Well, if trees snapped, cars crushed, your neighbour's house roof in your backyard, no power for up to three days and water up to your chest so you have to swim over your furniture (the stuff that doesn't float down the road) to get out the front door - or windows that are no longer there due to the hail and wind - plus mud slides and land subsidence bothers you... Geez, what a week! Yes, we're fine. Others, not so. You've seen the pictures and heard the reports. Devastating over quite a lot of the state of Queensland. The worst we personally suffered was some tree and plant damage - big branches falling close to one of the cars (we heard the crack and watched as a big one crashed to the ground) and small flooding around the house, plus power out for a little while. Mrs Pom's outside tending to the broken plants as I speak and it's still fairly breezy out there. Our house is cyclone rated but, to be honest, I don't think it would be here if we'd have suffered what those others near us did. Anyway, everything under it and around it isn't cyclone proof and that's what causes a lot of the damage. This is a wake up call. Looks like I'll be spending time building Fort Knox 2.It was only a short while ago that fire seemed the most likely threat. Nuthin' like living on the edge! Let's hope we don't see the same for a long time yet. |

Sunshine Coast snake on a plane thanks to animal transport company 12 Nov 2008 Jet Pets Animal Transport has helped to return a scaly hitch-hiker to its home on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast after a trans-Australian adventure of several thousand kilometres. This particular snake on a plane is a carpet python that stowed away under the bonnet of a car being transported to Adelaide from Diddillibah in Queensland. The car had been stored for around six weeks before being put on the back of a carrier bound for South Australia. Car owner Mr Knight from South Australia got something of a surprise when he picked up the car and found the python in its engine bay. Mr Knight called the South Australian Department for Environment and Heritage, who arranged for the snake to be cared for at Cleland Wildlife Park near Adelaide until it could be flown back to Queensland. Nick Rigby, director of wildlife for Queensland’s Environmental Protection Agency, said that after a long journey the intrepid python was headed back to where it belonged. “I’d say this snake has been extremely lucky, as crawling into a car’s engine bay is not generally a recipe for a long and healthy life. “We are very grateful to Jet Pets for agreeing to give the 1.2 metre python a free ride home. “The company was extremely quick to help us out and have been very flexible in arranging to get it to EPA rangers on the Sunshine Coast,” he said. “I’d also like to thank the South Australian Department of Environment and Heritage for looking after the reptile. It has been fantastic the way so many people have pulled together to get it home safely,” Mr Rigby said. The python was transported from Cleland Wildlife Park to Adelaide airport this morning, and flown from there to Brisbane. Jet Pets has arranged for it to be picked up and transported to an EPA ranger on the Sunshine Coast on late Wednesday afternoon, who will release it back into the wild on Thursday morning. Adam Stammers from Jet Pets said his team was a passionate group who loved animals of all shapes and sizes. “Being able to help out with the relocation of the python back to its natural habitat has been a rewarding process for everyone involved,” he said. “The python is in good hands for its return trip to Queensland.” Released by: Environmental Protection Agency |

It did Kim. And now it's 25 degrees and rising on day 3 of summer. We're expecting a top of 31 today and 34 tomorrow. Yuk! How are things your end? Settling in for Christmas? Any plans on coming over in 2009? Paul |

Hi Paul Yep I'm all ready for crimbo - just got to wrap my pressies and I'm done! Its my daughter Emily's birthday on the 20th too so gotta be prepared. Its really cold here at the min, -5 last night! Had snow, freezing fog, rain you name it this week. Was hoping to be there by summer 09 before my eldest started High School, but that's looking unlikely. Would love to be there before Christmas 09, but we'll just have to see. We were originally told that we'd have a CO in 5/6 months, which we gauged at March time. Have now been told it could take until June just to get a CO - was a bit gutted to say the least, but hey ho nothing I can do about it. As long as I get there eventually I don't mind. Might give me a little bit longer to save! This sounds like a really stupid question, but how do you celebrate christmas there? Don't suppose you do the full turkey trimmings bit, too warm for that. Glad to see someone is organised for Xmas! Most here in Adelaide still do the full roast,it's traditional and that seems to be it. Some do have a day/bbq on the beach. It's full roast here for us with some very close friends. Good luck on the CO

You know, I don't really know what 'most' do for Xmas lunch up here. I've seen families gather on the beaches really early and hog the bbq spots in preparation - but that's not cooking the turkey. Perhaps they're turkey sausages! Anyway, my experience is of a cold buffet type lunch if it's not the bbq speciality. As for the big day itself, my last one went something like this: Wakey, wakey. Pile presents and sports gear into car. Arrive at 'hosts' - in this case 'the rellies' Say hi and check out beach - next door! Go swim, snorkel, surf - your choice. Head back for eats and a dunk in the pool - yes, a pool so close to the sea - I know, I know... Open pressies not already opened. Have a beer. Go back in to sea. Return to pool. Drink some more. Start singing and playing the bass guitar (I've never played before...) I try the Saxophone... People laugh and some even applaud. Getting quite good at it now. Drink more beer. Merry Xmas. Party! On with the music... Crash out in unbearable temps. Place has no aircon where it's needed. Can't sleep, too hot. Must sleep... No good. Fans working all night, just recirculating hot air. Can't sleep. Sand in my hair still. Boxing day arrives. Wakey wakey (already awake) Repeat day one... (miss out pressie bit) Go home. New year's eve. See pics taken by the sober bastards. OMG. I didn't, did I? That wasn't me, it was my alter ego! |

Thanks! Compliment, or what? Well, after the various Xmas/summer episodes where it's been just a little over the bearable and winters where a pull-over wont suffice we've finally had the air-con installed. I said I'd never do it but Mrs Pom's a real softy and with the lilly-white skinned rellies landing soon... And that's the last of the complaints from me. Seeing as it's fitted now I wonder why I ever put up a stuggle in the first place. In all we managed to save $100 on the purchase price (after haggling) from the first time I we went to look at the various options (a year ago) to purchasing just a few days ago. A $100 price drop in a year! A lesson learned? Perhaps. Let's see what the running costs are first. It's a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries 8kw/9kw big jobbie so I expect to be freezing in the summer and boiling in the winter (or close to that). |

Yep, it's an inverter and you're right about the noise. Very quiet. Saturday was a horrid hot and humid day so it served its purpose well. Yesterday we went Xmas shopping on the coast where it was 33 with roasting winds. Difficult to breathe, in a way. Summer, is definitely here - not sure about Christmas though. It still feels odd. |
