Hi Sarah. Please do make time to post. We're having a spot of bother recruiting members - perhaps it's our sense of humour or just the fact that we don't argue all the time? My name's Paul, I emigrated to Australia almost 4 years ago (time flies!) and I live with my wife Gill on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland. We moved here because we had family in the region. Nice to hear from you. Where are you moving from? BTW, this forum's a 'cheapy' (i.e. free) and for some reason you won't get a notification that someone has posted. If you do get one, let me know how you managed it. Cheers, Paul. |

Thanks everyone for the welcome! We chose Perth as we have visited the area and have friends there so that will be our starting point but who knows where in Oz we will eventually end up! There is my husband Trev who is an instrument tech and electrician, me (was a nursery nurse now a stay at home mum) and our little girl Isabelle who is 2 1/2 years old. We are in Southampton Uk at the moment and looking forward to a change. We've told our families but Trev's mum is not happy about the move and keeps ringing up with reasons why we shouldn't go. i.e rise in living costs, New Zealand is nicer (her views) etc. As anyone else experienced this? Help to deal with it would be grateful! Take care Sarah x |

Hi Sarah. To be honest the choice is yours and for your immediate family only - nothing to do with other people's wants/opinions. Has Trev's Mum lived in NZ??? If not I'd certainly take her opinion with a pinch of salt. At some stage during the move at least one family member will become hostile and try to put you off going - perhaps MIL just wants to divide and conquer??? I've not been to NZ (yet) but it does seem different to Oz in a lot of respects. The cost of living may seem cheaper but the economy is not as strong as AUS - taxes are higher as well - GST is 12.5% on everything instead of 10% on most things here. If you are coming out just based on financial decisions it's a waste of time - living here in AUS is the whole package - lifestyle /chance of new beginning/ because you can! If you have the "Itch" to move here it may be better to satisfy it rather than say "What if?" 20 years down the track. No easy way to handle it apart from some very strong tape to shut someone up I'm afraid. But most of us have been through it. |

I have been to New Zealand and I can confirm that it's a lovely place to send all mother-in-laws... I haven't been to Perth though, so can't comment on a great choice! The feedback is that it's clean, fresh and modern and closer to Singapore than to any other Australian capital city. Great for just popping over to buy exotic Christmas presents, apparently. When we came out no one suggested we shouldn't make the move. All were supportive and some just simply jealous! We've had a few visit since (including my 93 year old grandfather! ) and 2009 looks like it will be another busy year for friends and family who are coming out on holiday. It's a great feeling to take them out and show them the sites.Paul. |

Thanks, we are determinded to go ahead with it as we want a change and believe that Australia can deliver what we need which is a decent future for Izzy. We loved it when we visited earlier this year! For some reason MIL has a real thing against Oz and wanted us to consider NZ as she would prefer to visit us there - of all the cheek! (She's never been) She just makes us want to screaaammmmmm! By the way love this forum as it seems a bit more fun than other forums I've visited, you're all mad! hee hee!! Sarah

Hi Sarah Oh I know that feeling - my MIL is less than impressed with us at the moment. OH has recently told her of our plans - good god you should have seen her face (then again maybe not! ). My parents are really chuffed - they've long since emigrated to Cyprus - they can't wait for us to get there so they can visit. Have had some negative feedback of people who I thought were friends - have just put this down to jealousy, they all say "I wish it was something I could do, but ..." Well if they really wanted to do it they could. Any way our minds are made up, definitely the best thing we could do for our girls. And yes - we are all slightly mad here, but its much more fun that way Kim x |
