only be a taunt. Anyone with a brain knows you don’t aim at the chest. Even if it’s outdated power armor, it should still repel most bullets and lasers.”

Warfield paused, looking at Asuka. He gave a grunt and then nodded. “Yeah. It’s to try to taunt our boys into shooting where their armor is toughest. I always tell my men to aim for the joints, the weakest spot in the armor. Anyway, we’re not here to discuss tactics. The fact is, there’s a group of about twenty-five Red Tags who are using a system of caves in the mountains as a hideout. Apparently the only route to this ‘fountain’ goes through that valley.”

The second man frowned, and finally spoke. “Yes. That’s unfortunately true.” He turned to Didymus and the others. “I’m Daniel Rifkin. All this military business… well, I just want to take these poor people to be healed. That’s all.”

Warfield ignored him. “The odds are, the Red Tags aren’t interested in going after us. They know we’ve got them out gunned. But when I heard you were taking Rifkin and his group down this way, I wanted to give a head’s up.”

Didymus paused, looking over Warfield. To meet a veteran officer in the Terran Guard was always quite the experience. While the Guardians were TECHNICALLY part of the regular command structure, they operated largely in their own units (though those units would themselves often be serving alongside/embedded in larger, regular units when not guarding Earth), and their quality was unquestionable. Again, to meet a veteran officer in them was always...

-Didymus stopped his mental gushing.

"It's good to meet you." he said. "I'm Didymus *last name*."

He paused and listened to the description of the situation on hand.

"Well, it seems the ideal solution would be to just wait until you've cleared the Red Tags out of the area..." he said.

[Earth]

“That WOULD be the ideal solution, but we have a problem.” Warfield explained. “The Red Tags don’t have the numbers or the firepower to be a real threat, but they have a terrain advantage. The series of caves they’re using connects between both sides of the valley. They’re like rats, running and hiding… only these rats have sniper rifles.”

Warfield shrugged his shoulders. “It’s going to take at least a few days to clear them out from this area. Just too much ground to cover.”

Rifkin nodded. “And that IS a problem, General. I know I’m not an expert on military matters, and I hate to think that we’d be putting any of you in danger… but these people are suffering. They are terrified of what’s happened to them. They have begged me to take them to the fountain as quickly as possible.”

Warfield just sighed. “… That’s between you and the Colonel. Personally, I don’t think the Red Tags will want to come after you. They know the Guardians are here. They know we’re looking for them. You keep your marines in plain sight, they’ll hide from you. And if they are stupid enough to attack… then my men will move in.”

Didymus frowned.

"...a few days, sir? You can't call in anything that can stand up to that and smoke them out? Surely..."

He paused.

"...well, if this is your appraisal of the situation, sir."

He turned to Rifkin.

"Ah, maybe this is for the best. Gives those refugees some time to calm down, maybe. Why do they even NEED this fountain, anyway?"

He paused.

"Are they just reacting out of fear? And what exactly, if I may ask, are they hoping for...?"

Melanie smiled at Maddox, before motioning back at Galv. "Galv and I were wondering if we could have targets set up to practice on" she said sweetly.

"What!?" Jade exclaimed, whipping around to Sama "We can't just leave!"

"Not leave, but get out of the middle of this!" Gwen then interrupted

-Haven-

“Can we program them into the computer or something?” Galv wondered, “Or is there a different area we need to go?”

Erin was laid down and Solanna put to sleep. Now separated from Jason and her daughter, Erin began to shiver, missing their warmth. She curled under the blankets now, though she still seemed cold...

“I find that comforting to hear,” Jacob smirked, “Now unless you want to sleep on the couch, there is a room available for you to nap in.”

“Rica, wait a moment...” Ethan said, grabbing Rica's arm, “For all we know she's working on the same thing I'm working on, a way to neutralize the Ray Sphere...Don't go assuming she's working on something wrong. If you come on too confrontational, then you're not going to get anything out of her.”

-Taxxon Home World-

Jimi had snuck into one of the warehouses, grinning as he found some of the blue armor that the elite Hork Bajir units wore. He had gone away from the others earlier, in order to find some tech. The Yeerks were very good at taking the technology of others and either giving some improvements, or modifying it to make it more deadly. Their Dracon Beams, for example, were based off of Andalite Shredders.

He heard noises, yelling, looking up. It seems the others had been found. Fine, it meant he had a distraction. He could let them deal with it, steal a Yeerk ship, then head for his base.

He paused, staring at the blue armor, then looked back up.

“...Damnit...” he muttered, then hurried out, towards the disturbance.

The Taxxon screeched as Sama shot it. It was only wounded, but not for long...

The other Taxxons turned to their wounded brethen, jumping at it, devouring their compatriot as it was still alive...

“Arrrr, wooo, arrrr,” Ben commented to Sama. Basically he was saying this is the biggest reason he never wanted to turn into a Taxxon.

He then darted forward, smacking back a Hork Bajir, then turned to Jade, lowering himself so she could climb on.

-Forest Planet-

“I've never seen so much wildlife before...” Silver said, “Where I'm from I'm usually on ships...or fighting the Metarex on the front line...”

He sighed softly, shaking his head. There was a lot the universe had to offer, it seems...

-Earth-

Omega was quiet, assessing the situation with the data provided.

Omega considered simply collapsing the cave entrances as they moved, either trapping the Red Tags or forcing them out. And then he remembered his own past, Eggman keeping him locked away, trapped...As a robot, who didn't even need food or water, he had hated it. Forcing that on others as well... He couldn't. It was one thing to kill an opponent in open combat. It was, for Omega, a glorious way to go, an honorable thing. But that idea...

“If you need a soldier to flush out enemy combatants or provide the point, I would be honored to volunteer,” Omega finally said, saluting his superior officers. In open combat Omega was very good. Planning something like this...not so much.

[Haven]

Maddox nodded, still smiling a happy persona, even with sinister intentions creeping into his mind.

“Of course.” He said, and he typed a few keys on a wrist-mounted computer device he wore. After a moment, several targets appeared in the larger training room.

“They are holograms, but they detect a hit and will display it on the counter.” He pointed to the wall, where a screen had flicked to life. Melanie and Galv’s names were written on it, with a counter next to each of them.

[…]

Rica frowned, and nodded slowly.

“I suppose you’re right…” He said grumpily. He was suspicious. He didn’t like the idea of ANYONE furthering the research that NERV had started. It had already caused Rica too many headaches.

[Taxxon Home World]

Sama gasped at the sight in front of him. He had fought in several wars, but this ranked among one of those most horrible things he had ever witnessed.

“Okay, let’s get that Emerald and get the hell off this planet.” Sama fired several more beams, trying to keep the cannibalistic creatures away from them.

[Forest Planet]

Vash frowned at Silver’s words.

“It’s… that bad, huh?” Vash shook his head. “… Don’t worry! We can stop the Metarex!”

[Earth]

Warfield gave a little chuckle to Omega.

“I appreciate the offer, but it’s not necessary. These Red Tag bastards won’t come out in the open. You guys should be fine if you hurry, and keep an eye open for snipers. But they won’t want to engage with marines. They’re cowards.”

Rifkin, meanwhile, frowned to Didymus. “They’re hoping that the fountain can undo what was forced on them at New Marais. They need it because they believe it will help. If you wish to come with us, then do so, but we are going, today, with or without you.”

Didymus paused.

"Sir, if you don't mind my asking, why are the Guardians waiting around? You have what it takes to deal with this, so I imagine there's another reason...?" he asked.

. “They’re hoping that the fountain can undo what was forced on them at New Marais. They need it because they believe it will help. If you wish to come with us, then do so, but we are going, today, with or without you.”

The colonel heaved a sigh.

"Well, interesting...but why? Is this simply a decision they're making out of fear? Are they truly sure this is what they want? Make no mistake, I'm all for undoing that entire fiasco, to what extent we can, but...I know that others don't really see it that way, and I'm sure that you've heard the arguments in FAVOR of preserving this development at any cost...not that I agree with them, but I suppose I'm just hoping that this is a decision they've come to after reflection and, well, decision, as opposed to just a knee-jerk..."

Melanie looked over to the targets and the displays that would count their hits. The teenage girl was highly impressed.

"Oh wow! That's so cool!" she exclaimed with a large grin "Thank you!"

She then rushed back to Galv, her hands glowing dark. She looked over to the redhead boy. "You ready? Most hits win."

Taxxon Home World

"Oh awesome!" Jade exclaimed, climbing on. Despite the excitement she wrinkled her nose "Oh ewww you smell like wet dog"

"SAAAAMMA! We can't just leave the people they've taken!" Crystal repeated, this time more forcefully. She hated abandoning people (er...creatures) in need, even if they were under the influence of super creepy homicidal aliens.

"We don't have time!" Gwen yelled

"I'm not leaving!" Crystal exclaimed back just as fast.

Forest Planet

Cosmo turned to the two "My home planet used to be just like this...It's just like my palace...."

She gave a little sigh, before turning back in front of them. "We must hurry, I can make something for lunch"

[Haven]

Maddox just nodded and turned his back on her, heading over towards the little room on the side. He typed a few notes onto his computer, still watching the two.

[Taxxon Home World]

Sama frowned. He knew why Crystal wanted to help… but he wasn’t sure it was possible. Ben didn’t seem to think so, and the standard procedure for this situation would be to get the Emerald and get off the planet…

… but Sama was never one for the standard procedure.

“Okay… Okay! We’ll try to stun as many as we can. We can beam them into the cargo hold of the Ragnarok and restrain until the yeerks have to leave their brains.”

That would be three days. And it would not be easy.

[Forest Planet]

Vash frowned as he heard Cosmo talk about her planet. He remembered back to the ship… and he thought of Rem.

“I have lunch covered!” Vash held up the box of half-eaten donuts.

That is not lunch.

[Earth]

“We ARE dealing with this, Colonel.” Warfield responded. “My men are combing the tunnels now. But like I said, there’s a lot of them. We’re trying to flush these little bastards out into the open. I don’t want to engage them in the caves. There’s too many ways they can trap the tunnels. We’re smoking them out, and it’s gonna work. I did the same thing to Zerg Nydus Worms back in the day. It’s slow, but it works, and it minimizes casualties on our side.”

Rifkin meanwhile shrugged his shoulders.

“Colonel, my business isn’t to decide anything for anyone. I have merely provided them with an option. Whether people wish to preserve what happened to them or if they want to change it… that is their own decision to make.”

"...at any rate, I have, I'm afraid, been asked to accompany you."

“Alright, if I win, you owe me a kiss!” Galv said, grinning to Melanie. Maddox was probably choking on air in the background from these two.

Electricity sparked in his hands. “Ready...set...go!”

Lightning shot forward, hitting a target!

“I'll bring it up...” Ethan said, “I'll see if she's working on the same thing I'm working on...”

Just then Claire reappeared, handing the two a few drinks.

“...Claire...” Ethan said, frowning, “I saw the data on your computer earlier...I'm curious...Are you working on something to negate Ray Sphere Energy too? We should compare notes...”

Claire frowned, then shook her head. “No...I'm not.”

A pause, and she looked towards the two, sighing, “And no, I'm not working on furthering NERV's research or goals either. It's something...private. And it's not something I'm going to share...”

-Taxxon Home World-

“Are you an idiot?!”

Jimi appeared, firing blasts of lasers from his suit, knocking back several Yeerks who were advancing, “You're not going to be able to help these things! You need to split up!”

“HOLD!”

The blue armored Hork Bajir held up it's hand, and the Yeerk forces, excluding the Taxxons who were eating their brethren, stopped, pulling back.

The Hork Bajir jumped forward, walking forward.

“You...humans...and...a Vulpimancer?” the Hork Bajir began, staring at Wildmutt. “You are a long way from any help. I do not know why you are here, but if you surrender, you will be allowed to join the ranks of the powerful Yeerk Empire. If you resist...you will be destroyed...”

-Forest Planet-

“Ummm...I think I'll skip on the donuts...” Silver said to Vash, rubbing the back of his head.

Soon the three would come to a field, where the sun was shining and it seemed rather peaceful.

Maybe TOO peaceful? I dunno.
