Some people say cars are overpriced in Australia. Look at it this way - cars don't lose their value so quickly in Australia.

So invest in fugly metal!

I actually used to prepare those for delivery when new!!

I worked after school (and sometimes in) cleaning and polishing vehicles for a British Leyland dealership.

The Allagro was and ugly SOB - the Princess with the wedge shard bum was an uglu dog as well.

Got to play with a few MG's though.

I was picked up from home to attend the local college in a Mini Clubman in my younger days before learning to drive. That was until Pete rolled it one day and then he was forced to borrow his gran's Allegro. I can't remember if it had the quartic steering wheel, but I do remember it had the most bouncy plastic seats in a deep maroon colour and we'd have to hang on around bends if he ever drove it as enthusiastically as he did the Mini. He hit a kerb in the Mini and it toppled over onto its roof!

MGs. Now they're a different act entirely. Well, until the plastic bumpers that the Americans insisted we needed to protect our bonces. Chrome bumper MGBs and MGAs are the prettiest of cars. One day...

So, you like blue then... :happythumbs:

I'll post Doug when I can find a nice picture of him in the sun. Got to fix his accelerator pedal today. She's already broken him only on her second drive!

Well my first Beetle "Betty" was orange, Basil was green - but believe me I'd be quite happy with one in any colour at the minute!!

Check out this website:

Dubs Down Under :happythumbs:

It's my hobby site and as you can tell I've only just started it. I've spent countless years working on these things and writing about them, for fun and money. So one day I thought: "Why not add to the information on the web with a site of my own and invite everyone to join in who's got one or owns one in Australia?" Of course I haven't publicised the site yet (well, just one link somewhere), hence no feedback, but it's only been live a week or so and I just finished adding the pics of Douglas to it.

I'm in the middle of rebuilding the front suspension on a '62 Porsche 356B and it's amazing how closely the king and link pin system looks to Douglas. The drum brakes may be larger and more powerful on the Porsche but the pins themselves are a direct replacement. No doubt that info will be explored further on the site.

Kim, send me pics of Betty through the site and a few words. Yes, I know it's not here but you'll be soon and that's close enough!

Hi Paul

Love the website - have now added it to my favourites. :happy2:

I am seriously jealous - Douglas is lovely!! :happythumbs: (anybody reading this will think I'm nuts - but I'm sure you'll understand me).

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of Betty - she was George's originally who then passed her on to me when I passed my test, stupidly I never took any pictures!!! ^o) I do have some pictures (which I'll dig out) of Basil at some VW meets - unfortunately not on a digital camera - can I scan them in and add them to a thread or email them?

So who did you write for then? I have a shed full of VW magazines - maybe I have an article somewhere???

Nice looking site.

Blimey - looks as if you 2 do have the "Bug" ( pardon rubbish pun)

I'd be a proud owner of a Karmann Ghia (sp?) But could not keep it at home.

It's just that we live up a bumpy and dusty track - anything "normal" or low slung has "fun"
I had the keys to a brand new Holden SV6 in black yesterday (while my Toyota 4wd was serviced).
Oooo I had to be soooo careful on that track!

You would be amazed at how well the old VWs handle bumpy terrain. They were built for it on a chassis that can handle almost anything thrown at it. The suspension is solid and dependable. Their traction in muddy fields has to be seen to be believed. I always wanted a 'low-light' Karmann Ghia but I have so much on my plate at the mo that I don't think that'll ever happen. There are 4 classics under the house, and one Subaru Outback. Old VWs were just slow cars with smelly heaters and a little hairy going around corners if you didn't know how to drive them. Those that did had hairy chests! To think that between the 1950s and the 1970s little '1200' model Beetles were getting 40mpg plus. They were slow and noisy but would cruise flat out at 60 - 65mph on the flat. What more did you need?

I had a 1965 Splitscreen camper that would always do 30mpg. It had a 1600cc motor in it and topped out around 70 - 75mph. I souped it up to a 1700cc type 4 engine with a sporty cam 'E' grind cam, free flowing exhaust and twin carbs and still it would give 30mpg. Top speed rose to 100mph! No kidding! It still had the drum brakes! Scary.

My VW Variant, that originally came with a 1600 50 hp engine ended up with a 2.1 litre 130 hp motor and a gearbox to match the power with taller gearing. That did an amazing 115mph! I'll dig up some info on that and put it on the DDU website. I could get to 60 mph in second gear and 90 mph is third! This in a vehicle built in 1972. I don't think Douglas will ever do that.

So go get that Karmann Ghia :happythumbs:

Hey, scan and send and scribble something to go with the pics. Why not? I think I can bend the rules for you.

I wrote for VW Motoring, Total VW (and 'Flat 4' which became Total VW), VW Camper and Commercial and The Vintage Volkswagen.

I must admit that I had an aversion to Bugs for years.
I did learn to drive in one.
It was maroon (yuk),falling in bits and had the crankiest gearbox in the world.

I do like the really old classic ones with more detail though.

Can't afford a Ghia yet - blown the budget on the hole in the ocean (whoops - boat)

I did have a love affair with Hillman Imps at one time.
I've worked on quite a few in my late teens.
Great to work on as all you do is loosen the engine, chock it up and push the car away.
My mate and I had one we "worked"
Twin stromberg carbs, bored out to 998,hi lift cam and other fancy stuff.
We stripped it bare - no heating - no nothing - just two seats, rollcage and lots of fun!
Apart from when the engine literally blew up!!

Russ - believe me if I had the money I'd love a Karmann Ghia, but my first "love" is Beetles.

We do the "if I won the lottery talk" - and my list of wants would be one of every VW model made!!! Not much to ask for I don't think?

I'll have to dig out my VW Motoring mags - got plenty of them in the shed!

Its Grace's 4th birthday tomorrow - so won't get to chance to sort through my photos - but will do it soon and send you some pics of Basil. :happythumbs:

My father raced Minis in the '60s and always reckoned the competing Imps were a brilliant car on the rally-cross circuits. Engine in the 'right' place for traction and weren't they a very high-revving motor?

My grandfather owned one so I must have been driven around in it but I can't remember much about that. I was probably 4 years old at the time.

Well Tyke and Mrs Tyke have their dream boat...

After all these years I've bought my dream car. As Gill pointed out it wouldn't be right to have bought one that didn't need repairing...

It's a '62 Porsche 356 and who knows what's wrong with it, but I don't care. I hope the engine's repairable - rebuilds cost up to $15k if you hand it over. Needless to say I'll save myself a bit here by re-building it myself or opting for a cheaper VW replacement as a get me around.

It hasn't got much of an interior, is missing all the side glass, the rubbers (doors, windows, lids) need replacing, carpets and roof-lining too, it's part way through a lhd to rhd conversion, brakes are stuffed, no bumpers, no wiring loom, etc, etc. But the paint and bodywork are great!

The old '57 VW bus has been put on the back burner for a while.

Cheers guys. It's been described as 'sub zero' already by mates, but you can't really tell what it'll look like from the pics. Here's one already finished that shouldn't be too far away from the final look in a year or two.
