Dear All

This forum is a ZetaBoards forum. It was an Invision Free forum but I moved it (upgraded?) because, I thought, the ZetaBoard forum offered more features to its users.

Unfortunately, it has become apparent that there is now the issue of posters not receiving an email notification to their original post. You know the sort of thing - when your email inbox gets plastered with 'warnings' about people replying to your posting.

Now whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is up to you. If you're a keen activist to this forum I guess you come on here from time to time and simply check what's new, look at any replies you may have, and continue to post. If you're not a regular you may forget to check and rely on getting an emailed mind jogger, which of course never arrives.

Here's what ZetaBoards havd to say about it after I voiced my unhappiness on the subject. I think email notification would be handy, especially since each individual could turn it off if in their Preferences if they didn't require it.

Can encourage inactive members. Allows a user to post 1 topic and then leave with no intention of coming back to the forum except to get his answer.

Too many subscriptions slows down posting. If hundreds of people are tracking a forum or topic then a new topic or reply can take several seconds to minutes to post while emails are sent.

Interferes with delivery of important emails. Password reset and email validation emails are much more important to be delivered promptly. Some ISPs limit the number of emails they receive from one server. Thus subscription notices in large amounts can hold up or block more important emails.

Generates spam complaints. The majority of spam complaints we receive are from people who have subscribed by email and then didn't like getting emails when replies or topics were posted. Spam complaints can lead to other legitimate important emails being put in a user's spam box instead of inbox.

Not ideal for active members. An active member who just wants a list of interesting topics to remember will prefer the list of subscribed topics currently offered. An active member who wants to be notified of replies or new topics will prefer receiving a PM notice since he is already on the board.

So there you have it. There are ways around it, of course, like moving and starting again with another host (that's a lot of work), but I'm not sure right now. I'd rather hear your thoughts, even if you're a first time poster (and please, don't expect an email notification of reply :happynod: )

Paul.
