I seem to recall once coming across some official figures on wages in Australia. Anyone know where I could find something like this so we know what to negotiate for?

Cheers

The bureau of statistics has tons of stuff on it that may help. But I can say here on the Sunshine Coast the average wage is $35,000 across the board.

Full-time earnings in Australia averaged A$53,860 per annum in early 2006. (According to the Bureau of Statistics.)

If overtime and bonuses are included, earnings were $56,350 per annum.

The average full-time male wage (excluding overtime) in Australia is $57,130 per annum

The average full-time female wage in Australia (excluding overtime) is $48,115 per annum.

Workers in the Capital Territory (Canberra) are Australia's highest paid workers while Tasmania has the lowest average wage.
Average Full Time Ordinary Time Earnings March 2006
State Average Annual Wage
Tasmania $48,240
Queensland $50,270
South Australia $50,705
Victoria $53,175
Northern Territory $53,535
Western Australia $55,025
New South Wales $56,320
Capital Territory $62,060

Australia's best-paid workers are miners, whose ordinary earnings average A$85,550 a year.
Average Full Time Ordinary Time Earnings
February 2006 By Industry
State Average Annual Wage
Accommodation, Cafes and Restaurants $38,075
Retail Trade $41,285
Manufacturing $50,310
Construction $50,425
Wholesale Trade $51,330
Health and Community Services $52,210
Personal and Other Services $53,645
Cultural and Recreational Services $62,060
Transport and Storage $53,735
Government Administration and Defence $57,440
Communication Services $57,790
Property and Business Services $58,455
Education $59,890
Electricity, Gas and Water Supply $64,300
Finance and Insurance $67,835
Mining $85,550

The high prices fetched by Australia's commodity exports in recent years are expected to continue into the foreseeable future - hence the high average wages in the mining sector. Australian wages are expected to continue risng faster than in most other western economies.

I think it's tougher for the self-employed. Aircon's wages are exceptional and I admire his openess and honesty.

I've heard of a few small businesses that have gone under recently or are getting close to the mark. But enough doom and gloom. The sun's shining! Oh, sorry, no it isn't. Queensland has had 8 month's worth of 'average' rain since the beginning of the year. Why is it I always end up talking about the weather. Must be something about being British... :D
