I'll let you organise this time then. Try to avoid a clash with 300 Hell's Angels will you...

Gill and I are always up for it. Dates can no do are Sunday 17th February and possibly the 16th too. Might be busy preparing for a nearby VW show. Of course, you're always welcome to come. Bugs, Buggies and Customised Campervans at the Ettamoga Pub, Sunshine Coast on the 17th. A Brisbane VW club has a cruise from Brisbane to it early Sunday. Apparently 200 classic shiny VDubs travelling en mass looks quite impressive in the morning sun! I should say.

Also sometime in March a few days either side of the 13th is a no no.

oh paul that sounds great, wish we could go. the first VW show of the year nearest to us in Malvern 3 counties show ground and i bet it pisses down all weekend; it did last year. mind you it was funny, as loads and loads of campers, like us had to towed out of the mud
we were covered in the stuff.
we have sold our pink VW 1972 beetle and just have the camper to go now, I will be sad to let that go, I can tell you :(
chris has recently bought a VW golf gti mark 2, which is fun to drive and my god does it go, I need one of these :ph43r: to keep everything in tact :D
well have a good time and post some piccy's for us to have a gander at.

Hey, another VDub convert!

Under the house we've got a 65 Bug, 66 Fastback and a 57 Splitscreen Bus, all in various states of disrepair. The Bug belongs to the mrs and is slowly coming together - i.e. when I'm finding the time to rebuild it. The other two need so much work!

Are you going to DubFreeze? That's on the 17th of Feb, same time as the Sunshine Coast event. One will be freezing and the other scorching! I'll try and post some pics of last year's SC event.

Can recommend a good site for selling/buying stuff when the camper has to go - it's free to advertise! Try aircooled.org.uk

Anyway, sorry Dave for hijacking the thread. Perhaps I should start a VWs only one?

Tell me about it. I think I am getting a buzz for letters after my name by the looks of things. haha -not that I write them after my name but it would be a laugh if someone was posting me something.

I am absolutely loving my new job. I started this week. Its sooo chilled. I havent told them what I used to do or the level I was at which is funny. They dont half talk down to me. Its really funny.

I had to do a compliance test and I thought hmmm will to the Anti Money Laundering first, thats always been my strongest subject. For my manager to lean across take the mouse and say ' you could do with leaving that to the end, its really hard and you havent been here long enough yet!!' I reclicked it when she had gone and when she came back and it read competent you should have seen the look on her face. She hasnt seen my resume you see.

Another guy was talking to me and said 'when you get to my level you want to see the exams I have to do' I laughed because I am more qualified and was two levels higher than him in the UK. haha it really is funny how patronising people can be.

I would love to meet up with everyone - hopefully something can get sorted in the not too distant future.
A lot of my weekends are taken up with camping and VW shows (yes I'm a bit of a VW loony too) - just got rid of my 1972 Beetle "Basil" (weep :( )- hope to get another when I hit the oz sunshine.

Kim, I'm trying my best to convert everyone to aircooled classics. There are heaps over here to chose from.

We were less than happy when we had to sell up our collection - 2 Bugs, 1 Ghia, 1 Buggy and a Squareback.

The downside of living here is the lack of VW events. You partially make up for it by joining the local classic car club - they're not snotty about VWs like in the UK - so some weekends can turn into classic car tours. Our '65 Bug is nearly ready to hit the road, then I can start on the '57 Splitscreen Camper. Wahoooo!

They're not just classics, but a way of life! I had to be out of the house when Basil left as I would have been hanging onto the rear bumper as he went down the street  (I know its very sad to those of you who don't have VW's but I was very attached to Basil - I'd had him for 10 years). I've seen a few on ebay in Oz that could really take my fancy!! So you never know.

We're all converts in this house - my girls love them (they don't really have any choice - only kidding ;) ).

You'll have to post some piccies of the camper, would love to see it.

The bus shouldn't have front indicators - these have been added at some stage. It just has semaphores and a single brake light.

That pic above was taken about a year ago. things have progressed with the van a bit in terms of metal removal, so it doesn't look that good, and I've been collecting stuff for it - handles, headlamps, etc. The '65 Bug looks better now. I've rebuilt the engine, front and rear suspension, brakes, etc. etc and repaired the rot with fresh metal.

My latest one is here. It's a 66 fastback. Wahooooooooooooo!

Thanks for the fantastic pictures - wow you've been a busy bunny! :D

Can't wait to get my hands on a new bug, really miss having one.

We're off down to Cornwall for the May Bank holiday - think I might just spot one or two whilst we're there!! You'll probably find me staring dreamily down the seafront at someones VW and muttering "I want that one!"

Again thanks for the piccies.

We could have an all night party and invite people off the street to make the numbers up!!!!!!!!!

Well, the thought is there mate. I'm doing a lot of working away from home in Toowoomba for the next 4-5 months, so the time I do get home is pretty precious as you can imagine......

I did that once. Years ago I hosted an online forum gathering after work. As editor of a car magazine I thought it was a great opportunity to talk about the magazine, where we were going and just to have fun and meet readers online in a live chat. It started off that way. Of course there were too many questions at once and I found it hard to answer everyone's questions. I gave one hour of my time and hoped it would be a regular monthly feature.

One person decided to hide behind his or her forum mask and probe deeper and deeper into the magazine's foundations and try to tear the magazine to shreds. It was awful. I'll admit to feeling a little hot under the collar that night after work. To this day no one has owned up to who it was that was hell-bent on destroying this new magazine - but we all had our own ideas who "The Shadow" really was who signed up that night especially to bring the house down.

They failed, of course. Others wondered what the hell was going on and quickly told the menace to bag it!

So virtual gatherings give me the shakes. All it would take is for a 'new member' to suddenly appear and...

Yes, perhaps I'm being a little over-reactive, but you should have been in my shoes at the time. I guess what you're suggesting bears little resemblance to my nightmare. I'll have two virtual sugars, or none at a real meet-up.

Rudi, you need to pop over to Koala Konnection and register appearing on the Relocation Services page.

Cheers,

Paul.

PS Here's one you'll find interesting and it's one of the reasons 'bad forums' or 'bad postings' are something I try and stay well clear off. On that same forum all those years ago a posting came up from the assistant editor, Jon Smith. Some of you reading this will know Jon, even though you've never met him. He worked with me on the magazine and later on moved over to a Max Power type of magazine before landing the job on Channel Five's '5th Gear' motoring programme. Yes, him, with the spikey hair! Jon, if you're reading this drop me a line, buddy. I've tried contacting you through 5th Gear but I think they think I'm a stalker! I've got a nice 356 you might be interested in...

Anyway, back to the forum plot. Jon was abusing people on the forum in a way most unlike Jon. It was so out of character that we thought this can't be Jon. The forum name was something like 'Jon Smith' but clearly different (probably hyphenated, I can't remember) and gave the immediate impression that this was him. So we checked the IP address and confirmed it to be someone else whose IP address also appeared on other forums at the same time. A UK IP address. What stupidity! The fact that Jon was on holiday with his fiancee at the time in Greece made it even more incredibly obvious, but they didn't know that. And who was the imposter? Well, let's just say that I had a chat with the editor of the competing magazine and explained our findings. He assured me he would call a meeting and put an end to this immediately. Yes, I got an apology, but no one else on the forum did. What a missed opportunity, eh? We let it go, but it upset a lot of people in our office that someone from a company so big in the publishing game should stoop so low as to cause outrage on a forum. We were the small guys. The new guys on the block. We must have had some impact!

Perhaps the same person as 'The Shadow'. Who knows?
