I can't see what you're imagining
-Colony 101-

Upstairs

“I...” Erin paused, looking up at Jason, “Maybe...I...Maybe this was a mistake...maybe I should just go...Everything I touch...just...fails...I can't do anything right! I wasn't a good NERV agent, and I'm not good at...at being a person! I can't do anything right...”

Erin sighed, then looked back down at the ground, “You should probably go...before your mom yells again...”

Downstairs

“...He's talking to Erin...” Walter said quietly to Melanie, so Kanna wouldn't hear.

Ethan, seizing an opportunity, took a seat next to Kanna at the table. Sneaky guy.

-Zohar: Burke's Office-

“A Time Lord?” Ben/Swampfire said, eyes wide, “But...The Doctor said all the Time Lords were killed!”

He looked wary though, but he wasn't worried about the gun...Though he was worried about the others. He could battle just fine...

“...Yah, I can take you on!” Ben/Swampfire answered. Of course, he couldn't kill him...Not a Time Lord. The Doctor would want to know about this!

Goofy and Donald shared a glance, ready to fight.

-Colony 049: Peterson's Tent-

“...What is it?” Peterson wondered, looking at Rinoa with a slight sigh. He had been busy dealing with these Yeerks, and the U.T.R. as well. Half the soldiers saw him in awe. Half of the modern tactics in the books were penned by him. The other half still thought of him as a traitor, but didn't do anything outside of simply ignore him.

Didymus met Sama's glare with one of his own.

"I don't know how things go in Philanthropy..." he said. "...but first off, you WILL mind your tone with your superiors while under my command."

"With that being said, I apologize if I misconstrued your words, but you seemed to be rather critical of our orders, to the point where it sounded like you believed that playing all this defense was a waste, or at least, something of a mishandling, of our efforts. And perhaps a point that I have not sufficiently communicated is that, again EarthCom has not informed me off all their operations. For all I know, there are deep space probes sweeping the galaxy right now, locating enemy positions as we speak. Or special forces teams infiltrating their ships, or probes following their fleets, or something. Again, EarthCom HAS NOT told me of all its operations, only some. I have little need to know how we're finding them, and as such, they've kept me out of the loop. Perhaps all these scouting missions you speak of are being carried out, and I've few problems, if any, with that, but for now, at least, our main focus is on putting out fires here before we go after the arsonists."

"And if you disagree with me, or are pointing out an error I have made, fine, but again, you WILL do so in a respectful manner with me or with anyone who outranks you while you're under my command." he said.

Inwardly, he was angry, or at least frustrated. Couldn't he have one dinner conversation in this series of conflicts that DIDN'T involve heated arguments and trying to enforce proper formality?

[Zohar: Burke’s Office]

Burke gave a chuckle.

“The Doctor wasn’t aware that I survived. Ah, but I knew him… I knew the Doctor well. Believe me, Ben… you might think you stand a chance against me, but you do not.”

Burke looked at the group. Jordan already had his laser pistol in his hand, and was standing in front of Eva.

Burke just laughed. “You don’t get it, do you? Fight me. Go ahead. I OWN this casino. What do you think happens to you if any of you hurt me?”

Burke grinned, and looked to chaos. “KOS-MOS will do as I command… or all of you will die.”

[Colony 049: Peterson’s Tent]

Rinoa looked to Peterson, and extended a hand for him to shake.

“It’s very interesting to meet you, sir. I’m Rinoa Heartilly. I had hoped you had a few minutes to spare?”

TRS Crusader: Captain’s Table]

Sama shook his head. “At least in Philanthropy my opinion matters. And yes, I am critical of our orders, because I know how good the people on this ship are. I believe we are being wasted with our current assignment. I think we have the skills and the resources to find the Metarex base and bring this war to a quicker end, therefore saving countless lives. I care about THAT more than I do rank or orders, SIR.”

Didymus kept his eyes narrowed. It was clear that Sama had been sarcastic with his last "sir".

"That's the kind of attitude that'll earn you extra duty after dinner, Sama. This is your last warning. You've already got some cleanup duties afterward, this is your last warning before I start stacking more on.

With that being said, do you disagree with our orders? Because right now, our orders are to get to Mobius and aid in the defense and evac ops in that region-which are insufficient right now, hence, why we're being sent. I take it this goal meets with your...approval? Again, you now are suggesting that some other fleet should take our place, and we should sweep the unknown sectors? That's not the way it's going down. Again, we're covering our bases now. In fact, though, I'm not certain if all the Republic's forces ARE being tasked with defense, some may actually be ordered to forward battlefronts or to sweep the unknown regions. Either way, though, we have our orders, and this is the military. We carry them out. Again, I'm confident you wouldn't rather we leave the mobians to the metarex, even IF you'd rather someone ELSE went to relieve them."

Sama frowned once again as well.

"Of course I want to help Mobius... but what I want is to follow the Metarex after we force them to retreat from Mobius. It's the easiest way to find the location of their base."

Upstairs

“You should probably go...before your mom yells again...”

"Eh, she ALWAYS yells. I'm used to it by now" Jason said with a shrug "Really though, I hope you don't take anything she said to heart Erin...She's complicated. She's just mad at the world or something, and likes to take it out on everyone around her. Don't let her make you think you aren't a good person....Because you are."

He paused and put a hand on her shoulder. He could hear talking from downstairs.

"I can't make her apologize, but I can let you know that you are worth being here...Geez, sorry, I probably sound like a Hallmark card or something..."

Downstairs

When Melanie walked in after Galv and Walter the girl noticed her mother who was debating between another glass of wine or coffee. Melanie couldn't help but to rush over, hugging her mother as tight as she could.

"Momma you're okay!"

Kanna stiffened, not really knowing how to react. "O-of course I am" she looked to Rica in the kitchen. "A-and coffee." she decided, she didn't need to look like a mess around her daughter.

Didymus nodded.

"If we force them to retreat, depending on our own condition and the condition of the mobians, maybe we will. Maybe TerrInt's going to track them in ways they haven't bothered to tell me about. Maybe. Again, I don't know exactly what we'll do after the battle, but let's focus on winning it first, hmm?"

Colony 049: Peterson's tent

Quistis simply stood, regarding Peterson and Rinoa. She was...edgy...about all that would occur.

chaos shook his head slowly.

"No, Burke... Perhaps you are right. Perhaps this place IS full of soldiers under your command, suits of Power Armor, full of weapons and technology that certainly COULD put anyone lesser on their heels and make them cower before you. But you're forgetting something. This is KOS-MOS we are talking about here. The one you are calling your weapon, the one I am calling a closer friend than any other. And perhaps... It is time for HER to make a choice."

He let go of KOS-MOS's shoulder and slowly settled back, his left food sliding along the ground, hands loose in front of him, taking some sort of unknown and unidentified combat stance. He closed his eyes and concentrated for a second, re-opening them as they began to glow. The air behind him charged, and a slight "wind" began to blow across him as air began to swirl about in a random pattern.

"This time, you have the choice, KOS-MOS. You have met the man. You see him now, and he names you his weapon while the rest of us are useless. What do you choose? Do you stay here? Become the weapon he wants you to be? Or... Do you want to find a purpose of YOUR OWN? Find out where you FEEL you belong?"

His left hand moved so it was facing Burke, palm flat, right in the apparent way of the gun Burke was pointing at them.

"Your choice. Whatever you choose, I will follow. If you will follow this man, I will as well. If you will find your own path, I will be there. Whatever you decide, KOS-MOS, know that I shall ALWAYS remain a steadfast companion as long as you would have me."

[Colony 101]

Rica gave a grin to Kanna, and handed her a cup of coffee. He had already prepared some, just in case she decided to sober up.

Then he looked to Melanie. “Don’t you worry, your mother is just fine. And I’ll make sure nothing bad happens to her here.”

[Zohar: Burke’s Office]

Burke watched chaos and KOS-MOS, but his expression remained unchanged. He looked around the group. Then, slowly, he put away his Staser Pistol, as if he was surrendering.

“… Foolish, stupid chaos. Do you believe I would allow KOS-MOS to walk into my office if I believed for a second that she posed a threat to me? Do you think ANY of you would end up here if I thought I was in the least bit of danger?”

Burke laughed. “Stupid boy. KOS-MOS is the reason none of you have a prayer.”

KOS-MOS looked to Burke, and then to chaos. Burke wanted her only as a weapon… just like everyone else had. He, chaos, on the other hand, had just called her a friend… a friend closer than any other.

“… Mister Burke, I cannot stay with you. You may have given me life, but I choose not to be your weapon. I instead choose to go with these new friends of mine. Goodbye, Mr. Burke.”

KOS-MOS turned to leave. Burke laughed once more, and held up a small device. He pressed a button, and suddenly KOS-MOS screamed and collapsed on the ground.

Jordan had seen enough. He stepped forward and raised his laser pistol at Burke, but when he did, several soldiers came charging in the room and started firing at the group. Jordan turned and shot back at them, but noticed one of them shooting at Molly!

He jumped at Molly, pushing her out of the way.

KOS-MOS, meanwhile, felt her head burning hot. She felt like she was passing out… but still awake at the same time.

Burke had moved to the back of the room, where he stood on a small square on the floor. It produced a force-field around him, keeping him perfectly safe.

[TRS Crusader]

Sama gave a sigh.

“We’ll win the battle… like I said, the people on this ship have an impressive list of skills.”

He shook his head. “I’m sorry if I came off as… upset… I just don’t know how many more battlefields I can bare to see. War has always been tough, but these Metarex take butchery and barbarisim to a new level… I just want to see it end as soon as possible.”

Didymus regarded Sama for a moment, then nodded.

"Of course you do. We all do. Yes, the metarex surpass even the pirates in...butchery...

People...caged and branded like livestock, huddling, or screaming, as the pirates laughed and...

He gave a visible shrudder. A lot of his memories about the Pirate Conflicts did that to him.

"Yes, this is terrible. We all want to end this quickly. But I think you may have gathered by now...this war will not be won easily...and apology accepted, but please, watch your respect. I don't...I don't want to have to hurl disciplinary action at you, but...well, I'd prefer if we were reliving the old days rather than losing our friendship..."

Rachel was smiling sweetly. She always liked it when those two made up.

“Don’t you worry, your mother is just fine. And I’ll make sure nothing bad happens to her here.”

Melanie looked up at her mother and paused. Kanna's cheeks were a bit red, she woman glaring into the kitchen at the back of Rica's head.

"Mom, are you sure you're okay? You look a little re-"

"Sit down, it's time to eat" Kanna interrupted, taking a step back from her daughter and taking her own seat. Melanie frowned but did as she was told, taking a seat by Galv.

The room erupted in gunfire and Eva felt a pair of hands push her down. She spun around quickly to see Jordan who was busy shooting back at the men. Eva stayed low since she had no means of defense and didn't even know how to hold a weapon properly, but made her way over to KOS-MOS, trying to help the girl.

Upstairs

Erin took a deep breath, shuddering as she did so, closing her eyes.

“Thank...thank you...” Erin said, “That...does mean a lot to me...”

She paused, then leaned forward and gave the taller boy a hug, squeezing him for a few seconds, then stepping back.

“Okay...let's...get dinner.”

Kitchen

Galv smiled to Melanie as she sat by him.

Ethan sighed, shaking his head, having taken one of the seats next to Kanna earlier.

-Zohar: Burke's Office-

“Hey!” Ben/Swampfire yelled, fire coming from his hands, throwing fireballs at the soldiers.

Goofy produced a shield, blocking the blasts with it, Donald behind him, holding up an odd device.

He held it up, and electricity sparked from it, shooting downwards unto one of the soldiers.

Ben then turned to Burke, and fired more...fire, at him, but was unable to bust through!

There had to be a way...some alien in his Omnitrix...

-Colony 049-

“I have some time...Who are you though? And what is it you want to ask me?” Peterson wondered.

Zohar: Burke's Office

The moment Burke put away his pistol, chaos knew trouble was brewing. The man was too cunning, he had too many options here on his ground... TOO many. The moment he started talking about KOS-MOS being the reason, chaos knew something bad was brewing, and the energy about him whipped into a frenzy, blue traces of power showing up in a storm around him like wisps of light dragged in a high wind.

"What are you..."

And then, KOS-MOS proclaimed her independence. The white-haired boy couldn't help but smile widely at her decision and hardened his stance, ready for anything...

But he was NOT ready for Burke. Of course, now that he thought about it, he had been a fool. Walking into the deathtrap with Burke holding all the big cards. He thought they could have a chance, but that chance was slimmer than he realized. And the moment Burke took out that remote, chaos knew that everything was going to hell in a handbasket.

He had to do something. He HAD to.

So, for the first time in ages, for the first time in a few long years of travel, jumping, watching, simply aiding from the sidelines with a comment or two, chaos acted. The power around him stilled for just a moment and coalesced, extending from his back as the energy began to grow in magnitude, collecting more and more... And forming a pair of magnificent, glowing, angelic-looking wings made purely out of some strange energy. Whipping both wings to the sides and spreading them to their fullest extent, chaos hopped backwards, just enough to reach KOS-MOS and kneeling beside her, wings spread outward behind him.

As the soldiers started to fire, the wings stayed up as if to shield against the multitude of handheld energy weapons, both lasers and plasma rifles. The energy blasts began to impact the wings... And vanish. There was no impact, no ripple. The energy just VANISHED. he reached out to KOS-MOS, before shooting an angry glare at Burke.

This was bad. He needed time. He needed time to concentrate, to focus, and that time was SEVERELY limited. He needed to somehow focus entirely on KOS-MOS, and that was not something he could afford while protecting others. So he settled for stalling. He needed time for the energy to stabilize...

So he spoke.

"What did you do to her, Burke? This is different from what I remember. What have you changed against the Dark Professor's wishes?"

Sama gave a small smile.

“… I think it’ll take a lot more than some arguments to lose our friendship… although when exactly have I ever had respect for my superior officers?”

He said it in a joking way, although there was SOME truth to it.

Colony 101

Rica had turned in time to catch the red twinge in Kanna’s cheeks. It brought a huge grin to his face, but he decided not to say anything that might cross the line in front of Melanie.

Sure, Rica was a killer, a mercenary and he was trying to hook up with Kanna. Still, he had raised Felix, so he knew what it was like to be a parent… and that was something even he wasn’t going to make light of.

“And what would you like for your meal, Melanie?” Rica asked.

Zohar: Burke’s Office

Ben’s fireballs had slowed the soldiers a bit, but they were wearing highly-advanced armor, and it did provide protection. A few of them had fallen, thanks to Ben, Jordan and Donald, but a couple others were holding strong.

KOS-MOS, meanwhile, began to scream. “chaos… help… me… he wants me… to… kill you all…”

Burke simply laughed at chaos’ questioning.

“What did I do? I made an insurance policy, chaos! I’m a Time Lord! The Dark Professor’s technology is most impressive, but so is my know-how! I installed an override to insure that I could control KOS-MOS in an emergency. She is my puppet, chaos! She is my property, and now, she is the instrument of your destruction!”

Colony 049

Rinoa grinned to Peterson.

“Like I said, my name is Rinoa Heartilly. What I want is to ask you about the Rebellion you led. I wish to change the ways things are in the Republic… not through violence, but through diplomacy. However, before I could do that, I need the knowledge of men like you, sir.”

Didymus sighed again, albeit this time in a more friendly manner.

"Indeed. And perhaps I've been too lenient with you in the past. Although, as I recall, you followed orders often enough during the...heheh...the LAST time we were heading to Mobius..."

Colony 049

Quistis nodded.

"Indeed, but you may recall, Mr. Peterson, that Rinoa herself was once a very active supporter of your rebellion...she was in fact one of its operatives, I believe."

She ran through a list of engagements she had heard Rinoa had participated in.

"Rinoa..." she asked. "...how many battles and activites were you involved in, anyway?"

She paused, reflecting on something else.

"And Sama's CO...how many times was he on the opposite side, anyway?"
This could provide even more insight into just how tense Rinoa had been earlier.

"Oh yes, and Mr. Peterson, my name is Quistis Trepe, schoolteacher, and, well...former SeeD instructor." she said.
