Hi all, I'm moving to Oz in Jan 09 and I'm wondering if I can bring my car over with me and re-register it in Oz. We are coming over with a relocation grant and we are to have a container filled with our belongings. The car may fit in the container with our stuff so would an extra charge be put on top?? Thanx. Hiya Skyblue, you need to do your research into the costs of bringing your car into the country. It might be more cost effective to sell your car, and buy over here, save on costs, and the heartach of ALL the paper work............................... Airconkid

A few things spring to mind. Firstly, I'm not sure every removals co. can/will fit a vehicle in with your possessions. There are vehicle shippers who specialise in that sort of thing. Is there anything special about the type of vehicle you're hoping to bring in? Is it a classic car, for example? Has it been modified? You see, on paper you're not allowed to import certain types of vehicles into Australia. I had a true '60s beach buggy in the UK - blue metal flake, short wheel base, big alloyed fun machine. In my research I discovered that I wouldn't be allowed to import it as it was originally a VW Beetle. In fact any vehicle modified from standard, no matter to what extent, would not be permitted entry. I went to the bother of tracking down the original manufacturers of the vehicle - now residing in Victoria, Australia, who backed up the facts. And classic cars can have the same problem, especially if they're modified, say to improve matters with the old braking system. However, since living here I've learned that it pays to join a classic car club. They can ascertain the status of your vehicle and assist with its importation - cut through a lot of the red tape and give general guidance. You'll probably have to join the club first though. Nothing, it seems, is beyond the scope of the true car enthusiast. As regards bringing in something standard, consider all the costs. Shipping, importation fees, registration costs, etc. These all mount up and www.carsales.com.au will give you a good idea what things sell for over here. P. |
