Hello,

Pete - well spotted - even changing my name I can't escape (only kidding) - yep I'm on PIA too. Luckily beautiful day here today - even better because the kids are at school/nursery and I'm at home on my own (well not if you include the dog/cat/hamster!).

Tyke - used to live in Leeds during my many travels - just outside in a place called Garforth - frequented many a good yorkshire pub in my time! ;)

Hello the Mortons - I wish we could get there this year, but think its more likely to be this time next year. My daughter is due to start High School in September 09 - so as long as I'm gone before then I'm a happy bunny. Do you have any idea of where abouts you're thinking of settling in Adelaide. I have a friend who went over last week (she's actually Oz by birth) and she's in Reynella. :D

Lovely to hear from you all.

Moved over from north Wales and found our little spot of paradise. Now on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland. Despite being able to see the sea (we're 400m above sea-level) it's still a good 40 minute drive as the roads tend to meander down to the coast. Nice drive though. It's very 'rural' here.

Hi Judi

Quite fancy Hallett Cove myself - I know people seem to moan its a "little Britain" - how do you find it? (that doesn't put me off in the slightest) How long have you been there now?

Hi Jo

You're not that far away from me then - we live on the Cheshire edge of Stoke so only 40 minutes on a good run into Manchester.

We're hoping to head to Adelaide (think I've got everything crossed - might even start praying   ).

Where are you up to with the whole process?

There were plenty of boozers in Pudsey/Stanningley/Farsley to do that :D

Must admit we slacked off most as it was getting a little "Wild West" in some places.

Our regular was the Fox and Grapes at the back of Pudsey - had some great times there.
Wish it was down the road here. It's one of the few things I miss really.Great to have a boozer for meet ups.

Hi Kim! :D
No we're not far at all - where abouts are you? We travelled that way a few years ago as our wedding photographer lived in Congleton (well I think that's where it was...) Anyway - this is where we are so far...
Well to cut the long story short and to stop you from falling asleep - we orginally applied beginning of last year that application is on hold because of the capital investment fiasco so we've decided to apply again - fed up of waiting for an outcome. So last week our 2nd app was sent to oz electronically. We've had our police checks and medicals so really need the visa to come through by end of next Jan.
Where are you up to?

Hi Jo

We're not far from Congleton - only 10 mins away.

OH has just submitted the first stage of his vetasses to get his skills etc checked over, hopefully should hear back within the next couple of weeks (got everything crossed!). If that goes ok then he has to do a practical and then if that goes ok its finally applying for the visa - blimey don't make it easy  So we're right at the beginning of the process - just wish we'd started this years ago.

My eldest is due to start high school in September 09 so I would prefer to be gone by then at the latest.

Hi Kim

Firstly I must explain why I am here at silly o'clock posting on the internet...I have been feeling ill all night and cannot sleep...am sick of tossing and turning...so figured half on hour on t'internet might help

So anyway...we are currently living in sunny Halifax and we are not 100% completely decided on where to go yet.....we thought of Melbourne initially...

however my birth mothers husband who lives in the Sydney suburbs (near Penrith) says that either Newcastle or Wollongong in NSW would be ideally suited to hubby's trade...of the two I think I'd prefer Newcastle...so for now we think that's what we will aim for

Hi,

Ooh hope you're feeling much better today :D

What trade does your OH have - mine's a chippie (carpenter) so we're going under a skilled independent visa. Just waiting on the first part of his vetasses - crikey am on pins already, I'll be a wreck by the time we actually apply for a visa!!

Am feeling mildly better.....terrible stomach bug  and now DH has got it too!!!!

Martin is a welder/fabricator...which seems to be called "boilermaker" in Aus and which is listed as a skill in demand and gives us 140 points all in.

I also have my birth mother living in Aus and she would sponsor us, but I don't think we need to go down that route (I was adopted so not sure if "technically" she could be classed as a parent)... also as this is a whole new thing to us I wasn't sure if it meant we would have to live in (close) proximity to her.....we want to be free to choose where ever we go.

BTW What are vetasses...I told you.....much terminology for us to learn lol

We enquired about courses where he could take the exams he never took 18 odd years ago and have found a course in Wakefield. Costs about £365 but will be worth it.....'cos even though in practice he is fully qualified he doesn't have the piece of paper that confirms it!

Glad you're getting better - hope the OH recovers quicky and that the girls don't get it!

Vetasses is where we're getting OH's trade qualifications/experience etc verified. I know there's TRA - to be honest I'm not entirely sure what the difference is (I'm sure someone on here will know) not sure if it has something to do with which visa you're applying under. Like I said before, if he gets the ok for this then he has to sit a practical exam!

OH has all his paperwork/qualifications but even thought about doing a course himself to make sure he was up-to-date!

Apparently the visa application is the easy bit after vetasses (I hope) - took me weeks to get everything together for it - had to get references from his current and previous employers (stating what jobs he did in detail, what tools he used and what he used them for!) photographs of him at work etc, blimey don't make it easy for you do they, nearly sent me doolally trying to sort it out

Fingers/toes and everything crossed for us hey that all goes to plan.

Hi Kim!
We too wish we'd have applied sooner - especially after our reccie last summer and I suppose with the uk housing market slowing down and the oz houses getting more expensive but hey ho I guess everything happens for a reason! I'm sure when it happens we'll be so excited that the past years of waiting will be worth it...or is that when the real rollercoaster ride begins????

Hi Jo

I know the housing market worries me a lot - just hoping it might start to pick up (wishful thinking!). :-/

Well we've passed the first part of the vetasses yesterday - flipping 'eck was so relieved - OH got to do his practical now!!! :'( Feel like I'm on that roller coaster now - gawd knows what I'll be like by the time we get to go.

We haven't been able to do a reccie - work commitments/kids/cost etc just haven't allowed it so we're going "blind" so to speak. I do have a friend who has recently gone home to Adelaide so once she's settled back in she'll pass on loads of information too.

Hey! We've accepted an offer on our house... Yippee!!! Fingers crossed it all goes through smoothly!
